"I've never been asked if I was a siren before," Khareesh mused, fingers happily entwined with Tide's as they all walked. "Rather not my element, I'm afraid. I am a child of the wild winds and the open sky, not the waters. My kind are generally referred to as genasi -- anywhere between a quarter and a half elemental in some bizarre interbreeding with various mundane humanoids, though where I'm personally from that's ancient history and we're mostly a...series of independent species by now."

"You talk a lot," Shrayla observed from her position ranging alongside the group. She wasn't speaking loudly, but she didn't really need to, not for Khareesh to hear her.

"Air genasi are the most talkative of our kind," Khareesh agreed amicably, shrugging one shoulder in response. "I also talk a whole lot more when I'm nervous."

"This. This is why I told you to stay back."

Posted Image

"What does that even have to do with anything?"

Amateurs.

Shrayla abruptly drew the North Wind, launching the resultant arrow up into a tree that paced the meadow they trekked through, the arrow quivering in the branch where it had stuck. Between the feet of a very startled young woman who probably thought she was invisible in the foliage. The arrow was just Shrayla's way of saying hello. Yes, I know you're there.

She repeated this exercise a few times, dropping arrows beneath or beside several people who were obviously trying to be covert. If they were friendly, then it was a friendly greeting. If they weren't, it was a statement that there would be no surprise ambush.

"You keep talking, you keep signaling potential hostiles to our position, you drown out ambient sounds that could be the difference between life and death for us." Shrayla's ears rolled front, back, and sideways, deftly picking out background noise behind the party chatter.

She'd had practice with this, after all. Deekin had talked a lot too, and then when she'd picked up Valen and Nathyrra...the banter had been hilarious, of course, but in the Underdark, it had also almost gotten them killed more than once. Dumb dog had learned how to be alert, how to filter sound.

Damn, but she missed Deekin. And Valen. And Nathyrra. ...and even her old classmates, up to and including Xanos, even if he did speak of himself in the third person and have ambitions of ruling the world, or at least a kingdom.

A few more arrows told a few more folks that she knew they were there.

"Be that as it may." Shrayla fired again, beside a very convincing bush-that-wasn't. "Pleasure to meet you, Gwydion, Tide." Now that she had names for them! "I'm Shrayla, though you've no doubt already learned that. I get into trouble a lot."

Khareesh snorted.

"Biter of archangels, puncher of bronzeriders, bane of Harpers. Granted, the latter two deserved it, but..."

"Keep talking, genasi. I could very easily land one of these arrows right in your ass. And I could heal the damage, too, so the fear of crippling you isn't going to stand in the way of temptation."

"...right. Shutting up now."

Keldos softly chuckled.

To be fair, he couldn't help himself, as Khareesh listed off Shrayla's accomplishments. Mostly the 'biter of Archangels' part. Especially when he was said Archangel. And likely said werewolf heard said Archangel's quiet laugh, at something that he had told her before he held no ill will about and in fact thought it both a good idea at the time and in looking back as something rather humorous. Very few could actually say they had gotten teeth into him and the end result hadn't been their utter demise (most of those having been fiends Keldos had been in battle with).

Seriously, her hands had been full at the time. What else was she to do?

Gwydion laughed as he watched her launch arrows at people. "Oh, I'd never guess that you get into trouble. And what does anything have to do with anything? I've traveled in realms no bigger than your thumb and realms so big that the comprehension of them would actually make one go mad. At that point.... Relation kinda goes out the window. But don't worry if you get into trouble, then we will get swimmingly." He said, directing his next comment to Khareesh. "And there is nothing wrong with being talkative. I'm talkative. And I've made it this far. Not completely in one piece, but I made it." He said, placing a hand over his mouth and yawning. "And the pleasures all mine Shrayla." The way he bounced from topic to topic might be a little rapid fire. Gwydion didn't see a point in answering everything in order, just as long as things got answered. He often spoke fast enough to answer any one's questions. That lead to irritation in comrades before, so he hoped it was well received here. "Drawing attention? Well, I'd say we are not an inconspicuous band of people here. Plus, more people just means more fun down the road. Or as you might put it. More trouble." He said, ending with a slight grin.

The arrows had some...Interesting effects. Lilinum thought about telling Shrayla to knock it off, but decided against it. What good would it do? It was obvious that the werewolf was missing them on purpose and really, those that were mad thankfully noticed Lilinum and Andreiw before they decided that taking on the group was a good idea. Andreiw had no problem telling off the werewolf, even about Khareesh's constant chatter. "Will you please stop shooting at everything that moves? What were you raised by? Wolves? Ow!"

That was Lilinum, punching in the side. Her way of saying to be nice to their new allies or she might just remind him the hard way who could breath underwater and who couldn't.

Tide meanwhile was a bit surprise. "Who did you punch?" Tide was sure it wasn't her. While she was technically a bronze rider (bronze mottle), she was pretty sure she would remember getting punched. And considering Khareesh had said the punch was well deserved, she also doubted it was the one other bronze rider she knew (A'lan). From what she had seen of him, he rarely deserved a punch. Though that was very few meetings.

Looks like Tide's problem was overthinking. Better than chatting a mile a minute and annoying a vampyre.

Though to be fair, Andreiw wasn't that hard to annoy.

"Finally! Your voice is-" This time it was Tide that delivered the jab to his side. Though she immediately turned red and started to apologize for it.

"Oh! I am so-" Lilinum stopped that with a laugh though and a grin.

