Sounds of saws, welding, sparking wires, and engine tests flooded the ears of all those in the hangar of the Jedi outpost. While normally the outpost only had a few Jedi at a time, the Master of the Enclave had decided that it was high time he prepared a mobile force for the Jedi, one that would be able to protect transport vessels and lay covering fire for the Jedi from the air should they be attacked. It was all hypothetical of course, and for the past two weeks that the entire squadron had been pieced together everything had been normal. That was until the master of the enclave and the squadron leader, a rather arrogant Jedi Knight, had put the squadron on the spot and told them to do five separate checks of every system in their fighters.

For most people, such a task wasn't a problem, all of the Jedi given the label of Jedi Ace were so familiar with ships that doing such things to supplied vessels from the federation or that the order procured for the Jedi during missions was rather easy and routine. But this ship, this magnificent updated and upgraded relic of a star fighter given as much advanced technology as its modified hull and chassis could hold was another matter entirely. At first glance it would appear to be a simple N-1 starfighter that used to protect Naboo that had been painted completely black, something many people always assumed about the vessel. But upon closer inspection they would realize it had been enlarged to give room for new systems, stronger weapons and a stealth generator, as well as room for an Ai interface and a co--pilot or passenger seat that didn't come standard.

This beauty, this one unqiue vessel among the boxcutter fighters the Jedi had been given, was the personal ship of one Quinn Vollas. To give the impression that he was a team player, and sometimes he truly was, the Gurlanin Jedi had aided the others in testing the systems of their ships to get things done. Unfortunately, few of the other type-A personality-ridden pilots of the Jedi offered the same courtesy, especially when they saw the work involved with such an intricate vessel as Quinn's ship, which he had ironicallly named the Black Cat. Few realized the irony at first, but once the Jedi Ace informed them that his gurlanin form was very similar to that of a canine, they quickly began to offer a chuckle.

Today, however, Quinn was not laughing at the irony of the name, instead he laughed at the irony that he had helped others without getting any in return, and that his ship was the most advanced regardless of its model's age, now considered obsolete. The advanced ship was one of his own creation, had spent months working on it, and years procuring the funds in order to bring it up to standard and beyond. Now all that work came back to bite him in the ass as he tried to meet the expectations of the Squadron Leader as well as those of the Enclave Master. As he once again completed an engine test on his ship, Quinn leaped down from the vessel and lockedit down tight.

"Test complete," he sighed in a low growl of annoyance. "Three times checked over on my ship, five additional checks of other people's ships, and my vessel brought up to speed with the latest Nav data and Jedi location. Anything else sir, or would you like me to give it a nice spit polish for good measure?"

Quinn offered a slight smirk at the rather arrogant commander's annoyance with him, certainly Quinn was not the most Jedi-like among the order, in fact he often worked outside its codes and rules of conduct in order to get the job done. While this had made him something of a black sheep in certain traditionalist circles, he had proven useful, so much so that the results could not be ignored and he was allowed to keep both his ship and his lightsaber. With a disgruntled nod of disappointment, the Jedi Knight let him leave the hangar to spend some time resting. Meditation? In his commander's dreams. No, the Jedi Ace instead headed for the mess hall for a well earned, three course meal, followed by a fourth, more intimate course if he could find a female that was amenable enugh to the suggestion of having a good time in some secluded corner.

"In my dreams indeed," Quinn laughed as he thought about his many rejections from the many female Jedi he had met through the course of his time with them.

If there was anything about being a Jedi he missed, it was being able to walk into a comfortable setting and find a woman to spend a night, or several, with. So with thoughts of his absent night life flitting away and slipping through his grasp, the Gurlanin made his way through the halls and down to the mess hall to get the next best thing: soup, sandwiches, and steaks. That was one thing the former and semi-current information broker loved about the Jedi, four square meals all of fair quality no matter where you were stationed. Soon enough he had a tray in his hands and a buffet bar waiting for him to indulge in its contents.

"Maybe over lunch... or dinner... or whatever meal this is, someone interesting will stop by for a nice chat."

It had been a long morning that had ran right into the late afternoon. Kiani had awoke earlier than usual to start her routine of training. She had to because she promised to help train a group of Younglings with their lessons on the beginning aspects of Shii-Cho.

