K'osh listened and considered. The sister in all likelihood would have gone on to impress another garnet or some other equally objectionable mutant, so no loss there. Strange that she hadn't been chosen at all, but one never knew about commoner families; some folks had that ineffable something and some folks didn't. Even among twins, one might be selected and the other left behind.

"Even were there room, your sister wouldn't have been taken," K'osh pointed out. "Only those with the potential may stand as candidates, you know that as well as I. Otherwise, we'd be bringing in hordes of people with no hope of impressing, straining the weyr's resources without reason."

"But surely you can go see her at any time. I would imagine that was one of the first places you visited after learning to go between, no?" K'osh took just one more tiny sip of wine. It was so delightful on the palate.

"I know," Lily said sadly, "And it would be very disappointing for all the ones who just waited and waited and waited. But I do know of at least one greenrider who failed every Search attempt and later Impressed from the stands and there are candidates who age out It's NOT infallible."

It was the best they had and they tried to give everyone a chance, from drudge to Blooded. It didn't mean it was perfect. Or that she couldn't dream that Petunia would also have Impressed if she'd only been allowed to try.

"She doesn't want to see me anymore," Lily admittedly, head hanging forlornly as she fiddled with the edge of her jacket, "I asked to come but...she blames me, for leaving her behind. I go home to visit my parents but she's always somewhere else when I come it seems."

K'osh took one more teeny sip of wine. He was starting to feel relaxed, and why shouldn't he? He was in his own weyr, with his own dragon right outside, and directing the conversation on his own terms.

"How many years has it been? Surely there's some point after which, when someone doesn't want to see you, you let it go and get on with your life." Like he'd let his dreams at Benden go, and had come here for a new future.

'What color did she want to impress, if she had the chance? And you, what color did you want? A gold? A green?" K'osh had the feeling that this was not exactly where he had intended his line of questioning to go, but he shrugged off the concern from the part of his mind as yet unclouded by alcohol.

"Four," Lily murmured into her cup, stiffening a little at the harsh tone, "But she's my sister. You never give up on family. Don't you have a family? She has a SON I've never met."

It wasn't right. Maybe it would have been different if she'd been allowed to come. She could have settled at the weyr, even if she didn't Impress, and the gulf might not have yawned between them.

"I don't know what she wanted. Gold I presume. It's what she used to dream of Impressing," Lily murmured. It was a weird question. Most candidates simply wanted to be CANDIDATES. Not to ride anything specific, "And I just wanted a dragon I could love who loved me. I got that. But I'm very happy with my garnet. Eridieth is wonderful."

"I do but we're not close. My father was a casualty of Threadfall, as will someday be the fate of us all, I suppose." K'osh folded both hands behind his head and looked off into the distance. "My mother and sister are still living and in good health but we don't speak much. I was fostered out at a young age, as is traditional," he emphasized the word slightly, "in the weyr, so we didn't have close ties."

He pulled his hands into his lap and folded them. "But surely you can't mean to say that you are happy with..." He wanted to say "with that garnet" but even in his ever more befuddled mind he knew that was the wrong thing to say. "...With the way things have turned out for dragonfolk over the last so many Turns? You must have seen it as clearly as I have: more and more mutations, dragons born with defective eyesight, even with missing limbs." K'osh took another swig of wine and with exaggerated care put the mug back down on the small table between them.

"That sounds very sad. If I ever have a son...I don't care what the weyr wants. He'll stay with me always," Lily said with stubborn dreaminess. Her precious baby would always know he was wanted, weyr, craft or hold. She would be his mother and Eridieth would be his family, "Love is what gives us a reason to do anything at all. I think it's very backwards of the weyr to try to take it from us."

People fought for the things and ones they cherished. She loved her dragon with all her heart and soul. It didn't mean she had nothing more to give. She could love her child and weyrmate, when she found one, without caring any less about her Eridieth.

Her Eridieth didn't want an empty life for her. Lily was sure she wanted her to have people to love. As she wished for her Eridieth to.

"I don't see any problem with it," Lily said at K'osh' words, a flash of anger in her eyes, "Dragons are dragons. Nothing will stop them from being born. They fight and live and love the same as any other. Why shouldn't Pern have room for those who are a bit different?"

"The weyr isn't taking anything from you," K'osh said, frowning. "It gives us freedom: freedom to choose those we want, when we want, for as long as we want. It gives our children the freedom to learn other ways of being raised, and know other children than just their own siblings. Surely you don't prefer the straight and narrow ways of the hold, with their arranged political marriages and their younger sons and daughters that are considered useful pawns at best and a burden at worst?"

"And surely you must see that dragons born with infirmities are more at risk during Threadfall. Nothing against them of course," K'osh waved a hand as though to indicate how generous he was being in this statement, "but they simply aren't as up to the task. And this puts every other dragon in the wing at risk!"

He leaned towards Lily with both elbows on the table, making sure he didn't knock over the wine mug by accident. "It's just not safe: not for them, and not for us!"

How much this rider deserved to be included in 'us' was a bit of a question, but K'osh was on a roll now. "Pern must be protected at all costs. At all costs, don't you see?"
