Skeleton and Fae go on a trip!; For Cain via Tide

The Firemane spun back at the sound of the whistle and the Familiar's chittering. While it wanted more screams, the hunger that had ended its life was relentless, and there was a fleshy meal right there. The spirit, frothing ethereal at the mouth and eyes rolling white, reared and screamed a challenge again, then charged... and missed! The boned one was far faster than the undead thing had expected!

Then came the grapple, the twist –and now it was the skeleton equine's turn to scream in very real pain as the bone snapped, made brittle by the old injury and the passage of time. Just as it would have done were it living, the beast of a hell horse flailed, buckling on the spot and almost kicking and landing on Cain in practically the same movement save for Cain's own quick reflexes. It tried to rise, furiously neighing out its impotent rage at an enemy that likely wasn't even on the premises anymore (or alive to take vengeance upon, at the very least), but could only kick out its front legs and its one hide, snapping at anything that came within reach of its mouth. The hind leg, the load-bearing limbs, were truly vital to its mobility and threat level and Cain had just taken that away. But still the beast refused to surrender to the inevitable, to the great beyond. Perhaps the Servant of Death would have to perform his duty here in more ways than one.

Taki, meanwhile, was curled up in a tiny, shaking ball in the stall, her cries diminishing to whimpers as her mind desperately tried to disengage from the emotional connection she'd made and for one of the first times ever in her five seasons of existence finding the mental focus abandoning her. Like a tidal wave it was hitting into her normally iron-solid defenses again and again, and she couldn't get them up high enough to rally. From beneath her hat Journeyman was murmuring to her, trying to help soothe and through contact offer what aid he could.

Cain looked at the fallen firemane with a pity that he rarely showed. It was done for. Dead. Broken at this point really and yet it refused to move on. The skeleton couldn't even admire the stubbornness as all it was doing was causing the creature more pain and suffering. Of course, the amount of pity he actually felt wasn't all that much. After all, this beast had hurt Taki and he didn't take too kindly for that.

"Time to go fiery one. Wish I could say it has been a pleasure but, it hasn't been." Pulling out his gun, he checked to make sure the appropriate bullet was in the chamber and clicked it shut. Aiming for the kill shot, he pulled the trigger and sent the horse on its way to finally join its master. Or that was the intention anyway.

Meanwhile, Brains hopped down from Cain's skull and skittered past the failing limbs and rotting hay to where Taki laid. Chittering at the feline fae, she reached out a paw and patted her cheek soothingly to help as well. Souna hovered above them all, keeping an eye out for anymore danger. Just in case there was were more ghost manes hanging about.

One loud, final bang and it was over. The bones have a shuddering tremble and collapsed into an inert pile. The ghostly apparition of a Firemane lurched, then pulled itself up separate of its bones and after a quick wheeling about, seeming unnoticing of Cain, sprang of into the sky and vanished with a flick of flame in its wake.

Taki had jerked when the final shot was taken, but now had gone still. For a moment it might look to Brains that the fae was sleeping save for the fact that her eyes were half-opened, but her breathing would be easy. The poodle moth Bonded crawled his way out from under her hat, antenna waving about nervously as it seemed Taki want responding to even him. But a positive sign! When Brains touched her cheek the tip of her tall flicked slightly.

I'm so sorry! the voice from the Orb exclaimed in the first few moments of quiet. I had no idea that beast wss still here in any form or i would've warned you. I...haven't been out of this prison in quite some time it seems. He did sound contrite, even worried, at least.

"Really now?" Sarcasm dripped from Cain's mouth as he put his gun away. It was hiding some relief though as the ghost of the firemane finally moved on to...Well, whatever a firemane would consider a better place. Probably would be considered hell by anyone else's standard. Screaming. Fire. Plenty of meat to eat.

Okay. That last one didn't sound so bad at least.

"What was your first clue? The overgrown grounds, the torn down stables or the lovely firemane we just saw? Cause if it was the later, than I've got news for ya and it isn't good." The skeleton continued to speak as he moved to the stall where he had tossed Taki so she would be safe. He hadn't really heard anything from her since that painful, gut wrenching scream and he wondered if she was passed out or...