Her morning started with her morning meditation in the east garden followed by a workout in the gym to keep her body fit. Then she spent almost two hours doing lightsaber velocities and a quick spar with three training droids. After a quick hot shower she raced to the lesson with the Younglings. The lesson was both fun and enjoyable. The Dantari native girl so loved teaching the little ones, it was a source of pleasure for her. She jumped at every chance to do it when asked; which wasn't very often due to the fact she was more often off on a mission with her master and more lately on her own. None the less she relished teaching the little ones and helping mold this next generation of Jedi.

Shortly after the class she again went to the east garden to meditate more only to be rudely interrupted by her growling stomach. Kiani had been so busy she had forgotten to eat. So now here she was looking over the vast array of food at the buffet. Kiani could remember several occasions when she was younger her clan going several weeks without food because it was lean pickings and hunting. Mostly due to her tribe having to compete with the self proclaimed Dantooinians hunting with their blasters and slug throwers scaring off the animals her clan hunted. Now she was here finding it hard to decide what to eat. At least she wasn't just piling on a mound of food and eating it with her hands like she did not so long ago when she first came to the Temple.
She selects some spiced meat on a wooden stick, then a nice portion of steak, and a side of steamed vegetables with a sweet smelling glaze. As she was perusing the other selections she heard someone say.

"Maybe over lunch... or dinner... or whatever meal this is, someone interesting will stop by for a nice chat."

The statement came for a tall dark haired man who was walking toward the buffet. He was in a pilots jumpsuit, so Kiani figured he was a courier or something until she noted his Force aura. As he drew closer she said. " Late lunch or early dinner... I dunno exactly. I'm always up for a friendly conversation." she smiled.

A seemingly immediate response reached the Jedi Ace as he approached, and from the unlikeliest of people it seemed. Blonde, well built, full blossoming figure, sensual lips and eyes that seemed to capture his attention more than the rest of her body. While her clothing detered any furhter lecherous exploration, the Gurlanin was not adverse to tryingt to explore this woman's depth a bit more than her appearance. But pleasure, passion, and good looking woman aside, he could tell she was a friendly enough person, especially since she had walked up to a random person dressed in a custom flight suit. Not many did that, or at least, not many among the Jedi did that.

With that idea in mind, Quinn assumed she was new to the outpost, or at the very least he was new to it. Hell, he'd traveled to every location the Jedi had and he could hardly remember what planet and location he was at now. Dantooine? Dathomir? Ossus? The last one seemed more familiar, but he could hardly care at the moment. for now, his mind was focused on the beautiful woman beside him who offered up the idea of a friendly conversation.

Just how friendly would she get? Quinn wondered behind the walls of his mind.

With a quick nod and a sly smile, the pilot gathered up a larger than average bowl of chili, a large steak, and an even larger sandwich. Small apetite? Certainly not, even if he was a pilot he worked up the urge for food just as easily if not more quickly than others. Well there was a reason for that, maintaining his current form, a tall man that looked around their late twenties with a semi-trimmed beard and chin length pitch black hair took a certain amount of concentration.of course, such concentration was second nature to him, hell even when he went to sleep he mantained the form almost as if he wasn't a shapeshifter at all.

Then again, once he chose his form he could go days, weeks, months even without reverting to his more bestial traits. It made him wonder really, if inside he locked his mind onto the form and never had to worry about it, as if he was as mutch human, or humanoid, as the next person? it was an interesting thought, but as he gathered up a large bottle of juice and a smaller one of water, Quinn let the woman lead him to a table on the outskirts of the dining hall instead of being right in the middle. Personally he liked a bit of distance, given his past profession, being near the wall with a good view of the windows and doors was a natural and necessary reaction when one entered and planned to stay in one place fof a rolonged period. But as he sat, he continued the infant conversation to nurse it to more fruitful ideas.

"Nice of you to take me in like this, don't get much of that from the other Aces around here," said the shapeshifter before he took a sip of water. "So telll me, what's a beautiful young woman like yourself want to talk about with such an obvious Spacer Jedi like myself hmm?"

She smirked at his comment about being beautiful. Kiani wasn't the type to take the comment about her looks too serious. The fact was she didn't think she was devastatingly attractive compared to all the glamorous models that flashed across the millions of advertising holoboards throughout Coruscant's skyline.

Obvious the the man was a the type to compliment a woman; what remained to be seen is if he was the type of smooth talker she had encountered several times on missions. Kiani never understood the reasoning of certain men to assume she was easy prey because of her looks. At least one man who tried to swoon her to his advantage is now sitting in a cell in some prison installation.

