Featuring: Gargoyle: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle course Classes were starting soon. He knew that. But he was one of those who really didn't have anything else going for him. He couldn't fly home... Well, maybe he could by himself, but that would take him a while. Airports required more time than he could rely on his inducer to provide. And security checkpoints... No thank you. So, as most summers, he'd spent it at the institute. Maybe if he got a car, customized to accommodate him, he'd drive home next summer. And he'd never say as much to his grandfather, or he'd spend money they didn't need to spend getting a car for him. Since Jacob had taught his grandparents how to use Skype, life had gotten a lot more comfortable. At least they could see him, and know he was okay. Their call wasn't for a few more hours. He had time to kill, and so he decided to spend it the best way he knew how... The obstacle course. Cody had always loved this part of the campus, almost as much as the woods... And that was more because the woods were kind of like an infinite obstacle course for him. He always started with the structured version. He crouched at what he had determined the starting line, as machines hummed and whirred into position, erecting challenges that were slightly different each time, just so no one could learn the course... He would have to adapt. And if there's anything Cody did well, it was adapt. A familiar fire burned through his joints and muscles. His powers were activating. He was making himself more agile, more flexible. He grit his teeth as the change finished. The pain never lasted longer than the change. He'd tried engaging his adrenals to try and deaden the pain, but that always left him feeling jittery and a little winded afterward. Not the best way to go into an obstacle course. He felt his body sink lower to the ground, now fully quadrupedal. His grit teeth turned into a grin. His claws dug into the earth, and at a signal heard only in his head, He launched himself into the course. Cody sped along the ground at a speed that msot would need a motor to reach. He pushed off the ground, launching himself at a vault-platform, used only as a stepping stone to propel him onto a zip-line. His claws were hard enough to handle the slide un-aided. He slid down the cable, as much from momentum as from the angle of the cable. The line terminated at a horizontal bar. Cody couldn't resist the urge. At just the right moment, he flipped his legs up, to hook his toe-claws around the bar, as he let go of the line. He swung out and up, snapping open his wings to carry him to his next goal. He glided to the cargo net, suspended several feet off the ground. Most would have to climb it from the underside. Cody was not like Most. He closed his wings, dropping himself onto the net. His left foot went through the net, but the rest of his extremities landed securely on a line. A moment to right himself, and he crawled along the net to the end. There, he transfered onto a ladder, intended to offer a more sturdy handgrip as one hand-walked to the ground. That was too easy, and too slow for Cody. His wings and tail spread to enhance his balance, as he crawled down one side of the ladder, bypassing the rungs altogether.Once he was near the end, he corkscrewed off the side, and landed on all fours. He swept his eyes across the field, easily as big as the mansion itself, and lined up his next path... Summary: Cody passes the time with half workout, half play. Tag: Open |

Featuring: Firestar: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Around noon Location: Out at the obstacle course. Liz Allan was freaking out. She'd only arrived at this... 'school' that morning, having procrastinated her arrival for weeks. Technically she could have come here at any time over the summer after the.... mutants had invited her. She could have come and gotten settled in, become accustomed to the... people. Instead, she had waited until the very last weekend. Even after receiving her informational packet and the brief tour that had showed her where her room would be, Liz hadn't actually moved in. She had stayed with her mother and tried for the entire summer to figure out another way she could live. More accurately, she had spent the summer trying to find a way of making two disparate, incompatible things agree with one another. 1: She was afraid of mutants, afraid of the kind of freaks she saw on the news. 2: She enjoyed her power. It made absolutely no sense. They were polar opposite opinions. Liz had always hated the idea of mutants running around out there. And yet, now that she was one... she didn't hate what she could do. She kind of really, really liked it. And she was certain that being around nothing but mutants was going to confuse her even more. After arriving at the school, she had locked herself in her room and literally hidden under her covers. She felt surrounded by all the things—people that she had previously ridiculed, and was certain they both knew of her (former?) opinions and were plotting something to get even. For two hours, Liz had lain there under the blankets of the bed, hiding from her problems. She drifted off for a short while into a nap, then snapped awake when someone passing by outside had called out a greeting to someone else. Claustrophobic feelings outweighing her fear of what she might find, Liz eased herself out of her room, looked both ways, and then hurriedly ran outside. She walked around for awhile, enjoying the fresh air. To her detriment, the blonde girl was walking into the area of the obstacle course without noticing where she was going. So lost was she in her thoughts and inner debates that she didn't notice anything until a movement in the corner of her vision caught her attention. Turning that way, she was just in time to see something big, blue, and fast coming toward her, and reflexively let out a scream, paralyzed with fear. Summary: Liz wanders onto the obstacle course in the middle of Cody's path Tag: Gargoyle: OOC: Up to you whether he actually collides with her or not, Michael. |

