"Well, don't just moon over her from a distance like an idiot!" Rashana threw a rumpled-up shirt from the top of her laundry basket, hitting her twin brother square in the head with it. Khareesh, as always when his assailant was his sister, ducked a half second after he'd already been hit, and his head was covered with stinky T-shirt clinging to him like some kind of living thing.
"I don't..." Khareesh paused to pull the shirt off of his face and throw it back. Rashana caught it deftly and re-added it to the basket she was carrying down the hall to her laundry machines. Khareesh hauled himself off the couch to follow her down so they could talk while she did her general lives-in-a-house chores.
"I don't know the particulars. I just know she had someone special to her before she got here and he...I don't want to be insensitive. I don't want to be pushy."
By this time, Rashana had finished putting her dirty clothes into the washing machine, which left her with an empty basket to plonk on Khareesh's head like a much oversized helmet.
"You don't think not telling her she has options isn't also being insensitive, you twit?"
Ah, Rashana. She was Khareesh's twin, but aside from appearance, they were really nothing alike. He was diplomatic, charismatic, charming. Rashana was a sledgehammer.
"I-"
"NO." She retrieved her basket, setting it aside, and then covered Khareesh's mouth with a hand. "Here's what you're going to do. You're going to stop twiddling your thumbs and pining like a fool. In fact, it's almost time for the Year End festivals for the tribes of the Water Clan, is it not? And you already have festival clothing in her size if I know you at all."
Khareesh would have liked to deny it, but two things stood in his way. Rashana's firm grip over his mouth wasn't even the big problem. Mostly, it was that Rashana was right about everything.
He settled for nodding helplessly.
"So. You're going to mount up on Myth out there and you're going to find Tidesweep and you're going to offer an invitation. And if she doesn't want to go with you, fine. Tell me to stuff my advice where the wind doesn't blow and you'll be right to. But I think you should damn well ask her opinion before you go off and write the ending of the story yourself."
~~~
She reminds me of Yuleth, Myth observed once Khareesh was strapped in and they were launching into the sky. Direct. Fierce. Angry.
"Rashana...is complicated."
But she's your...clutchmate?
"Twin." Khareesh chuckled, watching the ground zoom down away from them with zero fear of heights. "She's my twin."
What IS a twin?
"It's...hmm. Imagine, if you will, that Yuleth or some other female dragon lays an egg that has two yolks in it. Two baby dragons in one eggshell. Those two dragons would be twins. But genasi are close enough to human that our females give birth instead of laying eggs...unless the Illogical Field has something to say about it, I suppose, so our mother gave birth to two babies for one pregnancy instead of just the one."
That sounds complicated. And painful. I think our method is better.
"You would." Khareesh laughed, and then set his sights on looking around. Weyr dragons were more or less everywhere, but he was looking for one in particular. "Head for the coast, Myth."
I was wondering if you were going to ask Tidesweep to do something with you any time in my lifetime.
"Your lifetime is my lifetime, Myth."
And that, K'reesh, is my point. With an amused snort, Myth hit the correct altitude and banked, lithe body coiling around the air currents and thermals to glide smoothly out toward the ocean. I see Lenaarth. She's...painting?
"She's pretty good at that, particularly for not having thumbs."
Myth mulled over that for the rest of the time it took him to close the distance, and then his attention was focused solely on backwinging so delicately that he stirred no sand beneath him.
Lenaarth's painting went completely undisturbed.
If Myth preened and postured a little at his extraordinarily graceful landing, well, he did earn it. Yes, he was about half Lenaarth's size, so maybe trying to get her attention wasn't the most sensible course of action, but he was trying so hard. Bless.
Khareesh unhooked the safety tethers and hopped off of Myth's back, landing as gracefully as his dragon had. They were a well-matched pair in that respect, elegant and witty and not terribly combative.
"Fair winds and fine fortune!" Khareesh hailed, waving to Tidesweep on his way to her.
