Miloresh hadn't been down to Sick Bay before. Xe was appalled at the number of people who were here being treated; most of Moonshot Wing was down here, plus a few other folks. One of those other folks was xir reason for being here; Jae had gotten threadscored on one leg, which would make it hard for her to get around for a few days, if xe understood correctly.

Miloresh finally poked xir head in the right room. "Hey, Jae, how are you feeling? I brought some numbweed and some tunnelsnake meat," xe indicated the container of salve and the pile of chopped meats on a tray in xir hands. "For your flit, you know. Not the numbweed. Just the meat! How is your leg?" Xe looked at her with some concern, hoping the injury wasn't too bad; xe couldn't really tell with the dressing they'd put on it.

Jae had been so good to xem when xe'd first come to her at the storerooms, plus loaning her flit more than once for letters to Riku. A visit was the least xe could do.

The sick bay was loud and crowded. Almost all of Jae's wingmates now called it their temporary home. But in good news- she finally had gotten some paperwork to occupy her. It hadn't even been very hard. D'ark had even hugged her as he literally pushed the stack at her. It was nice to be busy and appreciated.

She was busy scratching away and humming lightly to herself when she heard someone come in. She looked up with a smile. Visitors were always nice. This paperwork couldn't fill a WHOLE day and the infirmary was not a terribly interesting place to be a patient.

"Oh, Miloresh. Hello," she said, a bit confused as to why xe had come. She'd helped him out a few times as she would any other candidate but nothing particularly noteworthy that she could recall. She put the paperwork aside anyway, "Thank you. I don't think I can take much more numbweed but I'm sure Midnight will appreciate the snack. What can I do for you?"

Most people wanted something or other from her which was the way she preferred it. It was nice to be useful.

Miloresh set the container of numbweed down on the ledge near Jae's cot. "Ah, well, perhaps you'll want it for later?" Xe put the tray of chopped meats down next to it. "I just wanted to see if you're ok. When I heard the news, you know, that you'd been injured..." Xe gestured to her leg.

"I guess the healers are keeping you pretty comfortable?" She did look like she wasn't in any pain, which was something at least. "But how can people be expecting you to be doing work when you should be concentrating on getting well?" Xe was staring now at the large pile of papers in xir lap. "What is all that stuff anyways?"

Jae chuckled and shook her head in amusement. She was one of the lucky ones and knew it, "It's just a little threadscore. Trust me- I got off light. You should see what the rest of the wing looks like. The healers are taking good care of me but I'm itching to be out of here. That's what these papers are about. Sure technically they're the paperwork that keeps our wing running...but mostly I'm bored and the few riders not in here are being worked to exhaustion. It's a win-win. But it can wait."

She leaned back. She hadn't seen that many people who weren't also infirmary bound since Threadfall. Well...except D'ark, but he mostly just whined about being expected to pull his weight and hovered over that weyrmate of his. Miloresh seemed like much better company, "So...tell me what's been happening in this weyr of ours. The Healers won't share the gossip. Some nonsense about upsetting me."

As if Jae was so fragile. Faranth forbid.

Miloresh grinned happily to see Jae in such a good mood. That surely bode well for her speedy recovery. "I'm so glad you're doing well! You just let me know if there's anything you need though. Schedules are a bit upended while they shuffle wings around and everything, so I have a little free time if you want me to bring you anything your flit can't carry."

Xe winked at her conspiratorially and leaned in a little closer. "But you want news about the weyr? Did you hear about the assassination attempt on Junior Weyrleader Schneizel?" Xe'd retold this story often enough tht xe felt xe could recount it with only a little of the dread xe'd felt at the time. If xe ever had grandchildren, this would be a story to pass down to them.

"Thanks but I'm hoping they let out me out soon. That's what I really need. To stretch my legs and DO something," Jae grumbled. Kemma would be in longer as would most of her wing so she'd be back. But she could bring them soup and tea and other things that promoted healing. Who said saving her sanity meant she had to abandon the rest of them?

Jae snorted and grinned, "It hasn't been that long and I don't live under a rock. I still can't believe it was DIKOI of all people. I've known that man all of my life. He works in the Creche caring for CHILDREN for Faranth's sake! I never could have imagined he was a MURDERER."

