"Houk bounty hunter"|Star Wars Gamer 6

Name: Ferix Vasquez
Homeworld:
Nickname/Alias: "Big Momma"
Date of Birth: 9 ABY

Faction: Galactic Federation Marines
Rank: Sergeant Major

Species: Houk
Height: 6'8''
Weight: 240 lbs (using a chart found here)
Hair Color: N/A
Eye Color: Yellow
Skin Color: Dark Orange

Appearance:

Deep blue skin, looked like a whale. Tall and husky, he was an intimidating presence to behold. He often complained about how weak plastic blasters broke in melee combat because of how hard he hit his opponents with them.

Piercing yellow eyes

He was well known for his deep voice, like a bass singer. He has

Personality:

  • Aggressive: Due to the limited oxygen and power supply in their spacesuits, Ferix is used to pushing his Marines toward the objective as quickly as possible, regardless of the tactical circumstances.
  • Energetic: Vasquez never let the men see him when he was less than enthusiastic, wishing to maintain their morale even in the worst of times.
  • Humble: Despite his status as a senior NCO, he had no problem doing menial work like moving heavy crates, which normally industrial droids would perform.
  • Lawful: He is much 'by-the-book', and although he hates to leave his men behind, it's not up to him and in being pragmatic, often times they lack the resources and it would incur far heavier casualties to try to mount a rescue. Despite these views, his great compassion for his unit means he can be talked into looking into 'loopholes' in orders.
  • Leadership: Since officers typically stay at a specialized command station onboard their ships to coordinate the Marines from a distance, Ferix is used to leading them in the field. Although he'd hardly enough himself a psychiatric therapist, he kept responsible for the well-being and morale of his unit: he paid strict attention to the morals and behavior of the junior NCOs so he may discover even the least irregularities quickly and correct them.
  • Interior Management: If the Battalion CO concerned himself with how the unit operated in junction with others and dealt with planning joint-operations, the Battalion XO and Ferix concerned themselves with keeping the rosters filled and intact with competent people.
  • Quality over Quantity: As a highly-trained professional, Ferix was opposed to using massed small TIE-style boarding pods to cut into ships, preferring to enter a small team in a single sturdy shuttle to perform a surgical strike.
  • Strategem: In terms of policy, Ferix saw the mobile warrior in a powered battle-suit as a much more viable alternative to a battle tank, and that bridging the gap between armor and infantry would be a major breakthrough in military doctrine.
  • Two Sides: Toward the senior officers and his commander, Vasquez's counsel was calm, settled and unquivocally accurate in his reasoning, with a sedate voice and good address, patient even when they utter complete stupidity; he does this to promote and enforce their authority. Toward the boys, he is tough and mean, in the way that a drill instructor would be; his short temper earned him the nickname "Mother", but because he was so large, they naned him "Big Momma"; he grudgingly accepted it as long as it wasn't said to his face.
  • Underhanded: He was a shrewd warrior, skilled in sneaking up on his opponents. That talent served him well as a Strike trooper, though he felt that the mimetic envirosuits ruined the fun of stealth kills.
Weaknesses and Strengths:

As one of the few Marines on the Vanguard with a Special Operations background, he is called on to lead commando operations that are effectively labelled as 'patrols' to keep the noise down.

Education & Training:

Childhood: He was fluent in the mixed alphabetic-verb and pictograph-noun vocally-tonal language of Houkese.

Sector Forces:

He learned basics such as use of missile weapons and grenades.

SpecForce Marine:

Although naval MPs often handled starship security, Ferix still handled those matters on occasion despite such matters being beneath his unit.

In capturing enemy ships, he was expected to be able to get their systems quickly online in the face of a counterattack. This meant they were also trained to reduce collateral damage, and they needed to have an intricate understanding of starship design to do this, from freighters to space stations. He was trained in computer hacking, operating powersuits, and starship gunnery.

While shaped charges were the ideal way of gaining access to internal bulkheads onboard starships, often they were required to look into more precise methods. Some include slicing into door controls, using dynamic hammers to knock down the doors, using fusion cutters to tear through them, or even using thermite to melt through them. One of the most imaginative ways was using a carbonite gun to freeze and then shatter the door.

Strike troops:

Melee combat with vibroblades was emphasized.

Spent months training onboard captured Yuuzhan Vong vessels.

As part of his education, he studied the mission reports of Storm Unit, an elite Marine unit attached with the CRS Liberty during the Galactic Civil War.

