Good for you Sooty, you have done us proud. I give Downing 5
And you IQometer has just hit single figures. Bravo.

downing is an average player. when the team plays well, he will blend in and may even contribute, but when the team is up against it, he is one of many who shy away and does not take the initiative to be productive.
Now this is a surprise - Blonde Boy hasn't a clue what average means either. Shocking stuff.
why dont you explain your definition of average? my understanding is a player who gets 6/7 consistently with the odd 5 and 8
My definition is a player who is exactly in the middle of the spectrum of players between the worst player and the best player. Given there are something like 4,000 professional players in this country, and between 600 and 1,000 in the Premier League, Downing is not average. As far as English players go, he is a regular in the England team. Of the 4,000 professional players in this country, there are probably about 2,500 English players. Downing is regularly picked as one of the best 11. That's not average.
is that not flawed? just by virtue of being selected for england does not mean a player is above average....
you are also excluding non-english players in this analysis.....
heskey was an england regular, as was crouch....
bent is currently in the england set up....
robinson/james were england keepers.....

Yes it doesyou are also excluding non-english players in this analysis..... no I'm not - I have clearly stated the number of pro players, and separately stated the number of English players.heskey was an england regular, as was crouch.... Both were well above averagebent is currently in the england set up.... He is well above averagerobinson/james were england keepers..... Both well above average
All of these England players were well above average. Many were found out on the world stage, as they weren't World Class, but they eased through qualifying groups against average teams and average players.
You've inadvertently strengthened my argument. Many thanks.

if bent, heskey are above average, then i feel we can draw a line under the debate here.