Between Tide's love of the sea, Lenaarth's love of painting landscapes, and Tide's love of Lenaarth, Khareesh had figured the beach was probably a good place to start looking for Lenaarth, and Tide by proxy.
Yeah, there was a reason his sister was kicking his ass. He was doing a GREAT job of not noticing Tide's routine, see, and...damn it.
The festival clothes in his "saddlebag" (an idea brought along by people who had come after the Pernese settlers that had arrived by accident, applied quite recently to the dragons) were either about to get very relevant...or very awkward.
Not that they hadn't been awkward for a while. Most men didn't walk around randomly carrying women's clothing. But...
He'd see.
He walked up with a smile on and arms spread wide in welcome (and to catch any random hugs, if they were forthcoming; he liked keeping his options open).
Tide was crouching low in the waves, watching as fish and crabs went about their business. She was completely still, not really moving as the wildlife around her continue on about their business. It probably helped when you had a hippocampus companion that could reassure the various wildlife that Tide meant no harm and just wanted to watch them. Her shoes and socks were up by Lenaarth where they wouldn't get wet as the Bronze mottle painted. It was so rare that she ever got Tide to hold still long enough for a portrait and she was taking advantage of it. Even if the rest of Tide's clothes would be soaking wet by the time she made it out. She had actually left her bag at home today since she had just wanted to relax and not gather up anything.
Lenaarth had just put the finishing touches on the paint blobs that made up Tide when Myth appeared. Arching perfectly non-existent eyebrows, Lenaarth gave a low chuckle. That was a wonderful landing Myth! I don't think a single grain of sand is out of place. The Bronze mottle wasn't as oblivious as her rider when it came to certain things, but that didn't mean she always knew the reason behind it. She had noticed Myth often trying to bring attention to himself (didn't realize it was specifically her attention), and so thought to at least give him what he wanted. It couldn't hurt in the least and it was a wonderful landing. She knew she couldn't accomplish something half as skilled. Well...Maybe she could if she spent more time flying, but you can't paint and fly. Been there. Done that. Nearly ended up crashing into a tree...And a mountain. And the ocean.
She had tried the skill multiple times. All with the same results.
Hearing his voice, Tide turned her head and blinked at him. Her grin widened as she saw him. "Khareesh!" Standing up, she splashed through the water, laughing as she finally made it back to shore and almost gave him a hug. Until she realized that she was soaking wet so she stopped just short of it and gave him a warm smile. "And Myth too! What brings you to the beach this fine day?"
Lenaarth had covered her painting skillfully with a wing as Tide ran to shore. It was about half finished, but she had gotten the important part down. The rest could be left up to her imagination if she needed it to be. He has something planned right? Or did he really come so far out to see her for no reason? This part was naturally to Myth only. She wasn't gonna pressure her rider into anything. That wouldn't be fair to either one.
Tide stopped short but Khareesh met her for a hug anyway. His flight jacket could take a little wet without much fuss. Even if it couldn't have, he'd have hugged her anyway.
He was very fond of hugs, our Khareesh. And very fond of Tide.
Well, his clutchmate...twin? His twin gave him what he described as a "royal kick in the ass" this morning to finally say SOMETHING to her, Myth replied, preening at Lenaarth's praise, radiating a nonverbal glow in response to her approval. Happiness, pride, general good feeling, a little tiny bit of smugness because he WAS the most graceful blue (Mottle) in the Weyr, thank you for noticing. So if K'reesh isn't an idiot, Tidesweep should finally figure out he's...well, an idiot.
Myth's tone was fondly condescending, but can you blame him?
Khareesh was thankfully oblivious to this side conversation. Rather, he knew Myth was talking to Lenaarth, he just didn't know the contents of the conversation.
Of course, he wouldn't be in any better position to argue against Myth than he had against Rashana.
"We came looking for you, incidentally," Khareesh told Tide, grinning at her. "My sister reminded me it's about time for the Year's End festivals in the desert. Year's End for the Water Clan, anyway, the rest of us don't end the year in the summer, but I promise blue fireworks and paper lanterns and exotic foods and... an introduction to a people who share your love of the water, if you're interested in joining me, perhaps?"
