Cassandra
Dropping to a knee, the Djinn took a deep breath and glanced around over the horizon. She couldn't quite see to the other levers as her pedestal was not high enough and she didn't have that amazing of eyesight. However, she could see the beams of light and before she could really respond to the two compatriots near her, she saw the red launch into the sky.

That did not look good at all.

Sighing, she mustered herself to her feet again at the sight of the incoming beetles, though she shot a glance down towards Selena and Foxie. "I'm alright. That obelisk is weakening my spells, but I should last a bit longer... thank you, Selena." She glanced over briefly and noted with a smile that Rose had thankfully kept Foxie out of harm's way. Good. "Foxie!" She called a bit farther to catch his attention specifically. When she had it, she hesitated only briefly. "I don't know what it is, but I think there's some kind of order of the lights in the sky. More levers.. do you see anything around the lever to indicate an order?"

The Marid was not used to these types of matters, honestly, but she knew she had to try.

As the beetles approached, she flung the whip around and lashed one from the air. Unfortunately, she misjudged the size it was and the speed it was diving at her and when the wing severed clean, the body plummeted to knock a chunk out of her platform, sending a spray of ice to the ground below. The others hovered menacingly in a slowly rotating circle around the sorcerer's position while she saw another group dive by Selena on the ground in retaliation to her own assault.

That's when she saw it. The orange.

A smile slowly formed on the Djinn's lips as she scooped up a fragment of the orange dotted carapace from her pedestal and she held it up. "Orange.. they didn't have this before! We got it wrong.. Foxie, I think someone else is in the ruins.. I think they pulled before you and this is a clue!"

Even as the words left her mouth, the beetles seemed to become enraged. Perhaps she had guessed right and they were displeased with the first answer being available? Or she was wrong and the bugs just didn't like her and it was all coincidence. Either way, they moved in for their cycling attack, weaving in and out of each other in a much more complicated and tactical pattern than before. Another blast of magic weakened the caster even more than the last and she found herself having to resort, for her own safety, to using the whip. This made matters interesting and a bit more difficult, but she was skill with her martial capabilities.

Just not quite as much.

As three more fell to the ground around the platform, the chill still in the air, but much lessened than prior, the Djinn was breathing a little heavily and aiming to leap onto the back of the remaining beetle. Piece of cake.

One jump, one sliced arm, and two lashes of the whip later, she slipped off the plummeting creature to fall more-or-less gracefully to the ground. Moments later, her ice tower melted to a puddle beside her. It lasted as long as it needed to, she figured.

She only hoped that she had been right about the lever, this time.

Foxie's ears perked up at Cassandra's words, and he yipped in agreement with her. After Rose (reluctantly) let him down, he dashed over and began to look for the other levers, memorizing where each one was placed. He turned his head when he heard Cassandra call his name again, and tilted his head. When she mentioned that there could be someone else in the ruins along with their little group, he couldn't help but chuckle to himself. He wouldn't be surprised if several others had made their way here as well.

He then glanced up at the lights in the sky, studying them intently as he tried to figure out the specific pattern that the levers had to be pulled in.

The Guardian flinched as the red light lit up the sky, and his heart stopped for a moment as he realized that something had gone very, very wrong.

Then the lever next to him reset so fast it almost clipped his arm in its wake.

Quickly, even as he was evading the wave of beetles, his mind raced along the sequence of events. The purple beam had moved, then the orange, then the green, and it clearly was in error. That meant a sequence, and if they and whomever had pulled the other levers were going to get it right, they had to have a means to communicate.

The dragons... no. That thought was destroyed the moment he saw the larger beetles - the dragons would have more than enough to deal with. A swarm of five made a pass, and the Lorekeeper lost a few feathers for his efforts and a few droplets of blood. I dare not call in Aurae, nor suggest Belial call in Ninendava. These winged menaces would tear either of them apart! But what to do? His heart was thundering with both adrenaline and fear...

When suddenly a bolt of inspiration hit him. Could it work? It’s presence had made him so uneasy before, but it had tried to be somewhat helpful, right?

Where did the greater risk lie - in trying or not?

Thinking of his brother's unknown fate cinched that question nicely.

Staff snapping around in a furious spin to try and gain some breathing space, he pressed his back against the monument behind him and shouted at the top of his lungs:

"Spirit! Whoever you were that spoke to us before! We need help!"