Entering the stall, the first thing he noticed was that she was still breathing. The open eyes, while an indication she was awake at least, wouldn't have told him what he desperately needed to know at this point. But that rising and falling chest plus the tail flick told him everything. For the most part anyway.

Straw pricked at his kneecap through his pants as he took a knee beside her and laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Taki? Sweetheart? Are ya okay or do ya need a minute?" He kept his voice pitched low and his emotions as calm and level headed as possible. No sense in worrying her by his own worry and concern. Not at the moment anyway.

No matter how long it took, he would wait patiently for Taki to respond. However if it took longer than a few minutes, he would sit down and get comfortable. Or as comfortable as he could with pokey straw under his butt and hard wood at his back. Once that was settle, he would gently draw Taki into his lap and comfort her till she was better.

All the while chiding himself for such a stupid decision and definitely taking the lesson with him. Never have Taki try to calm down an angry firemane. It was bad for your health.

The Voice went quiet as Cain gave it a justifiable berating, not trying to counter anything because, well, Cain was right and he knew it.

When Cain touched Taki's shoulder she gave a shuddering, almost hiccup of a breath, but still didn't move aside from her tail tip flipping again, once, before it went motionless again. So she seemed to be at least on some level aware of him, even she was otherwise locked in this state.

Moments turned into a minute, then two. Getting comfortable on straw perhaps wasn't the easiest thing ever even for a skeleton, but at the very least it gave some cushion from the stone floor beneath.

And a heartbeat after Cain drew Taki into his lap, her limbs as pliable as a rag doll, she gave another shuddering breath and all at once went limp, eyes fully closing and breath a little rapid for a bit before evening out. Her head turned of her own volition to nestle more against Cain's shoulder, and her tail curled around one arm.

*C-Cain?* Turquoise eyes slowly opened, blinked once, then twice, then looked up to find him, and she smiled as Journeyman did flips in the air above them. The Myrgwae blinked again, then smiled. *I knew you'd find me.* Her eyes closed again, and she leaned her head back down. *You – you sent him on, didn't you? It's what he wanted. He was angry because of all the 'bad people' that kept trying to grab him, and when he realized they killed his Bonded he wanted to get them back but they locked him in here and his master had fireproofed the stable a long time ago so he wouldn't burn it down, and he was trapped and starved. But he was just so mad! He wouldn't leave until they paid for what they did. I – I got lost in his anger. That's never happened before!* She trembled a bit, but calmed when she snuggled closer. *I knew you'd find me, though.*

Cain tightened his arms gently around Taki at the sound of his name, thankful that whatever trance she had been in, she was coming out of it. Her words were an interesting choice, but he didn't bother to point out that since he put her in here, of course he would find her. He suspected that wasn't the kind of found she had meant. "Aye. I did. I figured it was for the best for all involved." Almost absentmindedly, he gently stroked her back, trying to offer her more comfort.

Hearing the firemane's story, Cain almost felt some sympathy for the moved on beast. Almost. He had let his own anger blind him to the fact that Taki and Cain could have helped him get the payback he so desperately wanted. Instead of offering his services, even as a ghost, he had attacked them. Tried to eat them (which Cain couldn't exactly blame him for that one, hunger was a powerful force), and probably would have succeeded if it hadn't been for the Orb and Cain's own unique abilities.

"I will always find you Taki. Not even Death himself could stop me." He gave her a skeletal grin and a light tug on her hat with his free hand. "Just let me know when ya are ready to move on. Judging from that spirits reaction, we might be safe here for a bit. I doubt our lovely host would send anything in here for fear of the firemane destroying them. For all their power, a firemane is still a force to be reckoned with. Obviously."

A soft purr, more felt than heard really, would vibrate through Taki and into Cain as she rested and recovered, Cain's quip and the familiar hat-tug getting a giggle and a more lively tail flip.

*I think Death might wonder if his Servant went AWOL looking for a Myrgwae, hehe!* Though she didn't have a frame of reference for it, even the most simple contact with Cain was giving her her strength back, especially since she was picking up on his relief and his happiness. She remained cuddling up to him for about another minutes, gathering the last remnants of the Firemane's anger that lingered in her, balling it up, and empathically 'tossing it away' to fade into nothing, then she sat up a bit more. *I think – I think I'm okay now. That was just really, really scary! I wonder if that's what it feels like to not be in control? I've read that some Myrgwae can't control their powers too well.*

Well, the stables would now be cleared. That left the overgrown garden on the other side and the manor itself, as well as anything that might be around the back and out of sight.

