The unique sound of the Harley Davidson’s engine rumbled along the Institute’s driveway, the distinctive popping of the muffler announcing the return of its owner as it grew ever closer to the main building. The superficial confines of the flanking woodland slowly opened up for Logan, exposing the beauty of Xavier’s school and with it the place that he called home. The sunlight gleamed upon the front of Xavier’s mansion as if guiding him forward, the simple reflection of the serene surroundings upon the glass caused Logan to reach for the brakes. From one of the lower windows, even the feral’s superhuman senses were momentarily tricked into thinking that he saw the visage the man who had originally brought him here.

“Chuck?”

But as the motorbike slowed to a halt, the illusion simply passed by, leaving Wolverine staring into the window. rage slowly building in the pit of his stomach. For the past couple of weeks, Logan had been following a number of leads to the possible whereabouts of the Professor or any notion of missing mutants. No matter how improbable or far-fetched, he had traveled over seventeen states for the smallest amount of information that might lead the X-Men to their lost mentor or who could have taken him. But alas there was nothing. Not a single shred of evidence to be found.

After realizing that the start of the new school year approached (and a number messages left by his fellow comrades), Logan had made his way back to the Institute to fulfill his promise to Charles. It was a hard enough decision to make but this year, he was to be the head of foreign languages, a role that his many years of experience and travelling had lent him to. Unfortunately that also meant dealing with kids. For now though, he was content with blaming Scott for this (even though he had agreed to the position before leaving).

Taking out a packet of matches, Logan carefully lit the end of the cigar that was held between his back teeth, before inhaling the strong smoke deep within his lungs. For anyone else, the years of smoking Cuban cigars and alcoholism would have led to an early death, had not been for his regenerative healing factor that forced the toxins out from his bloodstream. With one more intake of nicotine filled smoke, Weapon X continued to drive his bike round to the personal garages.

Once he had secured his ‘pride and joy’ in place and unloaded his gear, Logan made his way towards the main building, hoping to slip back into the Institute unnoticed and equally undisturbed. But in place like this, he knew the chances were slim.

Domino was bleeding. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and it wasn’t as bad as it had been, before she raided the first aid supplies, but there was definitely still blood seeping slowly through the bandage on her side. The wound itself wasn’t terrible, the positioning just sucked. It was a graze, really, and in her defense, the guy had been aiming for her head. She’d take a somewhat deep gouge out of her midsection over a head shot any day. Still, it was bad enough that she’d need actual medical attention. Eventually. She knew a kid in New York - a really shady kind of dude who accepted payment in cash or drugs only - who could heal her enough for it to no be a problem. All she had to do was stop by before it got infected. Until then, she had plenty of pain killers and gauze. It really wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

She headed up from the basement of the main building, weaving carefully around the few students who were busy settling in for the new school year, full of that special kind of “new pencil case” joy that only ever lasted about two weeks before the realization that there were still tests to be taken and rules to be followed hit. It had been years since she actually lived at a school, and the last time she’d done it, it was as a student. Thankfully, she wasn’t stuck in the main building with the children. As she headed out the door, she caught sight of someone who was living in the babysitter house and grinned.

“Sometimes I forget that parents actually let you be near their kids,” she greeted. “I can never decide if they’re too trusting or just flat out stupid.” It was probably some combination of the two, mixed with a little bit of fear. She nodded at his bags as casually as she could with medical supplies tucked under her arm and a bleeding wound that she just knew he’d sniff out hidden under her shirt. “What did you bring me?”

Summary: Dom got shot. Shocking. But it's okay, she swears.

As the gravel crunched underneath his heavy boots, Logan eased off as the scent of fresh blood filled his nostrils; an all too familiar scent for him in an unusual place. The hairs on the back of his neck began to rise instinctively as he dropped off his shoulder and into his hand, readying himself for any eventuality as he heard someone approaching his position. But before he could take another step, his keen eyesight instantly recognized the unique chalk white complication and gray birthmark of the figure advancing towards him. A sight that brought even a cheeky grin to Weapon X’s usual stern features.

