((Let me know if anything needs to be changed at all! =) ))

It was definitely summer… somewhere. Occasionally the High Reaches felt warm. It was not one of those days. Not that Katara minded much- the water could be whatever temperature it wanted, she loved it all the same. Wearing nothing but her white linen undergarments and hair-loopies, she swam out to a comfortable depth. Peacefulness washed against her very soul, the edges of her fraying temper cooled as the iciness travelled down her fingers and toes. The press of water against her cheek was her mother’s caress, the weight upon her shoulders was her father’s comforting hugs, and her arms were heavy as she embraced Sokka… It was comfort, and family, and life.

As the sun poked its head out from behind fluffy white clouds of stupendous innocent, a glint on the far shore caught Katara’s eye. The lake was fairly deserted at this early hour of the morning, so the young woman swam towards it, cutting a quick pace through the water.

It was an egg. Katara was careful to let the water drip off of her body away from the half-buried treasure, wringing her hair out as she contemplated her options. Her body was not warm, but the egg certainly needed warmth if it was going to hatch. Also, why was there only one? What had happened to the rest of the clutch? How had it survived so long? All questions that she couldn’t answer with a quick glance around. She flicked the water from her arms and hands, then sponged what remained of it from her chest and neck. She would have to be quick. Moving dirt and sand away, she uncovered the gleaming shell, then clutched it tight against her, hoping she might give it what warmth she had.

The jar, packed with borrowed sand, rocked. Katara squeaked, dropping her sewing as she rushed from the bench and to the low-lit hearth. She scooped away the sand, the egg beneath it spidery with cracks. With a gentle touch, she tipped the egg into her hands as it continued to wiggle.

It was a breathtaking sight. She was glad she had the small craft room to herself for the night as she watched over it. There were forgotten sandwiches still on the bench- a dinner she’d put aside in favour of her work. At least now her single-mindedness would prove useful. Sokka would be proud.

The wriggling and shaking continued for several minutes until the shell actually started to break away. Large pieces fell into the jar as the little bundle snorted and finally sputtered free.

It seemed to take an eternity- but maybe that was because excitement levels had reached over 9000. Katara could have sworn she felt electricity dancing in her fingertips. Each time a piece of eggshell fell away, her heart stopped. This was it. An unforgettable moment- and… ah! There it was! A head! And those were its wings!

Katara whipped round, pulling the plate haphazardly towards her- dropping a few unhappy tubers in the process- and proffered the food to the goopy hatchling. “There there, little one, come and eat this delicious food. It will do you good.” Her voice was gentle and soothing, and the garnet- for there was no doubt if the beauty of its hide was anything to judge by- sniffed her hand before taking a piece and scarfing it down. “Wait- smaller bites! Don’t choke!” Her heart beat painfully in her chest as fear and worry also exploded there.

She pulled off smaller pieces, realising it was her responsibility to help the baby pace herself. The tentative mental bonds seemed to pull at her mind as Impression was made, and her spirit lifted with warmth and a maternal affection…

“You really are beautiful.” Katara commented to herself, once the flitter was asleep in her eyes. She had rubbed the goop off of the firelizard’s head, focusing especially on those sensitive eyeridges and headknobs. “How about… Temperance… or Lady Temperance. You definitely deserve a title worthy of your beauty.” She giggled- a girlish, youthful sound that she swore she hadn’t made since she turned seven. Lady Temperance seemed to nod, though it might just have been her shifting slightly in her sleep.

She couldn’t wait to show Sokka and Wintrath! They would both love her too- hopefully.
