![]() Echoes from the past|Melanie Delon ‘Will you take tea? I advise you to take tea. It is inadvisable not to at least have one cup -- the bergamot is truly divine.’ Name: Ashemmi Estella Grey Homeworld: Telos IV Nickname/Alias: 'The Black Madonna' (among her dissenters) Date of Birth: 36 ABY Faction: Rank: Senator of Telos IV Species: Human Height: 5’6 Weight: 132lb Hair Color: Blonde Skin Color: Very Fair Appearance: Ashemmi has the appearance of a beautiful, fine-china doll. She is lissom and willowy, her body of such fine proportions she appeals to the fragile female quality that would so easily submit to a strong, masculine hand. She is slim and graceful, her stature petite and her measurements one of a slender and nubile young woman. Though the turns and subtle cambers do not compare to the more obvious examples of her sex, she harkens back to the gentle grace and elegant delicacy that is the compliment to the sheer strength and stature possessed by men. She has long, lithe legs and small feet, slender hips and a narrower waist. She claims no breadth of shoulders, but does exhibit the classic, female lines curving up her neck and curling around the bend of her collarbone. She has the delicate fingers of an artist or a musician – dextrous, soft and elegant long fingers – with smooth, supple palms, and a soft, featherlike touch. Her skin is perhaps one of her most marked features. Her complexion is a pale pearl hue, very fair, with subtle rose tones during a flush or a fever, and whose porcelain translucence is quick to show a dark bruise upon slight abuse or application of violence. Ashemmi’s face belies its age and the personality of its wearer. The features are smooth and doll-like, as if carved from porcelain, with and exquisitely ethereal aesthetic to the features. She has large, almond shape eyes with irises that are a startling ice blue that cannot be contained by the long, blonde lashes that fringe their lids. Ashemmi has a gaze that fluctuates between the displaying the chilling gaze inherent in the colour of her eyes, and an innocent and doe-like quality, speaking of youth and an almost fearful bewilderment, one often found in children. She has high cheekbones, ones that would provoke envy in the longest lines of aristocracy, but otherwise her bone structure contributes to smooth, muted lines – a small nose and soft chin. She has thin, pale rose lips, often held in a gently demure smile, slightly parted, with a thin veil of perfect civility. The face of Ashemmi is one that is often found sculpted by artisans, appraised for its symmetry and classic attributes, as well as intriguing for its mask of vague misunderstanding and awe of the world. The blemish on Ashemmi’s cheek is immediately obvious. This spidery scar remains from a burn inflicted from her first husband, that the porcelain skin could never quite clear. It is a mark that creates the constant reminder of Ashemmi’s fragility, and recalls a violence by which she immediately remains a victim, when the world failed to provide the resources to defend her and her delicacy. Such, is how she uses it. Personality: Ashemmi Estella Grey is a shrewd woman, one whose delicate and frail appearance belies a mind couched in resilience and mental and psychological fortitude. To her acquaintances, she is soft-spoken, well-mannered and gently demanding, and generally is well-liked and esteemed. To her peers, both intimate and professional, she does not share any immense or immediate friendships, but rather is begrudged a large volume of healthy respect and deference. Ashemmi is cunning, conniving and duplicitous, whose aptitude in psychological manipulation of her allies and mental castration of her enemies is callous and amoral, and performed without hesitation when necessary, and sometimes even where it is not. Her colleagues call her the ‘Ice Bitch’ behind her back, and her household coined the traditional moniker of ‘Black Widow’. The first acknowledges the brittle and cold reception Ashemmi gives to those she works with, as she is particularly intolerant of ineptitude, recalcitrance or tardiness, and grants no respect to age, rank or creed if the individual works below her. The second title is uttered, very occasionally and nervously, behind the closed doors of Ashemmi’s household – referring to personal affairs and conducts of her private life, especially due to her suitors. Despite being married twice, widowed twice, and lost two fiancés (one to an accident, another irreconcilable differences that terminated the engagement prior to its marital consummation, and his unfortunate passing soon after) and only being the tender age of 27, Ashemmi is frequently courted and frequently entertains male suitors and conducts illicit liaisons. Partly due to her upbringing, half due to her failings in physical capabilities, Ashemmi is prone to keep one or two men romantically to fulfil her shortcomings, in particularly favouring men of stature or men of violence. Violence, in particular, is an important tenet in Ashemmi’s psychological repertoire. Although not publically displayed or acknowledged, the woman has a particular proclivity to violence and acts of cruelty, which is very rarely expressed to anyone besides those unfortunate enough to suffer it. This facet of her personality manifests mostly in her political creed, which is aggressive and narrow-minded, and