Somehow he managed to edit himself out of that invite, Myth sighed to Lenaarth. K'reesh, you idiot. Just tell her you like her! I hear that's how non-dragon courtship starts, anyway. Myth at least stopped short of burying his nose horn in the sand, settling instead for a subtle cringe.
Tide laughed as Khareesh hugged her anyway. "Your jacket! I will get it all wet." Not that stopped her from hugging him back. The damage was already done, so why hold back at this point?
Lenaarth looked at Khareesh and Tide and gave a delicate snort. Very well I might add. Though he did say the one thing that would be sure to get her to say yes. The Water Clans might be a good place for Tide to visit. Provided that Khareesh actually remembers to bring the proper footwear this time. Chuckling, she shook her head. Non-dragon courtship often confuses me. So many dances and sidesteps and beating around the bush. I much prefer the dragon way. It is a might more direct at least.[/b]
Blinking as she was informed that they had been looking for her, she couldn't help but feel...Elated. Sure. She was invited to things, but she was rarely sought out for anything. She didn't usually have much to offer others other than her company so that usually meant she was often left alone it felt like. But apparently her company was exactly what Khareesh wanted and she honestly doubted she could ever really deny him anything.
"I would love to join you! So long as I will not accidentally embarrass you. I am afraid I do not know much about the clans at all other than they travel. That I picked up on quite easily." Becoming thoughtful (and one would almost swear she was listening in on the dragon convo), she thought back to the last time she was with Khareesh in the desert. "On one condition though. Please do not wear boots that will burn your feet again."
Khareesh laughed. Aside from just genuinely being happy with Tide's company and elated that she did, in fact, want to spend time with him, he was both touched and amused by her concern for his feet.
"I've learned my lesson again, don't you worry about that." The soles of his boots were nice and thick, exactly as they ought. "And we aren't going to the Valley of Mummies this time. Actually, the Tribe of the Salt Eel doesn't move much, either. You'll see."
K'reeeeeeesh, Myth crooned, finally speaking up loud enough for all present to hear. I think you've forgotten something rather important, K'reesh. And you should get it yourself, because I don't have thumbs.
Khareesh snorted. "Ha, right. I brought a change of clothing along, for both of us. Festival clothing."
He released Tide from the hug with one last reluctant squeeze -- letting go was his least favorite part of hugging -- and jogged over to the bag that was attached to Myth's harness. The dragons didn't actually have saddles, as their neck ridges were sufficient seating, but the harness-attached storage was still called a saddlebag.
He could contemplate that weirdness later. Actually, it still almost made sense, which most of the world couldn't, not under the Illogical Field. So, on to less trivial things!
Like the festival yukata that Maurice back in town had put together, wailing all the while about not having the woman in question actually there to tailor everything to personally. Khareesh had known the measurements, however, because he knew his textiles, particularly clothing.
It was a deep, rich midnight blue, genuine aranea silk if Khareesh had his guess, shimmering in the afternoon sun. Painstakingly hand-embroidered into the fabric was a motif of swimming carp stitched in an almost-living overlay of silver and mint green, with a silver-edged dark blue sash to match and hold it together.
His own garment was the same base midnight blue, but instead stitched in silver and pale winter blue, with a wind motif instead of elegant fish.
"I, ah, may have taken a few liberties, but I thought you might like something to wear for the occasion. This would have been awkward to explain if you'd said no."
You should stop talking before you babble something embarrassing, Myth advised.
"Have I mentioned lately that Myth is a very smart dragon? Because he is."
"Festival clothing?" Not that Tide was gonna complain about a change of clothing at the moment. Considering that her own was a little...Wet from her adventure in the surf. Though she almost declined the offer since in her mind, she could imagine these either bit poofy monstorities or long elegant evening gowns. She hadn't been to a lot of festivals so to speak and those she had been too generally didn't have clothing attached to them so she was using one of her former companions as a reference...The one that liked to think she was a living doll and dress her up accordingly.