"Don't worry about it. I'm surprised Shrayla hasn't shot another arrow into him yet." Ignoring his protest, she paused by a large tree. The type whose roots could make small shelters. "Alright. Everyone, this is one of many entrances to the base. They are scattered throughout Flare, though they all eventually converge onto one." Looking at Keldos and Raferties, she studied them for several long moments before nodding. "If you guys could possibly tuck in your wings some more, you should fit. It is a bit tight, so hopefully none of you are claustrophobic. If you are...I got another way in. You just probably wouldn't like it very much as it involves...A high fall."

"Can I push the other talkative one in? At least that one made sense. He doesn't." Andreiw jerked a thumb at Gwydion and was rewarded with a glare from Tide. "What?"

"Stop picking on my friends." Tide decided that the history books did get one thing right about Andreiw. He was a bit of a jerk. Though she suppose it was only fair considering that he was leading a rebellion she knew was doomed to fail. That had to be hard.

"Sorry. I'll try to leave your boyfriends alone in the future." Andreiw was about ready to add more but saw how Tide went completely red and started to sputter and wave her free hand about and just looked like she was so lost at what to say and do. Not to mention he could see the tears. He hadn't realized he had hit a mild nerve with her. Quickly backtracking, he raised up his hands in a peace gesture. "Look. Please don't do that. I didn't mean anything by it. I'll leave them be okay?"

"Good going." Lilinum just shook her head at Andreiw who at least looked sheepish about his actions now. It probably didn't help that this strange girl reminded them both of what they could not find. It was...Unsettling a bit.

Meanwhile, Raferties would be discovering something in this dream reality. Something that would prove highly useful. So long as the person had the mental strength and clarity to pull it off to begin with.

He would feel, as he kept walking, a light weight on his wings. Feather light (heh...), and almost non existent, it wouldn't completely solidified till he and the rest of the group had stopped. But once they did, the weight would finally come to life so to speak. Heavy and real as only something from reality, would be the wing guards he had lost so long ago. Not the replicas. Oh no. These would be the original ones. The ones he had lost when he fled Solaris' heaven. They would be back and just as real as anything.

So yes. It was a dream, but one that was incredibly real. As only a truly illogical field produced dream could be. This would be both an advantage and a disadvantage as the group would learn. But for now, it brought Raferties something back he had thought he had lost. That was enough for now.

Shrayla's bark of laughter was humorless and bitter. "I was exactly raised by wolves. Wolves that would have torn your covert agents from those hiding places and eaten their hearts. You're lucky I'm trying to be a good dog. But go ahead, keep being the north-bound end of a south-bound ogre and see how long that lasts."

Andreiw was much like the Mae'virr soldiers of the rebellion against the Valsharess in that he annoyed the ever-loving hell out of Shrayla and only the presence of a mitigating authority (Lilinum) prevented her from gagging him to make his company a little less...well, annoying.

Tide was a welcome distraction, however. The topic of the question was slightly less welcome, because Dumb Dog was still in the proverbial doghouse with Weyrwoman Sandasa about that, but Drogan always had encouraged Shrayla to get good at owning up to her screw-ups.

"I don't know if you've met P'dan or his bronze Leomonth," the ranger sighed after a brief pause, her voice remaining as soft and flat as it had been when she'd delivered her threat to Andreiw. Drogan had taught her honesty, not inflection, so she was often guilty of monotone. "Now, the Weyr has a trade relationship with the village. Supplies for protection, this I understand. Makes perfect sense. But P'dan was extorting luxuries for personal gain on the side, so I broke his skull. ...Sandasa still isn't happy with me about that."

"No kidding. Hard to take proper legal action when a vigilante has gotten there first," Khareesh supplied, though his tone was more sympathetic than critical.

He'd actually met P'dan.

P'dan routinely made Khareesh's life a living hell. The man was an ass of the first order, had a Thing about tormenting Mottle riders as if their dragons were somehow inferior.

Then again, P'dan hadn't really fixated on Khareesh until Myth had beaten Leomonth in a contest of speed and agility. Khareesh wasn't sure why that warranted such reaction, though. Blues, both Mottle and not, were faster than Bronzes, both Mottle and not, by design. Bronzes were larger, stronger, more enduring. Blues were smaller, faster, more agile. That was just a given and always had been. But P'dan had made it personal and...Khareesh could gleefully strangle the man, but that would be dishonoring his Weyr uniform, so he refrained. Besides, besting P'dan in a battle of wits called for all the glory of stabbing an unarmed man.

Then Lilinum led them to what was obviously a tunnel to an underground base of operations, and Khareesh stuttered to an awkward stop, his grip on Tide's hand growing reflexively tighter as his eyes widened and his breath fell right out of his chest.

"Th-th-that leads un-und-d-d-derground." Excellent grasp of the obvious, Khareesh.

He could have made some comment at Andreiw for flustering Tide, but the first touches of panic were clanging cathedral bells so loudly in his head he could barely hear what was going on around him.

Heart racing, breathing shallow, jagged, uneven. Eyes dilating, palms going clammy, mouth dry, adrenaline flooding his blood so fast his kidneys actually hurt, burning with the instinct to flee.

"Nine HELLS he's an air genasi," Shrayla muttered, shouldering her bow. Her low, too-even voice faded out of Khareesh's awareness; he was too scared by the prospect of being buried alive to hear her addressing Lilinum. "You may actually want to drop-kick this one down that hole. He won't fall hard, I... don't think. Or I can punch him, but I somehow doubt that would be my most endearing course of action here. You can't put air genasi underground any more than you can put fire genasi in water, though. They react badly."

