Myth sighed the sigh of a deeply aggrieved dragon, but relented. Very well. But only if you pick it, Tidesweep. You are a very wise and kind person.
Khareesh grinned, squeezing Tide's fingers back affectionately. "He has a point."
With his free hand he exchanged jadas for festival food, fish wrapped in a kind of flatbread that made it easy to eat and walk, passing one to Tide and taking one for himself. Water Clan tribes tended to spice their fish such that even Khareesh had to admit it had a bit of a bite (read: the heat could strip paint) but damn if it wasn't amazing.
"The fireworks are quite safe to handle," Khareesh explained after a hastily chewed and swallowed bite -- nerves worked up an appetite -- and a few walked steps from the food stall and back into the bazaar. "Sandclay casing keeps your hands safe. You never come into contact with the chemicals or the heat."
Another bite, this one chewed more slowly because the flatbread was earthy and rich, the fish was tender, the spices were studies in volcanic deliciousness, a total culinary portrait of perfection, and it was half-off.
"And I can tell Rashana plenty, yes," Khareesh agreed, after swallowing. "Some good, some not. She's going to want souvenirs from this, probably. And we should find that headdress for Myth. It would be a marvelously distracting endeavor and I think we should find our way back to the festival mood after what the honored Salt Eel shared."

Tide took the fish carefully, blowing on it just a bit to cool off some of that just off the fire heat. Not sure how it was gonna taste, she took a small bite and her eyes widen in surprise. It was spicy and, to her at least, a little sweet. Grinning, she took slightly bigger bite as she walked alongside Khareesh. "I would be happy to pick out your new attire for the evening Myth. I promise to not make it too much of an eyesore."
She laughed lightly, knowing that was a promise she could keep. While her sense of taste was off from what most consider normal, she could tell colors just fine.
"Oh yes! I may need to pick her up something as well. As a thank you gift for her getting you to ask me to accompany you here. " the smile on her face was bright as she studied the stalls as they passed them by, her eyes trying to take in everything and failing to. Didn't mean she still wouldn't try.
"Hmm...While that does sound safe, I think I will leave the fireworks and their makings to those that know better."

Khareesh managed to chomp down most of the rest of his fish wrap while Tide spoke, though swallowing it was difficult when it came to be his turn to speak. Advantage, free hand again, disadvantage, he nearly choked himself before he figured out how to swallow in portions.
"Bleh, I should try eating slower. Food this good should be enjoyed. But!" Khareesh swallowed a few more times, on the bright side the spices ensured his salivary glands were working overtime and getting everything out of his throat was relatively easy. "This stall over here has some of the pull-cord fireworks. Let's get some!"
He started guiding Tide to an easy-up of golden sheer, beneath which was a table of small clay ball-things with string ripcords hanging from their bases. There were other types of explosives -- the benign and fun kind, of course, colored smoke bombs, noise poppers, things like that -- but Khareesh guided Tide to the pile of round sandclay pots.
The water genasi running the stand winked at Khareesh, seeing that he'd brought an outsider to her stall. "Fair winds and fine fortune, son of the Dune Eagle! Some of the pull-cord fireworks are imports from your tribe, if you're feeling homesick."
Khareesh lit up. "You must mean Varassa's special Picture-Poppers! Now I have to take a few of those." He turned to Tide, grinning like a maniac. "Varassa has a way with making these so that when you set them off, they explode into dazzling images. Flowers, animals, symbols, things like that."
He neglected to mention things like Varassa was his cousin, but that wasn't precisely important. In the tribes, everyone was someone's cousin.

Tide didn't even bother to hide the laugh as Khareesh suffered the consequences of eating too fast. If he had been in true danger of choking, she would have done something, but he wasn't so therefore, she was free to laugh. She was only about halfway through her fish wrap as Khareesh guided her towards the fireworks stand. The comment about some of them being from his tribe had Tide curious. "So each tribe has different ways of making these pops?"
She thought the pictures sounded lovely and she couldn't wait to see what they would be once cracked open. "Do you know how Varassa does it, or is it more like trade secrets? Or it might be burnable wire in the shapes..." she was soon just a little lost in her musings, her mind trying to figure out the puzzle of how one was made. Not that she still wouldn't enjoy the outcome, even if she never configure out how it worked.