It was dangerous, to be certain. The mysterious being that had spoken to them atop the stairs had felt somewhat dark, but not necessarily evil. Hoping to get his point across in an effort to make it appear, he called out again.

“My brother – I fear he and others are in danger. These levers are involved, but we cannot speak to the others to coordinate which to pull. Ah!” A mis-timed evasion opened a gash in his sleeve and his bicep. “But spirits are not bound to time and space – you could speak for us.” Orange, these beetles were orange… a clue? The orange light had been the first one to light. That would mean green, then purple – order of appearance, also the order of the rainbow spectrum. “Orange, then myself, then purple! Please, go to whoever is there and tell them: Orange pulls first, then when I moves green is pulled, then purple!”

As he resumed trying to defend himself, he could only hope that he was correct, and that the spirit would help them. Because Solaris help them all if it wouldn’t.

Mini Update

Calling to the restless spirits that lingered here within the ruins turned out to be a wise idea indeed, as three such ephemeral creatures made their presence known; one at each of the three levers. Their will manifested, they awaited the commands from the winged-one who had the courage to speak to them, and would thus convey the orders across the great ruins in the order so dictated.

Of course, these spirits could spread messages in any direction as well, so any with the will to speak to the dead could assert their ideas and will upon them, and their messages would be distributed appropriately.

The appearance of the spirit got a gasp of shock, then quickly the Lorekeeper spoke, knowing that he might only have a few moments to do so.

"Relay to whomever is at the orange switch to pull it, please!" He glanced towards the sky, seeing Girith and Kivalth appear out of Between. Instantly clusters of the swarm of bettles launched at the dragons, but neither of them were having any of it. Girith's lightning breath cracked the air, ozone and the electrocuted remains of beetles raining down upon the ruins below, and that wasn't accounting for the havoc his tail and wings beating at the air were accomplishing. But past it all, he was keeping his eyes towards the orange beam of light, watching for whomever was there to sent it hurtling towards the centerpoint. Then it would be his turn.

The archangel felt the healer's magic wash over him, gifting him the ability to breathe in the water, and nodded his thanks. He would've attempted to speak, but was still gritting his teeth through the pain of his broken wing. How long could they hold out?

(Yeah, just a little update this time. It's fast-paced right now!)

Selena
The shapeshifter jumped at suprise as suddenly a ghost appeared in front of her and even got more suprised as she got told to pull the lever again.
Well obviously the first order of pulls was wrong. She looked at the beetles and then at the lever before simply jumping forward, changing into a wolf and agily (is this even a word?) dodging any atacks on her. She nodded to Foxie as she ran past him and shifted again to pull the lever. For sure the beetles were now really onto her and she got a few scratches and a not so scratchy wound before getting the old lever down and a light emitting. She grabbed her sword and started fighting off the beetles again.

(didn't count words)

Naya
The Kitsune looked at the lever that had gone up again and then at the human.
"What to do now?"
She asked between two dagger strikes and a few atack dodgings.

The Guardian angel nodded in satisfaction as he saw the orange beam cut across the sky, moving into position. He could only hope that his theory was correct, as brought up his Radiance again and caused a bright flash of blinding light, his bond with Belial allowing the devil to shield his eyes in time, and scattering the beetles back again. He spun about and grabbed his green lever, throwing it with all his might down then back again to watch the beam move to touch the orange.

"Now, whoever is at the purple! Throw the lever!"

That was as far as the Lorekeeper got, as one of the blinded beetles honed in one his voice and dived towards him suddenly. The angel cried out in surprise, not having seen the attack coming and from the fact that the sightless thing had been unable to properly gauge the distance, so it overshot its mark and collided with his face! Recoiling back in surprise, arms coming up to swat at the creature, the angel's head cracked painfully hard against the stone monolith that had housed the lever. Stars exploded in his vision, his ears rang, and he slumped to sit against it, dazed.

The warrior of Solaris struggled mightily against the current, but at its increased velocity he soon realized it was hopeless. It was all he could do to keep his grip on Tide.

That was when he noticed through the swirls of crimson streaming from his arm Ashyana, reaching for something beyond the grate. He caught the last flickers of something vanishing far beyond them all, but it didn't take him more than a moment to realize that whenever someone managed to raise the portcullis, it would be bad for her. Very bad.