frequently calls for action and degrades cautious policies. Though Ashemmi is not a senator who openly declares herself against the Federation, she is known to be particular outspoken against their actions, criticising their work under the guise of frequently claiming Telos IV has been overlooked or undercut. Like the woman herself, whose delicate appearance lends itself so easily towards victimisation, Ashemmi promotes Telos IV as being frequently abused by Sith and Jedi alike, whilst the Federation enacted no punishment for those who took advantage of the planet and its resources. As a result her critical stance is often veiled under the pretence she is acting for the rights of a planet whose past involved frequent exploitation, and whose future she will safeguard at any cost. She is not well liked amongst her peers as a result and, though she enjoys vast popularity on her home planet, her outspoken expositions have engendered the ill will of many, and frequent assassination attempts. The latter of these, however, provides frequent fodder for her spin tactics, smear campaigns and fear-based politics. Unbeknownst to others, Ashemmi Grey believes ultimately in the tenets and philosophies of the Sith. However, due to advantages and boons of her senatorial position, she is not inclined to practise these allegiances openly, or acknowledge a possible alliance. The current state and weaknesses of the Sith, combined with the strengths of her own profession and household, means she is cautious enough not to weigh in on the factional affairs of the Sith, at least not until it presents more obvious advantages to her. Her own attitudes that particular loathe weakness, as well as her natural inclination to exploit debt of any nature, also presents issues in Ashemmi finding individuals for treatise. Weaknesses and Strengths: Popularity Rating – A deterrent to her enemies and dissenters is the fact that Ashemmi is very well liked and adored by the general population of Telos IV. Particularly merchants and businessmen, whose patronage provides vast financial support and donations, those who criticise Ashemmi find themselves incurring the sometimes fanatic wrath of her supporters. ‘Anything you need me to be...’ – Ashemmi is a cunning and well-versed manipulator. From playing the victim, to seducing advantageous suitors to simply turning one against another, Ashemmi has learned and revelled in the ability to mould and bend the minds of others to her own ends. Obnoxious Wealth – Ashemmi’s first husband in particular, as well as several other romantic liaisons, have been incredibly wealthy. Since her political career began, and her popularity has soared, she has also accumulated more assets and properties to her fortune. Porcelain Doll – Ashemmi is a finely built woman who lacks strength. She is frail and easy to dominate using physical force. Her skin is easily bruised, her bones susceptible to fractures, and her musculature below average. Dark Secret – Ashemmi’s allegiance to the Sith, however unannounced, presents political suicide if it were to come to light. Ashemmi must therefore devote a large portion of time and effort to conceal her sympathies. Assassination Target – Ashemmi ‘s policies and outspoken criticisms of the Federation have come at a cost. Several other senators have made it their business, by providing lucrative financial incentives, to have her permanently removed. Equipment - Muff Pistol (Hold-Out Blaster) - Smart Comm Force Powers - Force Cloak (Moderate) - Force Concealment (Moderate) - Force Seeing (Weak) - Farseeing (Weak) - Telepathy (Weak) - Force Fear (Weak) History: Pedigree and Childhood Ashemmi Estella Grey was the younger child of Marcus James Grey and Evelyn Alice Grey (Maiden: Naxes). Her mother Evelyn had been the middle child of six children of the former senator of Telos IV, who had married an executive of a small communications manufacturer, and unfortunate match necessitated by the age of Evelyn, still a maid and unmarried at 32. Unlike her other three sisters and two brothers who had married early and fortuitously, Evelyn had been a ungainly and weak-willed child who had neither advantageous attributes of her stern and stoic father, nor the beautiful matriarch of her mother. For a decade she had been passed over whilst her siblings were matched and married, confirming the fears of her mother who worried they would be burdened with the aging child for their retirement. Such, as Evelyn approached her mid-thirties, without merit to recommend her, her mother, Estella Naxes, organised a swift marriage with a generous dowry, and shipped her off Telos IV to Coruscant and her new husband, Marcus Grey. The experience and abandonment left Evelyn with an inferiority complex and a bad case of nerves, which her family did well to conceal from the public, mostly through distancing her from Telos. Evelyn bore Marcus the son he wanted, a thick-build boy with a broad shoulders and flat face, which reassured her husband he would have a child to complete his succession. Marcus kept the child away from his sometimes hysterical and very needy wife, but eventually relented to her pleas of a second child four years later. Evelyn finally got her wish, which rescued her husband from her attentions – a daughter she named Ashemmi Estella Grey. Ashemmi bore the fine features and delicate visage of her beautiful