"..."
You have no idea, do you, K'reesh. Clever clever Myth wasn't asking.
"To be completely fair, though, I am a textiles and leatherwork kind of Dune Eagle!" Khareesh protested, and he would have looked like a lunatic shouting at himself if Myth was not the kind of dragon who thought nothing of broadcasting his mindspeech for everyone.
Usually. Myth was not necessarily a discreet dragon.
Does the how of it truly matter tonight? Lharsizi queried, landing gently on Tidesweep's shoulder. Tonight should be about celebration and love, both of which we see in abundance, I think. Another hour until the wedding ceremony, plenty of time to make some treasured memories of your own. I rather fancy that green one, Khareesh.
Khareesh picked up the firework, green dye worked into the sandclay before it had hardened to give it its distinctive color visible beneath the glimmering of magic lights, more of which were beginning to light up as the sun sank at the horizon. The base of it bore the Dune Eagle's stamp, and Varassa's personal crest.
"I believe I do too. I think I'll take this one, and some of these...any you find interesting in particular, Tide?"
And whether she suspected or not, Tidesweep needn't worry about cost. Khareesh was the kind of industrious hard worker who always found paying jobs and he'd been saving up for this festival for some time.

Another laugh broke out at the interaction between dragon and rider. Feeling a weight on her shoulder, she turned to look at the kinder of Khareesh's new companions. "Nope! But they are fasincating to try and figure out, but I do not need to know how they work to enjoy them. Much like Khareesh." That wasn't meant to be a jab, just a United front in the clueless department.
At the question, Tide looked at all the sand pots. There were all different colors but the one that caught her eye was a simple one. This one had been left to dry naturally and just seem to hint at a surprise. Picking that one up, and letting go of Khareesh 's hand as a result since she still had most of a wrap, she held it in her hand. "I like this one."

That's not nearly enough fireworks, K'reesh!
"If you think I'm not saving a little bit of money for that headdress, you're wrong~"
Sod.
Interaction with Myth aside, Khareesh was glowing all sorts of warm and fuzzies, hearing what Tide had to say as she conversed with Lharsizi. And of the two strange new birds that seemed to be pieces of him, he was glad it was the mourning dove and not the cuckoo that had alighted upon Tide's shoulder.
"I'll be taking that one too," Khareesh told the water genasi running the stall, gesturing to the one Tide held. "And all of these." He slid his selection of sandclay pots and corded bottles to the side of the displays and across the tables for the merchant to count up and price for him.
She grinned. "Just enough to fill some time before the real fireworks begin, hmm? Twenty jadas, and I hope you have fun with these. The stalls will still be open after the wedding ceremony, so you don't have to rush to buy that headdress to embarrass your dragon with."
Khareesh laughed. Myth did not.
A visual aid The round ones are made from sandclay and not stained leather, and the cords are longer because they're ripcords and not fuses. But these were the inspiration behind some of the fireworks, at least visually, you can thank Skyrim mods. ^^

The food Tide could understand Khareesh. It was a, sort of date? And besides, if she hadn't liked it she could have just passed it off to him. The firework nearly got a protest out of her though. Nearly. Till she realized that even if she took away the firework and put it in a different pile, it wouldn't have put a dent in the amount that Khareesh was already buying. So in order to make sure she kept her mouth shut and not protest even weakly, she took a bit of her wrap and just watched the exchange.
A laugh did escape her mouth at the vendor's comment. "Oh! Come now Myth! Maybe you might catch a certain dragon's eye if you know...You had something eyecatching on." Not that Myth would have needed anything to catch Lenaarth's eye other than amazing flying skills. But it couldn't hurt to put the thought in his head. Maybe he wouldn't fight it nearly as much...Maybe.

...Do you really think she'll like it? Myth's voice had gone from begrudging to almost hopeful in an instant, and Khareesh did his utmost to not laugh and spoil the mood for his dragon.
He paid for the fireworks in turquoise jadas, and the stall manager packed the fireworks into a cloth satchel for ease of carrying.
"Around the rock formation that way," she pointed to the other side of the bazaar, where a cluster of huge boulders jutted up out of the ground like the fangs of the earth itself, "is a popular spot for these normally, but with all the locals expecting the big ones, I expect you'll have the privacy to really have some fun with the little ones."
Myth leapt into the air and sailed over to the mentioned rock formation, landing behind it where Khareesh and presumably Tide could no longer see him.
Nobody back here, Myth reported, but there are a lot of scorch marks and bits of broken pottery.
Khareesh took the satchel, thanking the merchant, and then shouldered his burden before rejoining Tide, holding an arm out for her to take. "Shall we wander that way, then? ...and nice work, by the way, suggesting he dazzle Lenaarth with the headdress. I almost thought he wouldn't cooperate but now he might even wear it long enough for Lenaarth to paint a portrait."
And if rider was grinning at dragon's expense, well, it was harmless fun.

