Dalglish sees signs of progress

Kenny Dalglish believes the manner of Liverpool's displays against both Manchester clubs is an indicator of the progress being made at Anfield.

Sunday's 1-1 draw against 10-man Manchester City may have been the fourth successive time they have been held at home but that does not really tell the full story.

Having gone behind to Vincent Kompany's 31st-minute goal they equalised within two minutes when Charlie Adam's shot was turned past Joe Hart by Joleon Lescott.

From that point most of the attacking was done by the team in red and when Mario Balotelli was sent off for a second bookable offence just 18 minutes after coming on, the pressure only increased on Roberto Mancini's side.

Had it not been for England goalkeeper Joe Hart, who pulled off a series of good saves, Liverpool would have inflicted City's first Barclays Premier League defeat of the season.

It was a similar story just over a month ago when Manchester United were the visitors and although there have been dropped points against Norwich and Swansea in between, Dalglish can see the positives.

"We have played both Manchester clubs here now and we have walked away a little bit disappointed we have only take one point off each," said the Scot.

"Maybe that is the mark of the improvements we have made here.

"We are delighted with the way we played and the quality of the performance and with a bit more luck we could have had three points.

"We will play a lot worse than that and get three points."

Dalglish was full of praise for his players who, certainly for the majority of the second half, made City look ordinary - something very few English teams have done this season.

"They had fantastic attitude, commitment, determination and pride in playing for the club and we can't ask for much more than that," he said.

"If you are playing a team the quality of Manchester City you can't afford to have anyone playing below standard.

"I don't think any one of our players could be - or should be - disappointed with their performance.

"If we can continue doing what we are doing then they will get more points than they lose."

The draw extended Liverpool's unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches but Dalglish insisted he was only concerned about the future.

"We don't count backwards, we look forwards but we are delighted with the way the boys are playing," he added.

Should have.

The reason we didn't beat those teams was a combination of missing chances, coming up against some fantastic goalkeeping and bad luck.

Trust the King.

coincidently the same reasoning for almost every game this season; bad luck, excellent keeping etc etc.

lack of clinical finishing is the main issue. we played 1 upfront and that limits striking opportunities - especially when we have an MF of henderson, lucas and adam.

We had the chances - what does it matter how many we play up front when we have created chances?

Adam and Lucas were outstanding. Go on, give us a laugh - tell us they weren't Blondie...

adam played well. lucas was mixed; some good bits of play, some regular hospital balls.

why was agger having a go at lucas?

poor finishing was the reason we didnt score many goals.

Lucas was Man of the Match - fact.

I read your amusing nonsense about Lucas on another thread - wasn't of any use to me on that one either.

This may sound negative but if the DM in your team is MOM that is nothing to shout home about. Lucas did play very well- of that there is no doubt.

The progression is in the quality of play which has improved but trophies are handed out at the end of the season to teams who score goals and win matches, not to teams who play good football without any end product which is where Liverpool currently are. We need Gerrard fit asap and we need to sign a quality striker and attacking right sided midfield player in the Jan transfer window.

You miss the point, just because he is classed as a DM it's not all he was doing, his play was progressive in most parts not defensive as you like to make out, I suggest you go and watch the game again or the youtube clip of lucas's play..

Their MOM was Joe Hart so what does that tell you?

He did far more than defend. And he was crucial to our game plan. City have a lot of class players whom we had to keep quiet, which we did.

Lucas had a very good game. Jose, Adam, Hendo and Downing all had decent matches for me too. Skrtel and Agger super solid again. Most, if not all, of the players in the team had good games. Hard to find a player who really deserved criticism overall. Let's face it. We played Moneybags City.

The few down points to go with a good performance by the team:

Couple of very poor back passes could have cost us.
Couple of very good chances went begging could have won us the game.

That's football. Think some of the criticism launched on certain players has been over the top.