After escaping from Stryker’s grasp, Logan had spent many years working for various groups and governments, selling himself as a mercenary for hire like many of his mutant brethren whose gifts lent themselves to combat. It was during this time that he had met Neena, a ‘lucky’ girl whose skill with a gun was as deadly as his own ferocity in battle. The pair had been dropped time after time deep behind enemy lines, outnumbered and outgunned, taking jobs that others would have described as suicide missions. And as with highly dangerous situations, the two had grown close. Maybe at times, too close.

Rolling the cigar from one side of his mouth to the other, Logan quickly raised his fist as he heard Domino’s witty jibe. In a second, the middle of the three adamantium claws broke through the skin, sharing one of Wolverine’s favorite insults before it just as quickly was sheathed again. Scanning over her body, Logan’s blue eyes looked down her curvaceous and athletic figure before noticing the medical supplies under her arm and noting the obvious scent of her wound.

“Who the hell ya’ pissed off now?”

Before waiting for an answer, Logan began to search into his bag, easily finding what he was looking for before staring back at Neena. In his hand, he quickly drew out a six pack of Budweiser, a treat he had intended for himself before starting the new year but on this occasion he was happy to share.

"You look like you need a drink?" As the brown bottles swayed from side to side, he carefully pulled one from the packet before handing it to the wounded sharpshooter. "Don’t say I don’t bring you anything.”

“Raincheck on that,” she nodded at his ever so friendly claw gesture, choosing to read it in a way that was most likely not intended. “Ask me again tomorrow, though.” By then, the worst of the bleeding would hopefully be stopped, assuming she could find that healer kid and throw enough cash at him. When Logan asked who she pissed off, she smiled, holding a finger to her mouth briefly before informing him, “I’ll never tell. But rest assured, he won’t be getting pissed off at anyone else for a very long time.”

“Logan,” she reached for the beer. “For me? You really shouldn’t have.” He’d spent at least a whole dollar of his own money on that beer, and that was a present that was just too expensive. There was a good chance that she shouldn’t have been mixing beer with the medicine she’d tossed back, but Budweiser hardly counted. It was probably safe to drink one… or two. She twisted the cap off with a little bit of a grunt as the motion made the gauze that had stuck to the bullet wound pull back painfully, then took a drink. Swallowing, she looked around. “What’s the rule on open containers here, anyway?”

Not that it particularly mattered. Domino didn’t exactly make a habit of wandering around wasted, but rules like that were made to be broken. She rested a hand against her shirt and held it up to make sure she wasn’t bleeding through it, then asked casually, “So, what’s new?”

Furrowing an eyebrow at the pale skinned beauty’s ‘suggestion’, even Logan’s shattered psyche couldn't help but piece together several flashbacks of the pairs rather steamier interactions from the past. Memories of sweat covered bodies and naked intimate activities all but halted any attempts that he had of making a humorous comeback, mostly as he was unsure whether not she was joking. After all the pair’s relationship at the time had be nothing more than physical and fueled by an insatiable lust, driven more fervently by the violence they dealt out on their missions.

“I’d be surprised if he was or i’d have thought that you might be losing your touch.”

With all of Domino’s skills in espionage, covert ops and her skill with virtually any gun in existence, if her mark wasn't ‘pushing up daisies’ after entering her sights, then there was something really wrong. However, seeing her injured was by no means a pleasantry and even as he flicked out one his claws to open a beer, Logan found his eyes wandering over the patched up wound. It was at times like this that he remembered that not everyone had a healing factor like his own.