"Possibly. But I think I can take that risk." He was glad to see she was doing better at least. He had been worried for a few seconds there on if she was ever going to be back to her cheerful self. He should have known that nothing could keep her down. At her question, Cain mused in thought for a moment or two before deciding that it was more rhetorical than actually wanting an answer. Didn't mean he wouldn't at least attempt to give her an answer. Or a statement anyway.

"I for one am glad ya are a Myrgwae who can control their powers. Though, how about next time we come across a firemane ghost, ya just duck out of sight and we won't try to dissipate the anger again. Or hunger. Or sorrow. Or whatever the damn thing is feeling. Lesson learned." He held up his right hand as if he was pledging something.

As for their next area to explore...Cain thought for a moment before speaking. "Mr. Orb. Got any other companions we should know about. Before we run into their spirits preferably." Lesson learned there too.

When Cain held up his hand, Taki smiled and put her much smaller hand against his.

*Lesson definitely learned! But hopefully there won't be a next time. I like being able to help you, even if it's only a little bit.* She shifted to give her best friend a big hug, as the Orc answered.

I – I don't think so. At least, none from my family. We had hunting dogs, but I know they were killed when the attack happened, and – they were in the courtyard. If they were ghosts or anything of the sort, we'd probably already know it. We had no indoor animals or Bondeds, because my mother was a stickler for cleanliness, and hated the thought of animals indoors. He scoffed. As if there was any wonder why she only was able to bond to reptiles and things without fur! Ok, probably no love lost there.

The Orb was quiet, then spoke up again,

Ah! I don't know if the... I can kind of remember him – it – whatever lead the attack against my family, but I don't know more than it was humanoid.... Anyways, I don't know if he ever found it, because I wasn't anywhere nearby when I was trapped, but I remember there was an underground entrance to the manor house from the greenhouse. It led through some natural tunnels, into passage behind the fireplace in the ballroom. If he doesn't have it guarded, we might be able to sneak in from there. But there were traps in place, and I don't know if I can remember them all. What I remember seems to be random. I know I should know how to get by all of them, since it was for our escape, but I just can't!

His 'voice' would definitely be stronger, and faintly Cain would get a sense of his, for lack of a better word, being. Almost a mental picture, though made fuzzy and distorted by thick fog. He definitely would come across as a young adult, well educated, and for a moment Cain would feel the impression of some kind of weapon, the grip of a blade, in his right hand before it would fade.

There is risk, of course. If he has found the passage, you would be forced into possible conflicts in narrow confines. And he might not expect a frontal approach either, thinking we would try to be sneaky. When I remember more, I vow I will speak up.

Cain had to marvel for a moment at the size difference between their hands. Though it wasn't for long as she moved to give him a hug. Chuckling softly, he hugged her back even as the Orb started to list off some of the information he could remember. As he spoke, Cain could feel the Orb getting stronger and a mental image developed in his head. It was fuzzy. Almost like a photograph badly taken and stored. A wait he hadn't felt in ages, tilted his right hand forward just a little before it was gone. Like it was never there.

Taking the information he was given, Cain weighed it very carefully, even as he spoke. "Your vows mean very little unless ya act upon them. I am not complaining or berating. But understand, my trust is thin with ya and I would rather ya know that upfront than try to hide it. Something tells me that whoever attacked ya might be able to do the whole deepest desire yadda yadda I can see in your mind yadda yadda unicorn number two." He almost said something else on the last part but decided that Taki probably shouldn't hear him curse. No. She wasn't a child, but she acted like one often enough that Cain did it without really thinking on that part. Certain words were okay, but he didn't count bulls*it as one of them. Unless he slipped up that is.

"Even if he does expect us to not use the front door and find a way in through the back, he would probably be thinking of a window or a door. Unless, like ya said, he found the tunnel. Any sort of odds on rather or not he found it?" The thought of the traps set there didn't worry him too much. As long as he went first and activated any of those still active, it should be okay. You can't pierce bone and while flames might be hot, they probably aren't hot enough to start turning him into ash. An oven was needed for that.