"Only really way to find out now is there?" Ah! So there was someone. Really, Tide was just taking a shot in the dark. It seemed to have paid off though as Myth sounded much more receptive of the idea of strutting around in a feather headdress. Score one for the Flarean.
At Myth's confirmation that the spot was indeed empty, Tide smiled and took Khareesh's arm. "Oh? You think so? That would be wonderful! She is always looking for new models and I think Myth would suit just fine for that. And yes! I want to see what kind of pictures pop out of the pots." She finally finished the rest of her fish wrap and so linked the now free arm with the arm that was linked with Khareesh's. Like closing a chain link. "Lead the way!"

Khareesh didn't even bother hiding the happy glow to his features when Tide finished polishing off her snack and joined arms with him. Just being close to her was fulfilling, in its way.
"Right this way!"
The desert native led the way quite cheerfully, though with zero rush, simply enjoying the time he spent in Tide's company, until their path took them around the giant curved rock fangs that made almost a half a dome cupped away from the oasis tribal encampment, quite perfect for shielding the homesteads from any accidental kabooming. Myth had made himself comfortable behind the wall of rock, nosing debris around in the sand.
You said the fireworks were packed in clay, but I found glass as well, the blue mottle observed, balancing a blasted-out piece of bottle on the tip of his bone nose horn, eyes whirling a curious turquoise.
"Bottle poppers," Khareesh explained, and squeezed Tide's arm affectionately for a moment before reluctantly letting go of her so he could unshoulder his satchel. He pulled a pair of bottles capped off with waxed canvas out of the bag, holding them up for both Tidesweep and Myth to see. "These are usually extremely difficult to set off. One person has to throw them, and the other has to be a really good shot with a sling or an arrow or a bullet or some kind of magical bolt and then it's still not the perfect release of what is truly a spectacular firework." Even Khareesh has to breathe after a runon sentence like that. "Actually, I bought these for you, Myth. I had the thought that a dragon's breath, particularly your lightning, would show these off to their finest and fullest potential." And then, with a playful and fond glance over to Tide, "And just think how much Tidesweep will tell Lenaarth about this if it all goes well and you impress us with your incredible skill, Myth-my-heart~"
There was a certain point at which Myth knew he was being manipulated, but the bait was too much to refuse. The trap was simply too well set. That one drawback of having given his name to Khareesh back when he'd broken shell that fateful day. He'd Impressed on a savvy son of a cloud-hopping twister and sometimes that meant getting outwitted by his rider.
Challenge accepted, K'reesh. You had better throw them high, though. But first, I want to see what a picture firework looks like. I have never seen such a thing and I want to.
"Fair enough," Khareesh conceded, chuckling. He knelt down in the debris-cluttered sand, setting aside the bottle-poppers for the moment, and pulling out the sandclay pots with rip-cords. "Here we have the Picture Poppers," he explained, holding out some of the ones crafted by his cousin away from the others. "From what I understand of their construction, there is a glass vial of a substance inside, packed inside of another substance inside the pot, and the cord is tied around the vial. Pull the cord, break the vial, substances mix, and you've got as much time as it takes to throw the firework before it goes off. How the pictures get made is beyond my understanding, I'm afraid, but I know how to set them off. Here, I'll show you."
Khareesh stood with one of his cousin's creations in hand, yanked the cord out with a snapped crunch that made the firework begin to hiss, and flung it up and away. A good throw, Khareesh was fairly athletic, even his darkvision almost lost it in the growing gloom in the four seconds of airtime it got before it exploded into a multi-colored butterfly, the russet and cinnamon body framed by emerald and sapphire wings that actually seemed to flap in their shimmering, lights dancing in the darkness.
Ooooh...

Tide laughed as she noticed that Khareesh took a page from her book regarding Myth. Mention her bronze and he was like a puddle in their hands. On some level, she knew he probably suspected what they were doing and...He just didn't care. She figured as long as it wasn't anything too outrageous, they were fine. Aiming for and breaking open bottle crackers really didn't seem that out there.
Settling back as she remember just how many poppers that Khareesh had picked up, she was careful to pick an area that was mostly free of debris at least. As the first one lit up the sky, her eyes grew wide and a soft 'ah' escaped her lips at the sight. "That is gorgeous Khareesh!"

