I know this is a Liverpool forum , but I feel the need to post this thread.

Its 60 years to the day that a great bunch of footballers, and writers died in that fateful Air crash.

My Father , who brought me up the way I am regarding football would bang on about certain characters he loved, playing football - 4 in particular kept coming up.

Billy Liddell , of Course, Len Shackleton , and Duncan Edwards and Frank Swift.

Sadly 2 of those died in the plane crash Big Duncan and Frank Swift who by then was a journo , having been a top Goalkeeper.

So rivalries and bitterness aside I think it only right to remember a great team that was torn apart by fate .

I like that you posted that, Dickie. And congratulations to your Dad for raising you right.
The European Cup was in its infancy then, at least for British teams. Man. U. were the first British club to take a serious run at the cup, and it caught the imagination of the British public. I have to say that Big Duncan was one of my non-LFC favourites and I was devastated that he was amongst the victims. At the time of the crash I was serving an apprenticeship at an engineering firm along the East Lancashire Road. A lot of the workers lived in towns between the factory and Manchester, and supported United. It was quite an experience for me, at 17, to see grown men congregating in groups, crying on each others' shoulders, or standing in stunned silence at their machines, which they just left running, unable to reach out to the 'off' button. Even men that I knew to be Liverpool or Everton supporters got carried away with the emotion of the occasion.
Frank Swift was the first England goalie that I remember seeing, as I was hanging from the railings at the Paddock/Kop, my arms feeling as though they were being pulled out of their sockets. I must have been 8 or 9 at the time. He looked like a colossus to me, although he would be average GK height in today's game.

Frank Swift never played at Anfield after the War. City were in Div 2 in 46/47, and in the next two seasons Thurlow was in their goal; Swift retired in April 1949...( I saw the 48/49 match )...

Sad to see that Lingard was tweeting during the ceremony - such a lack of respect is a disgrace , unfortunately not unexpected from him. He did try and blame it on his PR team . wtf he needs to grow up . Reminiscent of the French Goalie of ours . Horrible people.

Itandje? Yeah, he got sacked (rightly so).

How difficult is it for these idiots to spend an hour or so not thinking about themselves? Fucking bell ends.

For sure I trust your encyclopaedic knowledge rather than my memory at that age. I do have a memory of seeing Swift throw the ball to a team mate. Did Swift ever play at Anfield during the war? Did he play for the reserves at any time, which would have been the Central League? Perhaps the memory was transposed from a newsreel at the time, and I was confusing the memory of another GK.

I'll try to narrow it down for you,Cam, may take a while... Doubt if Swifty ever played in the Reserves/Central League. May have played here during the War, but I thought your first visit would have been after the end of hostilities- mine was, although it was a War North match in November 1945. The match in April 1949 which I saw I think coincided with the England v Scotland match at Wembley with Swift in the England team- League matches were played on the same days as Internationals in those days as you know, regardless of the effect it had on the clubs who lost their top stars to the national teams...
Frank-ly, I think you've probably hit on the reality in your last sentence...

You are probably right in your last sentence, but I don't altogether rule out the other possibilities. Don't forget I lived next door to the ground and hung around outside during matches until the gates opened to let early leavers depart for their tram car. I learned to shinny up those Kop railings almost as soon as I learned to walk. I also have confirmed (by others) memories going back to early childhood. Many years later, in my forties, I shocked my mother with some of the memories I conjured up for her. I wish my memory was as good these days.