That opinion quickly changed as Khareesh brough out the clothing in question. It was gorgeous! She reached out, sure the fish were alive and somehow just trapped in the fabric, but her hand connected not with scales, but with stitches. It was soft and cool. Her face was one of awe and a bit of fear. She had never worn anything like this before. It was a bit daunting you see.
"I cannot accept it Khareesh. It is-"
Nonsense Tide! He specifially said he had it made for you. Which means it is yours and do you really want to leave him in that awkward situation where he has to explain? She knew how much Tide loved it and also how much she was afraid to have it.
Tide blinked and decided that no. No she did not. That didn't stop her cheeks from heating up as she gave Khareesh a wide smile. "Yes. Yes he is. Though apparently not the only smart dragon on this beach today."
"Indeed not," Khareesh agreed with a salute to Lenaarth. "We were both incredibly fortunate and well-partnered on the Hatching Sands that day, to have Impressed as we did. Myth and Lenaarth are both very bright dragons."
Couldn't always say that for the Pern-bloods, though the Mottles tended to be savvier. Usually. Though there were some dragon pairs in Khareesh and Myth's general weyrling class that could be considered terribly exceptional, and not in a good way.
You'll both want to change before we go, Myth advised. I hear it's best to be dressed -before- you show up to a festival! No really you're both wet now and that won't be good for you whether we fly straight or go between.
Khareesh snorted. "Ah. Yes. I had been planning to ask if you'd prefer to dress here or there, but Myth makes a good point. Or two."
Not to mention, even with illogical field involvement, the desert still becomes very cold and chill at night. She didn't exactly preen under the praise, but she came really close to it. Really though, given the chance, she would shoo them both off right now so she could get back to painting and Tide would finally have a date on this world. Though both riders might protest the label on such an outing, Lenaarth was almost one hundred percent positive that is what it was. Almost. There was always room to be a little unsure. But when it was ninety nine point a bunch of nines sure? It left very little wiggle room at all.
Nodding, Tide took the clothing as if it was the most fragile thing in the world. Needless to say, she had never encounter silk to begin with or she would know just how wrong of a thought that was. "Plus we know of places to change here. I do not know of any such places to change in the desert and not to mention..." Tide paused as she felt her cheeks heat up. "I would not know how to wear this garment as I have my doubts it is as simple as sliding it over my head and calling it done."
Though that didn't she would have any qualms about changing right here and now. Despite being a bit self conscious about her scars, she actually never had much of a problem changing in front of people, rather they be male, female, or anything in between. Fast was basically the name of the game at that point and she was both fast and really not all that shy about it. Sure. She may have issues with how her body looked, but when you grew up in a place that grouped everyone together simply by age and not so much by anything else, it was real easy to get over worrying about how others were going to judge her body. If they were, they were and she had learned long ago, there was nothing she could do about it.
"Though that is a good question that Myth brings up. Are we flying or just going in between?"
"Well, between is certainly faster," Khareesh mused, "but it's early afternoon yet. And the true beauty of the Year's End doesn't begin until evening."
You with the thumbs might want to help Tide with that sash, K'reesh, Myth advised. And then, perhaps, a straight flight. It's a nice enough day, and there's time to burn yet before the festivities really start.
"It's not a complicated garment, once you have it...uh, actually fully extracted from the saddlebag. Right. Sorry, that would help." Khareesh slid the bottom hems out from under something else and let the full garment sweep down into Tide's grasp. Simple, robe-like, the yukata was an appropriated import from one of those other worlds that frequently seemed to lose people to Teragaia. The most complicated part would be the sash, holding the entire affair together and shaping it accordingly.
K'reesh says a yu-ka-ta is closest to what the Water Clan tribes wear for their festival garb, Myth helpfully supplied, though he sounded out the foreign word with no sense of context. What was clothing to a dragon, after all? He didn't need to say it out loud, but he also thought it was nice and ambiguously shaped around the bust. Wouldn't require any invasive measurements to be comfortable to wear.