Spacetroopers:

Deploying from a Gamma-class shuttle or a CR25, Ferix had an eye for spotting the weak spots in a starship, because often times, there wasn't a convenient airlock that was cut for them, unless they deployed from a Katarn-class. They still tried to find a good hangar when they could.

Aside from capturing ships, the Spacetroopers were required to repair or sabotage satellites, crack hulls, and minelay or minesweep, and thus had to fortify themselves with technical skills such as powersuit repair. He was spent time getting used to integrated weapons in his armor.

He also received special training in operating in heavy radiation.

Equipment
FA-3 flechette launcher with a vibrosaw bayonet
-A long-barreled flechette launcher, it had longer range than most shotguns. Despite its dispersion pattern, even one hit could prove lethal, and the flechette was very effective at penetrating light armor from personal protection to that of repulsorcraft. Yet, it was even more devastating in the close-quarters of a starship.
-Although the teeth had a tendency to get clogged up, the cutting edges were embedded with diamond grit and the chain was made of tungsten carbide. The vibrosaw had an excellent reputation for hacking through bulkheads. Although there was some kickback, someone of Ferix's strength had little trouble directing its awesome power.

Zero-G powered spacetrooper armor (may substitute in light spacetrooper armor)

  • It protected him against depressurization, radiation, electrical discharge, deafening noises, and chemicals such as the ship's firefighting system, a mixture of nitrogen and carbon-dioxide. It had an advanced sensor suite to compensate for smoke and darkness in the corridors of a damaged vessel.
  • The armor weighed 38 kg.
  • Automatic Bacta Injector
  • Consumables: It had 4 hours of power, and 10 of oxygen.
  • Extended-range Comlink
  • Headlights on each side of the propulsion pack.
  • Hermetic Vacuum-Seal
  • Integrated weapon systems:

    1. 2x Shoulder-Mounted Magazine-Fed Grenade launchers (30 grenades each): Capable of firing concussion grenades, which were lethal in narrow corridors due to overpressure, and gas grenades which were also very effective in cramped spaces, Ferix's unit modified the launcher to fire EMP grenades as well, which could scramble the systems of enemy spacesuits.
    2. Left forearm-mounted Mini-Proton [6x]Torpedo Launcher
    3. Left wrist-mounted Knuckle plate left-side aKraB Clip-point Vibrodagger: A modification to the armor, taking inspiration from the Katarn commando armor, Ferix's unit added retractable vibrodaggers to their armor. Ironically, these eighteen centimeter blades could cut through Mark III Katarn body armor with ease. Remarkably, the vibration cell caused sonic damage to its targets, so much that that on a single shallow slash, it could rupture arteries and organs without the blade having to touch them.

  • Magnetic couplers on feet
  • Magnetic holster belt for his tools
  • Rocket Propulsion Pack w/auxiliary units on feet and repulsorlift 'altitude control thrusters.'
Light spacetrooper armor: He wore a sleeker, more mobile version of the old Zero-G stormtrooper armor that was painted in New Republic Blue and had a more open-visor - might consider toning down on armor mounted weapons.

Miscellaneous items:

  • Dynamic hammer, a vibrotool for bashing down doors. Jokingly, it's been called the "Hammer of Thor" for the sheer force it can put into each blow.
  • Vise-grips with a wire cutter/stripper (EOD kit).
  • Refillable, metallic butane lighter with a wind-resistant catalizer coil. Adjustable flame height and built-in fuel gauge; primarily used to light a fuze.
Right-foreman mounted Blaster Cannon
Fusion Cutters

Force Powers N/A

History:

Born to one of the thirty-one colonies in the Ansuroer sector, his father was a member of the Lijuter Congress. Shortly after the start of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Ferix volunteered to join the New Republic Army. He was well noted for his physical strength, having engaged Vong warriors in hand-to-hand combat at Rychel, where he earned his first Redbird after being struck by a fighting claw, and walking out of the engagement totally bruised after being hit by numerous thud bugs. He proved himself to be a dilligent soldier, and showed willingness to save his wounded comrades on Gyndine while, literally under heavy fire, earning the Crescent of Valor for his conduct in action. During the Fall of Coruscant, his unit stationed onboard the Orbital Defense Headquarters, later evacuating as it crashed into the great city below. Rallying on the surface, they were among last to escape, forming the last line of defense around the New Republic Intelligence Headquarters; ultimately they retreated in good order. Later, he earned the Kenobi Medallion during the evacuation of Borleias, when he volunteered to stay behind and hold the biotics facility against a massive Vong ground onslaught.