Which obviously meant she needed to up her snooping while she was in here and had nothing but time. She should know these things, forsk it! It was HER weyr! "I heard you were there too and very brave. But you shouldn't have seen that. That kind of thing was meant to have died with Golre."

And yet they'd had three successful murders before this attempt. Obviously something still needed to change.

"We-ell," said MIloresh thoughtfully, "I could bring you a few boxes of stuff that have accumulated in the storerooms for sorting. If you really really need things to do. Just kidding! How is your," xe stumbled for the name of her dragon, "your Zappath? If he's ok, maybe we can sneak you out of here long enough to get you some fresh air on his back. How long until they check in on you again?"

Miloresh was relieved in spite of xemself that xe didn't have to retell the assassination story. "You knew Dikoi that long? He seemed kind of creepy to me to be caring for kids. but okay, I only saw him the one time and maybe not under the best of circumstances." Miloresh could even joke about the whole thing now. A little bit.

At jae's remark about being brave, Miloresh blushed and looked at xir boots, those same boots xe'd had in hand when xe arrived at the weyr, though with double soles on now. Xe hadn't felt in the least bit brave during the attack. And not any more so right now, if it came right down to it. "Thanks but the other people there, they were the brave ones. The Junior Weyrleader stood right up there like he could take on a whole group of assassins single-handed, and then there was the woman who threw the knife, too."

"I think I need to know more about some of the people here, and the history too. For my own safety if nothing else! It seems like everyone knows about this Golre but me. My pen pal not-quite-roommate mentioned something very general about torture and evil but... how does someone like that get to be weyrwoman here? What happened? How did people get rid of her?"

"Is it wrong that I'd actually take you up on that?" Jae laughed, eyes bright and clear and as sharp as ever, "My hands are fine and itching to work. It's just my leg that got scored."

She grinned at xem as she held out a hand to be helped up. She didn't call for the healers but even if they saw her...What were they going to do? Yell at her? Shards, they probably would approve this little outing if they thought it'd get her to sleep quietly, "By which you mean you want to go for a dragon ride. Sure- I'll take you to see Zappath. I doubt that big blue lump's moved at all since I got incarcerated."

Jae snorted at Miloresh' denials, "Schneizel's a war veteran. Doubt it's the first time he's been on the wrong end of a knife. And Anaiya's tough as nails. Doesn't mean you weren't brave too. You could have run. Come on, let's get moving and I'll tell you all about Golre. She had a long reign so...it's not a quick story."

And she didn't want the healers to return and ruin her escape. Because she was close to crawling out of her skin with boredom.

Miloresh beamed. It had been a long time since xe'd snuck someone out under the noses of their caretakers for an unauthorized journey. Memories of that night came flooding back, memories of clandestine plans and forbidden rendezvous and, above all, success! Xe grasped Jae's hand and pulled her gently to her feet, then offered her a shoulder to lean on for the walk out of Sick Bay. Xe made a grab for the container of numbweed on the way out; she might feel like she didn't need it but you never knew.

But, xem, on dragonback too? "I wasn't thinking of me riding too, but, yes, sure, that's great! Then I can meet your Zappath at last." Xe tried not too speak too loudly in xir enthusiasm. It wouldn't do for the healers to show up now to complain about xem being too noisy.

"Now if anyone sees us and asks, you're just doing slow walking exercises to try to get the leg back in use. Unless it's the healer that knows all about your injury, in which case ... just tell them we'll be right back and keep walking!" Miloresh laughed with delight as xir long-unused scheming and plotting muscles came back into play. "And you can tell me all about Golre once we get in the air."

Jae grabbed her cane as they left. Just in case. And took her first breath of clear, non-sick bay air in far, far too long. Oh thank Faranth. She grinned and said, "Now what have I told you about Zappath? He's...unusual."

Unusual? Yes that was the right euphemism. Unusual and not the sort of thing anyone should walk into unprepared. At least Miloresh wasn't a lady. In which case...she'd have had to veto this whole idea. Because Zappath could not be trusted around females of any species.

Ever.

