The perpetual overhang of clouds turns the world dark even in comparatively good weather. The air is always in a state of muggy humidity. This inhospitable climate plays host to a variety of some of the most unique plants and animal species in the galaxy, adapted to live in the conditions presented by Donovia. Botanists galaxy-wide have reached out to study the complex evolution of plants that live with a lack of light and aren't drowned by the water. Some specimens of plants will even thrive submerged under the water. While most of the fauna dwell in the highlands, there have always been legends about the creatures that live in the swamps. Most were told by the first settlers to the planet who deeply feared the swamps. Tales of grown men, women, and children disappearing or being eaten or meeting some other fate via swamp animals are still told to this day, instilling superstition. Potential monsters range from humanoid Swampmen to giant hulking beasts waiting in the waters. The validity of these stories is disputed as extensive testing in the swamps has never really been done. ![]() Donovian swamplands during Winter, a signal tower stands in the background Source Image Thousands of years of swamp, river, and ocean drainage have resulted in some of the largest, most complex series of underground caves yet to be found in the galaxy located just beneath the surface of Donovia. Though the crust of the planet is only a few kilometers thick at any given point, it contains within vast richness of ores and raw materials that have drawn miners and businessmen alike to the planet for centuries. These range from metals for crafting to oils for burning to crystals for aesthetics. Living within the caves are a wealth of subterranean life, most infamously the magnaworms. Magnaworms, not really worms at all, are a humanoid species that feeds on certain types of ore and drink from the drainwater, although they will act as carnivores if meat presents itself. The pale beings will die when exposed to any kind of light, crawl on the ceilings of caves with a series of eyeballs on their backs, and drop down to ambush any kind of target. According to legend, they creatures are actually the evolved descendents of Rakatan settlers who ventured into the caves and were forced to survive there. There's no proof of it, but there's no solid conclusion on where they could have come from. Later settlers were picked off and attacked by packs of the predators. Much like the rest of the planet, the sealife is rich and diverse. The food chain is dominated by whaladon and carnivorous fish that feed on smaller fish and so on. The beauty of the seas is generally attributed to their magnificent coral reefs and undersea algae, some of which are luminous. Like the swamps, the oceans have never been definitively explored. There are, however, an unknown number of undersea sanctuaries originally housing religious monks. The seclusion and natural beauty attracted the pagan monks. Little is known about these small societies, although it is widely accepted that they became cults. ![]() Underwater cell Source Image Perhaps the strangest facet of Donovia's natural wonders are the Farlands. The Farlands are the focal point of a global phenomenon called "foo" by the locals. Foo is caused by abnormal atmospheric magnetic fields that react any object containing naturally occurring, microscopic amounts of Donovian "dust". The reaction causes objects containing dust (rock, ore, soil) to periodically and spontaneously become harder or softer, depending on the nature of the flareup. The effect is almost unnoticeable on the surface, where dust is less concentrated. Historically, foo has been both a blessing and a curse for miners. The phenomenon has yet to be fully understood by scientists, but ways to manipulate the foo for more sinister purposes have been found. The Farlands are located at the icy poles of Donovia where the magnetic field is strongest. At these points, the foo is so significant that it will actually begin to bend the forces of gravity to a point where they're either nonexistent, fatally strong, or bent to an angle. Dusted matter will warp, often changing material form (i.e. rock turning to liquid at room temperature, water becoming solid at temperatures higher than freezing point) and becoming distorted. Mining these regions is impossible and the adverse affects on sentient life in these regions make them uninhabitable. The Farlands are a constant source of mystery and intrigue, being mostly uncharted to this day. Culture Legend has it that the first settlers of Donovia were actually Rakata that settled the planet before the days of the Infinite Empire. The story goes that the Rakatan colonization party were cut off from the rest of their people and stranded on the planet. Turning inward to the caves, they evolved into the magnaworms while leaving behind some of their technology for later colonists to find. The Rakata may have been the first to settle Donovia Source image Over the next few thousand years, the world was untouched by empires and wars. It was only during the Galactic Republic's Great Manifest period that the world was officially colonized and claimed by the Republic. Thousands of colonists flocked the planet, quickly discovering the value to be had from mining the precious ores. Elsewhere in the galaxy, the Alsakan Crisis was in full swing. Alsaka and Coruscant, both seeking control of the Republic and both appreciating the importance of the planet, went into open war with each other in the year 17,000 BBY. One battle was fought in the now booming mines of Donovia between Alsakan and Coruscanti agents that ended in a stalemate. Several hundred miners and agents were killed in the battle. It remains the only official battle fought by the Republic on Donovian soil. Coruscant maintained control of the planet and all of its assets, handing off control of the planet to a Corellian mining conglomerate while they turned their attention to expanding the Republic to the Mid Rim - an activity funded by Donovia. The conglomerate set up trade routes running through system to capitalize on profit. To maintain the constant flow of trade ships through the atmosphere, titanic metal signal towers were erected all over the planet. Taking care of the towers were a task given to the Rainmen, an iconic image of Donovia. The Rainmen were instantly recognizable by their absurd hoods and raincoats issued to them by the conglomerate. It was a time of great prosperity for the Republic and the mining businesses. For the people, however, every day was a struggle. With little farming to be done, citizens were dependent on food shipments to feed their families. This proved to be less than adequate as the population expanded. Schooling was virtually non-existent outside of the home. Homes were often insufficient to protect against the elements. The thing these people had were the mines. Mining itself was a dangerous career. Throw in starvation, little to no safety regulations, and the constant threat of magnaworms, and mining was a certain death. Should the provider for the family be killed in this fashion, there were very few options for their families. ![]() A Dorovian cave Source image TO BE CONTINUED, LEGENDS. |