Understatement of the year, thanks Shrayla, but Khareesh wasn't listening to snark back at her this time.

ooc| Heeey let's have fun with Khareesh's BIGGEST FEAR! XD

Keldos also had some input as to Shrayla's target practice, though ever the general and tactical one his thoughts were along somewhat different lines.

"Perhaps your allies should consider this a lesson in stealth," he commented casually to Andreiw and Lilinum. "If she can see them, and indicate such by her shots, then they are not as well concealed as they may have otherwise believed. The next eyes that spot them in the trees might not be as friendly, or willing to miss." He gave the werewolf a nod of approval, more for her attempt to remain the 'Good Dog' as she had once put it to him, rather than for the actual shots that were fired. Hey, a while back he had told her she had his support in this Shrayla-Redeeming-Herself plan, and he meant it! any time he could offer encouragement, he as sure as the sun rose would!

Andriew's continual jabs at them was beginning to rile the Archangel, and not in the least because
it was bothering Tide whom he considered a good friend. But the 'boyfriends' line had his wings drawing up tight against his back, a Solarian sign of irritating boarding on anger. He had some foreknowledge concerning that topic, and his own feelings towards it as well - while they'd only briefly known one another, the other angel had been something of a friend . Thankfully Andriew recanted his statement before Keldos had time to act.

Perhaps he would have said more to the conversation at hand but he noticed that his brother had fallen utterly silent, wings slightly tense as if concentrating. The Archangel was about to speak to it when his eyes caught sight of the change in the Lorekeeper's attire, and widened.

"Little Brother! Your wings!" He took a step forward and caught hold of Raferties' right wing, pulling it out so he could see the guard more clearly, even wrapping his hand around the midpoint to feel its strength. The chains that spanned the back of his wings gave a soft and melodic jingle as the appendages moved.

"It would seem," Raferties said after he took a moment to regain some composure, the feeling of the familiar protective items back in place almost overwhelming his mental calm, "that this is a new facet of our being here." Addressing them all, he elaborated. "These wing guards were made by Keldos over ten thousand years ago, as a gift to me before Solaris was even acknowledged by the mortals of his world. I have not had them since I fled our heavens, and thought them destroyed along with my library. Keldos has told me that this is a false belief, but nevertheless they have remained beyond my possession... until this moment." He flexed his wings. "I do not know the full extent of this, but it seems that at least while we are here we - those of us from Teragaia - may have the ability to control our current situation, at least in regards to ourselves with a strong enough effort of will. I focused on these guards, how they felt upon my wings, how they looked, even their warmth and scent and sound, down to the finest detail. And now they are upon my wings once more." He gave a nod to Shrayla and James, both whom he knew had ranged weaponry. "It is therefore reasonably possible to say for example both of you, with the same effort of concentration, could ensure you do not run out of ammunition while we are here, or alter what you have to another type. But I will warn I would not rely too heavily upon this ability: there is no telling what its limit may be, or when it might suddenly expire."

Now, Keldos, being Raferties' brother, caught it at once, and Tide having known the Lorekeeper the longest of the group might have as well. The others may or may not have realized, but Raferties was choosing his words very carefully. When James had appeared he had called this a dream, thus introducing the concept to the group. But neither Andreiw nor Lilinum had been there, and who knew how that knowledge would affect their world, or the Teragaia natives' situation on Flare. Telling them that this was a dream, when to them it clearly wasn't, could have far reaching consequences.

But Raferties wasn't Lorekeeper for nothing. Even through his focusing he'd been able to maintain an ear to the conversation. He smiled at Khareesh, trying to be encouraging, then eyed the tree before turning to Lilinum.

"You mentioned another way, one that included a fall? Would it be safe to assume that it is open-assure then? If so, and you believe my brother or I could fit - " He unfurled one wing to give better idea to his full span. " - then perhaps one of us could fly Khareesh down. It might be an easier path for all three of us. And if one of you were to come with we could ensure no undue alarm from your friends."

As he was offering the suggestion, Raferties put a hand on Tide's shoulder, giving a small squeeze. Yes, he'd heard all of the conversation, and in true Guardian Angel fashion offered comfort to distress. He wouldn't add anything further to the conversation since apology had been given... but he would be vigilant to see it didn't happen again. As would his brother, who was equally quiet but did take a moment to catch the man's eye showing that no matter what their situation was, he didn't consider the behavior appropriate. Rather than delve into his own opinions, he regarded Lilinum.

"My brother is correct that it may be a wise idea. While I can draw my wings in rather tight, and he have even less trouble than I, if our feather snag and fall out they will turn to dust. Typically the dust blows away in short order, but given this is Flare and the situation unusual, the less chances the better."

((Pardon any typos- used the kindle for some of this. I'll proofread this in the morning, and add Anari's part then too.))

Andreiw was a bit taken back by that answer, though Lilinum just rolled with it. "We weren't trying to be covert to be honest. We are trying to run away and not get caught. Different priorities at stake. Some of them are decoys too. Designed to lure the enemy away from where we currently are. Speaking of which, I will be glad to tell you all this later once we are not standing out here endangering the rest of the rebellion." She did know it was a lesson in stealth. Not all that Shrayla had shot at was a decoy and she made a mental note to let them know just how bad they had been. Yes. Running away was important, but so was living.

