Alright, so I've got to know: What's your guys' take on the whole thing. And I'm not asking you're opinion on Geohot necessarily (although you may definitely share that); I'm more asking on the issue itself... and what it would mean if the case were won/lost (either side). Personally, I'm rooting for the Hacker. I think people have the right to both mess with their own stuff and show and tell afterwards. But even if Sony wins this, do they really think that will stop people? I think hackers will just get trickier and more anonymous. I also think that homebrew is a natural evolution of the gaming scene. I just don't get why companies refuse to evolve with it and instead fight the inevitable. On a semi-related note, I really don't understand why Sony doesn't allow PSN "Store" access on any other firmware than their current "most limited" version. I mean, I would actually buy games on there. But Sony is just too good for my money. But hey, if it's going to be that way, I'll stick with my current options for now (I can't afford games requiring the latest firmware anyways). |

Sony is being a total dickhole about this. The company is trying to cram the genie back in the bottle after years of courting the open source crowd with Other OS. They have a nasty habit of playing both sides of the field... you know, offering backward compatibility when it helps move units, then throwing it out to cut costs while pretending that nobody ever wanted that feature. They've got a knack for revisionist history that really gets under my skin. But yeah, getting back to the topic... Sony can't seal the security holes in their system with lawsuits. They're dreaming if they think they can. The viral nature of the internet means that once the hacks are released, they'll be distributed somewhere, somehow, for the rest of eternity, and there's absolutely nothing they can do to prevent that. I personally don't think piracy is that great a threat to the PS3 anyway... Blu-Ray burners don't come cheap, and neither do the discs. |

Actually, piracy is kind of a problem (but only just). You actually don't need a burner or extra discs to pirate the games. All can be done by just downloading them to a computer or external hard drive and then FTP it to the PS3 (or even play from external). I really don't think there are too many who do this though. I mean, a lot of games are in the 20-40GB range and I can think of better uses for the space, especially for games that I'll probably only play through once. Also, I can imagine that the downloads would take ages. But I have a few games (that I actually own) than I copied to my hard drive. Technically, I could buy games, copy them, and then sell em, but that's just not my way. I just like to limit my disc swapping and preserve the Bluray laser a bit. But I may be guilty in one area. You see, I like my fighters and right now, the PS3 is tied with the PS2 for sheer variety in the genre. I've got several games running on emulators for the PS3. And Sony has just started porting Neo Geo games (how many years after the Wii was doing it?). Well, as much as I'd love to support this, they're just giving me what I already have on PS2/PSP releases (and for more $ per game I might add). I really don't think they will ever get to the games that I can't play yet on a console. They should be making up for lost time, pumping out games like crazy. But maybe it's SNK\Playmore fault? In any case, it's too little too late. And technically, there are still tricks to get on PSN with CFW, but Sony has effectively scared me off for now. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/16/official-statement-regarding-ps3-circumvention-devices-and-pirated-software/ I actually don't think they have banned any accounts yet, but I just won't risk losing what I've already paid for (as I plan to get another PS3 in the future for dedicated PSN use). |
