Sarcastic Klopp talks about defensive reinforcements in January
Date published: Wednesday 20th December 2017 2:19

Jurgen Klopp was in sarcastic mood on Wednesday as he answered questions at his pre-Arsenal news conference.

Klopp’s men, who face Arsenal on Friday night, have conceded once in four games and have looked more solid after losing 5-0 to Man City in September and conceding five goals in two games against Sevilla in the Champions League.

And Klopp was asked about the recent changes he has made to his defence.

“It’s not really a change, to be honest. The boys needed to be more aware of different situations, all the players, not just defenders,” said Klopp.

“We are a team that is very offensive-orientated, but that doesn’t mean you have to give any space away. The boys do the jobs now much more often.”

He then sarcastically claimed all the problems were down to not adding a defender to his squad in August.

Klopp said: “I learned that defensive problems were because I didn’t sign a player!”

“What, because our defensive record has been good, I don’t need to sign a defensive player or something like this?

“That will never stop, until we do it!

“I love the game, but I don’t think the solution is always to sign a new player. All what we are doing has influence on how I think. That’s how it is.

“Yes (the defensive record) has influence – but I am not sure which way! You will have to wait and see.

“For example, Moreno played a great season then we had Sevilla and people did not hesitate to say ‘that’s why you should have signed a new left back.”

“Wow, I thought, if people said that about you.”

Soon to be five transfer windows and the back four still look average even though we have looked better without the morono ,

That's an amazingly generous, tolerant, comment by your usual standards. The Christmas spirit starting to take over?

Jurgen Klopp makes brazen statement about defending
Date published: Tuesday 26th December 2017 10:10

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he builds a “defending approach” to his tactics as Liverpool manager.

The Anfield boss launched a staunch defence of his side’s rearguard set-up in the wake of leaking three goals in five minutes to slip to a 3-3 draw at Arsenal on Friday.

Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool into a 2-0 lead at the Emirates Stadium, only for Alexis Sanchez, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil all to strike in five minutes and blast Arsenal into an unlikely lead.

Roberto Firmino’s goal salvaged a point for the visitors, but Klopp was still left to bat away questions about his side’s open, attacking game-plan.

“We have an absolutely defending approach,” Klopp said. “We played 4-5-1 and everyone has a responsibility to defend. We can line up quite offensively, player-wise.

“But there’s nobody on the pitch who is not involved in defending.

“That they will cross, that they will shoot, it happens in a football game.

“I want to defend first of all; that’s the basis for everything.

“But the best thing is to defend with 10 offensive players, because then when you have the ball, it’s much more likely that you will score.”

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp refused to lay any blame at Simon Mignolet’s door after the Belgium goalkeeper’s mistake gifted Arsenal their second goal, from Xhaka’s regulation strike.

“We don’t talk about that now,” Klopp said on whether Loris Karius would replace Mignolet for the Boxing Day clash with Swansea at Anfield.

“Everyone saw the mistake. It’s quite difficult to judge because it will definitely never happen again.

“He’s never conceded a goal like that, so you don’t have to make a big thing of it.”

Despite disappointment at surrendering a commanding position in north London, Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last 13 matches in all competitions.

Klopp is not chalking off the results on the calendar, but believes the Reds are maintaining consistency in performance.

“I don’t know how many it is now; I don’t think about or count this,” the German said.

“But I really think performance-wise we are in a really good way; that’s what we need to keep.

“So even when it still feels completely, maximum average, unbelievable not to win at Arsenal, the performance was still good.

“The performance was a team performance. We can’t talk too much about mistakes because there was only one mistake. It’s still only one mistake.

“They scored their goals, and we have to get that, stay consistent, and keep on performing like we did.

“It’s not too easy to play this kind of football for the boys, it’s intense. And to go to Arsenal and to be in a position where we could have scored six or seven goals, seems pretty rare.

“We should have had three points, but we got one. We were the much better side, so that’s something we can take forward.”

I can see where klopp is coming from. He wants every player on the pitch defending when we’ve not got the ball. From firmino to the defence. Why wait for a ball to come into the box when it’s better if it’s stopped before the cross ?

Klopps biggest frustration with me though is his unwillingness to throw certain players who keep failing time after time, basically I’m a fan who wants instant improvement like every other fan, then again what good are they to him if he’s constantly hammering them midway through a season ?

The hardest part to do in football is score goals, that’s one area he’s trying to build first. So far it’s not going too badly. Needs improving more but it’s getting there. The easiest thing to do in football is parking the bus. That’s why so few Brit managers get the top jobs, they’re good at ruining games but not great at winning games. Once klopps got his attacking players in place I’m sure he’ll start adding the defensive players that won’t make those stupid mistakes we keep making. It’s not like we get torn to threads, or are all over the place when attacked. It’s one player switching off at crucial times. Once he gets that part right, we’ll be one hell of a side imo.

We’ve had too many managers who spent fortunes and got nowhere. Klopps building something that can be special. He’s evolving the team as apposed to rebuilding every season. That’s why I have more trust in him than previous managers.

Another clean sheet today, and five in the other end. We have had some nightmare defensive contributions this season; last, too. But we have had a number of pretty good ones, as well.

I’d take what he says with a pinch of salt. He’s a motivator not someone who’ll destroy confidence part way through a season. I’m sure he knows some are just not good enough. Making same mistakes without learning. Against the best attackers one or two are found wanting, including the keeper.

Like I’ve said, the hardest part is to score goals, we score plenty but still need another dimension against parked buses. Maybe he’s sorting that part before his defence ? Certainly without goals you don’t or rarely don’t get three points. Clean sheets without scoring only gets you a point.

Let’s not forget, from the horrendous start we made, we’re only 5 points behind the huge spending moureen. Only -4 goal difference down as well.

Moureen came out moaning he’s not been backed like a big club should back his manager today. What a hypocrite he is.

Key statement by Baz - "Keeping the Moron out" .

Well he came back in and hey presto our defence disappeared again, but most of us would expect that .

With Matip playing like a giraffe trying to cross a frozen lake , we are in the mire , especially with a Collander in goal.
