Cirus

New Sith Order
"She's dead Dena; I just don't know what to do now that she's gone."

It had been almost a week since Cirus had discovered his mother lying cold on her bed, blood running out of a cut across her neck. No one on Nar Shaddaa cared about anyone else, and the only reason that anyone had even come to remove the body before it began stinking was because Cirus hadn’t stopped crying. Finally a crew of people showed up to remove the body and kick him out as well, he couldn’t pay rent or work so there was no reason to keep him around. With nowhere to go Cirus had turned to the only other person who he could trust. He’d run to Dena as soon as he’d been able to realize that he had to find someone who could help him. There was no one else he had to turn too now, and he just hoped she’d be able to look after him for a few days, just long enough for him to find some work somewhere.

“Shhh, Cirus it will be ok. You’re still here and children younger than you have made it through losing a family member.”

“But what can I do.”

His voice was muffled as he cried into Dena’s shoulder; he’d always known this could happen. People on Nar Shaddaa didn’t care if the whore they indented to rob was someone’s mother. The people here didn’t care about anything but themselves, and they didn’t care who suffered as a result of their actions. Dena was trying her best to comfort him, but it was hard for a child of eight to understand that people would pass on in his life. Cirus had only two people that were important to him and one had died. He’d heard some of his mothers customers brag about how they had been young when they had entered ‘the business’ as they called it. His mother had always tried to warn him away from becoming one of them, but if he didn’t then how would he survive here? He would never be able to save enough to get a ticket off this garbage pit but he could make enough to survive.

“Who’s the kid Dena?”

The voice asking was deep and rough, not unlike the voices he’d heard local thugs and enforcers use when threatening people, his voice scared Cirus a little. He didn’t want to turn away, and clutched all the tighter to Dena who in turn placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. Even though she was trying to comfort him Cirus could feel a shiver run through her, whoever this person was she obviously didn’t feel that much more comfortable around him than Cirus did.

“He’s Lemiara’s son Jaron.”

“Ain’t she dead?”

The cold words brought more tears to Cirus face, but he didn’t let them flow. He wouldn’t show them in front of this man, this Jaron. His mother had always told him he would need to be strong someday when she left. No, he wouldn’t show fear in front of this man. He let go of Dena and turned to face the man.

“She is, what of it?”

Cirus voice sounded far calmer in his head than it had coming out of his mouth, none the less this Jaron seemed to be surprised that he’d spoken out at all. The man looked a lot like the customers who’d come to see his mother, though Cirus didn’t recognize him as one of her regular customers. He also seemed to carry himself different than most of the others Cirus had seen, he carried himself with some sort of importance, as if he had something to be proud of that no one else could claim.

“The child speaks? Well then young one, what will you do now that your mother is gone?”

Cirus honestly wasn’t sure; his mother had always provided for him and had tried her hardest to make sure that her son didn’t have to worry about doing any extra work. Now that she was gone Cirus really had no plans for what he could do. If he was lucky he might be able to get enough to eat as a beggar but that wouldn’t last him forever, sooner or later he would have to find a way to make a real living.

“I don’t know, but I’ll figure something out.”

The stranger grinned; he had a strange look in his eye, as if sizing up a new dog. Cirus tried his hardest not to flinch as Jarons’ eyes looked over him. The smile grew wider after a minute, and apparently Dena saw the same thing because she put a protective arm around him trying to draw him closer. Cirus shook her off; he wouldn’t let this stranger see him hide behind anyone.

“Well then lad, how about you come to work for me?”

It was a tempting offer, work meant credits and credits meant food. Not to mention a chance to get off this rock if he could learn to be frugal. It could also mean that Cirus would end up like some of the young boys he’d seen without mothers. His mother had always told him to stay away from the boys like that, and it was something that just didn’t sit right with him. Dark alleys always meant danger on Nar Shaddaa.

“What kind of work?”

“The simple kind, running messages and numbers”

Criminal work, but it was simple work and it would pay enough to feed him. Who knows it might even be a chance to start a rise of his own, if he was lucky and good at what he did he might even get a chance to work for the people who ran Nar Shaddaa. It was the only thing that he could hope for, and it was all that he really had.

“I’ll take it.”

Cirus thought he heard Dena gasp, or maybe it was a held back sob. He didn't know or care, there was nothing she could do now. Cirus had agreed to take the position and deals were one of the few sacred things on Nar Shaddaa, and you didn't go back on one when you were dealing with someone who could kill you, and Jaron could very easily kill Cirus.