Of course, this was even assuming any of the traps had been maintained by their host or even new ones added on. If he hadn't found it, Cain wouldn't be surprised if some of the trapwires had either bet set off by smaller animals or even just broke by themselves. If the hay and stable and rest of decay around the mansion was accurate, Cain was willing to bit that most things used for trapwire would have become fragile and brittle by now too.

Which was a good thing and a bad thing too as even the slightly vibration could set off a trap too far ahead for them to deal with. Just more risk he had to deal with.

Then again, that front door being slightly ajar...

"Do ya remember how to get to the entrance once inside the greenhouse?" Might as well try the entrance that would give them slightly better odds. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. "And Taki? Hope ya know how to dismantle a trap or two. Otherwise ya might be fishing me out of a lot of them."

Definitely wasn't trusting the orb to remember them all. Not by a long shot.

I don't know, but you might be right about him. Given that I can tell you little more, it would be wise to err on the side of caution. Assume he can, so that should he try it he will be less likely to affect you.

Taki's ears twitched against Cain's jawbone as she listened to the one-sided conversation. She still couldn't hear the Orb's Voice, so it was hard sometimes to follow along with their discussion. But this time she got it, fairly well enough.

*He knows another way in, doesn't he? But you don't know if it's a good idea?*

None of my family to my remembrance were anywhere near it, and I am fairly certain that none of his ilk, those he had with him that eve, came from that direction. It is possible he is unaware of it. But then again ever since I've been trapped he could have had centuries to explore everything. I do remember how to gain entrance, however. My father had all of his children repeat it every day for a year once we came of age, and twice a month we had to prove we could actually accomplish what we said.

*I can try!* the Myrgwae helpfully chirped, ready as ever to aid Cain in whatever endevor he needed her to. *I think I might have some things to help too! I know I have some wire, because I found a torn strip of ribbon and it had a wire in it. Oh! And marbles! We can use those too!* Already her mind was rattling with what she knew for certain was in her satchel (no accounting for anything that might just happened to be in there, as tended with her) that could be useful to their cause.

In the greenhouse there is a back section with a well, the Voice elaborated. The well itself isn't the entrance, though the access to the entrance is there. About an arm's length below the lip is a stone that feels like course grit to the touch. Pressing that will make it swing aside, and a lever within when turned will open the hatch in the opposite corner. You turn it... left! Yes, I remember I always reminded myself that my twin brother was left-handed, rather than right-handed as I was! The Voice gasped suddenly, then went momentarily quiet.

I... had no recollection of having a brother, a twin, until this moment.

"Bingo." Cain confirmed Taki's assumption and remembered that she couldn't hear the voice of the orb speak. "He is basically saying that he should remember how to get past the traps because his father was a paranoid sunvuofa...Well." He coughed for a moment before continuing. "Anyway, his father made him and his siblings prove they could run the passage way..." Cain paused for a moment as he listened to the orb. "Twice a month."

Cain was glad he couldn't do an eyeroll right about now. He would have done so and probably gain a questioning look from Taki. There was paranoid and then there was this guy apparently.

A chuckle escaped as Taki listed the items in her bag that could be helpful. "The marbles would certainly help. Will set off the traps before us and therefore, we can just walk right on by. So long as they aren't the type to linger or move."

It sounded easy enough to gain entrance. Just a feel, a press, a turn, and bam. They were in. At that admission though, Cain frowned as much as he could with his jaw. "Hey now...That is a good thing. At least ya are remembering things. Sad thing is, the bad comes with the good. Don't worry though. Between me and Taki, we will have ya right as rain and make sure desserts are served."

Of course Cain meant 'just desserts.' He wasn't actually gonna hand their host a cake. Unless sugar turned out to be a weakness and then by all means. Bring on the sweets.

Taki's eyes sparkled in amusement at Cain's aborted swear – yes, she'd probably heard the phrase before but if truth be told she liked it that Cain considered her like that. Being so small and quiet all the time tended to make it easy for others around her (especially taller people) to overlook her. Sometimes useful, sometimes rather frustrating. But Cain never did that or made her feel invisible. Just another thing she loved about her bestie!

