The squad is taking shape but I think it is still very thin in midfield and upfront. We need a right sided midfielder, a playmaker and a striker if we want to challenge for top honours.

keane signing/selling was bogus. no justification for selling a player 6 months into a contract with no replacement or fit striker available during a title challenge.
The use of the word bogus is, erm, bogus. Justification was that he was 28, had flopped, didn't get along with the manager, didn't fit into the team, and there was a chance to offload him and make just a £3 million loss on it. We've been over this so many times, but I'll repeat myself again. We scored more goals in less games without Keane than we did with him. We got more points in less games without Keane than we did with him. It wasn't ideal, it wasn't the most satisfactory of episodes for all concerned, but it happened and I'm glad we got rid and made the loss as little as possible. His career from that point onwards suggests we were right to get rid, or we'd have made a huge loss - possibly almost all of the fee - further down the road.
nope. keane did no less than the top performers in the time he was here. yossi had a good 2nd half of the season, but did little in the 1st half of the season. likewise other players.
all that blue print speal.

Bit like Downing was Keane for me. Paid well over the top for him. Even I knew, years before we had any interest, that Keane was, at best, an average striker for Liverpool. So how come Rafa couldn't see what I already knew before paying way over the top for the player. Doesn't say much for Rafa. Never worth the 18 million or whatever it was we forked out. I personally feel the same for Downing's fee. He's simply not worth it. Hope to be proven wrong, but I doubt I will.
I don't personally think Keane flopped at all. Interesting stats aside. I think he just never was the Lucas style yes man that Rafa wanted in his side. THinking Bellamy was another like that - and he also was shown the exit door. Think Keane got shafted and was never given the opportunities to shine under Rafa. Saw himself scoring goals only to be droppped or subbed, when players like Kuyt (who was pretty fucking average at the time) were the first name on the team sheet.
No, Keane, dislike him as I did, still got the royal rafa shaft pole up his arse if you ask me. SHould never have bought him in the first place you daft c unn y.
My opinion. Do with it what you will.

It was better to take a smallish hit on him than give him the chance to really prove it was a mistake, by which point we'd have been lucky to get anything back.
"Lucas style yes man treatment" - or young player settling into a new country, league and lifestyle treatment.
Keane saw himself scoring goals only to be dropped? It took him 18 games to score a goal, 12 league games. He didn't do enough. As with Kenny now, I back the manager's judgement. Might have been off when he bought him, but he had the balls to admit he got it wrong.

keane scored the same amount of goals as torres and gerrard in his brief spell. he was treated harshly. some players were more favoured than others.
rafa wanted yes men and didnt get along with players who offered an opinion.

Rafa wanted players who could adhere to a tactical plan. Keane couldn't/wouldn't so he was sold. Torres only started 20 league games that season, so it wouldn't have been hard for Keane to outscore him in his brief time here (which he didn't). He didn't outscore Gerrard either, despite Gerrard having injury problems.
We improved greatly after he went. We picked up more points and scored more goals in less games - fact.

the club will look at contributions as a whole, not picking and choosing selective bits. its like saying the white elephant was a success here with 6 assists (3 in 1 game) - like it doesnt matter he did nothing for the other 34 games.
its almost like keane was setup to fail.

Can't believe we are talking about Keane again. My two cents on Robbie (as an Irishman mind) is that he's an ok player. He's slowed down a lot and has a much higher opinion of himself that he should. He's usually a good man to get the odd goal but it prone to missing from two yards (i was at the georgia match if anyone contests that last point). Keane was not mobile enough to fit into the system and was rightly shipped out when Rafa realizd that he had made a mistake in signing him. The club moved on to greater things and nearly won the league. I have no resentment against Robbie as i think he is a good lad for the most part but to say he was 'shafted' is a load of rubbish!

yeah true rafa spent money like it was on tap. dalglish spends money as if it was his own. £20mil for a white elephant who hardly played in his entire career to replace alonso

here we are asking for fans to be patient and give our new players time to settle (which i agree with) yet some are defending rafa with regards his treatment of keane .was keane given the same luxury striker kuyt and many others who were automatic choices had even though they failed to play well or do their job properly ? keane only made 16 starts , hardly time to settle in . massive mistake in signing him in the first place if im honest . im sure the 18 or 20 mil he cost us could've signed some one much more needed .
seems to me rafa threw his dolly's out of the pram when the board wouldnt let him sign Barry.. thank god he wasnt allowed to sign barry . apart from a few games hes been very poor indeed.he was one of the poorest players at the world cup , the way opposition players were going past him like he wasnt there was very embarrassing .

Parks, nobody's reputation was enhanced in the red lions uniform at the world cup, with the possible exception of Milner. So, it's a flawed yardstick. Barry is a decent player, but not an Alonso, for me, I would have to say. He is getting to play regularly at Man. C., so it is hard to make a case that he is a bad player.

hi camelot , i might have been a bit harsh on Barry as hes obviously a decent player to be still playing at man city. i just dont think he was what we needed at the time even if he was versatile.im sure modric and nasri were available in the same year .modric 16.5 and nasri at 12 mil . especially modric who was getting rave reviews whilst playing for Croatia and am i correct in thinking he signed for 40 k per week .he would have been a perfect replacement for alonso .

Barry looks good when he is surrounded by quality players like Aguero, Silva, Nasri etc- IMO he is a very average player- no comparison with Alonso.

He is still haunted by the terrible visions of Mesut Ozil tearing past him in the World Cup.

Why so hard to believe I thought Keane was overpriced and not really that good a player. No reason for me to make it up if it was my opinion at the time. Said it numerous times onthe Echo board. Mystifying signing for me, and perhaps one to appease fans who had not seen a big money signing over the summer. Backfired deluxe on rafa.
I hoped Keane would prove me wrong, but he never really got a chance, for which I felt sorry for him. In the end, he should never have been signed. I sadly feel the same about Downing. Hope he gets a chance to prove ne wrong too.
To be honest, really can't believe LFC 'scouts' haven't noticed Downing's visibly absent from many games he has played for several teams. Great talent, but not consistent enough for me. ANyway, who teh fuck am I compared to LFC scouts who have delivered us greats such as Djimi Traore, Paulsen, Dossena, Insua, et al?
I didn't lie about Keane. No reason to. Never thought he was very good for LFC. Alright for Spurs, I suppose. And, as for his goal celebration, well, my 4 year old could do that.

keane scored the same amount of goals as torres and gerrard in his brief spell. he was treated harshly. some players were more favoured than others.
rafa wanted yes men and didnt get along with players who offered an opinion.
We picked up more points and scored more goals in less games - fact.
rafa's career has tanked worse than keane's
Beauty!
To think there was a post on here recently discussing the merits of having him back. No thanks. Thanks for the memories and all that.

Don't see the relevance of your post to mine. Obviously something you felt compelled to say, regardless. :ph43r:

Many fans would have him back in a heartbeat. There is a great deal of affection for him, especially among local fans I speak to in various mediums.

You have the monopoly on quoting facts then do you? Next time I'll make sure you get to vet my post.