The blonde Dantari brushed an errant strand of her long hair behind her ear as she replied. "Well obviously you wanted not to eat alone. I mean why say something out loud if you didn't want some company?" She smiled pleasantly. "Besides I don't like eating alone either." she added.

She closed her eyes a moment and whispered a prayer in her native tongue. " Askan seema cha nokuru veeta sei." then she looked back at the dark haired man. " I am Kiani, Jedi Padawan to Master Karna Hakh'khar." She offered her hand to shake. "Exactly what is a Jedi Ace? That something like a blademaster?" she asked.

If there was one thing about being a Jedi that Quinn liked the most, it was the ability to feel and see what other people were thinking. Then again, Quinn reminded himself, Gurlanin were all innately force sensitive and used the force to modify their genetic coding, which itself was variable and adaptable, to change the shape, size, and colors of their bodies. It was an interesting thing to be sure, but what he found more interesting than his physiology, or even the female anatomy, was the curiosity and the personality of the woman across from him. Most Jedi knew of his reputation, or at least, most Jedi with the rank of Knight or higher, few of the padawans knew or suspected anything about his past.

The one though, she knew nothing, perhaps it was time to start with a clean slate? He wondered if that would make a difference, he played the part he was supposed to play as a Jedi if more people might interact with him. But that would be lying to them and himself, the latter of which he felt was worse than the prior, as he had done that for many years before he had joined the order. It was time to stop pbeing afraid of who he was, and as he nibble a bit on his sandwich and chased it with a spoonful of soup, the Jedi Ace heard the woman question what it was that he actually was, at least as far as profession. Curious that she didn't know, but then the art of the Jedi Ace was few these days, many of those that had been the Jedi's top pilots had died in the previous wars that the galaxy had experienced, and he was one of the few that had volunteered to rebuild them.

"Sometimes thinking out loud is just a habit, and it's not like the people here can't listen in on my thoughts without my knowing anyways," Quinn uttered with a dry chuckle as he began to dissect his stake like a surgeon opening up someone for surgery.

While he paid attention to his steak, however, the woman spoke in a foreign tongue, one his mind instinctively began to understand through his bond with the force. Curious, why say a prayer of the... Dantari people, when she herself looked much like a normal human being? As he watched the woman though, and listened to how she spoke to him, he doubted that she was anything but normal, and that exotic nature of hers only earned her a few more points in his rating of her in his little black book, and not just because she was highly attractive, though of course that helped. When she introduced herself, the spy offered a sly smile and returned the gesture with a firm shake of her hand.

"Vollas," he said with a grin. "Quinn Vollas, Jedi Padawan to no-one, and a Gurlanin Spy.. or pilot, whichever fits your tongue better." Accidental innuendic pun aside, Quinn thought the meeting was going rather well for the time being. "You're right though, I don't like eating alone. Plus if I am to eat with someone I do like someone to look at when I talk to them, and if you don't mind my saying, you're a lot better looking than the hardasses that decide they can boss me around."

"As far as my title and profession goes," Quinn continued after he sipped some juice and finished cutting apart his steak. "A Jedi Ace is someone that uses the force as an aid to already extroardinary piloting skills. I've been flying since I was twelve, driving since I was eight, and spying ever since I was old enough to know how to eavesdrop. In short, a Jedi Ace takes what the federation pilots due to the next level and beyond, acting as angels on wings to help anyone that needs it. Personally, I take it a step farther and use my shapeshifting abilities to my advantage when I'm ground side. What about you? Any aspirations or class you've set yourself onto?"

Kiani pondered a moment Quinn’s question. She really had not given thought to what she would do after attaining Knighthood. The rumors that she would eventually become the Order’s Battlemaster were beginning to move more swiftly through the ranks. She didn’t put much stock in the rumors because she felt she had a lot more to learn.

“I don’t know really, I’m just a Padawan still so I haven’t really given it much thought. I suppose I will become a Sentinel given my wide range of skills.” She said as she started cutting her steak. “So you’re a real good flyer? I don’t fly so good myself. I can take off and get to where I’m going with the help of an astromech, but landing doesn’t seem to be a forte’ of mine. If it wasn’t for Artee I would have crashed more than a few times.” She added with a slight flush of embarrassment on her cheeks.

“I am very good healer though, what I can’t heal with roots, herbs and bacta patches I can with the Force. I’m a good tracker on the ground and I am very good with my lightsabers.” She commented humbly. She said before she chewed on a bit of steak.

