Would be nice to see some activity... hhmmm....?? What's everyone doing?! Venetica is done and was very insteresting up to the ending which was a little silly, but it's about the journey, right? That's what I'm told. Half-Minute Hero was pretty cool. Gonna have to play it again in the retro graphics. Seems strange playing a game with graphics for a screen on the PSP on my 45" widescreen TV. Just finished Bastion. Great storytelling. Good gameplay. Even New Game+ was fun since you can blow through the whole game in about three hours with your ubercharacter. Just re-realized why I stopped playing Raiden IV. I'm out of practice and stink. Shot down fifteen times by stage four. Oh, and flying two ships simultaneously? HA! No. Been putting a HUGE amount of time in an old game called Earth Defense Force 2017. Get this game. Now. Everyone who has seen it wants to play it. Even my wife. On the PC side I got Dungeons of Dredmor. Like NetHack? It's like a Super Nintendo version of NetHack but still every bit as brutal. I've died dozens of times and still only got 70% of the game complete. Woof, but it's funny stuff. Haven't seen this much *good* humor in a game in a loooonnngggg time. |

I think Raiden III has a 2 ship-1 controller mode too. Yeah, I don't see that happening. I remember a youtube vid of Ikaruga double handed. Not sure if it was real, but looked impressive enough.
That game is 5 tons of awesome!!! I played through some of it with my Bro-in-law. Definitely a blast for co-op. Kind of makes me wish I had a 360. Blasting giant alien ants (among other things) carrying a both a rocket launcher and machine gun was never so much fun (can't remember the weapon selection exactly, so I used the generic names). I may get Dungeons of Dredmor ... eventually. But I really don't play on the PC very often and I have like a million other games to play on PC alone that I haven't gotten to. This is pretty far down the list. I've been playing: *Megaman X/X4 *Random NES games on my DS (rewind/ff shoulder buttons give new meaning to hard action games). *Game Gear Games (Mega Man, Shinobi, Prince of Persia, Streets of Rage) I've been trying to fix up a group of Game Gears that I acquired recently. Mostly I'm just doing the capacitor replacements. But I also learned how to replace the back-light with LEDs (similar to Jess's Lynx mod). The LEDs work well enough, but there's always bright spots on the screen sides (even if I sand them or reuse the florescent tube). Also, the colors get washed out some (like Jess's mod) But I figure it's a trade off for extended battery life. I wonder how long the florescent lights last anyways?. I'm only doing that to some of them though, as the screen looks best how it is. Too bad not all the Game Gears I have are fixable. I replaced the caps on a couple... just to find that the screen really IS screwed up (whole sections of the screen missing ).But most of them have hope I think. Also tried modding a couple game boys (GBP, GBA) for light. So far, I have been unsuccessful (ended up with damaged screens). I think front-lighting is the way to go with any system that doesn't have a light. I just don't know how to accomplish it, I think I need a specialized plastic screen (for light dispersal) like the 1st GBA-SP had. |

I saw that video and watched the whole thing. It had a little video inset at the bottom of the guy's hands controlling both ships. Crazy!
We love the wide open stages where we can rain down dozens of thousands of damage per hit grenades or the C70 bomb that can be laid out and decimate a half-mile of real estate with explosions that cover a city block. Some of the really powerful weapons can hit enemies so hard that they fly off the screen and out of visual range of a zoomed in sniper rifle. Great fun. Haven't played any Megaman X games in a while and it might be about time to play through them again. X4 is prolly my favorite of the bunch even though X3 has some wicked power ups. X4 as X is fun but X4 as Zero is so freakin' awesome. I think I played X4 as Zero through like a dozen times. On your light mods.. have you tried putting a small piece of tape like electrical, masking or duct around the end or a small spot to redirect the light or cause it to shine in a different direction? I know that the small systems can take the light in the screen and "rub" it around the glass. Just an idea. |

