Former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson believes Luis Suarez is the closest thing the club has had to Kenny Dalglish since the legendary Scot ended his playing career. Uruguayan Suarez has been a huge success since joining Liverpool from Ajax in a £23m deal in January. Lawrenson told BBC Sport: "Suarez could play for any team in the world and be outstanding." Liverpool meet Premier League leaders Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. TALE OF THE RED TAPE Continue reading the main story Liverpool's Luis Suarez & Kenny Dalglish * Dalglish: born in Glasgow, Scotland * Signed for £440,000 from Celtic in 1977 * Scored 118 goals in 355 games for the Reds * Suarez: born in Salto, Uruguay * Signed for £22.7m from Ajax in January, 2011 * So far has scored 11 goals in 28 games for the Reds BBC Sport football expert Lawrenson believes it will show off the top-flight's two finest performers this season in Suarez and David Silva. He said: "I wouldn't argue with anyone who says Silva and Suarez have been the best players in the Premier League this season. Along with Robin van Persie at Arsenal, they have been absolutely top class. "Lots of players have arrived at Liverpool and been compared with Dalglish but I think he's the closest. He's still got a long way to go but he's got a lot of Kenny's qualities. He sees things others don't and will score and create goals." Suarez is the latest Liverpool player to inherit the number seven shirt Dalglish wore with such distinction in an Anfield playing career that lasted from his arrival as a £440,000 signing from Celtic in 1977 until he decided to concentrate solely on management in 1990 after scoring 118 goals in 355 games. Suarez replaced Fernando Torres when he left Liverpool for Chelsea in a British record £50m deal - and has since outshone his Spanish predecessor. Lawrenson said: "In America, they would call Suarez 'a franchise player' - you sign him then you can build your entire franchise around him. I'm convinced he could play for any team in the world and be outstanding and the good thing for Liverpool is he is still learning. "He's got raw ability, he's hungry and got real fight within him. He never gives up on anything and three or four times in a game he does things that will have you moving towards the edge of your seat." Lawrenson also said he sees similarities between Suarez and another of his former team-mates from Liverpool's glory days, Dalglish's strike partnerIan Rush. He said: "Suarez is a bit like Ian Rush in that he makes defenders nervous, he can smell the panic in defenders and takes advantage - which was something Rushy was so great at. "Suarez is extremely hard-wearing, can take the knocks and bounces off defenders when they challenge him. There is no doubt he goes down a bit too easily at times but I think sometimes he does that to protect himself. "He is also a team player and I'd hate to have played against him. You know that even on a bad day he is still such a good player. He will run and chase everything and despite having all that great individual ability he is a team player. "Suarez is also the sort of character and player who will lift his team-mates. They will look around the dressing room, see a player of his quality ready to go out there with them and think 'we're going to be all right today.'" Lawrenson is equally appreciative of Silva's brilliant contribution to City's start to the season, although he regards him as a different talent to Suarez. "Silva is more elegant but he has ghost-like qualities as a footballer," says Lawrenson. "He just ghosts into great positions and what I love about him is that he always plays with his head up and his first touch is magnificent. "Saying someone plays with their head up may sound simple but I've seen plenty who don't and you might as well play with blinkers on if you keep your head down." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bet scotty was frothing at the mouth when he read the headline

Not often I'd agree with Lawro, but he's bang on the money here. The greatest compliment to be given any Liverpool player is to be compared with Dalglish in his likeness. |

vamp is good - but comparisons are far too early and unfair on both dalglish and suarez. he has yet to hit the goal trail. torres had a better impact. suarez needs to go on a goal scoring spree. |

Dunno about a bigger impact mate. Don't forget Luis scored on his debut too. And that was from the bench. Agree that he needs to score more for the amount of chances he gets, but his game is about so much more than goals. That's where Lawro is drawing the comparisons I think. |

Suarez offers so much more trouble than Torres for me. At his best Torres needed to be face to face with an opponent, then use his speed over 5 yards to lose him and creat a chance. Probably a better finsher than Suarez has shown, but not for the last 2 years. Suarez offers more in other areas of the park. Has shown he can make goals and chances out of absolutely nothing (United chance for Kuyt for one). Constant threat whereas Torres was an out and out striker who never got onthe ball as much as you wanted him to. Who'd I rather have? Suarez by far. Suarez is worth well more than the 50 chelsea wasted on Torres. Lucky to get 20 Million for Torres today. |

suarez just has an amazing ability to make you go wowww!!how did he do that. for me,ive not seen a player of his like at anfield since barnes.beardsley was good but suarez is much better than him.hes quite like kenny.perhaps kenny recognises some of his own traits in suarez.the world class teams are certainly aware of him now ..if they werent already |

Torres and Suarez are different types of players, both of them on their day brilliant and would make a fantastic pairing, Suarez offers more variety but Torres knew where the goal was, as soon as you saw these lads play you knew they were special. Don't think the comparison with players from another era can be made on playing ability but for me you can compare the exitement that what these type of players generate with the fans everytime they get on the field, they are special |

Torres and Suarez have different skill sets. Torres plays his best in a counter attack mode, where he can get the ball with more room to operate, and get one-on-one with defenders. But he needed Gerrad and Alonso to find him, too. His strength and powerfull shot made him feared, playing for us. Suarez is almost opposite in some respects, in that he seems better in tight corners that he can wriggle out of. He has this technique of using his small stature as an advantage against bigger defenders. As when he shields the ball with his back arched, then swivels in that position like lightning. Whether he goes left or right, or uses the nutmeg, he regularly catches the tight defender out, which is demoralising for them. He seems to create most of his own chances. His finishing lacks consistency, and is accurate rather than powerfull. Whether they could play together would be conjecture, but it is mouth-watering to imagine. Consigned to the "if only" bin now, of course. |