“You sure you got that covered?” Tracing up a metallic talon along the side of the bottle, Logan’s claw caught the cap and forced it to fly from the glass and opening up the beer with a satisfying pop. A party trick that never got old for the mutant as he heard the tin lid land on the ground behind him. Taking the lit cigar from his lips, Logan took a long swig from the beer. The carbonated liquid trickling down the back of his throat allowed the feral to forget a little more about the impending nature of his new profession. “If it’s open, you gotta drink it, bub.”

“And as for new. Ain't no sign of the Professor….so Scott’s playing head boy.” Logan’s facial features told exactly how much he approved of taking orders solely from the crimson spectacled jock, as he gave Neena a jovial sneer. It wasn't that he wouldn't take orders from Cyclops but as for liking it, that was a different matter entirely. “And as for me. Well…..glorified babysitter might be a kinder description. How ‘bout you?”

Domino reached for the hem of the shirt and tugged it up past her stomach, turning to give Logan a good look at the bandage. So far, it seemed to be doing a decent job of stemming the blood flow, but she didn’t have a lot of confidence in it being a great long term solution… especially since she’d just tossed back some blood thinning medication and was starting in on a beer. That would all probably add to the bleeding situation. She looked down at it and nodded, finally answering. “It’s covered. I’m medicated. It’s good. I’m going to go see a guy about it later, anyway.”

She smiled at Logan’s decision on the open container policy and held her bottle up in thanks before taking a good, long swig as Logan made no real effort to hide his dislike of the school’s current administrative staff. Or part of it, at least. She’d never personally had any truly negative real run-ins with Cyclops, but the stick up his ass did still look pretty rigid… and it always had, at least as far as she was concerned. Her memory may have been not completely accurate, but the mental image of the teenaged version of the guy who’d shown up at her place in Chicago when she was 15 wasn’t all that far off from the guy who was now running the school, at least in terms of how uptight he seemed to be.

“Nate called me in,” she replied, starting toward the door. Logan looked like he was heading up to stash his things, and there was no sense in loitering outside when there was still that task to be done. “For X-Force. The idea is to keep a permanent team now for taking out the trash that you sons of bitches can’t. So I’m here for that, and I’m also going to teach preschool. Obviously.”

“You know,” Domino started, looking around as they walked through the mansion, “If X had used the ‘you’d get to live in my giant mansion’ angle when he and Summers came to see me as a kid, I probably wouldn’t have been so quick to turn him down.” Really, the place was gorgeous. It was way too nice for a school full of out of control teenagers, if you asked her (which nobody did). She took another sip of the beer and tilted her head. “So, any plans for the rest of the day?”

After taking another long swig of the cheap alcohol, Logan’s blue eyes scrutinized along Neena’s pale skin, the clear scent of her slowly escaping blood assaulting his nostrils without the restraint of her top. It was definitely a gunshot wound, but nowhere near a vital organ and as such would heal in time. However as he continued to stare, his eye line began to wash over the untouched pallid skin covering her toned stomach. A brief moment of animalistic instinct admired the body of a past mate before Domino covered herself up.

Cable.” The name seemed to stir up something deep within the emotionally reserved X-Man, something that was normally deeply suppressed except around one person. For Logan, the arrival of the self-proclaimed time traveler hadn't taken much time to process; in his elongated lifetime, many different technological advancements had occurred that had changed the world that he had lived in time and again. Some of them at the time seemed as far fetched as time travel was today. But it wasn't that, that he had a problem with. It was just something about him that made him uneasy; most likely the fact he was a giant, half robotic and leading a squad of misfits that were like a glorified Weapon X programme. “Keeps you out trouble and off the streets.”

“How long you been here for? You know your way around yet?” As the pair walked through the main building, Logan couldn't see what Neena was meaning by the attraction of living in such grandeur. For him, the closed in nature of the walls and ornate wood furnishings were nothing more than claustrophobic clutter that was unnecessary for his living style. But as they walked through the corridors and up towards his room, Logan could hear the excitement of young mutants as they milled around the mansion, eager to start the new year and settle into their new lives.