Moving made his broken wing shoot fire through him, but somehow, through sheer determination and a heavy dose of stubbornness, the archangel reached out, grabbed Ashyana's shoulder, and pulled her back to him against the pain from the torn flesh in his arm, her limb clear of the metal bars that were threatening to either crush or drown them all. Although he knew Larandaithiel had recast his spell, the angel drew in deep breaths, trying to fill his lungs with as much 'air' as he could in preparation for the ending of the spell, and whatever might come after.

Flail hummed in the air, flames crackling around it and alternating with lightning and even ice as the lieutenant uncovered a few more tricks her weapon had to offer. But despite the bracers she wore that made her weapon light as air in her hands, she was beginning to tire. There were just no end to these things! And after that red flash... well, clearly things had gone wrong.

"I'm not sure!" she managed to gasp out to Naya as they tried to battle back the horde... then cried out and spun, nearly sending the head of her flail clean through the ghostly apparition that appeared beside them. "Another enemy?" She wasn't so sure they could handle more trouble. But it seemed that things were not about to take a turn for the worst, as it opened its mouth and a voice that she actually recognized issued forth.

"Now, whoever is at the purple! Throw the lever!"

It sounded like Raferties! Quickly the goldrider's eyes tracked skyward, where she saw the orange and just now the green lights had slid into place. That just left their lever to be pulled!

The beetles seemed to be aware of this, and suddenly the pair were surrounded by a veritable cloud of beetles all biting and blocking their passage. The woman growled in anger, flail snapping through the air with a speed and strength fueled by desperation, the flames taking power from her anger and turning white-hot.

"I'm not sure what will happen, but get ready to pull that lever!" She whirled the weapon with all her might, then slammed the head into the ground off of some previously-unknown instinct. The white flames burst out in a cyclone, spinning past the allies and like a cyclone of burning destruction scorched the beetles to ashes, cutting a clear path for the shapeshifter to get to the lever. But the opening would likely only last a few moments while the pests regrouped!

((Not sure on the word count, but I'm fairly certain I've gotten the needed amount already. And neither character's names appeared in their own!))

Taking a ragged breath of technical air (water-breathing was not a new spell to the Selu'ani, but it was not one that she was overly fond of the sensation of), the Elf cringed at the pressure not being lifted from their imprisoned state yet. The matter that involved the most cringing, however, was the state of her arm. As the vague panic had started to overwhelm her meditative state, the worry for those trapped, her sword, and her main arm, she was thankfully relieved of at least on of those bits of stress.

Keldo's assistance with her pinned arm sent a wave of relief through her and she found that state of zen a much easier level to reach as she nodded her thanks to the angel. "Everyone, we just need to hold for a brief amount of time longer. I am sure that those above will act quickly and if they can, they will free us soon."

To be honest, the only thing that managed to help her calm demeanor was one simple notion:

There had to be others from the village up here by now if they were all present. That, and she had heard scattered throughout her time here that where one angel was seen, normally there was another angel nearby. Raf-something. That, and people around here seemed attracted to chaos and this was quite a chaotic situation.

As soon as she hear the soldier call to get ready she strengthened her efforts in getting rid of the beetles, while keeping an eye out on the lever. As suddenly a wave of power rolled over her, not atacking her but strenghten her she quickly turned into her pure form, as she was faster like that, and sprinted to the lever, again changing and grabbing it before the new beetles started to atack her. Sending out some foxfire she got them confused for the minute, which the kitsune used to pull the lever.

Today was a day like any other.

Zeeno was simply meandering through the hills when there was a shudder. Little did he know that there was an enormous egg that showed up on the mountainside, dwarfing any of the eggs he had ever even vaguely thought of or seen before. Then again, at this point, he had yet to learn the difference between a 'smart egg' or a 'dumb egg', so he would most likely have tried to ascend the mountain to attempt to cook the previously mentioned egg. We can all theorize that this would not have gone over too well....

So it is a wonderful thing that Zeeno had no idea that the egg existed. That would come later, but that story isn't for right now. Instead, he quickly tried to dodge the falling debris and rocks by diving into a bit of shelter of overhangs nearby to the base of the mountain. After he managed to get enough courage, he edged his way out and began to explore again, picking up a manner of interesting baubles that apparently had fallen from the shudder of the egg's appearance: a dagger that was oddly shaped, a pair of mismatched earrings, some beads, coins, and other odds and ends.