grandmother, and was not at all like her mother Evelyn, being a calm and patient child with a predilection towards control and organisation. Evelyn doted incessantly on Ashemmi, much to her daughter’s annoyance. Though Marcus had once insisted on a nanny to take care of their daughter, he eventually let Evelyn orchestrate her upbringing, as it largely rescued him from Evelyn’s fits. Evelyn had Ashemmi privately educated from her formative years, bringing in private tutors for music, art and etiquette, to finish her daughter’s aptitudes. She bought her expensive clothes and dressed her like a personal doll, and lived vicariously through the accomplishments of her child. Ashemmi loathed her mother, quickly learning how to manipulate her affections to secure financial and social favours, and used her tutors to permit her to escape Evelyn for short periods of time. Unfortunately, as a result of Evelyn’s experiences as a child and woman, she projected her own fears for Ashemmi’s marital future on her daughter, and sought to quickly secure Ashemmi a husband for her sixteenth birthday. First Marriage The man she betrothed her daughter to was a count twice her age from Serenno named Jackob Karmin. The Count was a particularly cruel and impatient man, who expected his wife to be beautiful as an accessory, not as an individual. Particularly impressed by the unspoiled youth of a doll-like Ashemmi, he married her quickly and brought her back to Serenno. Ashemmi had waited sixteen years to be rid of her mother’s presence and, largely due to her education as well as the restrictiveness of her maternal relation, was keen to explore the world, her own identity and the boundaries of the loveless, business-like relationship her mother had sold her into. Though not particularly rebellious for a girl her age, the count was not impressed by the individuality and impulsiveness of the wife he had wished to merely compliment his arm, and he admonished her very soon into the marriage. Ashemmi was not yet ready to escape one silver cage and swap it for a gilded one, and instead attempted to manipulate her husband to achieve her own ends and exercise new freedoms. The ploy was ill-received her husband, who warned his wife against the method of seduction by a night of violent persuasion which culminated in Jackob administering a slow burn from a blaster to her face – which would never quite heal its visible scar. For a while it seemed as though the act of violence had tempered the tongue and quelled the individuality of the Count’s young wife. Ashemmi became quiet and withdrawn, subservient in temperament and submissive in will – or at least for outward appearances. However, though the Count believed that his wife was merely internalising her pain, trauma and fear, the girl was rather concealing more angry and malevolent intentions. When Ashemmi turned eighteen, Jackob became more concerned with producing offspring to ensure his line of succession, and informed Ashemmi of her duties as a wife for motherhood. Unable to refuse him, but capable of ensuring against conception, Jackob became frustrated and consulted with medical professionals to assist with problems of conceiving a child. Unaware of his docile wife’s interventions, he resorted to more cocktails and stranger combinations of drugs and poultices, and never noticed an additional ‘medication’ one night. His death with officially attributed to unforeseen complications and drug interactions, and Ashemmi was finally, for the first time in eighteen years, freed from marital burdens, though not for long. First Fiancé Ashemmi had procured the poison for her late husband from a pharmaceutical chemist and doctor who had attended her and the Duke on Serenno named. Now widowed and the beneficiary of much of the Count’s fortune this chemist, Karlos Rarik, threatened to expose her actions lest she betrothed herself to him. Frightened and alone, and loathed to return to Coruscant and her hated mother, Ashemmi panicked and agreed to the threat. The engagement was a disaster, clouded in suspicion and ill-received by other members of the late Count’s family and acquaintance. Though Karlos was ultimately unaware of the social and political turmoil his impulsive actions had thrust upon them, Ashemmi was far more attuned to the whisperings and rumours. Of course, she realised, if she was able to remove one husband from the picture – how hard could it be to do away with a fiancé who nobody was fond of? Utilising her inherited fortune Ashemmi attempted to contract an assassin to remove Karlos before he destroyed her. Truth be told, her attempts were clumsy. She was young and ill-experienced, her talents lying in a social sphere beyond mercenary contracts. However, one man received her communiqué and thought to indulge her. Maon Haefstagg was a former sith and assassin who had been largely operating as independent for the last decade. He met Ashemmi on Serenno and, impressed by something he saw, he agreed to take on her contract and, more importantly, informed her she was qualified to be trained in the force. He offere her, for reasons he never divulged, to take her as an apprentice and train her. Through the force, and the dark side, he promised she would finally have the control over her life that she craved. She agreed. Karlos Rarik was found dead the next day. Second Fiancé and Return to Telos IV Maon