“Better than the squalor we were posted to in Sudan.” As the two of them arrived at Wolverine’s quarters, Logan slowly admired the silence and simplicity of his own room after successfully dodging through seemingly unending hordes of kids. Draining the rest of the bottle in his hand, Logan wiped a few droplets of beer from his unshaven face before placing the bottle down onto the side of his room. Quickly the now dull cigar was back between his teeth, as he slung his bag onto the bed and turned to reply to his guest.

“So far, I plan on finishing the rest of these. About as far as I've planned, Lucky.”

Cable,” she echoed, doing her very best gruff Logan impression, then taking another swig of the beer. It was exhausting, keeping track of who all knew each other and how, and who was looking to kill who, for what reasons… really, it was too much to keep up with, and half of the time, she didn’t even bother. Given the backgrounds that the two of them had, though, she wasn’t all that surprised to hear that Logan seemed to have some kind of issue with Nate. She pointed her bottle at him and asked, “Did you two have a thing? Jilted ex-lovers, or something?”

That was a strange mental image, but it was one that she could definitely work with, and she smiled faintly, tilting her head and making absolutely no effort to hide the fact that she was picturing it. No, never mind. That was weird. She nodded in agreement as Logan decided that giving her a position on some fancy new X-Team would keep her out of trouble. Patting her side carefully, she remarked, “Seems to be working so far.”

“I’ve been here a little while. More than enough time to figure it out, but I’m sure there are still all kinds of nooks and crannies that you can show me.” She followed him through the building, realizing that one thing she had yet to do was find out who was living where, exactly. She knew where most of her teammates were bunking, but hadn’t really bothered looking into the X-Men themselves. When they reached his room, she stepped in without waiting for an invitation, and gave it an appraising once-over.

“This place is better than about 70% of the places I’ve had to work.” She dropped her slightly stolen medical supplies on his desk and headed across the room to check out his interior decorating tastes. She opened a drawer and peered inside, closing it again as he informed her that he had no real plans for the day. Turning, she smiled. “Well, in that case, how about a field trip?”

“See, I’m bleeding out just a little bit,” she held her fingers up to demonstrate just how little of a bit she was bleeding and perched carefully on the edge of his bed, grateful that the pills she’d tossed back downstairs seemed to be kicking in. Taking another sip of her beer, she continued, “I could really use a ride. I’ll have you back by dinner, and I'll make it worth your while."

“Just don’t trust him that’s all. Got a scent I can’t place and face that only a mother could love.”

A low guttural snarl escaped from Logan’s lips as the pasty-skinned girl picked at his feeling towards the genetically engineered soldier with a standard sexual remark. There was just something off about him that made the feral on ‘edge’, he couldn’t quite place it specifically but for all the lost memories he had, he was unsure whether the pair had met before or whether he was just being typically hostile towards outsiders. Throwing his keys to one side, Logan’s stare caught Neena as mentioned a ‘field trip’, catching sight of her glancing through one of his drawers.

“A field trip?”

Slamming his hand against the draw behind her, Weapon X couldn’t help but feel his agitation rise at the young girl’s playful and curious nature, his teeth biting hard down on the Cuban tobacco to stave off another snarl from escaping his mouth. The drawer rocked momentarily from the initial force of Logan’s heavy hands forcefully against it, but as he turned back, Neena had moved once again and was now perched on the end of his bed with her top up once again. If he hadn’t known her so well, he wouldn’t have thought it was some kind of advance but she had never been so subtle.

After hearing what she had planned and everything that was going on inside the mansion and the ever present possible annoyance of having to interact with the young-lings before he actually had to, Logan could do nothing but accept. The last thing he wanted to do before the beginning of the school year was to have to listen to one of them already missing home, having falling out with their dorm buddy or simply overexcited to meet one of their favorite X-Men. Also, without the Professor for reassurance that he wouldn't ‘accidentally’ beat the living snot out of one of them for crossing him, it seemed like a good idea to drive Domino to her ‘healer’ friend after all.

