Klopp completely baffled by criticism of Liverpool star

Date published: Wednesday 31st January 2018 10:50

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits he is baffled by the criticism that captain Jordan Henderson receives.

The Reds skipper made his first start since December 22 after a hamstring injury and it was a confident return in the 3-0 win at Huddersfield.

Henderson has his critics but Klopp does not understand why the 27-year-old provokes such a negative reaction in some quarters.

“For me, it is quite difficult to talk about the obvious things,” said the Reds boss.

“Jordan Henderson is a very good footballer; he is an England international player and for us our skipper. He may (even) skipper England, I have no clue.

“How can he not be a brilliant player when he is a Liverpool player? If somebody doesn’t see his value, what can I do?

“Do you think after what I’ve said now they will see his value? I am not sure. I am happy he is back, very happy.”

Henderson’s return to the deeper-lying central midfield role allowed Emre Can, who has been Henderson’s deputy both in position and in terms of wearing the armband, more freedom.

He responded with the vital opening goal and a much-improved performance after last weekend’s FA Cup exit to West Brom.

Klopp was pleased with the reaction from the Germany international, the only midfielder to retain his place after Saturday, but has warned no-one should feel comfortable with their place in the side.

“Emre was not brilliant in the last game and played again and was really good and very important,” the Reds boss added.

“That Millie (James Milner) and Hendo are good and important players for us is not a surprise for me.

“In this system, Gini (Wijnaldum) and (Alex) Oxlade (Chamberlain) didn’t start (but are) very important players as well. A little bit of pressure is not bad.

“If you have to perform to stay on the pitch, it’s no problem. Sometimes we rotate because of physical things but usually you do it because of who looks better and who is maybe a little bit sharper.

“The boys wanted it and it helped that they had this kind of attitude, for sure.”

Klopp is anticipating a quiet transfer deadline day with a few departures as Lazar Markovic has to decide between a loan at Wolfsburg and Swansea while under-23 midfielder Ovie Ejaria is set for a temporary move to Sunderland.

What would klopp know, he's only a world renowned football coach lol.

I would love to see a face to face ,, klopp vs jb,, where jb explains his thoughts on Hendo :)

I would love to see that discussion, too. It could prove a little embarrassingly one-sided, though, for our fellow KopThis poster. I suspect that Klopp would go easy on J-B, knowing that he supports the Reds and all. On the other hand, if Klopp has actually read some of J-B's postings on our players, maybe not.

You still don't understand about Lucas, yet you are one of the biggest critics of our defensive record. So, go and compare our defensive record with Lucas playing, and the record since he left. Particularly away from home. Then report back with your conclusions.

Henderson clearly had a good outing against Huddersfield. During our unbeaten stint, it became clear we were weary of teams living off the counter against us, and we chose to shut that down, if at the expense of not actually taking the points against these 'bus parkers'. United being an excellent example, as it was exactly how they set up. Henderson was crucial in those matches, so it's not just about an easier run against Huddersfield.

Our unbeaten run, even in not winning some games, showed vast improvement above previous renditions of our team, which would have contrived to lose more of these matches previously.

But let's get back to the serious debate. Our lack of scoring. Fool of a manager. Cheap owners. The real meat of this forum.... Our league standing, the actual football, is apparently of secondary interest to many fans.

when you see the competition for 3 places in our midfield and you have a choice of a fit Hendo, or Ox, Wino , Can , Lallana or Milner , I can see why Hendo is first name in from Kloppys perspective .

I see what you did there Dickie.

Still, with Wino and Can. That is the best 3 we have to put behind Mane, Salah ad Bob.

Phil leaves a decent technical void, but it was a void that wanted to fuck off anyway. Cant think of anyone plays like Phil who was hanging around in January waiting to be bought. Can you?

Clearly, many reds fans think there was, or should have been.

Harry Kane would relish being the permanent England captain, says Tim Sherwood

Danny Murphy and Tim Sherwood discuss Gareth Southgate's decision to share the England captaincy, with Murphy claiming 'Southgate is trying too hard to be different.'

Tim Sherwood has backed Harry Kane to become the permanent England captain and believes Gareth Southgate is wrong to share the responsibility.

The England manager revealed this week that he plans to share the armband among the squad, rather than have one continuous captain, which will take the pressure off one individual.

Southgate has rotated the captaincy since Wayne Rooney's international career reached its conclusion, sharing the role among six players, but Sherwood, speaking on The Debate, feels Kane is more than ready to lead his country.

"Captains generally play the majority of the games, and you are not judged on how you perform, it is how you make others react around you," Sherwood said. "I think Harry Kane is a leader. He has always been a leader since he was a kid.

"If he is not playing particularly well, he will try and affect others around him. I think that is what captains need to be able to do.

"I am trying to see it from Gareth's point of view, and he is trying to do everything to try and take the pressure off the squad.

"But someone like Harry Kane would grow from that responsibility. There is no greater honour than captaining your country and I think Harry would relish it."

Danny Murphy shared Sherwood's views, and feels swapping the captain for each match could actually be detrimental to England.

"I think he [Southgate] is trying too hard to be different," Murphy said. "As a player, I personally liked having a captain I could confide in, pass messages to, feelings to, look up to.

"I would understand it if there wasn't an obvious candidate. We haven't got many, but Harry Kane is such a fantastic footballer, his temperament is tremendous, he is very unselfish, not just in the way he plays, but the way he conducts himself.

"The other thing is, if you swapped the captaincy about, give it Kane for a few games, then pass it on to someone else, how is that going to make Kane feel? Is he going to take on board and do the job that is needed responsibly if he knows he will only have it temporarily?"

I’m not hendo’s greatest fan. A very limited footballer imo. Looks ok when he’s given time on the ball. When pressed though it’s a completely different story. Appears to hyped up as captain, as a dm he allows too many players ghost in behind him. The chance Huddersfield had and should’ve scored was because he watched and allowed the player to run beyond him.

His best position is rm imo. He’s a good crosser if the ball and has energy to get up and down. Always gives 100%. It’s right mid or nothing for hendo.

I found it quite amusing for all those on social media ripping into can after our defeats to Swansea and West Brom saying how much we miss hendo. How many games were we unbeaten with can in the side previously ? Against city he was excellent. When he went off we fell to pieces in midfield.

Mainly been a big defender of Henderson but l can see where the frustration is coming from but l am torn because he is asked to play a position that isn't his natural or favoured one.

He should get forward more and stop just playing tick-tock passes from side to side, he has a good eye for a through ball when its on and is more than capable of shooting from range.

That in swinging ball he does to the back post from the right channel... annoys me. One in every 10 produces something decent. Glad he is back though.

Sometimes wish Milner had Henderson's legs' or Hendo had Milner's brain, or something like that....

I don't think Hendo has the body to cope with the demands of playing CM or RM anymore. Him and Lallana have over taken Sturridge in the sick note department.

Along with Ings, we have too many that miss large parts of the season.

Henderson is still not 100% recovered from injury but we lost the league because he got a 3 match ban, whether he looks good or his gait is incorrect shouldn't be an argument, what should be is do we play better with or without him? we do improve when he plays and as we saw against Spurs he left the field before the hour mark and we looked a different team,

In the summer I want us to buy a DM and also an AM to play in front of Keita. Have Gini, Ox and Emre as backups.