At the fact that Keldos, Khareesh, and Raferties could not enter, she nodded. "I figured as much. No need to worry about knocking him out. He can just use the free fall route. I'll go wit them to that spot." Gently taking Tide's hand she tugged her away from Khareesh and towards Andreiw. "A trade though. I trust you. Andreiw still does not. Your friend here seems important to you all." She hadn't missed how they had protected both Tide and Khareesh in the forest. Hadn't missed that at all. "So I come with you to show you the way and ensure my safety for both him and the rest of the rebellion who has yet to met you, Tide will go with Andreiw and stick close."

She nodded toward Shrayla, Anari, and Gwydion. The only three sticking with the party. The only three that she knew could hold their own in a fight. Really. The trade was a useless thing. On her end, it was two against one. On the other? Three against one. The odds were not fair on either side, but she knew it was more for show than anything else. A show of semi-trust at the very least. A show of attempting to try and keep all calm and off the weapons that were very trigger happy.

Also known as the werewolf.

"P'dan...Cannot say that I have..." Tide had finally recovered enough to speak when she suddenly found herself being tugged toward Andreiw. She didn't want to go with him! Though she sighed and moved over to him, releasing Khareesh's hand as she did so. She understood what Lilinum was trying to do. And understood that it was just a gesture. There was no threat behind it or anything like that.

Didn't make it any better in the end.

Lilinum studied them before nodding slowly. "It would appear that the universe is looking down upon us kindly. Granted us you and your group with your abilities to help us. Too bad it has almost come to late." She tossed a glare at Andreiw as if making a point. Probably silently telling him to be a lot nicer now. This group not only had fighting skills, but skills they couldn't begin to understand. Last thing they needed was to have them as enemies.

Tide did catch it and nodded slowly. That was wise. If this had been present day, she wouldn't have cared if people knew they were dreams or in some kind of dream. But this was the past. A past that for all she knew, she was changing just by being here. Just by her friends being here. There was no way that she was gonna let any changes be bigger than necessary. No way at all.

Judging the wing spawn, she nodded slowly. "You would have to keep them close to fit through initially, but it will only be a couple of feet before it opens back out into the cavern. This way. We should probably more it as we are a ways from that entrance." Moving towards Andreiw, she gave him a quick kiss. "Keep an eye on them okay? Till I get back. They are friends Andreiw. Rather you believe that or not. They are friends."

Moving back, she beckoned towards the trio that would have to fall in and sat the pace at being pretty fast. Though maybe if Gwydion wanted too, he could offer his speedy services. But that would be up to him in the end. In the meantime, Andreiw would just be grumbling as he ducked under the tree roots, Tide in tow behind him.

"Come on then. Before we stand around so long, we get caught and then all hell really will break loose."

Both angels nodded in agreement, though Raferties, having paid keen attention to Tide since their arrival, noted her discomfort. And who could really blame her? Here they were in unfamiliar and dangerous territory, being taken to an unknown destination, and now were being separated. Even if it was more a gesture than a threat or even a precaution, that she was the one singled out to go with Andriew who had also been the one shown as the most untrusting and possibly hostile had to trigger some nerves. So, as a Guardian, he knew what he needed to do.

With a small smile and inclination of his head towards Lilinum, he took a step towards Tide and reached up to brush the back of his fingers over her forehead. She'd feel a slight warmth, like being touched by the sun, and for a moment a rune would glow golden where he'd touched before it faded away.

"While this is only temporary," he said, partially to reassure her and partially to reassure Khareesh, whom he believed wouldn't like this situation much his own discomfort aside, "it will ensure your safety. I will know if you are in harm's way, and should it be needed I can come to your side in a single heartbeat. So do not be afraid." With that he returned to his place at Keldos' side.

"Perhaps," the Archangel General countered to the rebel woman's words, "this is not 'almost too late' but more exactly the correct time. An enemy is never more dangerous than when they stand upon the brink of defeat, and never is a surprise more unexpected when the ones who have the upperhand sense victory." He and his brother followed after Lilinum readily enough, the two angels slowly shifting their wings in preparation for what they would have to do. By her words, they both would have to free-fall for a short distance, then snap their wings open to fly, something that could be a bit of a strain and if mis-timed could lead to injury.

Anari, left with the 'ground group' as it were, was meanwhile looking Andriew over with a speculative eye. She couldn't help but feel for them, both Lilinum and Andriew. She could sympathize, even relate, to much of this, and her silence had been caused by memories of the past washing over her. She followed under the tree root easily enough, yes flail loose in its holster but not drawn.

"That you say there are multiple entrances, but one central hub is something I think I should applaud you for," she said softly, well aware of how sound could travel when going underground like this and wanting to avoid anything giving them away. "Wasn't nearly this organized back on my birthworld. Hmm..." An idea had suddenly come to her. Raferties had said that he believe the Teragaia visitors could manipulate reality. She wondered...

Like he had said of his wing-guards, she hadn't worn anything beyond leather armor since the Dragon Highlords had tossed her into the runic circle that had begun her world traveling. But before then she had worn a fine steel breastplate, commissioned by her Captain in the watch and given to her upon her promotion to lieutenant. It had protected her in battle for many years and saved her life many times over. Could she have that back?

While she couldn't risk closing her eyes to focus, she thought as hard as she could to remember the feel of it and its shape and color, including the crest of the watch that adorned the left front, over her heart. In her mind's eye it gleamed, polished and new, not battered and broken like the Highlords had done to it. Perhaps, maybe?

