Hodgson to date has been top notch for england imo...credit were its due. Instead of lucky england, other teams no good etc...i think its time england fans acknowledged this time around its the best there has been in years...holland and others have gone yet england win the group they are in with france beating ukraine on home soil. Had this been redknap doing this then all arrogance and full pomp from him would be on display. England will comfortably beat italy.Hodgson is on a roll...3 games to win to lift the trophy...and they will imo. Im not an england fan but hey those of you that are ...perhaps it is time to recognise roy is doing a good job...as are the players.
Hodgson is not doing a good job FFS. His team selection is awful. Milner starting every game? Yound playing after two awful performances. Terry? The list goes on and on. He has set expectations low (as he always does) because at some stage this turgid football is not going to be enough to pull them through. England qualified from the worst group (and i include group A in that reckoning). The only merit should be for beating Sweden.

And had Dalglish been the man currently in charge of England and topping the group...you'd be the first slagging him off, the team off, and the performances off, calling for a change in manager.
Seems only Fergie and now Roy are immune from your criticism.

Terry is team player that others will look to for Leadership on the park. Deluxe ######, but a leader it has to be admitted. Plus, what are the options? Did well to stop that goal that wasn't counted, which was clearly offside anyway (and few have failed to report).
I love John Terry. Think he's great!!!

Very good point regarding Terry, HW - what are the options, who would take his place?
That's a frightening thought for England fans isn't it? Since Terry is all but done as an international player - can't see him going to another major tournament.
Cahill, Lescott, erm... Smalling? Jones?
Quality centre backs are thin on the ground.

What is Roy, or any England manager to do for that matter? He's playing the percentages. Milner played for City and Young played for United. Rooney is the darling of the press. If he never played them, then he'd be crucified in the press. I personally would play them.
Don't think many would condemn him puttng Downing on the left to replace Young, but doubt we'll see it. I really think Roy is making the decisions he is expected to make, and he can hold his hands up at the end and say, "I played the players who perform in the Premier League week in week out". For that, you cannot condemn him.
I personally think he'd get a lot out of Downing in games like this. Downing thrives on big matches as opposed to the slog of league footy. I'd deffo be very tempted to stick Chamberlain or Walcott on for longer spells of matches.
Thought Milner was better against eh Ulraine, but agree Young has been dire on the left and frequently gives it up. Think he is trying to do too much. Rooney wasn't that good either, but got his goal. I think Carroll has been our best looking forward. At least he has the presence of mind to know when he has to hold it up, and on this England team, a team having trouble holding on to possession, a forward like Carroll is more important.
Reckon we might see a 4-5-1 versus Italy. Rooney alone up front. We'll all be playiung for pens. Promises to be a right international yawner.....

Think you've missed RM's point there Antler. Hodgson is a good fit for England as we are the mid-table mediocre of world football. His style of play will get the most out of England in terms of results. I'm certainly not advocating that we'll be good on the eyes - in fact the total opposite.
Fact of the matter is a mediocre team that has always had unrealistic expectations from the fans has had some of that removed due to a manager that is anything but exciting. Which in turn will benefit the team.

Great to see the OOT bitters on here that hate England having to lump us winning our group while playing shyte. I love it! I reckon we might do a 4kin Chelsea. Be great.
Best thing is - no one expects England to do 4ck all. Few really care in Liverpool. But plenty on here obviously want to see England do shyte.
I'll always be a scouser first, but happy to admit I still want to see all british nations do well in any tournament.
Go head ENgland. Go head Stevie - love to see him lifting the trophy.
I would love to have a country to support H but I don't, so I have always leaned towards the R.O.I. Watching England has always made me feel ill and angry at their stupid delusions of grandeur and even worse, their followers with their sickening patriotic dirges. I can only wish them ill. Sorry about that.

It's the sought of xenophobic attitude scousers (who really consider ourselves scousers before English), find understandable, but disappointing. You can read through most of it, and see it as just bitter. The fact you all fervently support English teams is a strange paradox.

cant agree there hughie...its results based and he hasnt lost so far.tbf to him he came in at short notice and his handling of the ferdinand affair was very good,he laid down a marker straight away saying gerrard is captain ...none of that dithering under capello. he lost key players to injury and suspension yet got on with it and he gave chamberlaine his bow without any hassle.None of the egos allowed with him it seems that have been evident before with england. Results wise hes achieved alot in the tournament...2 wins and a draw against fancied france...all with a team that would not have usualy played and that i think is key...he should stick with them now and not play rooney who apart from a goal was abysmal realy. Didnt want roy at liverpool and couldnt wait to see the back of him...that still stands..but hey come on how about a bit of credit were its due to him for once, when did england last win a group they were in...and imo they are getting stronger now and will see italy off no problem.

yes,its proving a good fit for roy and england...something it wasnt at lfc. antler if kenny was scotland manager and doing a similar job id say so...its totaly unrelated to club football imo. perhaps that is the only job kenny would be able to get now anyway as no one would trust him in the premier league again.... i wonder why he doesnt go for the scotland job when its available...perhaps he will.

Well, I know scousers that hate the England national side, for different reasons, so I have no idea where you are from. It was you who said you hold nothing but ill will for England, while my response was diffferent for any british side. I'd find your feelings toward England odd if you actually lived there. Perhaps not if you were born elsewhere.
I also find it disapointing when people from Britain do not support all home nations, but well understandable the English sides are historically disliked. It is an oddity to me, in general, that anyone supports a team in a city from which they do not hail.
You are correct that this should not get too menacing a thread. I am simply expressing an opinion, as you have done. I mean no ill will of it all. I'm scouse with a paddy name, but still like England, and live in Canada. Now that's a few paradoxes.
Judging by that hat in your Avatar, and your Hoppy handle, might I deduce you are from New Zealand?

Is credit still due to Roy after last nights horror show?
32 % possession 9 attempts with 1 on target in 120 minutes (Italy had 36 with 8 on target)

Where do you think I am from H? I wouldn't want this to turn into an argument
  Nice one H, but you are a little bit out. Norris Green is the answer. And yourself?

That's effective? 50% win rate in competitive matches so far for Roy. Wonder if he'll still be lauded when he maintains that ratio in the World Cup qualifiers...

England do not have enough quality players with technique, as always we had the work horses like Milner and Parker playing and the standard players like Lescott, Cole, Young and the others but apart from Rooney there are no great players in our team, Stevie G is getting old and can no longer do his bit for the whole game. Until England have at least 4-5 top class players playing we will win nothing

The English players play at the top teams in the supposed 'best league in the world'. Comparing the guys who played last night vs Italy surely the English should put up a better resistance based on the level they play at week in week out.
Italy have 5 for Juve,4 for Milan and 1 for Palermo,Roma,City,Napoli and Bologna while England had 4 from Liverpool,3 from City and United, 2 from Chelsea, 1 from Spurs and Arsenal.
Arguably, only Spain have more players in their squad playing at 'top teams' than England

as time goes on roy may not even qualify for the world cup with his style of play but overall he put on a reasonable show with what he had to go with at the euros...imo.
