Your sleep is blessedly dreamless. There are no more horrors to haunt your dreaming hours, no anxieties make themselves known, for already do you feel them all keenly. Tomorrow you will go into battle against the greatest enemy the world has known since the Witch-King and in so doing, you will revive the Kalasan bloodline, your false ancestor Euronymous the first Kalasan must surely be smiling upon you. Tomorrow you slay the Orc Warlord Drudge and spare your husband and father and their wives and children from the coin toss of fate known as war. Tomorrow you spare the world from an annihilation unknown to the people of Rul and all it will cost you is one more day of battle. Drudge's war, began twelve years ago will finally come to an end. Tomorrow.
You wake early, rejuvenated like no other sleep before it has ever done. The castle sleeps still but for one resident; Cold of Winter's Night, your once Morrigan turned staunch ally in the courtyard cleaning off the Troglodyte graffiti from the sides of the Storm King's chariot.

I clear my throat to make my presence known before striding over and moving to aid her in her task.

Winter looks at you with a smile, "seemed we should be at our best. Imagine if the story mentioned the graffiti."

I laugh "Might make it seem too real." I look up from our cleaning and catch her eyes - no longer solid silver with the cracks and crackles of lighting that arc through them. Still, that thought alone reminds me of her brother and I bite my lip, returning to the task.

"I know, Morna." Winter sighs, "the silver would remind you of Autumn. You were far more comfortable around Kayrodil's changelings. Alas that all those in the west have silver eyes like his."

I sigh "And yours- It's easier with the lightning in them and you..." I trail off, focusing on a particularly stubborn bit of graffiti "You are a friend, and it is not your fault that the family resemblance is strong." I look back up at her with a smile I don't feel, trying to play it off with humour "To tell you the truth though... I have more trouble with Peter. He's like... a mortal twin."

Winter ponders for a long moment, "I'm not sure I see it. Autumn... well, I have a lot more memories of him as he used to be, but if you say there is a resemblance then I suppose there must be."

I shrug "It doesn't really matter, Peter isn't him and neither are you. I know that." I take in a breath "I know it... and I know that in the long life you've lived you must have so many memories of a good brother." Grimacing, I return to scrubbing at the graffiti "And perhaps if I'd known him as Autumn... Well, maybe the resemblances wouldn't bother me so much."

Winter nods, "I know one fact that may show you how different he was, before and after. He didn't used to have to rhyme." She raises her eyebrows and nods as she takes in your response, "when he turned from Diabolus, that was the devil's curse on him."

"So he was punished by both sides..." I sigh "I can understand your anger at the Fae."

Winter nods, "and a bit of anger at Autumn too. He picked the wrong side for both halves. Had he stayed with Diabolus, he would be in the Hells, purging the souls of evil mortals. Had he stayed with the Fae... who knows, I guess. But I suspect both times would've spared you much pain."

I sigh again "It is... difficult, I think, to avoid the what ifs. If he had just asked instead of his... fucked up plan, I might have gone with him. I didn't... I didn't know how loved I was, then." I sigh "Or if I were cleverer... maybe I could have spared both of us." I look back up from the graffiti. "But the what-ifs are... useless. They just - They're just a tool we torture ourselves with." Another sigh and I force myself to continue looking at her "As for the pain... A scar on my shoulder, an inability to sleep alone and... anything more than the vaguest of conversation about it tends to give me trouble breathing." I shrug "Good things came out of it, too. If he hadn't-" I cut myself off "If those things hadn't happened I might not have learned the sword. Spent less time with my now Husband. Who knows if we'd be married now. I wouldn't have met you. Wouldn't have Faethe - she wouldn't even exist." I laugh "Maybe someone else would be saving the world. Giselle on her own. Instead, there are four incarnates, that's some good."

Winter nods, "you are right, we have only our current path to examine. Staring back at the knife's edge of life does nothing but add to our torment." She sighs, "sometimes I miss my brother though. 'Why did he do this?' 'Why did he do that?'" She makes a thoughtful sound, "but today is a day for the present. The future and the past can be thought of after."

I nod also, returning once more to the graffiti "It is." I stare at my reflection in a now freshly polished part of the chariot "We'll do it. We'll win, and we'll continue learning what the fallout of our decisions will be for years to come." As I speak, I come to another, final decision. "Though... I think there is one more thing I need to do before we face Drudge." Before she can inquire, I speak. "Amaeleanadannan, I release you from all commands I have made."

Winter looks shocked at the use of her true name, but it fades into a smile. "Thank you, Morna. Now if you'll do one little extra favour for me and forget that name entirely, I would greatly appreciate it."
