Hillsborough files release date set

20th Jun 2012 - Latest News

The Hillsborough Independent Panel will disclose documents relating to the disaster and its aftermath to the families of those who died, on September 12, 2012.

Once the families have been informed of the panel's findings, disclosure will be made to the wider public.

The panel will also publish a report which explains how the disclosed documents add to public understanding.

The announcement was made via an official statement from the panel:

"The Hillsborough Independent Panel is now approaching the completion of its work of securing maximum possible disclosure of documents relating to the disaster and its aftermath.

"Disclosure, as it has been made clear, will be first to the Hillsborough families and then to the wider public.

"At the same time, in line with its terms of reference, the panel will publish its report explaining how the disclosed documents add to public understanding.

"The independent panel has accessed and analysed documents from over 80 organisations and running to over 400,000 pages.

"Earlier this year the panel announced that because it was still receiving new material it would complete its work in the autumn.

"The panel is on course to achieve this and announces today that the disclosure to families will take place on Wednesday September 12 in Liverpool.

"The panel hopes that by making this announcement it will give the bereaved families sufficient time to prepare for the disclosure.

"One of the panel's central objectives has been consultation with the bereaved families.

"At its first meeting in February 2010 it met representatives of the three family groups. The panel has also contacted those families not affiliated to the groups. It is the panel's intention that these consultations should continue.

"In due course the panel will contact each family to explain details of the disclosure arrangements."

Looking forward to that date, and see just who'll get the "bullet".

My main concern would be the attempts to shield Thatcher and Hurd from the backlash.

Will the documents all be given up and accounted for? With a Conservative government in control I seriously doubt it.

There are passages in that article that leave me worried that the cover ups will continue and I truly hope that the feelings I am getting are wholly wrong....

"The panel will also publish a report which explains how the disclosed documents add to public understanding."

The announcement was made via an official statement from the panel:

"At the same time, in line with its terms of reference, the panel will publish its report explaining how the disclosed documents add to public understanding."

Two references to "adding to the publics understanding" is this meaning brainwashing the publics understanding?

"The panel hopes that by making this announcement it will give the bereaved families sufficient time to prepare for the disclosure."

I only hope that is not code for here is another kick in the teeth but we will give you advanced warning before it is made public.

"In due course the panel will contact each family to explain details of the disclosure arrangements."

I hope that is not a follow up to my previously stated fear and that it is merely protocol.

However I have felt a good general feeling that the truth will come out this time all through this process, its just that the terminology of the news report leaves me
very concerned.

I'm forever the sceptic when it comes to governments and their hidden agendas.

We get fobbed off with the old, "In the Public's best interest" bullshit, which will almost surely be used again in this case if it so happens that certain evidence is found to be with-held.

Rest assured gentlemen that Thatcher will come out of all this squeaky clean.

Misty - I know from personal dealings what the authorities are capable of covering up when it comes to protecting their own. They are more than capable of hiding the truth and corrupting the facts when it comes to protecting their own , in particular the police.

It may be that what I am reading into the pieces I highlighted is that they are going to actually tell partly the truth and say that the authorities and in the main the police were responsible but only accidentally due to their well intentioned but ultimately incorrect actions, thereby absolving anyone of any responsibility. a sort of halfway house outcome.

I have been upbeat about the past years actions for the truth but the media report left my with a hollow feeling for some reason and I really hope I am being paranoid this time.