After sipping some blue milk she asked. “You said you were a Gur-lan-in….” she pronounced the name of his species brokenly to make sure she pronounced it right. “… That’s not a species I’m familiar with. You look human to me. What makes your species different from humans?’ She asked quizzically as her curiosity went into overdrive

((Because this was a PM for entrance/invite only thread, I'd prefer to keep going with just Kiani and I. Thanks.))

So she was rather skilled afterall? Quinn thought he had sensed that about her but had been unsure, at the least he figured she was fairly competent in the force with a lighter air about her, one that was easy to carry, gentle as it wer,e like a breeze. He liked the thought of that, though unlike the breeze that seemed to flow around Kiani, Quinn felt as if the energy that surrounded him and permeated his being was more akin to silk sheets, light and comforting, like a second skin as it were. It was natural though, the force accented the shapeshifting abilities of the Gurlanin species, so it was natural for it to cling to him as if he were a beacon of light covered in a spring morning's dew.

When she modestly approach her other capabilities, such as being a fairly poor pilot, and having skill with healing and a blade, he nodded slowly. She seemed to have her class well thought out, at least for the time being. Sentinel's were skilled beings, Quinn felt that he himself was one, as well as a Jedi Ace, given his affinity for flying. Skill with a blade, he had some training and could hold his own, but he prefered the feel of a blaster or slugthrower to the grip of a lightsaber or knife. He couldn't wait to approach the topic of her flying abilities, perhaps offer her some flight lessons even. That would be fun, and for once he might actually have made or would make a good impression on someone among the Ranks of the Jedi Order.

The proper enunciation of his race's name brought a smile to his face, one of amusement and happiness that few had seen as of late. Usually it was all sly grins and cocky smirks, but this one was a genuine smile. It was not often he found people interested in him or his species unless for their force affinity or their shapeshifting talents, both of which people feared and toook for granted. Quinn almost wished it were different, but the amusing song she had strung together with her questions batted aside all other noise so the pilot could focus on the rhythm of their conversation, all else shut out but herself and him.

"You seem to have picked your class well though, I hear our Grand Master was a Scout and a Sentinel when he joined the order, at least by our classifications. I hea these days he's akin to a battle master or a watchman, the latter mostly though. I think you'd be a fine example for the generation of Jedi we're a part of as any of those classes," commented the Gurlanin before he took a bite of his sandwich to let her chew on the thought.

"Your other skills aside," Quinn continued as he swallowed. "I can help you with piloting if you like, I'm not averse to giving flight lessons. Besides, for someone as nice as you I'd give them free of charge."

A gentle smile and another bite of his sandwich and Quinn thought this meeting was going pretty well. It was his first encounter with the young woman surely, but he did have a strange feeling about things, as if there was more to all of this than what met the eye. Quinn was reminded by his charming cunning that he had yet to lay the persuasion on thick in their conversation, had forgotten to use his natural affinity in the force or his handsome looks to his advantage. Unfortunately for his spy-driven desires, he paid no heed to them, and instead decided to focus acutely on her question about his species.

"That's because Gurlanin are a Polymorphic species... shapeshifters is the term people like to use most often. To tell you the truth, my true form isn't human-like," he began softly.

It was a touchy subject at times, most people thought that "Gurlanin" simply meant shapeshifting humans, but that wasn't the case. When friends had found out he was more dog than aything, especially women, they had instantly, it seemed, become distant. He was hesitant to bring about such a display, but he felt it wouldn't hurt to show off just a little, especially given he had modified his flight suit with a number of seals to allow him a more beastly appearance if he desired to intimidate his foes. A small demonstration first, he decided, then he might break out the tail or some other beastly characteristic of his species. So slowly, as he began to speak, the spy began to let his fingernails turn to claws and some of his teeth become more jagged like those of a canine, or in this case, perhaps a vampire.

"I am, in truth, most akin to a canine in my real form, though by my last count it has been nearly two months since I have resorted to being on all fours, and that was merely out of complete and utter primal needs to run on the plains of Dantooine on all fours... Not that I can't do that in this form anyways," stated Quinn simply as he began to retract his sharp-toothed smile and the claws on his fingers. "But I spend most of my time as a Human... or as human-like beings. I can change anything from skin, eye, and hair color, to the texture of my skin and the size of my body. Useful trick to have at times, and I've got a number of forms to choose from; I've shifted into Zabraks, Twi'leks, Quarren, Humans, Barabel, Wookiees, a number of other races, including one time I changed myself into a Verpine. Not the most pleasant looking species but it gets the point across. Now before you ask, yes, I am male, full blooded with all the parts to prove it... erm, not that you would be interested anyways."