Miloresh nodded. "The cane! Of course, without that our explanation will look pretty silly, won't it?"

Xe padded quickly and quietly with Jae out of Sick Bay. So far so good! Now, they had to get to her dragon, or her dragon to them. "I'm thinking that having Zappath show up here isn't going to be the best, where's a good landing place? And let's not stand around here to get noticed!"

Miloresh remembered being told some things about Zappath when xe'd come to get clothes from the storeroom. That was the first time xe'd had any sort of in-depth conversation about mutations and dragons. "Zappath has only one front limb, isn't that what you said? And fixed color eyes, I remember wondering if they still whirl like other dragons' do. Dragon eyes are so interesting. There's something about that gaze. It just pulls you right in."

"We'll head up to my weyr first. Need to get his straps on," Jae explained with a grin as she grabbed her cane. Shards it was rockier around here. Not so easy to balance, "And I need to make sure he's not hosting sleepovers with every green dragon and hot lady in the weyr."

Jae nodded at Miloresh' description, "He's also shiny. No...I don't know why. No...he doesn't seem to care. About any of it. But the biggest thing you need to know...Zappath will flirt with anything female. You he'll probably ignore. Because...not a lady."

Nonbinary people tended to be exempt from Zappath's...thing...fortunately, "And me he mostly listens to but...If we pass any greens...I'm sorry."

"Are we, I mean you, going to be able to get up there to your weyr easily? With your leg and all, I mean. I can run and get the straps if you tell me where they are, but you need to stay out of sight."

"Although," Miloresh gulped, "maybe I shouldn't be the one to tell your dragon to send his lady friends home, if he uh."

"Let's just go." Xe stepped up xir pace as much as xe dared, given the rockiness of the ground and Jae's leg.

"If he decides to.. why would he flirt with a human? Anyways, if he decides to flirt with me, that's easy. I just say no thanks." Surely that would be sufficient? What would Miloresh do when faced with an insistent randy dragon? Xe preferred not to think about it.

"I don't know why Zappath does anything," Jae said with a roll of her eyes as she started walking up the slope. Yes it made her leg ache. No she was not going to EVER admit she couldn't walk up to her own weyr. It would be fine. She would be fine. Miloresh and Zappath could always rescue her, "My theory is he picked up on my attraction to human females and started mimicking it because it irritates me. Although why he flirts with whers...A mystery to all."

There was in fact a green in Zappath's weyr and a quite pretty one, who was sitting there and giggling as Zappath plied her with outrageous compliments. Jae fixed her a solid glare and said firmly, "Out. How many times have I told you Zappath? No bringing your lady friends home."

I can't help it that they're beautiful. And adore me, Zappath said dryly as the green left. He didn't even glance at Miloresh as he said, I wasn't expecting you home so early.

"I'm not talking to you," Jae said as she knelt awkwardly over a wooden chest to hunt for her riding straps. It put her leg at an uncomfortable angle but she'd deal. This was her weyr. She was an able-bodied adult ready to fight thread again and get out of that forsking infirmary.

Miloresh couldn't have heard correctly. "He flirts with whers? What in the world? They don't.. i mean.. they can't physically... can they?" The idea was horrifying.

Miloresh stopped and stared as they entered Jae's weyr. The two dragons were at least only in the talking stage, thank goodness Jae and xe hadn't interrupted them in the middle of something more serious. The green was lovely enough to look at, but Zappath, now he was something else. A deep deep blue in color, and yet shiny like a bronze or a gold, his eyes glowed red even while he was chattering away to the object of his affections. So the red didn't indicate anger, then. So strange!

Miloresh wasn't sure of the protocol in these situations; should xe greet Zappath? Wait for a break in the dragon conversation and greet them both? Give them some modicum of privacy? This question was answered for xem as Jae ordered the green out.

"Greetings, Zappath, it is nice to meet you," xe took the opportunity to say, and then noticed Jae struggling over a chest of clothes. Xe hastened over to her.

"Here now, I'll get that. What are you thinking, stressing your leg like that?" Miloresh gently but firmly removed Jae's hands from the gear so she'd be able to stand upright, and began holding out items one at a time. "Tell me which things you need. This?"
