Liverpool star compared to Messi after outstanding display

Date published: Monday 5th February 2018 9:57

Liverpool star Mo Salah was compared to Lionel Messi after his stunning double strike against Tottenham on Sunday.

Salah scored an opportunist opening goal in the thrilling 2-2 draw but his second was pure genius and left former Reds skipper Jamie Carragher purring on Sky Sports.

“The only (other) man who can score that goal is Messi,” said Carragher.

“If you think of Messi scoring goals, that’s what he does in the tight areas and dinks it over the goalkeeper.”

Salah has now scored 28 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions in his first season with the Reds and another former Liverpool star, Graeme Souness, also paid tribute to the Egyptian after the game.

“There is so much to admire about this: his strength, his change of direction and his low centre of gravity,” said Souness.

“If you look at Salah, he can resist a challenge. He looks to have really powerful thighs. He can change direction very quickly.”

Adding to the adulation was Reds chief Jurgen Klopp: “It was a fantastic goal, it was an outstanding goal, it was an outstanding performance.

“He was a threat the whole 90 minutes that’s true.”

His overall match performance wasn't particularly outstanding. Nor have some off his recent matches, if I am being honest. He gets 9s and 10s for his two goals. He creates many of his own chances out of nil. Where would we be without him?

He has to create his own chances with the sadly lacking midfield creativity we are now lumped with .

Coutts and Firmino were the creative players , but now we are down to just Bobby . Mane is way off the pace and so far out of sorts its sad.

Hoping he gets his mjo back to help Bobby and Mo soon as nothing much will be coming from midfield.

This what makes the Great Players, they do things other players struggle with and with a couple of flashes of brilliance the opposition suffers. It's like the criticism that apparently was levelled at Jimmy Greaves by the idiot brigade, "he does nothing but score goals" The same was said of Gerd Muller. I heard similar comments regarding the like of Rush (pre Juve) and other strikers :). However, like Shankly said, "The hardest thing to do in football is score a goal" Right Now Salah scoring as he in the Prem, is the hottest thing in world footy, even the great Suarez, out and out striker, didn't score like this for us and certainly not in his first season, added to which of course, Mo is a wide man. The FSG bean counters are creaming themselves at him continuing on like this. (I know I am) Cheers :))

Don't want to appear as a smarty smart ass, but you put your first Suarez post above in the Present tense: "Suarez scores like that" 🤔 so he does, but alas no longer for us :))

Not sure what your "goal" is with such selective editing JB, so let's regurgitate the whole statement for clarity ;) "Right Now Salah scoring as he in the Prem, is the hottest thing in world footy, even the great Suarez, out and out striker, didn't score like this for us and certainly not in his first season, added to which of course, Mo is a wide man." The evidence held therein is that I'm concerning myself primarily with quantity of goals rather than any specific type or quality of goal. Last year Emre scored the goal of the season against Watford, great goal, but it doesn't place Emre among the scoring elite, whereas Mo's goals this season do, hence comparisons are being made to Messi and no one is laughing, they are being taken seriously. :))

It IS! The positives are phenomenal and expand exponentially something like this:

Liverpool fans live in the HOPE Mo is the act that helps carry us into the Top 4, with some fans of which I am one, believing with him continuing in this form we can win the ECL this season.
Then there are the Execs junior and so on, on or around the board of FSG who know nothing about "Soccer" yet like to appear in the know with their peers: "Hey Sam what's that Limey soccer guy we own and everyone's talking about worth now?"
"Well for one he's not a Limey he's Egyptian, but I have just had lunch with JH, Chuck Wilkes one of his head beanies was present, the guy was so excited he didn't touch his lunch banging on about figures and current market projections showing asset liquidity this year at his age would result in 280 million dollars.
Meanwhile Real Madrid fans are also extremely excited and Positive that Mo's acquisition will be the difference between they and Barca this coming season.
As for Mo's family, his village back home, and his team of business advisers and his agent well they are Positively creaming themselves over what his sale will do for them all!

The positives thereby engendered by ar' Mo, are positively without parameters :))

Salah has been a revelation. If I was asked to pick between the Suarez of his time with us, and Mo, then it would be Luis. Might change that opinion if Mo keeps this form up another 12 months. Lad's been on fire in terms of his scoring rate.

Similarly, Messi has been riddling holes in defences for about 10 years it seems. Not one season.

Jung "The human psyche is often a very selective, if not preferential mechanism". Luis in his first season for us was not 'what' he became and a number of fans decried him as Not being a 20-goal-a-season performer, I remember it well, Luis' impact initially was nowhere near that of Mo's initial impact, nowhere near. Hence Mo is being compared to Messi and already and for some time there is and has been talk of Mo going next season. In my time of watching Liverpool FC nobody has ever had this type of impact in their first 6 months, nobody.

That's why you appeal to evidence JB, it has no mind, get that? And why in all cases it is so important, evidence one time could hang yer in this country JB, and for a certain crime it still can ;) The evidence states the case that no player in many decades has had the impact Mo has had in his first 6 months for the club, his goals alone are testimony to that and now we have comparisons with Messi, while rumours circulate that he's a gonna already in terms of being sold. We live in HOPE that's not true (at least some of us do) but hey ho :))

What's your beef with Mo, JB, because you said he was crap and still wish to be right??? There is that pervasive forum form of insanity attached to this :hump: so lets go again Luis in his first season for us was not 'what' he became and a number of fans decried him as Not being a 20-goal-a-season performer, I remember it well, Luis' impact initially was nowhere near that of Mo's initial impact, nowhere near. Hence Mo is being compared to Messi and already and for some time there is and has been talk of Mo going next season. In my time of watching Liverpool FC nobody has ever had this type of impact in their first 6 months, nobody. The crucial word for this exercise has to be initially?

Luis initial impact was nowhere near that of Mo's, for example Luis didn't score as many goals in his first 6 months, the very lifeblood of Footy and he (Luis) is a striker, that alone should help undo any faltering reminiscences? Chares :))

I like salah. I don't recall disliking him.

But, suarez was always a top player.

I don't understand why someone would single out a specific time period to measure against people.

If we're counting goals, yeah evidently in 'this period of time' salah excels.

The real comparison.... Is who would you have in the team.... And why.....

Could be FSG string and dick pulling in the background, preparing the faithful for another departure, as that cow is milked, that goose lays the golden egg and that money rolls royces in and in. They never had it so good. Meanwhile back at the ranch they continue to throw money at Red Sox problems.
