Bit early for the match thread but the friendlies are boring and we need to start talking about this game. I doubt Gerrard is training (havent seen anything in the press) so he will not be playing. My team would be

Reina
Johnson Agger Skrtel Enrique
Downing Henderson Lucas Adam Bellamy
Suarez

We dont have many other options. I would have played Maxi instead of Downing but I doubt Kenny would do that. I have included Bellamy but will not be surprised to see Kuyt or Carroll in the team in his place.

Arh niceone steve back to club footy at last, huge game this, can we do them at the bridge just like we did last year? We are desperate for a big result to kick start our season concidering our stuttering league form of late, what better way to give us all a boost than turning the plastics over? Will Torres start the game for the Chavs? - this ones got all the making of a craker.

kuyt adam lucs downing
carroll suarez

im hoping kk will abandon his 442 prinicples and go 433 or 451 as i can see chelsea going 433 or 451 to out number us in midfield.lucas will be pressed back to keep tabs on lampard while chelseas other midfielders will out number and keep adam quiet , meaning suarez and carroll will be isolated up front .downing will have to be at his best to counter attack and help suarez and carroll up front .if not i can see another spurs rout as chelsea will play a high line and high tempo and press us back to our own box creating many chances and scoring goals .
kk pls abandon this rigid 442 formation and revert back to how we played last season .

Tough call this one.

I fancy a 0-0 draw.

We usually tend to raise our game against the top4 (Spurs being the exception this season) so I am hoping for an improved performance. Chelsea are slow in defence (thats how Arsenal scored 5) and therefore Bellamy needs to start. Terry and Co are good in the air and not sure Carroll will get much change from them so it would be better if he was on the bench.
The other option on the left is Aurelio instead of Downing- he will also provide a better defensive option.

what about 4-2-3-1 with Suarez coming from deep to support Andy?

yes fpc . not a bad shout . would look a good solid set up also a springboard to attack with. i jut think if we go 442 there will be picked off far too easy

I'd stick with the same back four, in midfield Adam, Lucas Kuyt and Maxi with Bellamy and Suarezl up front. Was tempted to have had Kelly in at RB and Johnson on the right of midfield instead of Kuyt but perhaps this weekend is not the right game to experiment

So is this the team you would play or the team you think Kenny would play?

Either way it seems like a pretty good lineup. Wouldn't surprise me to see Kenny put Spearing in there alongside Lucas at Stamford Bridge. We do have a lot of options.

EDIT

Reina

Johnson Agger Skrtel Enrique

Lucas Spearing

Suarez Adam Downing

Carroll

Great article on AnfieldIndex.com about Chelsea's high line. Expose it like Arsenal did and we have a great chance of beating Chelsea ( link provided below)

http://www.anfieldindex.com/4086/liverpool...a-highline.html

During the summer one of the key attributes that many fans felt the team was missing was raw pace and the ability to break forward quickly and hit teams on the counter attack. While Liverpool FC’s front four of Maxi, Meireles, Kuyt and Suarez was effective thanks to the quartet’s fabulous movement and intelligence, none of the four possessed tremendous speed and it was obvious that this needed to be rectified if Liverpool were to move on to the next level.

So in came Stewart Downing, Jose Enrique and Craig Bellamy, three fleet-footed players who rarely come out second best in a speed duel, giving Kenny Dalglish a Liverpool team that was now as quick physically as it is mentally. While technical attributes are probably more important than raw power or pace, there are certain games where these qualities make all the difference and Liverpool’s speed demons will never have a better chance to make an impact than at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

Kenny Dalglish is not the only Premier League manager trying to mould a new team and develop a style of play, with Chelsea’s latest boss Andre Villas-Boas handed the simple task of winning trophies whilst playing attractive attacking football. The young Portuguese manager has decided to try to recreate the system that gave him so much success at Porto and although Chelsea now look more fluid and creative going forward they have encountered some difficulties defensively which culminated in a humiliating 3-5 home loss to Arsenal last month (a game in which Arsenal had 13 shots on goal).
arsenal chelsea shotsd Liverpool | Will Be Flying High If They Expose Chelsea High Line

Can Liverpool re-produce Arsenal's performance?

Playing an aggressive high defensive line is a crucial aspect of AVB’s teams and although this worked brilliantly in Portugal, the Chelsea boss may be starting to realise that he doesn’t have the personnel to carry the tactic out as he would like. For all their good qualities, Alex, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry are not speed merchants and many teams have found this season that it just takes a simple ball over the top to cut through the Blues’ back-line.

One man who has had success against the Chelsea defence in recent seasons is Craig Bellamy, who famously helped tear them apart for Manchester City two seasons ago as he scored twice in a 4-2 victory (both goals coming on the counter attack against a high defensive line). While Bellamy and his knees are now two years older he has not lost any of that trademark pace and it is crucial that he starts this game either on the wing or preferably up front alongside Suarez.

As mentioned previously, Bellamy’s chance creation rate (Bellamy has created 6 chances in the 143 minutes he’s played so far this season which equates to nearly one every 23.83 minutes) and goal-scoring return (2 goals in his 2 starts in all competitions, with his other appearances all from the bench) has been phenomenal in such a limited amount of playing time and with the Welshman full of confidence after scoring for his country it would be foolish not to start him at the Bridge.

