Ok, time for a reboot of the Haven Enigma!

The Enigma will be (for the now) a bi-monthly event, on the first and third Tuesday/Wednesday of the month (namely when Kay is off work so I have time to do this thing, lol!). It will consist of Off-Site topics (saving the on-site for the Shamrock Pub Quiz), and will have variable prizes based off of how difficult I feel the question is. You will have a single guess (unless otherwise stated) that should be PM'd to me.

This Riddle is worth 12BP, for the Twelve Days of Christmas, lol!

Hoar Frost, a type of frost that occurs on surfaces that are colder than the frost point in the air around them, so water goes straight from vapor to solid. and forms a spiky, fluffy snow, has a rather descriptive name. Why is is called 'Hoar Frost?'

What are three other names for 'Santa Claus?' ('Santa' by itself does not count, nor does 'Mr. Claus,' or 'Sandy Claws' thank you Nightmare Before Christmas lol!)

Answer: Among many others:
St. Nicholas, Kris/Kriss Kringle, Nicholas Clause, Father Christmas, Sinterklaas, Weihnmachtsmann, Christkind and Nikolaus.

Thank you to Tidesweep, Belial, Retsom, and Miunari for the correct answers! Your BP is being awarded.
Note: Until further stated, Scarheart, Belial, and Cassandra have standing permission to powerplay Raferties or Anari.

Dec 19th

Although no longer functioning under its original name, this company is well known for making many stop-motion holiday movies from 1964 until 1987 when its production arm shut down. Among the movies are ones about a musically-inclined little boy, a long-eared donkey, the adventures had by Santa during his life, and many, many about the most famous reindeer of all (and that's just the Christmas ones!), often using the voice talents of such names as Fred Astaire, Mickey Rooney, and Angela Lansbury.

Answer: Rankin-Base

Correct Answers: None.
Note: Until further stated, Scarheart, Belial, and Cassandra have standing permission to powerplay Raferties or Anari.

My apologies for this being delayed!

Contrary to legend and popular belief, Dom Pérignon did not invent sparkling wine, though he did make important contributions to the production and quality of both still and sparkling Champagne wines. What group actually invented the oldest recorded sparkling wine?

Answer:

"Contrary to legend and popular belief, Dom Pérignon did not invent sparkling wine, though he did make important contributions to the production and quality of both still and sparkling Champagne wines.[6][7] The oldest recorded sparkling wine is Blanquette de Limoux, which was apparently invented by Benedictine Monks in the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire, near Carcassonne in 1531." - Wikipedia source

Correct Answers:

Belial - 1 SC partial credit. While you got the abbey correctly, as stated above by Wikipedia 'Blanquette de Limoux' was the name of the wine itself.

Please remind me if this is not tabulated in by my next days off for me to do so!

Well, given this is the month of love, hearts, and chocolate, lets have a themed question!

According to Legend, what was Saint Valentine killed for doing?

For Double Points: How was he slain, and who ordered it?

Answer: He was killed for marrying people in secret after it was banned by being beheaded, and Emperor Claudius II (or Claudius the Cruel) ordered both the ban and the execution.

Correct Answer: Belial (both parts, so 10 SC!)

This question is worth 17SC, in honor of the day!

Top o' the mornin' to ya! It's around this time that we celebrate St. Patrick's Day both here in the States and Abroad. So here's a themed question for you to ponder over: Everyone has probably heard the term 'Shamrock' before; there's even a tavern and Inn in Haven named after the clover. But how many leaves does a Shamrock actually have?

Answer: Despite the famed luck of a four-leaf clover, a Traditional Shamrock has only THREE leaves.

Correct Answers: Tidesweep, Telmaril, and Belial

Please be aware, there is some issue with Weebly at the moment, so I cannot award your SC as I need to. Please remind me later to check and ensure things are fixed so I can. I have contacted Weebly about this, so hopefully it won't take too long.

This round's riddle is worth 25BP.

Everyone has likely heard the term 'Fabrege Egg.' A very few were even made specifically for Emperors, and were known as 'Imperial Eggs.' So here's my question:
Of all the Imperial Eggs made, how many are still in existence today?

Answer: House of Fabergé made 50 such "Imperial" Easter eggs, of which 43 have now numbered as extant (in other words, still around today).

Some of them sure are beautiful!

Correct Answer: Absent, Telmaril

Mayday Mayday Mayday!

I'm sure everyone's heard that frantic cry in movies and video games. But I have to wonder...

Where did the term 'Mayday' come from?

Answer: The Mayday procedure word was originated in 1923, by a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London.[1] The officer, Frederick Stanley Mockford, was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word "Mayday" from the French "m'aider", a shortened version of "venez m'aider" (meaning "come and help me").[2]

Well, looks like I stumped you this time! No one dared try to answer. Better luck next go!

This Puzzle is worth 10SC:

It's no stretch of imagination to understand how 'July' could be named for Julius Ceasar, and this month was actually his month of birth. But before Ceasar, what was 'July' called?

Answer: July previously was called Quintilis.

Correct: Miunari

Congratulations! Your SC will be awarded shortly.

This rather tasty riddle is worth 20BP:

Going to a BBQ is a staple of many July traditions in America, and the centerpiece of this event is always the Grill itself.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, what is the largest barbecue in the world, and where was this thing made?

Bonus 15BP: What was cooked on it when its size was verified?

Answer:

Who
Discovery Channel BIG!
What
15/3.75/20/2.25/8 metre(s)
Where
United States (Santa Clarita)
When
20 June 2004

The largest barbecue in the world, unveiled on 20 June 2004, was built on Discovery Channel's BIG! television show and measures 15 ft 3.75 in (4.66 m) high, 20 ft 2.25 in (6.14 m) wide and 8 ft (2.43 m) deep. The grill is 96 sq ft, 12 ft wide and 8 ft deep. Without the wooden side 'worktops', the barbecue itself measures 12 ft 1.75 in. At the unveiling the barbecue was used to cook a whole pig, a ten-foot hotdog and four turkeys.

Correct Answers: Allowing partial credit to Retsom, who answered with the longest grill according to the world record keepers, which was 8,000 m (20,246 ft) and was created by the people of Bayambang, (Philippines), in Bayambang, Pangasinan, Philippines on 4 April 2014. The record attempt took place during the Malangsi Fish-tival in order to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the city Bayambang. Thus they likely cooked fish on it. Retsom will receive 18BP - half the award - for finding this equally massive grill!

Who knew world records were so tricky!
