Mmm, Jared Leto.

Hi everyone!

This was a member idea submission that has been redrafted. Versh originally submitted the idea and I rewrote it up. He has kindly cleared and approved my submission.

If this is popular with members, it will get a place in roleplay planning. I am hoping to draft up one for Menage, which involves a shake-down of a Federation property on Nar Shaddaa.

Opinions, revamps and suggestions please :)

GALACTIC HOTSPOTS

What is a hotspot?
A ‘hotspot’ is a player-designed and player-driven plot event designed to bring multiple factions together. The hotspot has three main factors of its design:

  • A predetermined location and time.
  • Objectives and victory conditions.
  • PvP (Player versus Player) interactions.

This means that a hotspot is generally a coordinated and planned event. The time (including duration) and place is dictated by the author of the hotspot, and allows participants to definitively say they were in that place and that time. This permits ease of integration into character timelines. Additionally, hotspots are a PvP event – this means that multiple factions are involved in a competitive event and are aligned to out-compete other participants. Victory is determined by the fulfillment or objectives by one side, or by the successful inhibition of those objectives by the opposing side. The number and extent of completed objectives by the completion of the hotspot will determine the extent of the reward each side will achieve, as well as altering the outcome for the galaxy and the site plot.

Hotspots therefore will allow players to not only slake their thirst for competitive writing, but also to create contained events to drive the goals forward for their factions. If a faction has a definitive goal, but knows that it would be contested, designing a hotspot is a vehicle to access them.

A hotspot differs from a thread designed in roleplay planning or a coordinated event in that the stakes are higher, the players are more numerous and the rewards are more valuable in nature and quantity. The kudos as well, in terms of completing a hotspot event, far exceed those from solo threads or missions in terms of rise in character skills and resources. In this way, hotspots may be used to further and improve character standing and prowess, and to allow collaborative writing in a competitive and creative environment.

What kinds of hotspots are there?
There are two types of hotspots:

1. Cross-Faction Hotspots
Cross-faction hotspots are hotspots that occur with at least two factions. The hotspotspits these factions against each other, with their objectives designed to promote conflict and competition between them. In their simplest incarnation, these hotspots have two factions involved who are directly contending the other’s victory conditions. They might, in some cases, involve more than two factions.

2. Site-Wide Hotspots
Site-wide hotspots are exactly as the name suggests. These hotspots are designed with the anticipation that members from all factions will contribute to the course and the outcome of the event. The outcomes of these events will have a large role in altering the plot of the site, and will change the future direction and environment of SWL.

Both these hotspots will use the outline which is indicated below. However, cross-faction hotspots will be more mostly member-moderated with a staff stamp, while site-wide hotspots must have whole staff approval as well as be largely supported by the site’s member base.

Important Information
When will a hotspot occur?
Hotspots will occur when a member chooses to coordinate the event. A writeup of the hotspot must be drafted and presented in the subforum in ‘Roleplay Planning’. As the writeup must be deemed fair, creative and relevant to the entire site, members are invited to submit comments independent of those from staff.

If a hotspot is to actually occur, all the designated member places in the hotspot must be filled. There must be three additional participants other than the coordinator (a minimum of four, two per side).

Who is allowed to take part in a hotspot?
Anyone who fits the criteria of the hotspot may take place, as long as they are not participating in another hotspot that will be occurring concurrently. The write-up of the hotspot should provide enough context and background to allow players to realistically join the event. The write-up of the hotspot should not be biased so as to preference the ability of one faction to join rather than another. Volunteers should be able to briefly indicate how a character would be present for the hotspot.

Where can I find a hotspot?
Hotspot write-ups will have their own subform for submission in Roleplay planning. Cross-faction hotspots will merely take place in the relevant forums in ‘The Galaxy’ forum, with the original submission posted as the first post. Site-wide hotspots, if they will involve multiple threads, may have a subforum designated for them in ‘The Galaxy’ forum. The objectives, victory conditions and progress so far will all be posted in an easy-to-find location within the hotspot’s subform.

Why participate in a hotspot?
A hotspot is a enjoyable competitive environment designed to not only allow roleplays to collaborate, but also to test their skill set, writing ability and creativity with their peers and contemporaries. It is not a negative environment. The victorious side of the hotspot will be acknowledged for having finished their objectives and doing their part to affect the site, but the losing side will receive credit and recognition for all their objectives as well. Additionally, certain rewards might be given out by the staff for participation or exemplary actions within the roleplay. What these rewards are and who receives them will vary from hotspot to hotspot, but some might include otherwise restricted Force powers or waivers from certain rules.

Creating a Hotspot
A hotspot has a single coordinator and, while this may be a staff-member, it is most usually a member. The coordinator must centralise their hotspot around an idea or plot event. The topic of this struggle must be set up appropriately, such as designation of the events precipitating its occurrence, including indicating the roles of the factions involved. Every hotspot MUST have an obvious opposition and must be balanced. The original idea may be submitted in rough form for member critique prior to a submission, where other players may contribute suggestions and critiques. This is highly encouraged.

Once members feel they have an adequate framework for their hotspot, they should complete the following submission:

HOTSPOT NAME

Site-Wide/Cross-Faction:
When is the hotspot occurring:
Where is the hotspot located:

Factions Involved:
--
--

Hotspot Background
Indicate the context behind the hotspot. List important background events (linking to threads in the roleplay where/if possible), key players and characters as well as any other information you feel is necessary for the hotspot. Also indicate the roles of each of the factions involved.

Members Involved: TOTAL =
Provide, if necessary, description of the roles that you would like filled and any information necessary to explain who qualifies. Be sure the sides are balanced. Make sure you indicate open/filled placements, and the names of the players who are approved volunteers.

Victory Outcomes:
List objectives by factions. Each faction involved must have clear objectives, even if contesting the objections of their opposition faction. It is advised that each hotspot has multiple objectives, rather than a simple “Successfully rob bank”.

Faction Rewards:
Outline, presuming complete success for one faction, the rewards that are possible for each faction involved in the hotspot. Please list these by faction.

Character Rewards:
If applicable, the coordinator should compile a list of specific character rewards that volunteers may achieve in the hotspot/

Hotspot Justification:
In 500 words or less, please indicate why you feel this hotspot is applicable for the site. Detail how it contributes to the site, how it fits into the current plot and how you think it will affect the future direction of the site. If this is a site-wide plot, this section will be the most heavily weighted.

Resources (Optional)
Please list any off-site links that you feel are relevant for the hotspot. You may also place any graphics here (such as graphics of maps, ships, locations) that are necessary.

This submission will be open to both member assessment as well as staff scrutiny. For cross-faction hotspots, staff may boost/limit rewards where necessary, as well provide a final approval if all positions are filled. For site-wide hotspots, all staff must approve the hotspots. Additionally, staff decisions will be governed by the site support for the hotspot.

This submission should be placed in the hotspot subforum found in ‘Roleplay Planning’.

Well, I'll come out and support this. I liked the idea when Versh had made it at Legends, and was sad to never see it implemented.

I'd like to propose that the first hotspot be the auction of the midnight militia assets, as that can have a variety of facets and faction involvement.

Jedi Training: Simulated Attack

Master Rovnak Torvalan
Assassin Veko Kay'lak
Knight Quinn Vollas
Csika'uro'vansha - Aurov

We can do a sitewide for MM.

Cross-faction for Menage and Fed.

I'm game if you are, Jean.