Posted Image <--- Kinda what I saw for her armor, only add in some moderately-sized, smooth shoulder guards as well.

Gwydion started to follow into the underground path. Then noted how long it was gonna take the other group. Sheesh, that was a treck and a half. All that because Khareesh had a phobia? Gwydion could relate to that. He wouldn't touch water if you gave him a hundred foot pole. Thoguh to have to face that long a hike? He felt a little bad. Bad enough to actually be nice... That had to be a sign of the apocalypse or something, right?

"Guys need a lift?" He said, splitting from the underground group and walking over. "I can get you there in... Thirty minutes. Being generous with that time of course." Never given a Angel a piggy back ride before. So that would be something else to add to his list of fun things he's done. "Naturally it be shorted but being weighed down and the trips back... Yeah, thirty minutes maybe." He said, gicing the group a grin. "Of course that means Piggy back rides. Whos first!" He said, already stretching for the run.

"The angels don't need to go," Shrayla added as everyone seemed to be splitting up. "I mean, you boys CAN go fall through the roof if that's what you want, but you don't need to look in on this idiot. Drop an AIR genasi, he won't go splat."

Unless the Illogical Field was having a spectacularly grumpy day, she guessed, but it didn't seem to reach very far here beyond where and apparently when it had plonked them. And how.

Her mind wandered back around to what Raferties said, though, and Shrayla frowned down at the North Wind in her hands.

"You mean to tell me I've actually been willing my own ammunition into existence this entire time?" She growled. "I spend no small fortune on enchanting my bow to make its own arrows and now it's still all in my head. Just once I want the Illogical Field to manifest with a tangible body. Then I could show it what Shrayla the bad dog looks like."

She grinned suddenly at Andreiw, who had a firm and unrelenting grip on Tide. It was the kind of grin that was all sharp canine teeth (all four upper canines, because werewolf) and zero humor.

"You might get to see Shrayla the bad dog, too, if you hurt Tidesweep. Mind you, I'm going to help you, for now. You smell desperate, scared, cornered. I know a lost cause when I find one and I'm a sucker for lost causes. Point me at your enemies and I'll help you end them, but trust in this fact, if you hurt Tide, or any of the others here...it'll be your heart I eat. Not a threat; a promise. But! As long as your intentions are good...we shouldn't have a problem."

Having watched everyone she'd ever loved die...Shrayla wasn't keen on watching the people she liked meet the same fate. So. JUST SO EVERYONE WAS ON THE SAME PAGE.

That said, though, she made to quietly and obediently follow into the root tunnel.

She wasn't trying to stir up trouble. She just wanted to be clear that nobody was disposable, here, and if Andreiw thought differently...she was going to change his mind.

Khareesh, for his part, was only absorbing maybe half of the conversation going on around him.

Maybe less.

His primal fear buttons had been mashed, see. Air genasi were by heritage violently claustrophobic, prone to dashing themselves to pieces against walls in blind panic when trapped underground. He wasn't quite to the self-injurious frenzy, just yet, but he was visibly shaking and they hadn't even actually gotten underground yet.

Someone made him let go of Tide's hand. He didn't register who.

People were talking. Words didn't make much sense. Had no meaning. Something about a long fall (falling in meant the meeting cavern was connected to the sky, right? RIGHT?) and...

...yeah, no, nowhere near half. Khareesh was actually clocking maybe 10% of what was going on around him.

He would have appreciated Raf's gesture, under other circumstances.

Now? He had reached the point of fear where he was actually too scared to piss himself, too scared to scream, and that didn't quite make him any smarter.

Where Lilinum went, he'd follow, because that was apparently what was needed from him? But any questions or comments sailed firmly in one ear and out the other without meeting any cognitive resistance.

Most everyone who had arrived mysteriously on Flare in the illogically distant past had arrived within a certain radius of convenience. They'd found each other easily, met the leaders of the not-attacking-on-sight-mostly faction.

Not so one of the earlier arrivals.

Linah found herself in an unfamiliar land, then something hard hit her in the back of the head and everything went dark.

Tide blinked as Raferties moved nearer to her. Thinking that he had wanted to try the tunnels after all, she was about to protest but stopped when he brushed his fingers against her forehead. While she couldn't see the rune, she could feel the warmth from it and she gave him a grateful smile. She had no idea what it had cost him to do that, but she was glad he had done it. While she didn't think she was in danger, it didn't stop the nerves from being there. They were still there but now they were a bit more under control. Just a bit.

Andreiw snorted. Before he could say anything though, Lilinum spoke up. "Wow...You guys are just full of surprises. Like...Real life magic users. We thought they were just fairy tales and the closest would be the vampyres here."

"Vampyres are not magic. How many times do I have to tell you that?" Andreiw said it like it was an age old argument between the two. Which it was actually. Over who had more 'magic' in their veins. Vampyre or Siren. Which was exactly the point that Lilinum was making.

"You can think of your comeback later. Right now...Go." With that, she turned her attention to Keldos. "I sure hope so. Right now, it really does seem like it is too late. But maybe...I'll tell you later when there is no chance of prying ears or eyes." she barely took a few more steps before Gwydion was there and offering....A piggyback ride?

"Thirty minutes? It is at least a couple hours walk. What do you mean thirty minutes?" She would look very confused at the Journeyman. Maybe an explanation would be helpful. Though even as she waited to try and make heads or tails of it, Andreiw was already leading the others further through the main tunnel. "First...What do you mean first?" In the end, she figured she would have to volunteer since Gwydion would have no idea where he was going, but at the same time...She was still trying to wrap her head around how he could do in thirty minutes what took them two hours to do.

