So I was wondering what's allowed nowadays on sites like youtube and similar user-video sites.
You see, I used to go to youtube specifically to look up fan-made music videos. It was one of my favorite uses for the site.
I just went there with that very intention and was greatly saddened to find that a couple had the audio tracks completely removed for supposed copyright violation.

Alright, I know this is old news and I might even be opening up old wounds. It's also weird that I'd be bringing this up on such an obscure forum (which still rocks, but is admittedly dormant ATM).

...BUT, I needed to rant somewhere of little consequence and possibly have some input where I trusted or valued opinions more.

So here's my stance. Pop culture (to me) is public domain in a Pop culture setting. Hearing a song on youtube is really no different that hearing it on the radio.
And again, user made videos put to music was (and still is as long as the videos aren't flagged) a major draw to video sites like that in the 1st place. I really see no wrong in taking 2 things you are a fan of and fusing them together into a unique take on both of them. In fact, it often creates more demand for either or both subjects, so I don't see why intellectual rights and other powers that be have any fears from the practice.

Thing is, I've been wanting to do some videos of my own lately, just for fun. But if there's a good chance that they'd be removed in any form, I really don't have much of an incentive to make them (the ideas will just stay in my head).

I know you can put at least some music to vids, but I really don't know how limited that selection is and if you can even sync it the way you had in mind.

Also, I've seen other videos that would probably be removed if flagged or something, yet they've stayed on youtube all these years anyways. Are they just not popular enough to notice, or are they selectively prejudiced to certain things.

And should I just move onto another video site (I'm open to recommendations).

Some of these are just my own musings and I don't expect a response to everything. But I'd like input on the matter if everyone isn't burnt out on the issue.

Meanwhile I'll be looking up past topics, if any, about it (yes, I realize I should have done this the other way around).

I believe part if it might have to with if the copyright holders are sponsors (or partners) of youtube. If they are I assume youtube pulls them as soon as it's noticed, and regardless of whether it's public domain or not since it's their site they can pull what they want. Not saying I agree with it but that's how things are done these days.
