So, what kinds of games would you recommend for a newbie to the Star Fox series and which (if any) would you advise to stay away from? Why do you think it's worth playing/avoiding?

Well, you can't go wrong with the original for the SNES...I think you can get it via Virtual Console.

However, if you can't find it there, I DEFINITELY recommend Star Fox 64, you can get that via V.C. for sure (I have my copy for the Nintendo 3DS)

Star Fox Assault is also awesome!

Play those first, and then if you're a fan of Zelda, then you should try Star Fox adventures (be warned though, it's not as great as the others).

AVOID Star Fox Command. Awful play control, lousy and confusing multi ending plot line, and just dreadful animation.

oh laudy, it's been a while since I posted here. Personally I think there's some good things about each game

Starfox 64 is definitely the quintessential Starfox game, though I'd rather buy the original on the Wii Virtual Console, as I feel that 3D is too similar to warrant a $40 purchase imo

Adventures is kind of difficult to recommend, but I think it's worth playing but mostly if you don't mind playing a completely different game, and if you like Zelda style gameplay,

Assault is probably the best game after 64, though the ground segments are a bit of a turn-off, but still decent

Command is also hard to recommend, personally I enjoyed the gameplay, but it takes a while to get used to. Story's crap though

I agree with you there, Megas75, though I didn't really like any of SF Command, not even the game-play (no offense). Oh, and Happy Birthday!

To be honest, there are not "too many" titles to the StarFox series, like several other series out there. I do suggest playing them all (when you can), that way, having knowledge of what's going on in any forum would be a big boost

It depends on what you prefer really. If you're a fan of flying and dog-fighting battles. I'd definitely recommend starting with StarFox for the SNES or StarFox 64 or even StarFox 2 on PC/Emulator. However if you're more of an on foot person or maybe a mixture of the two I'd recommend Starfox Adventures first followed by Assault. Adventures was what got me into the fandom and even though it has it's holes and it's flaws it's still a good game in my eyes.

However if you're completely new and have no idea of the StarFox history I'd recommend playing them all in chronological order.

Even if LT isn't, the topic can pretty much go for anyone new to the StarFox fandom