And that was, according to him, not even the fastest he could do. Just who was these people and how could she find more of them?

Hearing Anari, Andreiw looked back at her. He wasn't expecting a compliment for what they had done. It was done out of necessity actually. The main tunnel was natural and so was its exit. To try and create more entrances and exits were both a waste of time and would have made the base almost impossible to defend. Noticing that she seemed to be lost in thought, he left her bed. Maybe she was doing what the winged one had done. He wasn't about to interfere with that. Despite what Shrayla might think about his attitude, he wasn't that...Hostile. Just tired and weary.

Which Shrayla hit right on the nose. Tossing the werewolf a glare, he growled low in his throat. "I would not hurt her. That would not be the point of this thing Lilinum did. And good luck eating what doesn't exist." He did have a heart. A physical one at least. It was the mental feely feely heart he was referring too at this point in time. "It is a long walk. Almost an hour. So why don't we just all try to get along till then. Without the threats."

Even he would make an effort...Somewhat.

As for Anari, she would be successful in her endeavor. The weight of the armor would settle on her torso, gleaming as the day she had first doned it. Actual armor for the win!

Poor Khareesh would probably eventually regain mental functions...Probably once this was all over. Though hopefully sooner.

As for Linah...She was incredibly lucky that the ones who found her (and knocked her out) were rebels. She was knew. She had appeared out of nowhere and they had been worried it was some sort of...New technology by the other side. Worried that she had been trying to find the base and destroy it. So what did they do?

Knock her out and take her that very base.

No one ever said that the group that found her was the smartest of the batch. Far from it actually.

She would wake up with a bag over her head, hands bound in front of her and feet bound to a chair. Her weapons would be gone, but the soul gem that contained Munchy would be safe. Not that they didn't try to take it either, but the one they had chosen, a vampyre, had run away screaming as soon as she touched the gem they all decided it was a good idea not to take that away from her.

All in all, it was crappy job and maybe they should have paid more attention in How to Kidnap 101 class. Then they would have known to find a chair with armrests to tie her arms too. Would have duct tape her mouth instead of leaving it alone. Would have known to actually search her other than just a quick look search, and wouldn't have put her in the middle of the playing court, facing the one entrance and exit they had. Would have had her in the middle of a room where she couldn't see exactly where she was and just how she could escape too.

All in all. A botched job and if Linah woke up, they were going to find out just how botched of a job they did.

Hopefully in the 'You guys are idiots and let me show you how to do it right' kind of way and not the 'I am just gonna kill you all' kind of way.

The good news: the party that would recognize her was about twenty minutes out.

The bad news was...Linah could still probably do a lot of damage in twenty minutes.

The Lorekeeper didn't take any umbrage at Shrayla's words, merely chuckled.

"Perhaps you are correct, as that would make sense. But between our travel here and whatever happened to us, plus is present state, I believe it would be better to be safe than sorry should the worst happen. Plus, I am certain this path would be simpler on Keldos, and though I believe I could fit along the underground path well enough I do not want to risk losing any feathers accidentally. It may not hurt, but the risk is too great for my comfort." He wasn't speaking of the risk of the actual loss, for accidentally removed plumage wouldn't cripple either angels' flight unless a great deal were taken. Likely Tide knew, and Anari, and perhaps even Gwydion as he had been involved in the trials beneath Raferties' library, but Raferties' concern came from the fact that when he or his brother lost feathers, they dissolved into dust. Typically this dust would blow away quickly, but there was always that chance that a trace would linger, and too much glittering dust could reveal the entrance to unfriendly eyes.

"As to your ammunition," he continued, "I do not know whether you have been subconsciously manifesting it the entire time, or whether it is physically present. To determine such would take much more time than I believe we have, at least now. But I would not be surprised if you could augment your bow and armor, perhaps even yourself, beyond what could be considered the norm. As I cautioned, however, I would not rely on this ability to be a salvation from danger." As Andriew and Lilinum seemed to be ready to head out, he just gave Tide an encouraging nod, too a moment of thought to ensure the Guardian's Mark was working properly - poor girl, she was so nervous! - then headed out along with the rest to the drop entrance. Keldos gave a nod of farewell, see you shortly, but otherwise was focusing more on their surroundings, keeping an eye open for danger or observation.

***

Anari couldn't believe it. First she felt the subtle shift in the give of the leather, then the increased weight and the familiar, comforting pressure of finely-forged steel around her ribs. Her posture subtly changed along with it, becoming more straight and her shoulders shifting back both to accommodate the burden as well as from how she had to stand when clad in her preferred armor, as well as likely perhaps a bit of her old self coming back to the fore. Not the junior weyrwoman Anari that more of the Teragaia natives might have seen, or even the self-appointed watchwoman of the village, but Lieutenant Anari, called L.T. by her peers.

Anari took a deep breath and let it out slowly, relearning the breastplate and privately basking in its return, before refocusing on the path ahead. The tension between Shrayla and Andriew wasn't missed, though, not by a long shot. They seemed to settle it, somewhat, between them, but she was on alert for any continual issues. In the back of her mind she privately thought that the pair were actually somewhat alike, at least in this moment. They certainly were acting like it!

"An hour?" she echoed, trying to divert the topic and mostly for Tide's sake. "Alright, then lets get moving."

((Urg! I know there was more I wanted to put in, but I don't remember it now. I hate it when that happens!))

