Blackmail, or something [Open]

((This can either be a normal open thread--someone wanders in, sees Eolet, and starts chatting (she may be at the meeting place early, anyways)--or it can include her knowing some small detail, possibly a secret, of your character's. If you want to do that, just tell me what the 'secret' is!))

Eolet knew of the state of affairs as well as anyone--better than anyone, actually, as far as she was concerned. She knew everything, after all. Granted, she did have a large amount of contacts, all feeding her information, from the most important to the most casual. No detail was unimportant, though some details might be inane...which was a completely different story.

The casual comings and goings of the average person wasn't interesting to her. The opportunities afforded by these, however, were rich. Subtle inferences could be made from even the smallest detail, which meant, of course, blackmail. Blackmail meant, naturally, more resources for information, and potentially for other favors as well.

This is boring, Ambreth remarked, petulant as always.

Eolet crossed her arms. While she waited in the shadows of the lower caverns, in a less-traveled area, waiting, her dragon lay on the floor of the Weyrling barracks, thrashing and rolling on the ground in a fit. You aren't here with me. Go do something else, Eolet replied to her dragon, annoyance flickering in her eyes.

Still! I want you to oil me! And spend time with me! Don't you want to spend time with your lovely Ambreth? Don't you love me? Hey! Are you ignoring me? I'm too pretty to ignore. The elite deserve special treatment, don't we?

Eolet continued to ignore her dragon.

Stop that. I'm serious! Eo!

Eolet tuned her dragon out entirely. Ambreth was saying unimportant things, and was not currently with her. She loved her dragon, she really did. Even if 'love' was a foreign concept, and perhaps too strong a word. Still, Eolet had to learn to compartmentalize. Today, she was here to ask someone about a particularly juicy detail she'd discovered about them. It wasn't particularly hard to discover, if one knew where to look, and which gossip queens to listen to, but it still would, ideally, get this person under her thumb, in one way or another. She wondered which approach she should go with, idly, as she waited.

A note had been slipped under their door, simply stating a location in the lower caverns, as well as a time. Underneath, she'd written I'd like to meet, in her most generic print.

Majima never did anything half-assed.

He was entertained by the note under his door, and he decided he was going to humor whoever decided to try this. He was the one people went to when they wanted to blackmail someone, and so he put on his best wherhide jacket and set out with Majimask at his side.

This boring. Majimask grunted, moving alongside his human with the same grace as a brick. It didn't make him any less intimidating, and that was all he needed to be.

It'll be fun. The one-eyed man replied, strolling his way to the supposed meeting location, and he was not impressed with what he saw.

A weyrling.

"Oh, this is going to be fun." Majima muttered before his signature, whershard-crazy smile graced his lips. "Weeeeell~ what have we here?"

One didn't just jump right into the blackmail. Not that it was blackmail, so much as...an information trade. She'd keep information to herself, in exchange for learning more. And perhaps, she would even entwine herself in Majima's little network. Not that she'd be especially loyal, but she imagined it could be an opportunity unlike any other. Naturally, she knew a few things about it--Eolet made a habit of learning things like that--but not nearly as much as she'd like. She felt confident, though this waned a little as the man approached, grinning. Perhaps the man was a bit too unpredictable...but no. She had already thought it through, and it was time for a bit of risky behavior.

Her face, a stone mask, didn't betray her misgivings, as she nodded to Majima. "Thank you for meeting with me." He'd brought his wher. Unfortunate, but she'd assumed he might. Still, even he couldn't get away with a brutal murder, so she assumed she had little to fear from Majimask. Especially not given that she was a weyrling, now. Ambreth was the future of the Weyr, she supposed, in an unfortunate way--and she could not be murdered so easily.

Still, it would do to be cautious.

"An honor to finally meet the infamous Majima," she remarked. "A man of many talents." She'd like to get right to the point, but she needed to be careful about how she brought it up. A man like Majima was dangerous, and Eolet did not have the prestige to avoid his reach. Still, she'd let him guide the conversation, at first. Perhaps he knew why she'd invited him. Perhaps he didn't.