If Bellamy does start then he will come up against his old rival John Terry, a man who he slated in an interview after the 4-2 City win a few years ago, and with the England captain going through a tough time at the moment he will not want to come up against the feisty number 39. So far this season Terry has been dribbled past 3 times and has conceded 116 chances, and with Chelsea letting in 15 goals already it is obvious their captain is not on form. Battling Bellamy could lead to Terry losing his composure and if recent games are anything to go by he will make at least one glaring error and who better than Bellamy to capitalise on it?
bellamy heatmap chelsea 09 10 Liverpool | Will Be Flying High If They Expose Chelsea High Line

Bellamy key man for Liverpool Vs Chelsea?

While it is possible that Bellamy could start out wide, this is unlikely to affect his contribution since he would most likely come up against another player struggling for form; fullback Jose Bosingwa. The Portuguese right-back has been exposed time and time again this season (conceding 90 chances and being dribbled past 3 times) and has looked suspect whenever he has been up against a pacey, direct opponent. Whether it is Downing or Bellamy that starts on the left, Liverpool are sure to have some joy on the flanks on Sunday afternoon.

It would of course be foolish of Chelsea to focus on one individual when Liverpool possess a player of Luis Suarez’ quality and with the Uruguayan starting to reach top form, Terry and co will be in for a tough afternoon. Liverpool’s number 7 may not possess the lightening pace of Bellamy but he is still quicker than most and that speed coupled with his intelligent movement means that he is sure to take advantage of the huge amounts of space in behind the Blues defence.

If Liverpool are afforded as many shots at goal as Chelsea’s recent opponents then it will be another case of ‘can Liverpool finish their chances?’ But with Suarez hitting 4 for Uruguay, Carroll getting better every game and Bellamy chomping at the bit to play, the team should have the quality to open up Chelsea and score goals thanks to the pace we now possess in attack.

MATCH PREVIEW.

The fixture in which Fernando Torres made his Chelsea debut last February comes around twice this month; first Sunday's Premier League encounter and then the Carling Cup quarter-final nine days later.

Familiarity has bred contempt over the last seven seasons in which there have been an incredible 28 matches between the two. Liverpool fans deride Chelsea for their lack of history, Chelsea mock Liverpool for having nothing but their history to cling to. Neither set of fans are strictly correct.

Torres, if he plays, should relish the opportunity to get one of the many monkeys off his back. "Will Torres ever score against Liverpool?" will always be an issue until he actually does score against them. Raul Meireles, Liverpool's Stamford Bridge match winner last season, can also expect more than his fair share of attention. In his case Liverpool's loss has definitely been Chelsea's gain.

However, all these are side issues to the real meat in this match. That lies in the fact that both managers are desperate for a win. Andre Villas-Boas has so far presided over a set of results which could be described as satisfactory and not much more. With three defeats already, Chelsea are in danger of being left in the wake of the Manchester pace-setters in the title race.

Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish, whilst he has certainly reinvigorated Liverpool, has not cured their chronic tendency to surrender silly points far too easily. His side create loads of chances, especially at home, and convert too few.

Take away the goals of Luis Suarez, and the rest of Liverpool's players have managed to score just six goals from open play in 11 Premier League matches. Champions League qualification will start to look a tall order if that continues.

Gerrard is definitely out and I hope that Kenny doesnt play Carra either. The only way to beat Chelsea is pace and Bellamy has to start. We either play a 4-3-3 or a 4-5-1 with Henderson, Adam and Lucas in midfield, Downing, Bellamy and Suarez upfront. Carroll should be on the bench.

It goes without saying it's a huge game for us today. Arsenal have quiety gone past us, spurs will have two games in hand after today and chelsea will be six points ahead of us if they win. We are well capable of winning the game today. Can we take our chances? Chelsea look vulnerable defensively. Let's have a real go. Come on you Redman!!

Admire your attitude Adam but the last few performances haven't been encouraging; we'll need to improve today.

We slipped up against Norwich and Swansea and that is going to put us in real trouble if we lose today and against Man City.

best AVAILABLE team imo with perhaps maxi replacing kuyt and or carragher giving it a go in midfield if it gets too much for the midfield.he'd add some much needed bite imo.

fully expect kenny to stick with his sensations though tbh.

Meireles (i'm assuming that's who you meant) on the left wing? Aquilani here against his will? Nzogbia, who has lit up the league at Villa, in the team?

Interesting. Parker's a decent player, but we have better.

Scotty- I dont agree with you about Parker. The only player in the Liverpool midfield who is better than him is Gerrard who is out injured. We should have bought Parker in the summer.

Parker's older than Gerrard and is a decent, hardworking player. Wouldn't have minded him if he was younger. We have better, although he would have strengthened our squad no doubt.

for me parker is a similar player to lucas just better and we needed more creativity which i believe adam gives us but having adam and lucas in the middle offers very little pace and seeing as we dont have much pace out wide as well gives lfc a big problem in my opinion of course ;)

the alternative one will imo give the team a fighting chance even if its still not the best.