"Told you, I don't make threats."

The argument was pretty old, though. Old as snowed-in days by the fireplace in Drogan's house just out of Hilltop, debating the exact definition of the word "threat" with Dorna, Mischa, Xanos, and Drogan himself.

Xanos and Shrayla had agreed on little else, but they had concurred that if you fully intended to follow through on a then tagged to a given if condition -- example, if that man tries to rob you, then you promise to stab him with every intention of doing exactly that -- it was not in fact a threat at all.

It was just a given fact. You do the thing, I respond how I tell you I'm gonna.

Dorna had kept her silence, always the puzzler, always turning problems over in her mind while the others quibbled over semantics. Mischa had been extremely vehement that saying you were going to hurt someone was a threat, always, end of discussion.

Drogan had left more room for discussion, but in the end, he'd been on Mischa's side of the argument.

Shrayla herself still didn't see it, but she accepted that sometimes she was just still a wild animal. They'd called her Dumb Dog most of the time, and there'd been a point to it. (Well, if you asked her classmates and if you asked Shrayla herself, though anyone with an outside perspective and without context might actually catch that Shrayla was pretty smart...and unlikely to argue with bullying from people with whom she was trying to assimilate.)

"We should just get to this thing. The longer we stand out here talking about talking about acting, the longer the hostile force has to remain in a superior position and the less time we have to do anything actually constructive."

A base would have maps, yes? Maps and plans! Maps and plans and information. Shrayla wasn't impatient to spring after the enemy like some untried pup before her first blooding, but she did want something substantive to work with, something to really gain a comprehensive understanding of the enemy and formulate a plan.

Yes, even the dog planned things. Often not as meticulously as more orderly types would prefer, but plans typically had a pretty short shelf-life once they hit first contact, and surviving was more about being able to adapt to changing circumstance than about sticking to impeccable planning at all times. Still, it was good to do SOME planning.

A breeze took a scent by Shrayla's nose, and she perked up instantly, sniffing the wind for all the world like a dog on a trail, tail stiff and ears alert, attention thoroughly caught.

"We're not the only ones that made it here," the werewolf ranger decided after a few moments. "There's another here, doesn't smell native. Trail's a bit stale, but...she, it's a woman, was dragged through here not too long ago. Your rebels have a prisoner."

Now that she knew what she was looking for, Shrayla cast her eyes around the doorway of the base, noting scuff marks, the sign of an unwieldy body being dragged by the incompetent.

"Drag marks here, here. She's unconscious, and whoever reeled her in doesn't know how to carry an unconscious prisoner." She touched fingertips to a rock around the base of the tree that housed the base entrance. Her fingertips came away sticky red. "This prisoner is going to be less than thrilled when she wakes up. But I figure we'll be even soon. Y'all aren't going to be thrilled when you get that genasi underground."

Linah had to give the rookie points.

She wasn't easy prey under any circumstance short of killed ahead of time, five thousand years of instincts, training, the constant death-match that was The Game, the war that was surviving as a woman of unchaste reputation throughout a history that tended to punish that with death or worse. Linah had been around for a long, long time, and she'd earned her survival.

Randomly appearing in a new place, though, without seeing the very startled teenager directly behind her who immediately whacked her in the head with something hard -- some kind of club or cudgel? -- Linah was not quite as prepared as usual to meet the threat, and she dropped like a sack of water balloons.

It was to the feeling of dry foreign vegetation and small, sharp rocks scraping against her feet as she was dragged that Linah began to regain a bit of consciousness. Not enough to rally and protest, really, but she was uncomfortably aware of the arms around her belly squeezing with all the gentleness of the Heimlich maneuver that hauled her limp, insensate body from wherever she'd arrived to wherever they were going.

She'd almost healed enough to turn things around on her captor when the kid dropped her, near a large tree, and Linah's head landed hard against a rock caught up in the roots, and for a while it was dark again.

The next time she came to, she had that vaguely cranky nausea that usually heralded a concussion, which would take a few more minutes than usual to heal, because brain injuries were tricky, and she came slowly aware of some kind of rough rope around her wrists, waist, and feet. Her feet were secured to the legs of the chair her captor had parked her in, and Linah subtly shifted her weight to experiment with the balance of the chair and the tightness of her bindings both, and came to the embarrassing conclusion that she'd been taken captive by a rank amateur.

Rickety chair, substandard knots. Linah could think of maybe four ways she could handle escaping, and that was just off the top of her head. More ideas would likely come when she could think a little less fuzzily.

The hands patting her face were pale. Also extremely clammy and more than a little shaky. Scared shitless.

Linah opened her eyes, blinking several times until her surroundings clarified, surroundings shaded by the blinding bright light shining right in her face. Maps pinned to corkboards (or whatever the equivalent was), tables with plans and other maps with flagged figurines...

This was a base. Okay. That meant the light was probably some kind of interrogation lamp. Or something approximating a lamp, though trying to see what exactly the source of the light was meant staring straight into it, and Linah preferred to aim her gaze down, more towards the freckle-faced teen looking down at her.

"W-wh-wh-wh-who are y-y-y-y-you?" the kid who had presumably dragged her all this way demanded. Voice cracking, booming, shaking, fear and puberty both taking their respective tolls. "Wh-wh-wh-wh-who sen-se-se-sen-sent-t-t-t-t you?"

No science had ever conclusively defined what CAUSED a stutter, at least as far as Linah was aware, but science had figured out how to make a stutter worse. Anxiety, stress, pressure.

