Virgil van Dijk issues defiant message to his Liverpool critics

Date published: Tuesday 6th February 2018 7:24

Liverpool’s club-record signing Virgil van Dijk acknowledges his price tag makes him open to criticism but insists having his every move to be scrutinised does not concern him.

The Holland international became the world’s most expensive defender a month ago after his £75million move from Southampton, but has been viewed as the answer to the Reds’ problems at the back for much longer than that.

Because manager Jurgen Klopp was prepared to wait six months to get his number one transfer target there is a huge expectation on the Dutchman to provide an instant fix.

While he has already made a difference in the four matches he has played, Van Dijk is still far from his best having missed a large part of 2017 through injury – but accepts his price tag and reputation make him a target.

“I can’t do anything about that. Obviously, there are so many eyes on me but I am just keeping my head down and playing,” said the centre-back.

“Everybody can say what they want but I am working hard every day and I am getting back to where I need to be with the help of everyone here. I am just doing my thing.

“I have been out for eight months – last January until September really – and I didn’t play at Premier League level.

“It is not easy to come back, especially when I have made such a big step as now with all the eyes on me and they look at every small detail.”

Asked if he has a message for his critics, Van Dijk simply insisted: “Other people will talk and have their opinions. There is nothing I can do about that. You are always going to be judged but it is not like it is something really strange at the moment.

“I know because I made such a big step right now, for a lot of money, everything is going to analysed.

“No-one is going to look at the good things that you do. Everybody is going to watch the bad things and that is how it is. But I will discuss it with the people who want to make me better, who can make me better, that is the manager and the players around me.

“If they think it is right that is good then that is the way forward.”

This was always going to be the case.... People thought Vvd is the silver bullet for our defensive problems.

He's a good player.... But he alone can't fix the problems.

There are deep rooted problems that include coaching, tactics.... What the gera.nium do the backroom staff do? Why do we consistently make the same schoolboy errors?

Good how he told Carra to come see him in the dressing room, after he said he was overweight.

We have lost twice in the league I believe. I think we are third in the league and still in the CL, not bad for consistently making school boy errors.

If we consistently made those errors we wouldn't be in the top 4 or CL, but sitting mid table.

We had lots of draws as well?

We're out of the domestic cups.

The distance between us and the leaders is huge.

Yes it's a big gap for our rivals too...... But we are supposedly doing great..... Whereas our rivals are all doing poorly.... Yet we're on similar positions.

I would say failure to address our obvious weaknesses has contributed to our downfall again.

This is the point I believe you are wrong about:

Why do we consistently make the same schoolboy errors?

We used to make errors on set plays, now we don't. Now we have an issue where we need better players in:

MF
GK
RCB

I would say in that priority order.

We have Klopp and his team to thank that we are again over achieving this season. We haven't spent like the coward Jose or the plastics.

Repeated failure to track players when defending set pieces

Repeated failure to clear the ball

Repeated failure to keep the back line in sync especially when dealing with counters and controlling the offside.

Repeated failure to control the ball to do something with it.

Strawman - no one says we are doing great JB just that we are on the right track. Unless you wanna see us go back to the days of Balotelli, Allen, Skrtel, Markovic and Lucas all in the same side again?!

In conventional terms no one side has a good defence in my opinion, the old, solid bedrock defenses are stuck in another era; now you attack and defend as a team.

Chelsea and Tottenham both had brilliant defenses last Season but have fallen off a bit this team especially , Conte’s lot.
Man. City have spent fortunes trying to find proper defenders with Walker , Mendy, Stones, Laporte all costing around £ 50 mil each which is a ludicrous and mythical amount to try to sort out a dodgy defense.
Mangala might be the dopiest CB to ever grace the PL , he cost them £ 42 mil before they decided he was beyond help and shipped him off loan to the desperate Fat Sam.
In my opinion the best defenders are those who consistently have good games without needing to be fantastic one game followed Shyte the next 5 in a row so that leaves Lovren out of that mix.

Azipalacueta is a proper defender as were Kompany and Alderweiweld before they got injured , Vertonghen is another one who has high consistent standards but that’s about it as far as defensive rocks on any team.

Van Djik to me anyway can easily be like them. Dominant in the air , reads the game extremely well, is a strong lad and very handy n the ball.
Right now he’s trying to really be match fit after missing so much time out injured and long draining saga of his transfer to Liverpool. Only issues I see after 4 only games are that he’s trying to adapt to Klopp,s defensive schemes , his new partners at the back ( hardly stellar any of them ) . He does appear to be a tad slow on the turn and retreating into position but I think that will get better with more game time and match fitness.

He’s a leader. Top class player and we will see that soon.

I like what I see so far. He has been unlucky with the penalty and headed assist he gave away, perhaps being a little too eager? I'm not making excuses, but its not like he messed up by missing the ball or lost his man like Lovren would do, missed headers like Matip tends to do, or turned his back, lost his player got caught out of position, missed a tackle, lunged at a player, missed a header, fell over, miskicked, gave two goals away per game.... like that other 'defender'... Moreno..