"Oh, really? And this is relevant information why?"
Oh, don't mind me. I'm just being helpful.
"Oh, yes, Myth, so very helpful." Khareesh sighed, and then laughed. "Well, he isn't wrong."
Tide blushed deeper and mumbled a quick thank you. Though Myth's explanation had her blinking and looking down at her own bust. Even as she heard Lenaarth's soft, yet deep laughter rolling around in her head. "Well, I am not exactly large by any means, so I am sure it will fit just fine." She had no idea that it was actually made with her measurements and would fit more than just fine. It would fit her perfectly.
"Just because he is not wrong, does not mean the information was helpful in the end. Though why would invasive measurements be need for clothing?" Needless to say that Tide had never had tailored made clothing before and while she did know of them, it slipped her mind just how many measurements were involved in the act of making clothing.
"Are you coming with us Lenaarth?" Tide looked over at the Bronze mottle who had laid her head down and closed her eyes.
Not really if that is okay. It would give you and Khareesh time to talk if you both ride on Myth and it would give me time to finish the painting I started. See! Myth wasn't the only one that could be helpful from time to time. Or at least attempt to be helpful from time to time.
"Do I get to see it when it is done?"
Only if you promise not to be upset at it.
"Okay..." Tide just looked confused for a moment before shrugging. Looking back at Khareesh, she gave him a smile. "So what do you say? Think Myth could handle the both of us or should I attempt to convince Lenaarth otherwise?"
"Some fashion stylings require very, very invasive measurements," Khareesh supplied idly, apropos of nothing, really. It was completely unnecessary fluff conversation and he was aware of that before the words even left his mouth.
But, when has the wind ever been known to miss a chance to blow? Equally, an air genasi could rarely miss an opportunity to speak, no matter how inanely.
It was then, of course, that Tide took a playful shot at Myth's ego and he took the bait up to the sinker.
Have you forgotten riding me with K'reesh so soon, Tidesweep? You wound me! Not really, no worries, but wild blue dragons and their Pern-blooded offspring, Myth well included, were full of hot air. Then again, that was months ago. I'm even larger now, you know. Strongest blue of our Hatching!
"Jananth."
You, K'reesh, are a traitor.
"I just think you should say you're one of the strongest blues. You can be an amazing dragon without devaluing anyone else's accomplishments, you know."
Why you- ... ... ...you're baiting me.
"Of course! You've been baiting me all day, love, it's only fair."
Hrrmnmrgh. The dragon was momentarily quiet after the mental equivalent of loudly swallowing marbles. He looked out to the sea, and then back down to his rider and Tide. I can very well carry you, Tidesweep. I'll be happy to.
"And I can help you with the sash, if you would like. And if you would help me with mine. I'm afraid I selected garments that only fasten from the *back*."
"Remind me to ask you which ones then so I will know to avoid them." Chuckling, she did appreciate the information though that quiet chuckle quickly turned into a full blown laugh at the ensuring conversation. "I did not mean to imply anything Myth! Of course you are one of the best!" Maybe hanging about Khareesh was a good thing as she carefully, since she was now carrying an armful of very nice clothing and was still a bit wet, put her arm around his shoulders. Though maybe also learning from story books and some of the weyr's more...Touchy feely residents wasn't a good thing. "You have a very capable rider in Khareesh."
Tide honestly wasn't trying to flirt or anything of that sort. It was doubtful she even knew how to flirt and usually just did genuine compliments, unaware that was a type of flirting...If you squinted.
"After all, from what I am starting to understand, a dragon or rider is only one half of a duo. You cannot really have one without the other." That wasn't quite true either, but give her some points for trying at least. Though very few points there.
"I just did not want to assume you could take us both as I do not know how far we would be traveling and expecting you to carry two of us would not be fair to you. No matter how capable you are." Laughing, she grinned at the two, though it quickly became a frown as Khareesh stated that the sashes would need to be tied by each other. Not that she found that suspicious in the least at all. Her concern was for an entirely different reason.