Featuring: Thunderbird: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle course Jimmy had arrived the day before. He was nervous about more than a few things, but so far things had gone well. His roommate was a nice boy. Quiet and not overly smelly. They hadn't gotten to interact much just yet, but they had all year for that. As soon as he'd given up on trying to sleep (the dorm was far more noisy than home had ever been), he'd headed down to eat breakfast and start exploring his new home. Since his mutation had manifested, he'd opted to spend as much time outdoors as he could. There was less ducking involved. And he could stand up straight all of the time. He had found a nice high perch on one of the walls of the obstacle course to get a good look at the entire course. He'd have to try it out later. Right now, his roommate looked like he was using it. He was fascinated by the way Cody's form seemed to shift as he increased speed. A flicker of something caught his attention. Glancing away from Gargoyle, Jimmy noticed the girl who had wandered into the middle of the path. Why wasn't she moving? If he had been any closer, the ear splitting scream she let out would have knocked him over. And she was still just standing there. As fast as Cody was moving, there was a chance even with enhanced reflexes he didn't have enough time or room to compensate. Without hesitating, the newly dubbed Thunderbird launched off the wall, clearing the distance in one superhuman leap. He landed with much less noise than one would expect of his size. Taking in the limited space and time in a heartbeat, he took off in a dead sprint. Jimmy's top speed was highway worthy when he got going, but for the short distance, he didn't need to go even half as fast as he could. Snatching the panicked girl, he had to rebound off the wall to keep from really hitting it. Turning so he was going a different direction of Cody, he finally managed to skid to a stop. He put the girl down. Who was still screaming. Loudly and painfully. Clamping his hands over his ears, Jimmy's whole body cringed from the tooth grinding pitch and volume. "Stop screaming," he demanded in a quiet whine. "Please." Summary: Jimmy executes a rescue and immediately regrets it because of the screaming. Tag: Gargoyle:, Firestar: |

Featuring: Gargoyle: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle Course A good thing about an obstacle path; it encourages one to be aware of ones' surroundings. Apparently, not every "one." Some "one" had just meandered out from behind one of the larger, solid obstacles. She turned to look at Cody. Her first, and only reactions: Stop and scream. Because that had a tendency to stop incoming projectiles. She was VERY fortunate that Cody had enhanced himself for flexibility and agility. His body could and would react much faster than it would otherwise, and he had extensive gymnastics training on his side. However, he had roughly half a second to decide on a course of action to keep himself from bowling her over. Then, in the blink of an eye, (seriously, he was glad he hadn't blinked) his new roommate came out of nowhere and scooped up the screaming girl and had her out of his path... Too bad he had already started his own wall-spring. and wasn't quite agile enough to deflect himself from his course of action. He had only one direction to go from here: Up. He turned his body to grab one of the bars of a parallel bar set with his toe-claws. He let his momentum carry him up and around, as he twisted and grabbed the bar with his hands. His wings snapped out, and tail straightened, lowering his center of gravity down to his hands and feet... A moment to verify his balance, and then he released his change. The fire burned through his joints and muscles as they returned to normal. He let out a tight breath, and crawled along the bar until he could drop to a safe distance. Now in his default form, it was easier to move on two legs, but still slightly hunched. He made his way over to the two, "Everyone alright?" Summary: Cody has to change course... But Jimmy was already on top of things. He comes to make sure no one's hurt. Tag: Thunderbird, Firestar, Anybody else? |

