Currency Thousands of currencies are used across the galaxy. It is not uncommon for a planetary economy to operate on a number of currencies, including planetary credits, credits of a major power in the sector, or credits of a galactic government. Many major governments produce credit chits, but credit chips or credit sticks were commonly used as well. These debit based systems can be used for electronic sales through interchip exchanges. Metal coins are commonly used for local currency, although galactic governments are known to produce commemorative metal coins, like the Victory Tax Credit or Decicred. The Republic's dataries are perhaps the most widespread form of currency. Because of the Republic's exceptional membership, dataries are accepted on all but the most remote planets. The constant ebb and flow of power between governments and the range of support for them make the value of their currency fluctuate wildly from system to system. The establishment of the New Republic stabilized the galactic economy. Galactic Credit Standard The Galactic Credit Standard, simply called credit, colloquially referrers to as Republic Dataries, and is the main currency in use in the galaxy since the time of the Galactic Republic. One tenth of a credit was called a decicred. Credit Chip Credit chips, also know as credit sticks, are credits in a form of a small, flat chip or card issued by the planetary government which had values ranging from 1 to over a billion with a limit set by the issuing governmental authority. Currency is transferred to and from the chip by drawing upon account information from a central bank. These are issued on most Core and Colony worlds. They are very popular even though some planetary governments outside of the core worlds still rely upon hard currency. Because of the popularity and widespread use, few galactic citizens ever see actual cash as their income is directly deposited into their accounts. Credit chips have security codeouts and credit algorithm memory stripes integrated into their circuitry. Modifying a credit chip is possible though extremely difficult. And though it could be altered to access a different account than it was coded for, this was practically impossible. Because of common security countermeasures, a failed attempt to modify the chip activated self-destruct programming, destroying the chip. Misc. Adumari credcoins are the common currency of the planet Adumar. Coins are pieces of minted metal used as currency. Crystalline vertex is a highly valuable mineral that was mined on the planet Kir. After being mined, the vertex was cut into crystals of various shapes for use as currency. Many worlds used crystalline vertex instead of credits, as it had intrinsic as well as assigned value. Drallish crowns are units of currency on the planet Drall. The driit was a monetary unit on Dellalt. The druggat is one of the many forms of currency used on Tatooine. Gold is a strategic metal valued by pirates. Karsems are the currency of the planet Radnor. A keshel is a unit of currency used in the mining colonies on Tyne's Horky. Mesarc is a form of currency used on the planet Aargau. Novian Rubies were a form of currency used by the Zorbian space pirates. Nova crystals are used as a makeshift currency in the Outer Rim and other places where Galactic Standard Credits are not accepted. The peggat is a Huttese currency made of gold and used commonly in the Outer Rim Territories. |
