alonso wouldn't have been anywhere near our club in the first place if it wasnt for rafa, with all the other world class players. but when he was here you still slagged rafa off. now that's unforgivable lad. and you know it. |

alonso was superb...and in a strange kind of way i think parker has been a poorer(much poorer) version of alonso and if only kenny had signed parker when he had the chance to..him n gerrard work well together. Alonso though is top drawer and lfc still have not replaced him.Him going was a huge blow for lfc...notice how happy torres seems to be playing with him too. |

“In Liverpool, I learned to face problems that back home, in San Sebastián, I had never even thought about,” Xabi remembers now when he reflects back on the move. At that time, Nagore, who had worked in a clothing store in San Sebastián, was working as a costume designer for the movie ¡Aupa Etxebeste!. When filming ended, she moved to Liverpool, where Xabi had been for two months. She began working at a hotel near the center of the city, very close to their house in The Docks. Xabi, meanwhile, was studying for an engineering degree, but abandoned it after three years, just a bit before the birth of their first child. The circumstances surrounding that birth says a lot of the way that Xabi views life. He faced off against his coach, Rafa Benítez, to be able to be present for the birth. “In reality, nothing that serious happened,” he says. “On Saturday, we played against Newcastle, and on Sunday Nagore’s waters broke. On Monday, I had to travel to Milan to play in the Champions and I told the míster (Benitz), that I would join the team after the birth, if he wanted. But he (Benitez) told me he couldn’t wait for me. I told him that I understood, but I would stay in Liverpool no matter what. Benítez never obligated me to go to Milan, he knew that I would have stayed in any case." Things were never to be the same again after that. "I have always tried to do what he (Benitez) asked me to do on the pitch. When the birth of my child happened, I had to take a decision to be with my family because it was an important moment. Last summer when the club proposed that I had to be sold to buy new players it was a difficult moment, but I accepted it as a professional. That moment changed my mind, from that moment it was time for a change." Benitez openly courted Aston Villa's Gareth Barry as Alonso's replacement, (unforgiveable in many Liverpool Supporters' eyes). Taken from “El País Semanal”-Xabi Alonso-unabridged. If that confirmation that there was a bust up over Xabi deciding to stay home when his wife had the baby then i don't know what is, it was awful treatment, and indeed an awful mistake (by Benitez) that Alonso departed, as it was the beginning of the end for 'the míster' (Benitez) at Liverpool Football Club. |

We have to remember what actually happened as fact here: Benitez was questioning Alonso's professionalism because he wanted to stay for his child's birth then it really is a crying shame. It certainly more than hints that there was something in the rumours circulating at the time. That incident clearly was the catalyst for the rift, and it seems the breaking point (for Xabi at least) was Benitez's decision to try to sell him that summer. Nobody expected Benitez would be that cold and to be fair had a right to be annoyed if Xabi did not make up his mind, but nevertheless, the way Benitez went about it all was very unprofessional indeed, especially his 'love-in for Barry at the time. Truth is that Benitez was cold and very single minded when it came to his job so i could see him getting his goatee in a twist when xabi stayed away whilst his child was born. But in Alonso's final season Benitez could not then ask Alonso for loyalty when he clearly wanted to offload him the season before. If a manager wants rid of you your not going to be a. too happy with him and b. feel you have his full confidence moving forward, are you now!? Benitez messed up big time, terrible man-management, (that's where he missed Pako's expertise), he upset Alonso and I don't blame him for leaving at all. He proved Benitez wrong with a sublime, brilliant final season, and then basically thought if you don't want me this season then why should I stay when you now need me now!? That is when i turned against Benitez, my faith in him had gone, and that is what Alonso thought. |

There is no doubt rafa treated alonso rather badly overthe birth of his child which is surprising given his own family values but perhaps he wanted to show there was no favouritism. However in mitigation it has to be remembered that alonso had a rather poor season..and only came back strongly the following year and has remained excellent since. |

All i want is the new Alonso/Pirlo because those kind of players are immense, if Javi Martinez is this kind of player we need do the upmost to get him, these players who can keep the ball and contol the game are priceless ! |

Alonso is a great player, and did very well for us and very well from us. He's also very clever. He managed to desert us without incurring the same wrath as Torres did. Make no mistake, all this talk of bust ups, and him feeling unwanted and being mismanaged are a fantastic distraction from the fact that he left of his own free will, despite being wanted by the fans, the club and the manager. He left and secured a massive pay rise under a more favourable tax regime, and the chance to play for another one of the biggest teams in the world in his home country. I still really like him as a player, and as a person, but I do laugh at how gullible a lot of fans are. |