Khareesh grinned, holding out another of the picture poppers, the one Tide herself had chosen from the fireworks display stand. The butterfly took its sweet time fading out into after-images of light and color, leaving behind the impression of beauty and wonder embossed upon the air.
"Isn't it just?" he agreed, letting the sight of Tidesweep's joy wash away the distress of the omen in the cordial and the Salt Eel's revelations. "There was... there was no way I could have not shared this with you, Tide. Myth and Rashana certainly kicked me into inviting you faster, but I don't think I could have lived with myself had I not brought you here. There is too much beauty and too much wonder in this desert. It isn't all the Valley of Mummies."
Tide's Fireworks Go crazy, yo, whatever kind of picture you want to draw. Starfish, sailboat, phoenix, you picked it, you pick it!
And any other fireworks you want to set off. Khareesh's cousin is pretty inventive, so...have fun!

Tide took her firework and eyed the area in the sky where the butterfly had finally faded. She didn't know if she could throw it quite that far, but she was willing to bet she could at least get it a safe distance away. Otherwise, her or Khareesh would become a guest at the Weyr Hospital instead of at the wedding that would be happening soon. And that would just be rude after they were invited!
Weighing it in her hand, she judged that if she tossed it just this way, she would be successful in meeting the safety distance. So almost asked if Khareesh could throw it after she pulled the cord before deciding that half the fun of these type of fireworks was in the throwing. "Okay...Here goes nothing..." Yanking the cord a bit harder than she meant too, she fumbled the sandclay pot for a precious second. Luckily, it was only that one second and she was able to lob it into the air for it to explode and light up the sky. While not as far as Khareesh's throw, it was far enough for Tide to admire the picture that appeared.
And what a picture it was! It wasn't a sea creature, which was just fine with Tide actually. While she did love sea life, she could acknowledge that the sea didn't hold everything beautiful. This picture popper and the one before it for example. This popper showed a sphinx, on their hind legs and wings flared. It was done in yellows and oranges with a hint of blue along the edges of the wings. Almost like it was flapping against the blue sky. It was gorgeous. It was powerful. It had Tide grinning from ear to ear and reaching out to tug at Khareesh's hand like a happy child as she looked up at the sky.
"That was wonderful!" Grinning, she tilted her head at the air gensai, thinking for a moment before answering. "The Valley of Mummies is beautiful in its own way. It is beautiful in its danger. In the fact that it is a place that you do not go too lightly. It has a wonder that is different than this, but a wonder nonetheless. It is like some of the more venomous and poisonous species on Flare or even Planet or here too! They are beautiful in their deadliness. So you did not need to show me this to show me the beauty and wonder of the desert. You already have by just yourself and the Valley."
She reached out and hugged him, playfully snagging a couple more of the poppers as she did so. She would gladly give them back to Khareesh if he protested the mini theft, but there was just so many and surely if they timed it just right, they could make a story in the sky by lighting too at once...Right?
"I do thank you for showing me a different side of the desert. One that is softer and cooler than the Valley of Mummies. I cannot wait to see what else you will decide to share with me." No. That was a flirt, that genuine curiosity. Though it may have come off as a bit of a flirt...Just a bit.

"Oh, Tide," Khareesh sighed, expression melting just a little bit. Even he realized he probably looked exactly as lovestruck as he was. "Tidesweep, I want to share everything with you. Every festival, every oasis, every remnant of civilizations past, every sunrise. This desert is not all of what I am now, but it is all of what I was before I met you and Myth, and I want to show you all of it."
He watched her take the fireworks mid hug, expression pulling into a grin as he moved the satchel to where it would be easier for Tide to access it.
"You know, sometimes the picture poppers are easier to throw quickly underhand," Khareesh suggested, because while his own throw had been graceful...his shoulder now hurt as if he'd tweaked something he should not have trying to throw overhand at that angle. "They go up better that way."
Khareesh held up one of the bottle poppers. "But before we see if we can match that sphinx for beauty, I would like to see Myth give us a show. What say you, heart-of-my-heart?"
After all of that...I will be very grumpy if you don't toss those bottles for me, K'reesh.
The air genasi chuckled, and did exactly that, lobbed one of the bottles underhand -- much easier on his shoulder -- high up into the air. Myth arched his neck up, inhaled, and blew, spraying cone of vivid lightning out of his mouth. It obliterated the bottle in one clean, bright blast, and then stopped, sending a reverberation of thunder across the desert and a shower of spiraling lights down upon Myth, Khareesh, and Tide. It was like a small rainstorm made entirely of lights, and it began to roll across the entire oasis, spreading like a natural storm.
Khareesh hugged Tide to him, pointing up at the billowing silver fog raining drops of pale blue light down to the salt flats. "Now THAT is how a bottle popper should go off! I knew you had to see this!"
