On Saturday i had the pleasure of spending the evening with Tony Knapp and a close friend of mine called Geir, older posters like PP , DW and a couple of others will remember Tony as hard man who had a successful career with Southampton and a couple more clubs before becoming the manager of Iceland and two Norwegian clubs, he's now 82 years old and sadly suffering a little with dementia, he still lives in Norway with his partner of many years. He was invited out here by my friend Geir who is a neighbour of mine and lives out here, Geir and myself spend many evenings watching and talking football. Geir was a pro playing football in Norway until an ankle injury ruined his career, after this setback he was offered the assistant mangers post under Tony Knapp which he accepted and lasted for 7 years they've remained close friends ever since and says he learnt more under Tony that you can imagine. Needless to say both men were well connected throughout Europe and were often at Bispham Abbey studying training methods, their knowledge of football is up there with the best. Geir left football and trained as a lawyer and still has a practise in Oslo, he no longer practises but holds a partnership. Thought i'd give you a bit of background on him before i state his views of LFC who as a football fan enjoys watching them play. After Saturday's game we discussed the team, he talks not as a fan but as a knowledgeable football man, not for the first time he said Liverpool's team are like a jigsaw puzzle with 4-5 pieces missing and puts the blame solely on Klopp, criticizes him for allowing the inadequacies in the team to continue and is damming on him for allowing it to continue for so long whilst he's been the manager. Surprisingly he's kind on Mingolet but that's another story. Most of his talk always comes back to Klopp, his staff, coaching methods and the clubs transfer strategy, he says he doesn't understand any of it and thinks that's where the major problem lies . When you talk individual players like Moreno, Matip to him his response is pretty much like the views of most posters, but Geir puts another take on it and puts the problem straight back on to Klopps inability to change it, says it's no use keep blaming the players, the problems lie elsewhere. He didn't say this on Saturday but months' ago he told me that he thought Klopp is an enigma, thought he had a wonderful personality was a real likeable bloke but he questions his ability as a manager , says he could of course be wrong but he holds many question marks over him and said we'll soon see. I could say much more but thought its worth telling you a few of his views. |

We have to give the boss at least 5 to 6 years though I think Dan. Maybe he is still on a learning curve. Time will tell. |

My thoughts are similar.....a lot of the issues could and should have been sorted out by Klopp.

Hi Danny - As soon as the name Tony Knapp was mentioned it triggered a memory recall and I remembered him ion red and white stripes , probably from an old A B C football card . |

It was the same for me Dicky when Geir told me about him, I've known Geir for 6-7 years, always had interesting talks with him and always thought he talked sense talking football but only found out about his football background and his association with Tony Knapp last year. I could go on for a long time with tales he's told me, one was the number of times he'd ring him up in the middle of the night to say - what do you think about such a thing, apparently this was a common occurrence, football was on his mind 24-7. Sounded a bit of a boy ! |

When I saw the name 'Tony Knapp' I immediately thought 'Leicester City' - not checked, but sounds as if I could be wrong... |

Tony Knapp began his career at Leicester, played 86 Lge games in his 5 years there, from 1955,before moving to Southampton for another 5 years. Finished his Lge career at Tranmere, 1969/70, with 36 games and 1 goal. Represented the Football League in the days of Inter-league matches with Scotland and Ireland. I recall him as having a smallish cranium, perhaps emphasized by a very short crew cut. Tony is now 81 years old. Sorry to learn that he's suffering from dementia- another victim of constant heading the ball, as a centre-half ?

You're right pp, think he came into his own at Southampton and had some success there.. The dementia and heading the ball don't know, was sad to see his condition but was also quite enlightening to be meet the lad even though his conversation was limited. Was told many stories about him by Geir, seems he was a hard task master and had a huge work ethic living football 24-7. His partner Chrissie who's a bit younger than him joined him when he was still actively managing, they still live in Norway and have no intention of returning to the UK |