Becoming a highly-decorated soldier as the war progressed, as a Corporal he was recommendated by his commanding officer to the Rebel SpecForce. Passing the Q course, he became part of the Strike troops, which served notably at Selvaris; they stormed Peace Brigade prisoner transports in what would be romanticized as the Great Raid, rescuing many high-profile Galactic Alliance officers. They received a meritorious unit citation for this act, and would later distinguish themselves once again in the Liberation of Coruscant.

For the next decade, Vasquez spent time getting to know the officers, serving as a proxy between the men and whoever was his commanding officre at the time, delivering paperwork to the CO after the XO filtered through it, keeping the NCos and the junior officers up-to-date, and orienting new personnel as they came and left. In 40 ABY, he was part of the Space Rangers at the General Crix Madine Military Reserve. During the Second Galactic Civil War, Staff Sergeant Vasquez saw his men divided between nations at Fondor, to those supporting Caedus and those supporting Niathal. Onboard one of the ships loyal to Niathal, Vasquez helped establish order on the ship and prepared to receive an immediate Imperial attack. In the ensuing battle, Imperial Spacetroopers found themselves in a legendary battle with the Alliance SpaceOps. Surviving that day, Vasquez remembered the prowess that those soldiers displayed.

After the war, Vasquez spent time serving inside the Imperial Remnant. Now the most combat-elite stormtrooper unit in the Empire since the dissolution of the Imperial Royal Guard, serving as an aide to a military attache to the Stormtrooper Academy on Bastion from the Coruscanti Home Guard was a great honor for the veteran Sergeant.

Ferix observed the training regime of the Stormtroopers overall, and though brutal, he observed that while the Alliance SpaceOps had to breach airlocks or create airlocks to gain access to enemy starships, the Spacetroopers pioneered tactics of breaching starships without the use of a dedicated boarding vessel. Intrigued by this prospect, he returned to Coruscant with new techniques and tactics to spread throughout the ranks, working closely with the battalion S3.

By 54 ABY, as a Gunnery Sergeant, he was the Platoon Sergeant of a HWS Platoon and responsible for supervising routine drills for his company. Since it was common naval doctrine for the Marines to spread across the ship so enemy boarders couldn't pin them at a single point, they constantly trained to be able to rapidly traverse across the ship and close the breach. He also went to great lengths to ensure that his company had excess to a holographic shooting range where they could virtually practice with some of the more exotic weaponry in their arsenals. During this time, Vasquez's unit explored the prospect of orbital drops as they established themselves as an elite unit. Using the repulsorlifts on their dropsuits, they were able to slow their descent from high-altitude, and with their armored spacesuits, they often fought in toxic environments.

In 61 ABY, he was assigned to the Vanguard, now a Company First Sergeant in the Marine detachment. Under the command of Captain Saul Wrathson, they were ambushed by two ISDs near the Black Nebula. During the opening salvo, the Marines were called on to assist damage control while being asked to fortify the hangar with anything available. Attempting to capture the Senators onboard, the pirates launched several waves of massive boarding parties; during the early waves, Vasquez hurled crates at them. Overwhelmed by the constant barrage of frontal attacks, the Marines were pushed from the hangar to the junction where the corridors separated. After the officers around him were put down out of action, Vasquez made a last stand around the elevators leading to the bridge, until his unit ran out of ammunition. Cut off from the rest of the battalion, they charged the enemy with vibroknives and bayonets, forming a gap in the pirates' formation that allowed the remaining Marines to reform and repulse the boarders.

Badly wounded in the final push to drive the pirates out of the hangar, Sergeant Vasquez was nonetheless one of the few Marines left standing. For their action that day, they were awarded with a Navy Unit Commendation, and he himself, ontop of earning another Redbird, also received a Usos Cluster for exceptional valor in leading the counterattack. Nonetheless, it was a bitter moment, receiving one of the heaviest casualties rates of any unit in the Federation's history in a single battle. With over half of their strength lost, Ferix is now the Battalion Sergeant Major of the remaining outfit, and alongside the Deck Chief, the most senior enlisted person onboard the ship with over thirty-five years of active service.

To this day, he is proud to serve with such a rugged and diverse assortment of well-equipped and well-trained men and women. He is a hard worker, and takes pride in the level of skill in which he carries out his job. Now, he has to ingrain the same values in another yet batch of recruits.