Featuring: Armor: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noon Location: Institute Grounds – Obstacle Course Hisako Ichiki was finally, finally back. The summer away from the Institute, as much as she deeply loved her parents, had seemed to drag on and on. The month and a half with her mother hadn't been so bad. It was nice to see Arizona again, and visit a little with the friends she had grown up with. On the other hand, the month and a half with her father in Yokohama had dragged. Particularly because Makoto had his own ideas about what his daughter should be doing, and none of it involved spending any time whatsoever around the X-Men. Then again, he also disapproved of most of the ways that Hisako spent her time. He thought her love of video games and movies was childish, to say nothing of what he thought of her wish to join the X-Men. Hooboy. She had made the mistake of voicing that desire toward the beginning of the summer, and her father had let loose with a tirade that made Hisako wonder briefly if she'd mixed up her Japanese and mistakenly said she wanted to join a Neo-Nazi White Power Youth Group or something. The rest of the summer had been tense, to say the least. Makoto had idly threatened not to let her go back to 'that place' now and then. But when the time came, her mother, Tama, made certain that Hisako was on the plane to come back to the United States, where she spent another week in Phoenix with her before taking another plane up to New York. Between the flights from New York to Phoenix, then from Phoenix to Yokohama, then from Yokohama to Phoenix, then from Phoenix to New York, all in the course of three months, Hisako was really sick of riding in airplanes. She had no idea how business people did it. Once the cab had dropped her off at the school, Hisako had taken a minute to drag her bags to her dorm room before quickly heading outside. She had missed this place, and was eager to see who else was around. Barely had she started to walk on the grounds, than a high pitched, panicked scream of terror cut across the field. Without thinking, she immediately ran that way. The scream had come from the direction of the obstacle course, and Hisako cringed inwardly as she pondered what sort of accident could have prompted that terrible of a shriek. Skidding to a stop as she found a really... really... really huge Indian guy standing with his hands over his ears, and a blonde girl that was equally unknown to her looking utterly panicked. Yet, not hurt. Nearby was someone she did, at least, recognize. “Uh, hey Cody.” Hisako greeted him. “What... ummm, what happened? It sounded like someone was getting their leg torn off, or seeing some kind of evil, demonic creature from he--” She realized belatedly with a glance at Cody and stopped. “Oh.” “I mean, yeah, totally the leg torn off thing. Anyone missing any legs?” A moment later, she added slightly quieter, “It's really bad when that's better than the alternative....” Quickly, Hisako amended, blushing as she did so, “Err, my brain was supposed to say that one inside itself, but my mouth took the ball and ran. Hi.” She extended her hand to both of the ones she didn't recognize. “I'm Hisako Ichiki. Are... you guys okay?” Summary: Hisako reacts to the scream and distracts from the awkward by adding more awkward. It's kind of her thing. Tag: Gargoyle: Firestar: Thunderbird: |

Featuring: Firestar: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Around noon Location: Out at the obstacle course. In her defense, the only time of year that Liz Allan typically had to avoid being potentially trampled to death was Black Friday, and it wasn't even November yet. Still, standing there flat footed, screaming as something big and blue came straight at her did not speak wonders of her survival instinct. It was just remarkably lucky that she didn't end up flat on her back, possibly with several broken bones. Unfortunately for her rescuer, Liz's scream redoubled as she was unexpectedly and unceremoniously hauled off the ground. What followed was a confusing and stomach-upsetting series of movements, until Liz finally found herself put back onto the ground. She immediately fell onto her rear before hearing her rescuer plead, in a pained voice, for her to stop screaming. It was almost like it actually hurt him. Choking off her own cry, Liz slowly looked up from where she had fallen. She looked up.... and up.... and... “Holy fuck.” She breathed when her gaze finally found the guy's head somewhere up around the level of most lamp posts. Slowly, Liz picked herself up off the ground and tried not to hyperventilate. “You—you're...” She stammered. Once she was fully upright, Liz still had to tilt her head back to look up at the guy. She was pretty much eye level with his stomach. Her hand came up to her own head, then moved across rather shakily until it reached him. “O-o-okay...” She managed in a weak voice. “It's not some trick of perspective. You're huge.” Belatedly, she interrupted herself. “Wait, what almost--” Turning toward the other voice that had spoken, Liz found herself staring at the thing that had almost hit her. She screamed, again, and jumped back toward the one that had rescued her. Her eyes were wide as the squeal escaped her, which she tried to cut off by covering her own mouth. Still, she couldn't stop breathing sharply and rapidly through her nose as her hand remained clamped over her mouth. Her scream had been muffled and broken into little more than a whine while her wide, all but panicked eyes remained locked on the... the... mutant. The other mutant, Liz. Get it together. By that time, another person had arrived, apparently drawn by the noise. Liz looked and found a pretty Asian girl, who proceeded to ramble about people getting their legs ripped off. Eyes widening even further that this had been the other girl's immediate assumption, the all-but-panicked blonde demanded, “Is that normal?!” Gulping several times to slow her nerves, she kept casting nervous glances toward the blue... creat—mutant, before finally managing to speak. “L-Liz... Liz... Allan...You—Umm-- I didn't...” Looking around, Liz finally noticed where she was. “... what is this place?” Summary: Poor Liz is just... overwhelmed. Tag: Gargoyle: Thunderbird: Armor: |