It's so surreal too. You see the swarms coming and start firing your heavy artillery causing explosions that get closer and closer, until the remaining horde gets to you and all hell breaks loose. Sending enemies flying is good fun as well (as you said). I've had laughing fits from doing that (combination of late night and gaming often does this to me). I only got to the flying robots before I had to go. My bro-in-law lives further away now, so I don't get to play it anymore. But he always said it was the best game that no one knows about. There's an Earth Defense Force for the PS2 as well (Global Defense Force). It's an import though. I put the PAL version on my PS2 HDD (after doing a region format fix). It's obviously not as detailed or polished, but has the same basic gameplay (as far as I can tell, only sampled it so far). Mega Man X and X4 are my faves of the series! I really need to play through X2, X3, and X6 though. I was playing the X collection on PS2 and I still gravitated to the 2 that I know and like the best (even though I still have the originals of those 2). As for the light mods, I had tape on the florescent tube pretty close to where the LEDs are. But I'm not 100% sure of it's placement. I may try taping the LEDs themselves on one side (after frosting them). That may make a slight difference, but I think a bright spot is inevitable as I've seen similar results of other modders. Not sure what you mean by "rub it around the glass"??? You mean rub the tape residue on the glass? I've given up the Game Boy mods for now. I'm trying to concentrate on my Game Gears. |

"Rub" around the glass... couldn't really place at the time what I was trying to say. Those older screens on handhelds take the light and it spreads through the glass and evenly tries to light the face so I don't know if causing a larger amount of light actually causes the faces to "overload" the amount of light they can handle. I think a lot of people forget that these handhelds go through so many "prototype" stages before we get the actual public release. I forget that a lot of times and wonder why certain things are built the way they are. There's a new EDF for Xbox 360 and PS3 that I'll be picking up very soon called Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon and is supposed to be mainly the same as the first but in a different city. First one is in mainly Tokyo and the second is supposed to take place at about the same time in Detroit. The graphics are a huge step up and there's twice as many weapons to collect. There aren't as many stages this time but now you get four different armor types to upgrade, one of which has flight capabilites. The vehicles have been revamped and are supposed to be mostly useful this time around, although it just takes practice to get good with the vehicles in the first game. |

I tried your suggestion of taping the LEDs. It actually did help The colors aren't washed out like it was and the bright spots are pretty much gone. But there's also a couple smaller (LED sized) darker spots now I still consider it an improvement. But I'm thinking that you just can't have everything. I'm up to 13+ hours on one set of batteries for my Game Gear. I'm still figuring out a few things (and waiting for shipment on a few more parts). But I'm going to be selling some of my modded GG's on the Racketboy forum. I feel like I'm in a bit over my head though. Oh and it's good to hear that the new EDF will be on PS3. Eventually, I may have to update my PS3 and give up the whole "Homebrew and having my disc games on the Hard drive" thing. There's just so many games I'll be missing out on. Of course, I'm not really playing the ones I DO have much either... I'm just a retro fool at heart. Edited by nightrnr, Aug 6 2011, 03:09 PM.

Man, I think we're the only ones left here. I'm still a bit indecisive with my LED placement in the Game Gears. I think sanding them and sticking them halfway out of the rubber holders is the way to go. Even putting them in the old tube produces a noticeable dark area. But it's still a bit of a downgrade as far as brightness/clarity compared to the stock lighting. I think my battery life tops out at 15 hours on standard Duracell Alkalines. Not too shabby. Also, I ran into one Game Gear where the florescent bulb was getting pretty dim, even after the cap replacement. I did the mod and it brought up the lighting to the acceptable level of the rest of the modded systems. People may have to resort to the LED mod eventually anyways. |

Well, if nothing else, at least using LED over flourescent makes them last a million times longer. Neither is likely to be easy to replace but at least LEDs usually last a really long time. Oh, and yeah. I think we are the only two people here. So... anything else to chat about? How about... My next-door neighbor let me borrow Dragon Age 2. Man, I can't stand it. I remember how much I was ready for DA:Origins to be done and I played about fifteen minutes of DA2 and almost had an aneurysm. He let me borrow Fallout: New Vegas and that shows some promise. I liked Fallout 3 and New Vegas is just Fallout 3 Side Story or something. |