was instrumental in persuading Ashemmi to return not to her mother, but the grandparents on Telos IV she bore more resemblance to than her parents. His assured her they would not only accept her and offer her refuge, but would help control the finances from her first marriage. She agreed and returned to Telos IV, Maon posing as her body guard, and was gladly received by her grandparents, who refused Evelyn access to her daughter. For the next four years Ashemmi enjoyed the freedom she had sought for so long. Her grandparents paid to continue her education, permitting her to study finance, rhetoric and politics, and meanwhile Maon trained her as promised. She was a difficult student, recalcitrant, violent and stubborn, but showed great promise. Ashemmi found solace in the Sith tenets, and was constantly reminded by her master that she needed to conceal her training and the effect it was having on her body and mind, less they were discovered. For three years they managed to conceal their allegiances and training. One day, a month before her 23nd birthday, Ashemmi was withdrawn from a lesson and brought before her grandparents. Here they informed her that reliable sources had informed them that Maon Haefstagg was a sith assassin, and that he had been corrupting their granddaughter. Telos IV had contracted several Jedi to collaborate in his capture with local military, but they had decided to come to Ashemmi first, and to hear her confess her innocence or explain her involvement – she was the daughter of the senator of Telos IV, after all. Maon was doomed. Ashemmi was in limbo. Falling to her knees and weeping she explained that she had fallen in love with Maon, and he had promised himself to her in a secret engagement. She had never been aware of his Sith allegiance, but confessed she did not know whether he had corrupted her mind with the insidiousness of the dark side. Her grandparents, so eager to see her saved and desperate not to know her guilt, believed her. Fortunately for Ashemmi Estella Grey, Maon Haefstagg was slain during his attempted arrest. Second Marriage and Rise to Power William Naxes, Ashemmi’s grandfather and Telos IV Senator, was keen to avoid a scandal following the exposure of a Sith in his household. He retired and, to remove his daughter from suspicion, announced her engagement to his successor when he delivered his resignation. Although loathed to be placed in the care of yet another man, Ashemmi also recognised the necessity to avoid attention in the wake of Maon’s death. Reluctantly, feigning happiness, Ashemmi wed Senator Daniel Lucifaris on her 23nd birthday. She found her second husband to be kind and gentle man in both his marriage and his politics, who was easily controlled by his advisors and dominated by other senators. Although her grandfather had been a popular man, and his popularity had been partly passed to Daniel by their marriage, she found her husband’s approval rating and satisfaction with the people to be quickly diminishing. Opposition and competitors soon began to campaign to hasten his decline in the eyes of the populace. It was at that moment that Ashemmi acted. She had been controlled and pushed between men for the entirety of her life, and she was determined not to fall from grace again simply because her husband lacked spine. Something in her mind simply snapped, and she took control of Daniel. It was not hard to mould his mind to her whims, he was not the strongest individual to start with and he so truly loved the beautiful woman he had been gifted. Ashemmi, schooled in politics, versed in male aggression and coldly calculating, began controlling the political atmosphere of Telos IV through her puppet husband. The people of Telos suddenly became aware of their own sense of entitlement. Suddenly there was a senator indicating to them that throughout their history that they had been exploited by numerous factions and that the Federation had never intervened nor reimbursed them for that abuse. Daniel was outspoken about Federation policies, criticising other senators or implicating them in rumours of corruption. His popularity on Telos IV soared, but he made numerous enemies elsewhere. Unsurprisingly, eight months after his political transformation by his wife, he was assassinated on his way to the Core Worlds for a meeting – his personal vessel sabotaged. Ashemmi was finally freed of her second husband. She was finally not obliged to marry another man. However, Ashemmi had tasted a life and profession she enjoyed, even vicariously through her husband. Utilising her grief and mourning status Ashemmi announced her campaign to succeed her husband. She espoused the politics she had composed for him, incorporating her own loss and victimisation. Her status as the granddaughter of William Naxes gave her the credibility, and her popularity was soon indisputed. William emerged to advise his granddaughter, and her competitors on Telos IV backed off in the face of her popularity and support that far exceeded even her late husband. Ashemmi was not simply a politician, but a cult figure. Two and half years later, Ashemmi has enjoyed large success as the Senator for Telos IV, however unpopular with the Federation. She now bides her time, waiting for the right political atmosphere to enact her own ulterior motives and allegiances, safeguarding and building her own resources. |