Featuring: Thunderbird: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Around noon Location: Obstacle Course Thank God and Usen, the blond girl finally stopped screaming. Jimmy lowered his hands from his ears, not that it had muffled things much. Another girl had shown up, as well likely drawn to the scene by the screaming. Jimmy flushed as the blond reached out to touch him, staring at him in a mixture of shock and horror. He hated this reaction. Yes, he was huge. The world never let him forget it. Just because he could smash holes in concrete walls or pick up cars didn't mean he liked to destroy things or hurt people. But that's what people seemed to think when they saw someone as big as him. "I'm not going to hurt you," he said automatically. At least she tried to muffle the next shriek as Cody approached. Jimmy winced at the squeak, then let out a sigh. His roommate was probably even more tired of that reaction than he was of the reaction to his size. The Asian girl wasn't helping, going on about people getting their limbs ripped off and demons. Luckily, she changed the subject and introduced herself. She was Hisako and the blond was Liz. That was better than screaming any day. Jimmy dropped into a relaxed crouch so he wasn't towering over everyone so much. Liz already seemed afraid enough of Cody. "James," he supplied quietly. "James Proudstar." Pushing his long hair back for a moment, he looked at Liz, then to his roommate. "Are you okay?" he asked Cody. Changing directions when going that fast sucked, even with superhuman reflexes and agility. Jimmy had learned that one pretty quickly. Summary: Jimmy introduces himself. Featuring: Gargoyle: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle Course Ah. That reaction. Cody was kind of used to it. Didn't mean he liked it. His expression fell slightly, as he gave a sardonic smirk. If there was any place that he should be exempt from that reaction, it was here. But still, there were new people. People who'd never really seen a physically altered mutant. Still with the mindset of "They're just like us, but with amazing/dangerous abilities" right up until they encounter someone who isn't "just like them." And that someone was usually someone like Cody. And then Hisako arrived... and things got even more awkward with a comparison to a demon from "oh." "Nice to see you, too, Hisako," he said flatly. "As long as introductions are going around, I'm Cody Brightfeather. And despite appearances, I am not a demon, nor do they factor into my ancestry. As to what this place is... in specific, this is the obstacle course. Word of warning, if the obstacles are visible, that means someone is using it." He looked toward Jimmy, and said, "I'm alright. There was a bar I could use to bleed off some speed, so I didn't come to quite as abrupt a halt as I could have." It was one of the benefits to the races he and Longshot used to have across similar obstacle courses. You had to be really good at improvisation to make it anything less than a one-sided race. Sometimes, it was like just turning off his mind and letting his body move, trusting it to find the handhold it needed. Didn't always work, but when it did, it was glorious. He turned his attention back to Liz. "And let me guess... Mutants like me were the big bad boogeymen that kept you up nights until you became one." He smiled a mostly mirthless smile. She wasn't the first one here with that kind of background. Probably wouldn't be the last. "Let me be the first to greet you with the official Xavier school greeting." He held up both hands in front of him, his claw-like fingers spread slightly. He then theatrically curled them up like a cat's paw, starting with his outermost talons, and rolling in a smooth motion toward the middle, as he said, in a playful, deep voice, "Gr-r-rowl..." with an exaggerated roll of the r's. Summary: Cody has a wee bit of fun at Liz's expense. Tag: Firestar:, Thunderbird:, Armor: |

Featuring: Armor: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noon Location: Institute Grounds – Obstacle Course Yeaaaaah, Hisako knew that her initial foray hadn't really helped matters. She had been floundering there for a minute. Which she was sorry for, but the important thing was to keep the subject changed to better things than someone's potential... probable racism. “No no no.” The young Japanese woman shook her head at Liz's sudden panic. “I just—it's like when your mom hears people shouting and she says, 'what's going on down here, it sounds like you're killing each other' even when it really doesn't sound that bad, she just wants you to stop yelling at each other.” “Over explaining, Hisako.” She said aloud to herself before biting her lip as Cody and the other boy, who was apparently James, introduced themselves. She winced then. She had an idea of how Cody felt, to be stared at with such fear, to be screamed at, just for looking the way he did. But she also didn't want to dwell on that, because making the new girl feel defensive was more likely to make her withdraw more and cling to her prejudices than actually grow away from them. So instead, Hisako tried a different tactic. “Oh please, Cody.” She said with a dismissive wave. “I can totally be scarier than you.” Holding her arms up near her chest like tiny tyrannosaurus arms, Hisako lifted her hands like claws and gave a few swipes while fastening her face into some absurd caricature of a monster. “Raaaaaaaaaarrrr. Greeeaaaar. Flarglerargh. Reglearbaruff.” Head tilting slightly to the side as she considered, Hisako then added, "Uh, if that was actually a spell to summon alien robot demons to kill all of us, that's totally my bad." Summary: Hisako attempts to disarm any potential bad feelings. Tag: Gargoyle: Firestar: Thunderbird: |

