Hi guys...

Found this:

http://z13.invisionfree.com/BelizeArchive/...hp?showtopic=18

From Brobst's first game. It's basically a version of Battleship, and based on treemail, I could imagine that being the next challenge.

Figured it was worth checking out! :)

Wow good find Lill!

I didn't look that far back!!

I know our tribe is a little shaken up after lastnight but hopefully we can come together and win this next one!

Anyone have a strategy?

Is there anyway we can do this strategically or is it luck picking?

Can we assume he will use the same random shapes?

Tree mail makes it sound like it'll be just like Battleship. While he may not use 5 ships, there will probably be a set order that we have to follow and a grid that we each have to keep track of hits and misses. Tons of possibilities!

Im going to look through the board to see if I can see how they did it, cause I think that link just shows the winner right? I checked on my phone so I could be wrong

Yeah in my intial glance this was the case too. I saw the end result, but not really how you play. Do we just go in turn order, and say like "B3, hit or miss?" If so, yikes, this could be kind of a long challenge!

I feel like its going to be long and luck

The only thing we can keep in mind is the shapes he uses.. and hope he uses the same shapes?

HOWEVER if we did that, it could be risky to think its the same shapes, but really he doesnt use them!

i did some research on this over breakfast, and here are a few things I found:

Statistically speaking, the squares that have the least probability of scoring a hit are in the corners of the board. Always begin your attacks in the middle of the board and stick at least a couple of ships in corners.

If you miss a ship, don't attack any square adjacent to the one where you missed. This cuts the need for random guessing in half. If you think of the board as a checkerboard and only attack on one color until you hit something, that's another way to think about it.

Stacking a smaller ship in a t shape next to a bigger shape can fool your opponent into thinking they're hitting a different ship.

Here's a good article on the subject that's not TOO mathy.

I came into this thread ready to post a 'woe is I' post on how I don't understand this and clearly need help, but now that I've seen what Cindy posted... I'm feeling much better... memories from my childhood are beginning to come back to me.. perhaps I DID play this, I just didn't remember it.

Love the tips cindy thats awesome!

I kinda think that Brobst will have already placed our shapes, but I think something great you mentioned for sure is the checkerboard example! If we keep guessing right next to each other that will do us no good :o!

I noticed in the examples brobst put, one of his boards had TWO of the four corners used. The other one only had 1 of the four corners. It almost seems like if he follows the same design, that we could actually do good by going around the corners. however it could be suicide if he does different shapes/ different placements!