Linah blinked again.

"You're awfully scared for a strapping lad who just took a woman by surprise and dragged her to a hole and tied her to a chair," Linah mused. "You think I was sent here looking for your base. You think I'm looking for your base and your first instinct was to take me into your base. Goddess, boy, you didn't think that through very far."

"I-I-I-I-I-I-I- shut up!" He dragged a hand through his hair, paced in short, sharp stomps, a caged animal.

On the bright side, that he was now hyperventilating meant he wasn't watching Linah very closely. She bent over, rocked the chair until she could work her bound wrists underneath the legs, until her hands were behind her and under her coat.

He turned back towards her, but didn't appear to register the dramatic change in her position.

Linah's heart broke a little. Had she been this young and callow once? Yes, yes she had. Had she ever been so scared she'd miss obvious details?

She hoped not, but she was probably not the most reliable witness on the topic.

"W-w-w-w-w-what-t-t's th-th-that?!" the lad demanded suddenly, eyes fixing on the gem hanging on its cord around Linah's neck.

He didn't wait for an answer before he reached for it, but he froze the instant his hand curled around it, a bolt of malevolent intent paralyzing him. Linah could feel it too, the beast within aching to rip the boy's arm off just for touching and then snapping to devour the rest just to fill the yawning, empty void of raw HUNGER--

The kid dropped the gem, where it bounced back to rest between Linah's breasts as usual.

"Just an old friend," she answered belatedly, with a lazy smile. Munchy really was pissed off about the whole gem thing, but it was better than not existing at all, as far as the Immortal herself was concerned. She was relieved to have Munchy with her, as weird as that sounded. Oh, he'd always spent 98% of his time trying to either kill her or sabotage her, but he was one of her first, and he was...comforting, even if he was the most treacherous piece of shit she'd ever met.

The kid's eyes, wide as the proverbial saucers, darted between the crystal and Linah's face, expression twisted into some comical hybrid of terror, shock, and raw confusion.

"He wouldn't say we're friends, of course, but that's just the way of things sometimes." Linah slid one of her daggers out of her waistband, easily working it through the rope that bound her wrists. And waist, for that matter, and it was immediately easier to breathe once she'd sliced that. "Speaking of friends, though, you really should have had a few of yours help you with me."

"B-b-b-b-b-but y-y-y-y-y-you--"

Linah tilted the chair back onto its hind legs, slid her ankles down -- detaching them from the chair without needing to cut the rope or break the chair in the process -- and pounced.

Legs around waist, arms around neck, sleeper hold, Linah cradled the kid and whispered soothing nothings into his ear even as she viciously flattened his air and brain-blood supply until he lost consciousness.

"Sorry, kid. But this just isn't how I plan to spend my day."

Linah retrieved her dropped dagger and returned it to her waistband. She then sat her former captor on the prisoner chair and found some rope.

The end result was that of someone who'd had some practice with ropes and knots and securing people. Granted, most of Linah's expertise had less to do with prisoners and more to do with consensual bondage, but there were parallels enough that the kid wouldn't be untying himself any time soon.

The Immortal found her iron sword, still the flawed, ancient thing with the triangle-shaped bite taken out of the blade, and returned it to the lining of her black coat.

"Mmmrrrnnrrgh."

"What's the story, Morning Glory? Hey, look who's awake in record time!" Linah bent down to grin at the kid on eye level. "Sorry about that, but there's been a bit of a misunderstanding. See, I have no idea who you are. Or where I am. And I need to know, but I can't have you running around clubbing me over the head while I look for answers."

She patted his cheek, an affectionate mimicry of how he'd awakened her earlier.

"Oh, and for future reference, when you frisk your prisoners for weapons." Linah opened her coat, revealing the sheathed iron sword. "You should never assume you've disarmed someone just because you found something." She pulled out her daggers, twirled them in hand, made them disappear again. "Check everywhere, just in case your adversary is packing a lot of toys in inventive places."

The kid groaned, and slumped again, and Linah took that to mean he was going to play possum until someone from his side came to back him up. Not a bad way to go, really. Playing unconscious was a perfectly good counter-interrogation technique if you weren't in the hands of a sadist or someone who knew better. And while Linah did know better, she wasn't particularly interested in pursuing the kid.

Not when information was lying around!

She'd be reading, when it was time for other people to show up. She was fairly confident in her ability to explain the captured teenager.

Gwydion blinked and laughed at Lilinum's confusion. "Sorry, sometimes my mouth moves faster than my mind. In short. I'm not human, or a vampyre, or any of that. I'm a Journeyman. Of the Red Ether. Which embodies speed and lightning. So.... Blah blah blah, I'm made of Ether, blah blah blah, Ether surrounds us and I can tap into that allowing me to run as fast as... Well, it can vary depending on the Ether in a place.... Here... Well" He spun his finger in the air. Much like one would test the direction and strength of the wind. Small electrical sparks danced around it. "It's pretty nice and heavy, but not great. So yes. I can run faster, Ether permitting." He said, hoping that helped a little... It probably didn't. He was horrible when it came to this kinda stuff.

"Look, I run fast and shoot lightning. Long and short of it." He said giving the group a friendly smile. "If you really wanna know about Ether and how it affects every living thing... We can have a nice long chat when we beat those losers to the base. For now, just trust my speed." He said, giving a grin that you might expect a con artist to give a potential customer. "Is this a face that would lie? The answer is a definite yes, but unless you wanna walk..." He shrugged.