As Quinn spoke Kiani ate listening to every word the man spoke. The Dantari’s keen mind storing every detail of the information for use at some later point to her advantage. Master Hakh’khar had taught her to collect and use any information to her best advantage, whether it was about a person, place, or object.

When he offered to help her with her flying she nodded enthusiastically. ”That would be great. I’m sure my Master would be grateful for that.” She replied with a smile. Honestly it would be her that would be grateful; she never truly got the hang of flying. Truthfully she wasn’t too bad after she got ground as long as she didn’t get into combat. She was sure that she would die if that ever happened.

As Quinn continued on to explain exactly what a Gurlanin was, Kiani looked at him intently. Observation was a very important key to telling if someone was lying to you. Kiani had learned the lesson the hard way during a mission. Though through a masterful plan that she helped devise they uncovered the deceit, but the sting of her being used during that mission never really left her.

Quinn shifted some of his features in front of her; obviously as a small demonstration of what he could do. Her gaze was of sheer fascination not repulsion or some other negative emotion. A random thought crossed her mind as she wondered if her Animal friendship technique would work on him. She quickly dismissed the thought when he mentioned Dantooine.

The mere mention of her homeworld brought back a flood of memories to her. The lush lavender green grasses of the Matale’ plains were she would run as a child, the tall Bilba trees she would climb to survey the land as she hunted with her father, and the various clear blue rivers that she swam in flashed across her mind. Some of her memories, however , were not as pleasant. At age fifteen she had returned to her clan’s spring camp site to a gruesome thought that will be forever etched in her mind. Kiani had found her whole clan slaughtered including her parents. She still has occasional nightmare of that day.

Kiani shook the recollection from her mind and asked. “So you like my homeworld, do you?” She flashed a radiant smile. “The view from Askan’s peak in the Fallen Mountains is absolutely beautiful at sunset.” She commented. “So your race isn’t sexless then? That could lead into some interesting discussion. Purely from a healing standpoint, of course.” She commented.

So she did have a continued interest in flying? That was good, Quinn thought, they'd have time to get to know one another, perhaps form something of a lasting friendship. It was either that, his mind thoughtm, or an easier way to approach more intimate contact. The thought of such passion caused himto smile slightly, a small chuckle rose in his throat as his features faded back to normal and he began to eat once more. While Shapeshifting was a rare talent, in terms of there being trillions of beings and only a few million that had the ability, it also could be disconcerting, especially when people close to one learned the true form or nature of such self-manipulation, which led in turn to the deceit of others.

But what Quinn felt from Kiani was not deceit, was not disgust nor negativity at such a rarity; she was fascinated. At first he found it odd that she found him so interesting, but perhaps it was better to say, a cynical part of his mind chimed, that she was more interested in his ability to shift at will than in him. She could be the same, his doubting mind whispered, but he refused that idea at first. For now, she seemed to be genuinely interested and intrigued, though the slight change in her presence registered quickly to the spy. As an empath, he sensed emotions rather easily, and when he felt her mind shift from the present to the past, though what that past was he had no idea, he felt that something black... something dark had happened to her that had led to her initiation into the Jedi.

He knew not what that meant, but it couldn't have been worse than his own path here, and that was what he wished to improve. Their paths had crossed it seemed, perhaps it was for the better, the turning point in their lives where things would become brighter. An optimistic view to be certain, but ever one to feel confident that the future could be achieved, Quinn continued their conversation and made special note that Dantooine was her homeworld.

"Well we'll have to schedule a time for you to work on your technique," Quinn responded as he quickly chewed and swallowed another segment of steak. "I've got a ship of my own, durable thing to say the least about it. I'll take you up sometime, we can see how you handle my ship eh? Who knows, maybe you just need a guiding hand to perfect the art."

"As far as your homeworld goes, it reminded me of the plains I grew up near, and the villages I used to... visit... when I wanted someone other than my own family to talk to," continued the shapeshifter as he eased another morsel down his gullet, still trying to chew on his tongue to keep from any innuendic comments about having a certain gender. "No we're quite full of males and females, I came from a family of nine children. Lucky number five myself. As for intriguing conversation... well there's more than healing to be approached in regards to physiology."

"But you know," the spy said as he mulled over what had been said so far. "This has to be some of the best conversation I've had in... years I think."