Featuring: Firestar: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Around noon Location: Out at the obstacle course. Once the Japanese girl—Hisako--assured her that people having their limbs ripped off wasn't a 'first guess scenario', Liz breathed out. Not that she felt any more comfortable. There was still the big guy, James, and the... the... Cody. His accurate guess about her reaction to him made her flinch, folding her arms protectively over her stomach. A denial came to her lips when the blue, heavily altered mutant went on, but died unspoken, even as she shrank back a little. Throughout Hisako's attempt to lighten the mood, Liz stared at the ground, biting her lip. A tiny smile crossed her face before leaving as she looked up finally. She looked at Cody, and nodded. “Yes.” she said to him, swallowing the thick, frightened knot in her throat. “I'm scared. I was scared of you—I mean people like you—I mean mutants my whole life. Always. And... and even if I didn't have any idea what mutants are, even if I hadn't seen them all over the news, I'd still have been afraid of you, right when I saw you, because you look scary.” “I'm not saying it's fair. I'm not saying it's right. I'm not saying I have anything to be afraid of from you. I'm not saying anything like that. I'm just saying that you look scary.” “But.... I'm sorry. I'm sorry that my first reaction is that you're going to hurt me. I never.... I never thought about how that might feel from the other side. I... I don't know how to stop feeling that way. I don't know how to stop being afraid when I see you.” “But I'm here. I'm here, now, and... and I can't promise that I won't be afraid when I look at you, at least right now, but I... I'll try.” She was stiff, clearly as frightened as someone offering a limb to a rabid shark, but Liz slowly lifted her hands and, to the best of her ability, mimicked the 'greeting' he'd given before. She knew it wasn't real, but it felt right to return the gesture. "Growl." She said softly before extending one hand toward him “Hi... C-Cody. I... I'm sorry I... I walked... in your way. I w-was... daydr-dreaming.” Summary: She really is trying. Tag: Gargoyle: Thunderbird: Armor: |

Featuring: Thunderbird: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle Course Jimmy fell silent as Cody derided Liz for her obvious prejudice. It wasn't like she was the only person who had ever reacted to any of them that way. It wasn't new or different. Her reaction hadn't been the worst. The problem it was common enough they were just tired of it. Especially from one of their own. Even if it was too much to expect for Liz to just give up all of her prejudices overnight, it seemed to him that it should have been a serious wake up call for Liz. Except Jimmy had more experience with prejudice than the pretty blond white girl. Of course, having been on the receiving end of blind bigotry most of his life, Jimmy couldn't help but feel bad for Liz. His parents had always coached him through it, reminding him of his proud ancestors and traditions. If she was a bigot before, she was probably raised that way. Mutants were her bogeyman and now she was the monster of her nightmares. That was something he couldn't imagine. "That's all we're asking," he said quietly, looking at Liz. "Is that you try." He smiled shyly. "And not stand in the middle of the obstacle course when somebody's using it. You both could have gotten hurt bad." He chuckled at Hisako's teasing attempt to be scary and Liz's apology and pathetic growl. Now he felt bad for being upset with her in the first place, even though they really had every right to be. Cody especially. But forgiveness was part of the healing process. Now that the crisis was over, he wasn't sure what to do or say. Social situations were always harder for the huge Apache. There was no time to overthink or feel self-conscious when he actually had something to do or there was some urgency. Now he was stuck trying to ignore most of the sensory input he was getting from the kids and the area around him. Summary: Jimmy decides he really can't be upset with Liz. Of course, he says very little, because it's Jimmy. Tag: Armor:, Gargoyle:, Firestar: |