"Well this weird. Who lose this?" As Zeeno reached the edge of a river, he frowned and picked up a washed up strip of cloth. It was odd and soaked with the water, but something about it told him to keep it, so he grinned his trademarked, toothy smile and tied the strip around his neck. "Zeeno hot and I finds wet cloth! Zeeno soooo lucky."

And so he continued on his way, following the river in hopes that there would be more treasure to be found.

Eventually, his travels led him to a cavern that the aforementioned river was flowing into. With a shrug, the creature decided that this was the perfect place to find secret treasures... everyone knew that pirates hid their booty in cave systems, right?

That, however, was not what he found. No, instead, Zeeno found a man, beat up from a trip down the river with a bit of blood starting to pool from a moderately severe gash down his arm. The man had a simple apparel to his stature, leathers being something that Zeeno greatly approved of, and a bow that was barely managing to hang onto his washed up figure. Nonetheless, this sight made Zeeno rather sad. "Poor dead man-thing. Wonder if has shinies...? NO one wants shinies wasted to fishies."

With such a simple thought in mind, the scavenger approached the body of Scarheart and started to loot him. Much to his surprise, he found that the man-thing was not, in fact, deceased. As Zeeno saw the shallow breathing from Scarheart, his chest barely moving, and eye lids flickering from REM sleep, though Zeeno had no idea what that was, the little darling quickly rummaged through his pack and started tossing things out onto the rock to one side.

"No... no... this? No, silly, that not work." After a small amount of time, Zeeno managed to find what he was looking for. The Grey Duck.

"Here go, tall man-thing. Zeeno and Grey Duck help make blood stay in!" His nimble little fingers pulled bits of cloth from his satchel, cleaned out the scratches and scrapes, and wrapped each of the injuries. Then, after the wounds were thoroughly gone from sight due to the cloth, he pulled up the Grey Duck... that's a roll of duct tape, for all those that are from Earth. "Stay in red, no leave!" A smile upon his face, Zeeno wrapped each makeshift bandage with a layer of duct tape to secure it in place.

Then, his eyes flickered to the man's head. A rather hefty sized bruise was formed and partially hidden by Scarheart's hair, making Zeeno giggle. "You sneaky egg! No. You go away, now." And with that, he thought about it, noting that he was out of fabric, and pulled the strip of cloth from around his neck. By this point, it was sufficiently dry from the walk by the river, and Zeeno had no trouble wrapping the bit around Scarheart's head to cover up the final injury.

"There! It fit perfect. Almost like it meant for your big man head." He didn't think too much into it, and he honestly couldn't have known that that was Scarheart's blindfold... it's the thought that counts, right?

"Okay, I go now. You has food, there be water, and here blankie. You all set. I be back in while make sure nothing chomp you." With a pat to the bits of berries and other assorted forest foods (including some raw meat wrapped in leaves) and a blanket draped over the fallen immortal, Zeeno made his way deeper into the cavern.

Humming softly to himself, the echoing of the music was jovial and yet a little ominous to any that probably heard. Down nearby to a bend in the river, and vicariously the cavern with it, there was a small tunnel that seemed perfectly sized for the little beastie. Curiosity overcame him and without a second thought as to what could have been waiting at the end of the tunnel, Zeeno traversed down the minuscule passage. It was cramped, even for him, but he didn't care and even found a bit of interesting lichen that he stashed in his slightly roomier bag. Reaching the end point of the tunnel, his eyes fell upon It.

It was capitalized to represent the size that Zeeno's eyes enlarged to at seeing the treasure. The thing that made this entire trip worth it.

Ahead of him was a lever. It was decent in size, small enough to be pulled by such a small being, but big enough to be a little daunting...

But, no, that was definitely not what had his eyes so affixed. What would Zeeno want with a miscellaneous lever? What use would pulling a random lever be? Seriously, who did that? Pull levers that just happened in your way? Especially when there was an ominous bit of light that was illuminating just that one lever in the circular chamber? It just screamed "touch me" and Zeeno wasn't that silly.

No. He saw dangling from it a leather thong with a river stone hanging perfectly in the center. Not just any river stone. One that had a perfectly circular hole through the center of its perfectly circular form. It was perfect. And it had to be Zeeno's.

