Skrt chasers: City prepare £20million bid for Liverpool's star defender

First big test looms for new boss Rodgers as the champions look for a cheaper alternative to AC Milan's £35m-rated Thiago Silva

Brendan Rodgers faces his first major battle as Liverpool boss with Manchester City ready to move for defender Martin Skrtel.

In a classic case of good news bad news for Rodgers, centre-half and Denmark Euro 2012 star Daniel Agger has expressed his desire to extend his Anfield contract.

But the other half of last season’s impressive central defensive partnership, Skrtel, is the focus of serious interest from Roberto Mancini’s title winners.

And that will present a big test for Rodgers, who will meet the defender in an attempt to persuade him to remain with Liverpool.

Skrtel got married at the weekend and has put any question of his future on hold until he returns from his honeymoon in a fortnight.

City though, are preparing a £20million bid, with boss Roberto Mancini settled on the Slovakia defender as his main transfer target after being priced out of a move for Brazil star Thiago Silva.

His Italian club AC Milan want £35m for the 27-year old, and Mancini sees the dependable Skrtel - voted Player of the Year at the Reds last season - as a better bet.

After four years at Anfield, he has also been the subject of interest from moneybags Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

Yet City have the financial muscle to compete with any club, and the defender certainly hasn’t ruled out a move to the Premier League champions, after admitting his frustration at Liverpool’s eighth-placed finish and failure to reach the Champions League.

The Reds were hoping to persuade Skrtel to pen a new contract, but it seems it is Agger who will be first to extend his current deal, after he returned from Euro 2012 ready to negotiate.

“It’s no secret that I’m happy to be in Liverpool. Otherwise, I would not have been there for six years,” he told sporten.dk.

“I have not yet discussed a new contract but if they come with an offer I will surely sit down and talk with them. If they ask, I will listen.”

Alberto Aquilani will also return to Liverpool after failing to agree terms for his release.

The misfit Italian midfielder wanted a free transfer AND a pay-off to leave Anfield, and understandably, the Reds have baulked at that deal.

Rodgers though, wants rid of the Italy international after his failure to settle in the Premier League.

The new boss will negotiate hard in the coming weeks to get his £80,000-plus a week wages off the books.

Not for me. Star performer last season so we should be trying to keep hold of him and keep him and agger at the back with a good back up (and eventual starter in Coates). That said I take you point, if his head is turned and he lacks the loyalty (and he was poor for a few seasons), then I agree...25M to city...and re-invest in more quality players.
A win win situation for me...keep him..great, lose him...get decent wedge in...

We only have a handfull of really good players, Gerrard, Agger, Suarez & Reina. Skittles also comes in to that bracket & we can Ill afford to lose him. It's too early for Coates but in 18 months to 2 years I think he'll be the real thing.

Oh, and I've got about half an hour to get to the airport for my flight to LIVERPOOL so see yis.

Brown Bitter please luv.Just practasing me bar skills.

See Ya

I'd prefer to keep him too, but 20-25 million would go a long way for team-building.

Depends on how Skrtel himself feels about it if the reported interest is indeed accurate.

Why would we sell our player of the year. It's going to take a new centre back 6months to a year to settle in anyway and you might be left with what? Maybe 10 million after you buy the replacement? Would be daft IMO
We can wait for it but I dont want to say we can wait 20 years. If we sit here in four years I think well have won one title Im pretty sure.

No pressure Jurgen!

I really rate Kelly but he seems injury prone. Would be too much pressure on either of them to be first choice centre half with DAgger

And if they're not, you'll get the added bonus of slagging them off endlessly......

I think Antler has it right. Keep him if he wants to stay, sell him if he doesn't.

If we do sell him though, we will definitely need to buy a replacement.

Joleon Lescott went for £24 million if I recall correctly. We should tell them to stick their £20 million (if that's what they're offering).

£30 million please. ;)

you and a couple of others use that line all the time. kelly is a good defender and coatez will only be a partimer for so long. skrtel is good but no big loss of sold since we have other good enough CBs.

Firstly, that line is used because its accurate.

Secondly, if Skittles is sold, we'll only have four centre backs including one on his last legs and two who have barely played there for us yet. Two of our four would be largely untested and it would be an unnecessary risk to hope that neither would struggle in part.

If Skittles goes, he will be replaced.

If we can get 20mill plus I would sell him but not to City or any other team in the EPL. if any foreign team wants to buy him for that amount then sell otherwise he is not for sale.

That Anzhi (SP) club in Russia are also said to be interested.

If he wants to go then let the bidding commence between the two megabucks clubs.

Its high time we were more ruthless when it comes to selling wantaway players.