Featuring: Gargoyle: Date: August 29th Time: Noonish Location: Obstacle course Cody wanted to disagree with her about him being scary... but he couldn't. He'd spent every day with this body since he was 12 years old. Some of it had been fun. Terrified looks from others when they saw him had been less fun. But he also couldn't change that. Of all the factors of his body he could alter, his appearance was not one of them. He'd tried. He'd tried to make his morphic cells retreat. Tried to blunt his ears. Tried to turn his claws into fingers... None of it had worked... at least not enough to count. There was a limit to how far he could push a change. He visibly calmed down. He had pushed back hard... "Sorry. I've had to deal with this..." he gestured in such a way as to indicate his entire body "for five years. Some things just build." He reached out, and carefully clasped her hand. He could feel a little heat from her hand, but not much else. She would likely feel only warm leather and bone from his hand. He shook her hand lightly, before carefully disengaging, being very careful not to let his claws cut her. "It's alright. Unless you specifically asked about it when you came here, there wasn't any real way you could have known. Maybe we can suggest some proximity alarms or something like that when they do maintenance next time. Better for all parties involved." He moved back away from her, and spread his wings wider. The sun had just emerged from behind one of the clouds, and he wanted to "top off his tanks", so to speak. Changing took energy. One change didn't take everything he had, but he could still feel the difference. The sun made his wings tingle. He would know when he was "full", but still, it felt good. "I'm used to having a lot of this place to myself over the summer... I don't go home like a lot of people. It's not that I don't have a home to go to, which is more than some here can say. But, well... I think a security checkpoint would be a special level of hell for someone like me. I just avoid the hassle, and stay here." He hooked his thumbs in the pockets of his jeans. "There aren't many here like me... physical changes, that is. So... aside from powers on display, there shouldn't be all that many more surprises in store for you." His tone was softer, and kinder. He was trying to be the nicer voice of experience. Summary: Cody calms down, and tries to smooth things over a little. Tag: Firestar, Armor, Thunderbird |

Featuring: Armor: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Noon Location: Institute Grounds – Obstacle Course Gratified that everyone seemed to be calming back down and that no one seemed too out of sorts, Hisako smiled at Cody's words to Liz. “Yeah, trust me, seeing Cody is a big surprise to everyone the first time.” Granted, Hisako's own reaction to him had been to shout, 'COOL!' and immediately start asking questions about how well he could fly, if his tail was prehensile, and so forth. But still, she understood the surprise. It was one thing to know there were very different looking mutants at the school, and another thing to know it. While Cody explained a bit about why he always stayed at the school rather than risk checkpoints and assured the other girl that there weren't that many heavily physically altered mutants for her to run into, Hisako turned her attention back to the big guy. “James, you said your name was?” She asked politely. “Is that what you prefer to be called? I mean, Hisako is kind of hard to make anything other than just Hisako work.” “I do tend to answer to 'hey you' and 'just shut up already' though.” She added with a bright smile. “If that helps at all. Ooh, and Brook. Yeah, I didn't get that one for awhile until someone said 'Babbling'.” Summary: Responding and casual talk. Sort of. Tag: Gargoyle: Firestar: Thunderbird: OOC: Sorry guys! Featuring: Firestar: Date: Friday, August 29th Time: Around noon Location: Out at the obstacle course. Liz remained stiff and uncertain, hand outstretched, until Cody clasped her hand. She could tell he was being careful, yet touching him still instinctively made her nervous. It was a reaction she tried to push down, telling herself that she was going to have to get accustomed to this. Yet it wasn't an easy instinct to ignore. Still, she had to point out to herself, she didn't feel any worse after the handshake. It was just... handshake (albeit a careful one). A very soft, almost imperceptible gasp escaped Liz when the boy spread his wings a bit after stepping away from her. Her eyes darted between said wings and the boy's face. Inwardly, her curiosity and love of fantasy was warring with her uncertainty and (to be frank) racism. She did, however, find herself frowning, though for a different reason, when the boy said that he didn't go home much. “That's not fair.” The words came unbidden. She hadn't really ever thought about how prejudice and fear would feel like on the other side. She'd always just sort of subconsciously seen mutants as enjoying the power they held over normal humans, without considering how it would affect their lives. “I mean-- uh, I mean if you have a family to go home and see... then... then you should... be able to, like anyone.” It sounded lame to her, and she shrugged and closed her mouth while a tiny blush crept over her features. Finally, as Hisako questioned James, Liz's curiosity overwhelmed her instinctive distrust and stuffed it into a mental closet. “Your wings, they don't actually let you fly, right? I mean, they look like they're supposed to make you glide, like that old Gargoyles show.” Summary: Now that she has to confront the thing she used to be terrified of, Liz's curiosity is winning out over her formerly blind hatred.
