Sora Bulq Shem Biographical information Homeworld: Nal Hutta Born: 24 ABY (40 galactic standard years old) Physical description Species: Weequay Gender: Male Height: 1.74 meters Mass: 79 kilograms Hair colour: Black Eye colour: Brown Political information Affiliation: The New Jedi Order Position: Jedi Knight (Sentinel) Occupational history: Mercenary, Slicer, Spacer Assignment: Self-directed investigations in Hutt Space Biography Act I Shem was born to a lucky gambler and his wife, and for the parts of his life that he cannot remember he enjoyed the luxury of being rich, although before he had even reached the half-way mark in his infancy he was forced by the circumstances of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of Nal Hutta to join the majority of those on Nal Hutta, in poverty. Despite the presence of hunger as a primary source of motivation throughout childhood and adolescence, Shem grew up to be a relatively healthy young man gifted with intelligence. This intelligence led him to begin work in the most common and fruitful line of work for strong Weequay males on Hutta: mercenary work. Well-paid work for the young man was found under the employment of Kolquo the Hutt, and in the six years he held this position he travelled to a great number of exotic planets, learning how to handle a number of weapons, pilot a variety of ships, speak Basic and most importantly how to slice. Hailed as a computer savant by his primary mentor in how to manipulate the coding and set-up of computers, the young Weequay’s natural ability for slicing computers was in truth a result of his natural force-sensitivity. Over these years Shem developed a pseudo-addiction to the thrill that he experienced whenever he set off on a new job, and when a three-month spell of unemployment followed the end of his contract he soon found himself in dire need of both credits and, more importantly, excitement. In perhaps his most arrogant, self-confident moment ever Shem decided to hack into the network of Kolquo and download information of all business dealings and operations that had happened, were happening and were going to happen, with the intent of selling the information to one of Kolquo’s rivals on Nar Shaddaa. After all, Kolquo’s network was what he knew best and where he had the highest chance of success – it was nothing personal. Shem’s subsequent flight from Nal Hutta was quick, precise and very lucky. Kolquo, a very angry Hutt, had men after his former employee within thirty minutes of the download being completed. Shem was out the door of his apartment with every belonging that mattered in twenty-seven minutes. His seat on a shuttle going directly to the Smuggler’s Moon was booked, and Shem was standing in the presence of Valdo the Hutt by the time Kolquo knew where he had gone. Shem sold the information for twenty-five thousand credits, and used some of them to vanish into the seedy world of Nar Shaddaa for a few months while Valdo ruthlessly and methodically absorbed Kolquo’s assets. When he knew it was safe, Shem emerged from hiding to a number of job offers from information brokers who needed a good slicer with a quick mind and a history of good luck. Outer Rim militia barracks, commercial space stations, diplomatic corvettes and even one Imperial Star Destroyer all functioned as unwitting hosts to Shem’s work for the Umbaran information broker, Eli Qian. Although he only spent two years in this line of work, Shem felt more of a slicer than ever had a mercenary, and found that operating independently was something he was far more suited to and comfortable in doing. It also got him a lot more credits. On his twenty-eighth birthday Shem used his impressive sum of money to purchase two presents for himself: a freighter he had stolen himself (in an escape from a Hutt’s private yacht), from his employer, and a retrofitted and personally redesigned bowcaster. For the following twelve months, Shem was a spacer. Dubbing his ship the Winter King, Shem travelled the galaxy, seeing a number of impressive sights and visiting the Core Worlds for the first time, building a droid remote for company and enjoying his makeshift lifestyle. A lack of purpose soon became obnoxiously clear in the Weequay’s life, and he found himself questioning where he should go from the position in found himself in. Like so many before him who had been faced with this problem, Shem ended up in one of the bars of the Wheel. Act II Members of the both the Old and New Jedi Orders have frequented the Wheel more times that both their councils would like to admit and the patrons of the space station have been aware of. Padawans stay for a day or two on their way back from long, interstellar journeys, members of the exploration corps make a short detour, investigators find some of their contacts, and every once in a while, a Jedi comes aboard to find a very kind Weequay who stops an angry Cathar from smashing a bottle round the back of her head. Jedi Master Rion’l’vawrn