Italy international Daniele De Rossi has spoken in glowing terms about Steven Gerrard ahead of their battle on Sunday, describing the England captain as his "idol". Gerrard has put in a series of talismanic performances for England at Euro 2012, allowing Roy Hodgson's men to finish top of Group D and set up a clash with Italy in the quarter-finals. The Liverpool star has provided the telling pass for three of England's five goals at the tournament so far, setting up Joleon Lescott, Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney with right-wing crosses. But despite his attacking impact, Gerrard's defensive work has arguably been just as crucial: England have been widely praised for their resilience, with three goals conceded in five matches under Hodgson. And Gerrard has been a key part of that, stationing himself in front of the back four and, alongside Scott Parker, forming a shield for the centre backs - as well as utilising his range of passing to launch counter-attacks, a key strategy for England at the tournament. Having been captivated by the all-round nature of Gerrard's play, De Rossi will attempt to employ some of those characteristics in his own game. "Steven Gerrard is my idol. He has been at the pinnacle for ten years," De Rossi said. "You see Gerrard defending and attacking. I would like to be able to play more like that." De Rossi has been stationed in the backline for Italy at points during Euro 2012, and it is possible he may have to reprise that role given the news that Giorgio Chiellini, the Juventus centre back, will not play against England. --------------------------------- put a bid in buck de rossi is class and far better than all other midfielders at anfield put together (gerrard apart of course) |

Gerrard has been missing from the Liverpool team for the past 2 seasons bar the odd performance (Newcastle -last season). I dont give a monkeys about what he does in an England shirt - In fact the England games are responsible for a lot of his injuries. |

My thoughts exactly Steve. England's gain is our loss in this situation I'm afraid. |

gerrard and suarez aren't enough to make a great team you need at least 6 or 7 of those top class players to make a great team and we are well short of those top class players and that why we are not a top team and wont be for the foreseeable future. |

No "average" or "poor" player would play for a team thats 8th best in the country. An "average" or "poor" player wouldn't even be playing the PL. |

Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Lucas, Gerrard, Suarez - top class. Carroll, Enrique, Bellamy - very good players. Henderson and Downing - capable of far better than they've shown. We do need new players, but not as many as is being claimed - in my opinion. |

Soctty- Lucas is not a top class player- he is a decent player at best- he has a long way to go to become a top class player. Carroll similarly has a lot to proove before he can be considered as a very good player. Gerrard was a top class player but has been missing for the last 2 years (saving his best for England). We do need a few quality players for this team to progress. |

Gerrard is my idol too, and judging by the shirt sales, still the number 1 idol amongst Liverpool fans too. |

you can call lucas shite if you like but using coming 8th as a reason is bollocks as you know. if all supports supports were like me rafa would still be our manager.,and our team would now be full of world class players. you marched the streets with me to rid our club of the 2 carpet baggers, but then didnt back our manager who had no cash and board backing in his last 3 transfer windows. with all his potential targets now gracing the premiership. deep down you know the score, but youv took it so far you cant back down. yes i need to move on. |

Steve, the cluelessness of Mycroft, JB and fred might be catching I see. ![]() Seriously though, you have your opinion and it differs greatly from mine. He's a top class player, automatic pick for Brazil when fit, automatic pick for Liverpool when fit, our player of the year in 2011. He has nothing to prove to me and to many others who appreciate the work he does and the contribution he makes. A few goons on a forum don't define a player's ability, funnily enough. |

TOP POST!! Post's like this clearly define those with their heads stuck in the sand & those who have clear football vision, your view on the very average lucas is spot-on correct. Funny irony of all the lucas circus is that if Woy had signed lucas many of the ones who think him to be any good would be singing from a very different opinion hymn sheet!!