"I do not know if I can tie the right knots, but I will sure give it a go."
Better be careful, K'reesh. This one's even more charming than you are. You have competition!
Khareesh pulled a face at his dragon, but it was entirely in good fun. Mostly he was trying not to fall over with the whole head-spinning thing because Tide had some Very Nice things to say about him and also have we mentioned that our Khareesh is a cuddle-bug who enjoys contact? He is, and does. So he was entirely happy to re-shape his posture to angle himself into Tide as she put an arm around him.
And then, lest Khareesh's ego actually feel un-kicked for a bit, She's smarter than you, too, K'reesh. Pretty sure she wouldn't have picked clothing she'd need help getting on. Not that I entirely understand clothing, but it seems you humanoids -usually- like to be able to dress independently.
"Oh, usually," Khareesh, rolling along. "Usually, people are thinking about more than just the aesthetic -- that's the quality of how something looks, Myth -- and that's about where I fell short this time. But! On the bright side, a yukata or, in my case, informal kimono, fairly easy to get into. I can, uh, turn away, if you'd like some privacy for the actual changing part."
He could even stand away, if Tide didn't want the wind blowing at her clothing while she was changing. Side effect of being what he was. Always brought the wind with him.
"I would not exactly say I am competition. What is the competition again?" Yep. Didn't even know what sort of competition was going on or even that they were competing for something.
Give him some credit though Myth. Tide wouldn't have been able to pick out such gorgeous ones. Even if they are a little difficult to get into.
Tide nodded, grinning, not in the least bit insulted by that. She knew her eye for color was...Way under an average person's let alone Lenaarth's.
The cloth would go up against the Bronze's foreleg to keep it off the sand as she started to tug on her own clothes to change into the dry one. "Hmm? Why would you do that since you would just have to turn back to help me with the back?" The tank top came off and she held it in her hands, just staring at him. Then the light bulb went off in her head, though not for quite the right scenario.
"You should probably show me how to tie the sash first so I can at least see sorta of how it is suppose to look. Unless it is hard to tie it when it is not on someone and then I am sure Lenaarth would be happy to give a play by play of it."
You are mixing in sports metaphors for fashion points Tide my dear. Not exactly the worst mix up you have done though. I will be happy to give the play by play as you say. Though you may want to finish getting dress first if that is the case.
"Point...Very good point." Though she would wait to see what the best route would be there. Either way, she would be bound and determined not to have her sash end up the right way and his being...Nothing but knots.
I'm pretty sure Maurice wouldn't let Tide walk out of his shop with something that wouldn't look good on her, Myth posited, ever so helpful. I never knew zombies were so... fashionable. Or obsessive about fabric.
"Maurice is a special case," Khareesh sighed. "But Myth, if you could lend me your nose for a bit?"
My nose?
"Rather the great big horn you have on it. I'd appreciate some help showing how to tie the sashes."
Every time I think I'm winning, you come up with something I don't expect, Myth grumbled, but he put his face down where Khareesh could reach the base of the Blue Mottle's nose horn.
"Thank you, heart mine. Anyway, Tide, your sash will tie something like this..." Khareesh looped the wide expanse of fabric around Myth's horn and tied it in an efficient and artful bow with a squared center. It was something of a boxy design, but still attractive in its way. "Mine's a little more challenging because mine's not meant to be seen, so it'll tuck under the kimono parts proper, and the knots will go something like this..." His was more of a belt than a sash, an inch wide instead of the five inches of Tide's sash (there was a proper name for it, but he couldn't recall it off the top of his head).
So yours ties almost the same way, just less decoratively. I think. Myth's contentedly-whirling blue-green eyes were apparently crossed as the dragon attempted to look at his own nose.
"Pretty much, yes. And there will be much less slack once it's on me, of course. I'm wider than your horn."
You just left yourself open for SO MANY fat jokes, K'reesh. I just thought you needed to know that.