Booooooooring, Ambreth remarked, before returning to a sullen silence.

It seemed like Majima was right in front of Eolet in the blink of an eye, uncomfortably close with that wild eye on her. No fear. No hesitation. He didn't even look visibly armed. He he would be a fool to not be prepared, and he was always prepared. Always and forever. Majimask did not move, the wher watching cautiously and very carefully.

"Flattery only works on goldriders, weyrliiiing~" He let his voice change in pitch and whirl like he was unhinged. It was intimidating, and he knew it. He was going to just work it, and go as hard and as wild as he had to. He just had to be.

This had to prove worth his time.

"What do you think you have over me, hmm? Are you going to say you have something to make me powerless~?" Majima grinned even wider, his wher shifting his weight.

((Half awake--may edit later, or just leave it, but figured I'd get it out either way...))

For the first time in ages, Eolet wasn't confident in her decision. Maybe this was a bad idea. Majima was suddenly in her face, smiling and looking completely unhinged. Still, she told herself, he wouldn't risk killing her here and now. So, she simply looked at him with her cold, neutral expression, as if she wasn't impressed in the slightest. One had to stand their ground with people like Majima. "Flattery is empty. I admire your work." And that much was true. She had to stick to her guns, now--there was no backing out, no changing her mind. She could do nothing but stick to her decision, and believe in it.

"What makes you think I have something like that?" She asked. She hadn't said anything like that in her note, and it would do to be cautious. As much as she hated improvising, having several potential outcomes planned was certainly her style. One of those outcomes was pretending she'd never intended to blackmail him, but merely to use him for information. Another was to ask for employment. There were many possibilities. "On the contrary--I simply had a curiosity to ask you about. Nothing of note--trivial, even."

She spoke as though the detail were, in fact, trivial. "You visited with Alayna in the fireheights when she came for the conclave. Do you mind my asking why?" Eolet watched his expression carefully. If she could blackmail him with it, that reaction would tell. It could be a semi-innocent question, though--a simple question of someone who, perhaps, even had a reputation of sticking her nose where it didn't belong.

It was still a risk. He might see through her, though according to her calculations, the chance of that was slim. It was also a risk if it was something worth blackmailing him over. If he got angry or defensive, if she had found something, it could result in unforeseen results. But she'd planned for even that. Eolet reached out to Ambreth, reminding her that she was to scream to the Weyr if anything happened--but not unless Eolet told her to. Ambreth grumbled in response, but of course, she was ready to cry out if anything went wrong. Besides, her rider being attacked would be a way to get people to give her attention and fawn over her...probably.

Majima's grin seemed to get wider. More unhinged.

And he laughed in a voice that seemed far too high-pitched for his features. Unnerving, and unsettling, and he was more than glad of it. This was so entertaining. His wher did not think so, Majimask snorting with annoyance in his eyes. The wher was bored, and Majima was having fun.

"Is that what you think you have? Really? I was on patrol, little weyrling." He couldn't help the giggle that came from his mouth. "Do you blow everything out of proportion?"

Despite her wavering convictions, Eolet kept her voice steady, her expression neutral. She'd come this far. If he was lying about it--which he seemed to be--she might have gotten something. "Patrol?" She asked, tilting her head, as if she didn't quite understand. "If you were on patrol, why did you stay with her so long?" Eolet said the words carefully, their eyes cold and piercing as they met Majima's unhinged stare, unflinching. Bravery was foolish, but when one was backed into a corner--even if of one's own volition--showing fear or backing down had no purpose. She wasn't trying to provoke him, but rather, show him that he couldn't frighten her.

"I did say that my question was trivial. I did not say that it was the only reason I had asked to meet. Still...is it too much to ask for you to sate my curiosity?"

I don't like this. Ambreth was uncharacteristically nervous about this. She didn't want anything to happen to her handler. For once, she didn't want the pair to have attention. At least not this bad man's attention. And Eolet wanted to get involved with him? Majima's organization was clearly below them, but Eolet's thoughts churned, and her decisions began to take form, solidify.