*So we're going to sneak in and surprise whoever is in there and caused all this trouble! He won't know we're coming until we're right on top of him!* Oh, she was definitely enthusiastic about the idea, of a cunning and daring sneak assault at the enemy's flank. Such an adventurous escapade was right up a Myrgwae's alley!

She continued to rummage for a moment longer then paused, ears twitching and looking at where Cain kept the Orb, tipping her head and looking saddened even as the skeleton offered his words of comfort.

*He – He's sad. Did he remember something sad?* Her ears twitched again. *I... I can kinda feel it, though it's faint. Like a happy-sad.* She nodded firmly in agreement with Cain. *I know I can't hear you Mr. Orb, and to be honest I don't know if you can hear me, but Cain can do anything especially if someone's messing around with ghosts and stuff. You'll be okay and we'll make whoever put you in there let you out and go away forever!*

She gave her friend a fuzzy hug, then climbed up from his lap.

*Okay, I think I'm good to go – I feel like nothing happened at all!*

((Just giving you a moment to reply with anything if you want to, then either you or I can get to the greenhouse - I myself wasn't planning any more outside encounters though you can feel free to kick something off if you want!))

"That is the general idea." Element of surprise was one that had won many a battle when played right and Cain hoped they would play it right. The results if they screwed up...Best not to go there at the moment. What will be will be and thinking and stressing about it now certainly would not help in the long run.

At that cheering speech, Cain chuckled softly. "Aye. He did remember something sad and he can hear ya just fine I believe. So I think your words gave him hope." Or at least Cain didn't hear anything to the contrary so that is what he will be rolling with.

Standing up as well and dusting the straw from his backside, he tugged at Taki's hat. "Good to hear! Let's go say hi to our host shall we?" Grinning a skeletal grin, he scooped up Brains and Souna, stuck a gun in his hand and preceded out of the stable and towards where he believed the greenhouse would be. While he didn't expect any more trouble, he kept his pace slow and his senses alert. Better safe than sorry at this point.

((Nope. No more outside encounters here either. Though Cain is paranoid about them now XD ))

Hmm...Your friend is...unique. Far more lively than any creature that ever graced these halls in my time. Yes, her words are encouraging.

Unhearing of these sentiments Taki giggled at the familiar hat tug and followed behind her skeletal friend, Journeyman diving back under her hat.

Though the journey to the back of the manor would be quiet, there would be constantly the sensation of eyes watching, of a danger hanging heavily in the air and directed right on them. Passing by a shed a roof tile would suddenly fall free, cracking on the ground with an echoing sound. A bird would call from the previously-uninhabited forest. Wind would blow a shutter to bang against its window, though a glance around wouldn't reveal which one was banging and it would cease with sudden abruptness, as if someone had grabbed it.

But nothing would threaten directly as they came to what was once probably a lovely garden, only what was once push was dead, and what bit wasn't dead was overgrown and running rampant. Spiderwebs were clearly visible draping over the skeletal branches of bushes, a tree with a few withered leaves freaked softly, and vines covered what had been flagstones so that only a fragment was visible here and there. And in the middle of this was a large greenhouse, the glass walls opaque from dirt and neglect with a few cracks, and one panel missing an arc of material. The door of the rectangular structure faced them, at least, and was slightly ajar.

Getting to the greenhouse was a bit of a trial, however. The vines pulled at their feet, trying to trip them up, and a couple of the plants Cain would recognize as poisonous, conveniently right where the vines were the thickest and the risk of falling into them the greatest. The Orb would give an offended sputter, and Cain would hear some quiet grumbling about how he couldn't believe they'd done this to his garden and how dare they let his prize fruit tree die, did they know how rare they were, etc.

Reaching the door of the greenhouse itself a few stubborn and unoccupied cobwebs would be the only thing locking it, easily torn with a rather chilling ripping noise that would make Taki shiver. The inside would be just as dismal as the outside, rows of potted plants, all dead, and the scent of dust and decay heavy in the air. And right where it has been indicated was a low well, perhaps only a couple of feel high in total with a rotted wooden cover over it.