"Mine!" Edging forward, he knew that he had to be careful. He knew that traps followed such treasures. Who knew what would happen if he took this. There could be magic, there could be a beast protecting it! There could be...

And then it was in his hand. The leather still wrapped around the lever, he tried to lift it off, but it wouldn't budge. The leather strap was stuck fast to the handle of the mysterious lever and he tugged again lightly. Again. "Let go, stupid lever. It mine! You no can wear.. it not good color for you!" It was blue after all and the lever was a rusted metallic. Not a good color combination.

With a couple hard jerks and tugs, finally it came free...

But not without pulling the lever down into its secondary position. The leather detached from the river stone and the stone rest in his palm as he shrieked and darted back towards the hallway, bolting down the narrow passage, and finally out into the open cavern again. Dropping down, he protected the prize with his body and closed his eyes to wait.

And wait.

And wait.

"Nothing?" Zeeno opened his eyes, blinking a couple of times, then laughing. "I funny... silly Zeeno think-think too much." With that, he shook his head and stroked the rock before grinning and putting it into his bag's special pocket, closing it, and heading back towards the fallen man to wait and make sure he wasn't being nibbled upon.

Elsewhere, somewhere, something probably happened from that lever being pulled. However:

Zeeno had his rock.

The Next Challenge!

This week's challenge is actually kinda fun, as opposed to challenging.

I want you to put all of your character's dialogue in a readable color fade. You can find a good source with which to do that, HERE (Feel free to PM me if you need helping working that particular site, and feel free to use your own as well. Just make sure to change the 'type' to BBCode, or Invision)

So, for the rules, anything that your character actually -says- should be in this color fade. Feel free to use the same one each time, or alternate it. The points will be awarded as follows:

Different Fade, Each Dialogue, at Least 500 Words total - 3 points
Different Fade, Each Dialogue, any word count - 2 points
Same Fade, Most Dialogues, any word count - 1 point

As with all the challenges, this is -per character-, not per player.

Orange, Green, Violet

As the three levers were finally pulled in the proper order, once again, the lights bent toward the middle of the ruins, triangulating all those colors in one point in the dusty sky. Abruptly, there was a jarring explosion as mobile, tendrils of prismatic beams soared through the air to impact the remaining beetles, sending them crashing into the stone below - miniature craters left in the ruins from each.

A grinding would be heard from the location of the three obelisks as each one began to close its wings and shift back into a neutral state. The riddle solved, the ghostly apparitions departed from the land of the living leaving a solemn quietude all over.

A second explosion then echoed throughout the scene as the waves of light blasted through the grey clouds and dust above, dissolving entirely, the obscuring storm above vanishing entirely.

Meanwhile, below the city proper, trapped against the iron grate, several more heroes gasped for their last moments of air. The spell was weakening, and they all felt it somewhere deep inside. Then, the shudder from within the cavernous walls could be felt, reverberating through the ancient portcullis. Briefly, the rush of water faded into a gentle tide that left them all sort of weightless next to the iron gate. Then, without warning, it jerked into the flooring and the water ignited into a frenzy again, shoving everyone deeper into the tunnel beyond, blast past the lever with reckless abandon.

The canal took a dip into the earth, then banked left, and right, then left again, tossing the entirety of the collection into one another as well as the banks and walls of the rushing rapids. Then, even under the water, they could all hear a sound ahead. Perhaps it was recognizable as a massive waterfall that led into the depths of oblivion, or perhaps to some it simply sounded like a swarm of giant ants about to engulf them. Luckily, the former would be the correct assumption.

Like a bullet from a rifle, the nearly-drown crew of adventurers launched from the tunnel, flying far out of the water itself and covering quite a bit of air, before they too began to plummet downward to an illuminated pool below. Cerulean-blue fungus shone with bio-luminescence from the walls and even beneath the water, shedding all the light any would need on this cavern.

The pool was sufficiently deep enough as to not have anyone crashing into the hard stone below, but the water was also spiraling toward a hole in the center of its bottom. The pull wasn't tremendous, but it'd surely swallow an untrained swimmer whole without help.