Herreis had found her next apprentice. Shem was reluctant to the idea of joining the Jedi Order at first. He had heard of them, although most what he had heard were the stories of the Skywalkers and the Solo twins instead of the Order itself. He took his time, researched the responsibilities, both voluntary and compulsory, involved in joining, and eventually travelled to Coruscant for the second time in his life to accept Master Herreis’ offer. A week later Shem had quarters in the Ossus academy, a pair of beige robes, a training lightsaber and a request to leave the Winter King in the extensive hangar bays of the Coruscant Jedi temple. Shem showed impressive dedication to his Jedi training, rising to the challenge and going over what was required of him, and his enthusiasm could be compared to that of Corran Horn’s nearly four decades before him. Shem quickly learnt his natural strengths and weaknesses, combining his existing combat, piloting, slicing and general life skills with his new Jedi abilities to make himself both a unique combatant and a unique thinker, earning prestige for initiative, creativity and ingenuity. When Shem’s core, basic training came to an end it came as a surprise to absolutely none of his tutors that Master Herreis took him under her wing to personally oversee his further development. Over the course of five years Master Herreis and Shem were responsible for the resolution of four diplomatic crises, the shutting down of three illegal factories (weapons, droids and faulty starship engines), the capture of two smugglers and the very heroic saving of one princess, alongside other missions that sent Shem and his master to all kinds of planets and cultures. By the end of these years, Shem’s knowledge and understanding of the Jedi Code had been proven, as had his ability to reflect deeply and bathe himself deep in the force. The solely self-directed construction of his first functioning lightsaber, his frequent displays of courage and his ability to cope with physical and mental duress all topped off the presentation Master Herreis made in her request to the Jedi Council for Shem to be knighted. Shem was presented with two gifts at his knighting ceremony. The first, from Federation officials, was a complete pardon to all the crimes he had committed prior to joining the order (although the number that had been done in Federation space were small), and the second, from his now-former master, was a mission to Myrkr to investigate rumours that members of a small criminal syndicate were trying to recreate the terribly voxyn from the Yuuzhan Vong War, with the intent of selling them at a high price to those who wanted definite protection from a Jedi. Aboard the ruined hulk of the Baanu Rass Shem marvelled at the Yuuzhan Vong biotechnology, and after arresting the criminals and taking them to the Federation authorities, he volunteered for a six month-long exploration trip around Zonama Sekot being conducted as a joint effort between the educational and exploration corps that required the presence of at least two Jedi Knights for council authorisation. Shem offered both his lightsaber and some room aboard the Winter King, and soon found himself in the rainforests of the living planet. Little adventure befell upon the Jedi Knight during this safari, and for the first time in his life he experienced true tranquillity, believing the experience brought him closer to the Force. Personality and traits Powers and abilities Possessions • Lightsaber: The formal weapon of a Jedi Knight, not as clumsy or simple as a blaster. More skill than sight is required for its use, and Shem has been trained well in the use of this elegant weapon. His own weapon features a hilt that is optimised for the use of the fourth and seventh forms of lightsaber combat (Ataru and Juyo), while the crystal inside focuses a yellow blade. • Bowcaster, ‘Nyna’ (modified): A version of the Wookiee projectile weapon that has been resized slightly for Shem’s size, the Jedi Knight earned this weapon in his younger days, before joining the Order, and has developed a sentimental attachment to it, naming it Nyna. • Droid remote, ‘212’ (unique): Built by Shem in his time as a spacer, this droid remote was originally built based on the designs for an engineering remote, but has since be modified after Shem saw the design of Jedi training remotes. The droid features an inbuilt low-powered blaster pistol, a cutting laser, various repair tools, several datacards and a high quality repulsor lift. It’s name was derived from a programming bug that occurred during its initial construction. • ‘The Winter King’: The Winter King is an old ship that would’ve been long outdated were it not for the numerous upgrades and modifications that have been made to it over a number of years. I'm starting work on this character again. Feedback, suggestions for improvement and even completely new ideas on what could be incorporated into the character would be greatly appreciated. |
