The Brotzian System of Starship Classification was established c. 11 ABY as a way of categorizing starships by function, and then by size and scale. It was considered more comprehensive than the Anaxes War College System, but was somewhat convoluted as a result, with many starships falling in multiple categories. Below are specific classes, with examples for each; note that many examples were added to the system after its debut. Freighters Bulk Freighters - Large freighters, these ships often served with large organizations to transport enormous amounts of cargo. Q-ships - These were freighters armed with concealed weaponry, designed to lure in raiders. Tramp Freighters - Often light freighters, these ships belonged to independent captains with no established scheduled ports of call. Warships Carriers - These are warships whose primary function is to carry starfighters. Fleet Carriers - These carriers are designed to operate with the main fleet of a nation's navy. Supercarriers - These fleet carriers are the largest in existence, capable of carrying a minimum of 120 starfighters. Light Carriers - These are fleet carriers that carry less than 120 starfighters, prizing speed over capacity. Unlike escort carriers, they travel with the main fleet. Escort Carriers - Slow, lightly armored and lightly armed, these carriers defended supply convoys with their complements. Corvette-Carrier - Also known as 'pocket carriers', these ships generally only carry a squadron of starfighters, and are generally regulated to patrol duties in low-priority systems.
Frigates Anti-starfighter Frigates - These frigates were designed to support larger warships, sporting many laser cannons and advanced targeting systems for shooting down fast-moving starfighters. Cargo Frigate[/sized] - Slow, lightly armored and armed, these ships were little more than armed cargo freighters, often in military service. Compare with bulk cruisers. Escort Frigates - Similar to cargo frigates, these frigates were designed to escort convoys. Often they were equipped with sophisticated communications equipment to serve as squadron flagships in low-priority sectors. These ships carried too few starfighters to be classified as 'escort carriers.'
Starfighters Gunboats - These were very large, powerful hyperdrive-capable starfighters. Inspirations: Edited by Brotz, Apr 15 2012, 08:35:42 PM.