Should the heroes make it out of the pool to the rocky shore nearby, they will find a series of tunnels leading far deeper into the ruins. Should they get pulled deeper, who knows what inevitable fate awaits them? Perhaps, then, it would be kind to mention that ahead, along the shore, past the tunnels, lies a great doorway - tall enough to allow dragons passage, one might say.

Thick, granite doors with iron locks and knobs, writing along both door facings and the walls leading to them. The mystery of the egg could possibly lie beyond those thousand-year-sealed doors. Or perhaps, only death awaited on the other side.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Above ground, the ruins quickly grow silent.

Belial eventually decodes quite a bit of the strange language. Its just enough to read the wall leading along the steps, should he examine it more closely.

Cassandra is definitely feeling the magical drain from the close proximity of the monolith. The overwhelming sensation to pass out looms.

As they all awaited their fate in the flooded tunnel, Ashyana was filled with a wave of elation as the water slowed its pace and the portcullis was raised. Then, that very sensation shifted to dread as the water instead rocketed them all down into the depths of the ruins. The Selu'ani was forced to press herself against the angel that had assisted her in freeing her arm to avoid being thrown around into the walls and the others.

Although this was quite useful while they were in the tunnel, as the waterfall drew nearer and nearer, she knew that it would not be a good idea for her to weigh him down with his obviously broken wing. Cringing a bit, she released her own grip on Keldos and pushed herself off, an act that wasn't entirely necessary with how hard the water was jostling her around anyway. As they separated, Ashyana found herself utterly losing track of all the others. Her vision was filled with nothing but water and darkness.

Then, there was light.. or at least enough light for her Elven eyes to pick up on and relate to her that she and the others (she presumed) had exited their prison... and instead were free falling towards a whirlpool.

Great.

Ashyana closed her eyes and tried to shift herself so that she wasn't as apt to hurt herself in the fall. Thankfully, this was not the first time she had fallen a distance into water, childhood entertainments teaching her just how to angle herself. Unfortunately, that only ensured that she did not break any bones in the process. Briefly her vision grew dark, her weaker constitution and hollow bones not helping much in the situation, and the churning water pushed her in circles. Long story short, she was disoriented briefly, but finally found herself realizing that she needed to get to the shore she could faintly see past the silhouettes of the others around her.

It took some effort, but not more than she had, to make it to the shore. Her body scream at her from the soreness of the events under the water and she guessed that what she had thought was a broken leg was just badly bruised, but she was no longer submerged fully in the water. That was something to be thankful for.

Her eyes flickered out towards the whirlpool and she tried to make out and count the forms of all those she had seen in the tunnel before.

"Come towards my voice if you can not see! I will help you to shore!"

Ashyana called out as loud as she could to be heard over the rushing waterfall and she hoped that no one had been knocked unconscious in the trip or fall. The only thing she could do was wait and pray Gaian had a hand in this world as much as her's.

A smile flickered across Cassandra's face as she saw the blasts of lights, one after another. It was great... granted, she didn't know exactly what it was that the lights did, but it definitely worked since there was no red light and instead all their enemies were now deceased.

"Yes! Great job Foxie and Selena... and whoever else pulled the levers..." Cassandra laughed and rubbed her hands over the scratches she'd received from the fight. It wasn't often that she felt pain, so when she did, if it consisted of minor injuries, she occasionally liked the sensation.

However, the sensation that overcame her as soon as the previous words left her mouth was not a pleasant one. In fact, it was horrible.

The world spun and a wave of weakness filled the Djinn. She couldn't entirely tell where the feeling was originating from, but she could guess it was that damned monolith. "I... um... I think I need to.. to sit..."

Although her words to her ears seemed rather normal, anyone that heard her would be capable of telling that something was off with Cassandra. Not taking any chances, Cassandra sat on a nearby rock and closed her eyes as she took in a couple of deep breaths to try to prevent embarrassment like passing out. "Are you two alright? Did any... any of the beetles get you?"

The Djinn figured this sensation would pass before she would. Those levers had to have a purpose and there was that rumble that happened just before the levers showed up in the first place. Perhaps they should investigate that...

Standing, she wobbled a bit, but pushed through it and ignored the glare that she could feel from Elsharaz nearby. Before he even tried to speak to her, she cut him off with a look. He knew that she could be more stubborn than he. Taking a deep breath once more, she waited for the other two to be ready to go and nodded towards where they had all heard the fountain's crash.