My sister is a big fan of the 1st Dragon Age, and even she Hated Dragon Age 2. She says I should get the original. I might try to snag a copy of DA: Ultimate Edition (includes the expansion). But I have a nonexistent income right now, ...and like I said earlier, I don't even play the PS3 games that I DO have. Speaking of which, I DO have Fallout 3:GOTY. Haven't even opened it yet. I'm sure it's great, but I just don't feel like getting into it right now. (why do I buy things that I don't intend on playing for years?) Lately, I just want a few simple games and a light project or 2 to keep me busy. I don't know what I'm gonna' do once my Game Gears are all done with (should be at least a few more weeks). Ooooh, I know a possible next project. I really want a Saturn to PS2 controller adapter. This site used to sell them: http://keio.dk/converters.html They are out of stock, and not likely to make more. But it looks like they sell the chip I'd need to make my own. and it'd only be like $10 for a pair of them, plus shipping. I E-mailed them asking if it's safe to order (I at least want someone on the other end) But I haven't gotten a response yet... |

They finally got back to me (it's only been a few days)I just ordered a couple. I kind of had to order from them because they program the chip for me. They also have a download for whatever programming it needs, but I have no means of doing that part of it. You have no idea how long I've been waiting for a (an affordable) PS2 Saturn pad. ...or maybe you do, the PS2 was released in 2000, so about 11 years I guess ... ... or less as I really only started wanting one after all the Neo Geo ports came out, etc. Okay, so I've wanted one for about 7 years, sheesh. It would have been (and will be) nice for PS1 games too though, so maybe It's more like... ... I'm going to go ahead and let this go now.
That one doesn't have a Saturn port though But I have a couple USB Sega pads, so I can live without it for now. I use them pretty exclusively for PS3 gaming though. However, it'd be nice to have one or two devoted to my PC's. Somehow I accumulated more than a dozen extra Saturn pads (the good US model 2 kind). I just love that controller so much. I could also use a 6-button Genesis pad for PS2, as I've found a good tutorial for that. But I'm not sure I want to sacrifice that many buttons. Besides, I kind of want to save that to mod for a proper Neo Geo controller. (I already have a broken Neo Geo pad for that very purpose, but that's later down the road). jhfeioae9op&*^&%#$456dml3293!!! I'm all hyper from going on a run today and wrestling with a miserable youtube video. I better stop for now... |

Ah, if only NeoGeo had a hand controller I'd have probably bought one of those systems. I've never been a fan of "arcade" sticks. To big and bulky and they were supposed to be attached to a stand up arcade machine anyway.
I was just thinking this may be the longest post you've ever made!

You mean one of these: ![]() That's what I have. It's actually not too bad, kind of similar to the Neo Geo Pocket (with it's awesome thumbstick). It still pales in comparison to a good Sega pad though. Plus, that controller has as bad a history of wearing out as the N64 analog. There's a whole thread over at noe-geo.com devoted to trying to restore them to working order. I don't use arcade sticks very often either. I was just raised with a comfy controller in my hand. I will admit to enjoying MvC2 with a stick recently though. Somehow, it just added to the whole chaotic intensity.
As do I. I kind of wish I had 2 though, they have gotten a bit pricey as of late. But then, I don't mind handicapping myself when I play against friends/family.
I think everyone gave up with Jess on the site. I just tend to be more social the fewer people that are involved... ...yeah, I don't go to parties much... |

Well, in my defense, I had been doing this for fifteen years, and I think I adequately explained why the Blitz was retired. This hobby takes a lot of money and enthusiasm, and I've been running low on both for a long, long time. Honestly, I'm surprised people are still posting here. I've contemplated shutting down the forum but I guess I'll keep it around as long as people are using it. It's not like it's costing me anything! By the way, I am writing articles for 1UP now if you're interested. If you want to read new content from me, that's the place to get it. |

That's what makes it so sad I do fully understand, however. I think I said as much in a post some months ago. I'm not sure how you had the stamina to keep at it in the 1st place (but glad you did ).
I don't mind simplicity. It's all about the fun. And I care about graphics,... just in an, "I think all sprites are purdy" kind of way. I still think the original Zelda looks amazing. It's also all about the atmosphere a game has. You don't need powerhouse graphics to have a creative atmosphere. In fact, I sometimes think that early limitations produce the most clever results (I think you said as much earlier).
What, pray tell, did you just get into? What dark RPG "chasm of no return" hast befallen thee. What seductive temptress of pixels has ensnared your soul? What evil empire of statistical battles has enslaved you? What other lame and dorky analogies can destroy my post? I can't imagine spending that many hours on any series of games. Not that I need another RPG series to follow; I think I'm set for life in that respect. You just got me curious. |