“If it stops you going through my shit, I’d happily walk you into hell itself. No ‘worth whiling’ needed.’”

Heading towards the door, Logan picked up his keys from where they had landed only moments ago before turning to beckon Domino to follow him. If they were going to go, they better go now before even his regenerative healing factor would have trouble removing the large amount of alcohol he planned on ingesting.

“What are you waitin’ for then? A written invitation?”

Domino laughed at Logan’s assessment of Nate’s face, opening her mouth to let him know that he wasn’t really one to talk, then deciding against it. Even through the haze provided by the pain killers, she knew that sometimes it was best to not entirely antagonize the person you were about to ask for a favor. Sometimes. Not entirely ready to just walk out without annoying Logan just a little bit, she peered into a drawer, grinning at his reaction. She walked away as casually as possible and sat down on his bed. She’d hoped that the bleeding would stop, but even though it had finally slowed a little bit, it didn’t seem to be actually stopping. It was probably a good idea to go pay that kid a visit sooner rather than later.

“Nothing will stop me from going through your shit if I really want to,” she shook her head. “But it would definitely stop me now.” Dom really didn’t have plans to dig through his things, but it was good to know that it bothered him so much. Tipping her bottle back, she finished off the last of her beer. No sense in letting it go to waste.

“That was where you’re supposed to say 'No, Dom, your mere company is worth much more than whatever compensation you were going to offer,'” she informed him. “It was a cheeseburger, by the way. I was even going to throw in fries and beer. Your loss.” She stood finally, rolling her eyes at Logan's whining as she tossed her empty bottle in the general direction of his trash can. It hit the rim and, after teetering for a moment, dropped in with a heavy thunk.

“I’d say yes if I believed for one second that you owned anything even remotely close to stationery,” she replied, making her way to scoop up her bundle of supplies before meeting him at the door. “Your car or mine?”

As Neena began to explain to Logan sarcastically what she wanted him to say, he couldn't help but give her a quizzical look of 'do you remember who the fuck you're talking to.' But all the hostility swiftly drained away as she continued about the reward that he was no longer going to receive that was surprisingly (and maybe a little disappointingly) non sexual. For a moment after even the deadly Weapon X felt a small pang of regret as he realized how even for him, he was being harsh.

Maybe had been the past couple of months alone on the road that had made him forget how to interact with people. Maybe it was seeing someone from his life before the Institute here in his new home. Or simply was it the absence of Charles that was allowing more of his primitive behavior to surface. Either way; Logan apologized. In his own way.

"Just come the fuck on and you're still getting me the burger."

Few moments later.....

Once the rather strange looking couple had made their way down to the personal garages, Logan slowly sauntered along the row of vehicles, looking for one car in particular. Walking past his own recently parked Harley, still caked in a thick layer of dirt from the hours of riding cross country, the feral had to pass by a number of other shared X-Men transports before he spotted exactly what he was looking for at the end of the row. A smirk grew across weathered skin as he moved along the side of the sleek Mazda MX-5, the pristine bodywork gleaming in the artificial light.

It took Logan a moment to pull himself from jumping into the crimson eyed boy scout’s car and force himself to move back down the garage to the X-force marksman’s vehicle. Whether it was that he didn't want to cause tension between the pair so soon into the term or just down to the fact that he was wary of Scott’s threat to install a suitable deterrent after his last ‘joyride’.

"Cheers, Neena." Logan blurted out quickly as with the soft top down, the adamantium badger simply jumped into the open seat of Domino’s Jaguar XKR, the suspension groaning under the increased weight of his indestructible skeleton. Wolverine began to position the seat to suit his smaller stature than the car’s rightful owner, awaiting his bleeding out passenger and an idea of her desired destination. "Never said I had a 'car'."

She wasn’t entirely positive, but Domino suspected that the look that had flashed on Logan’s face was one of regret. She did her best to not outright grin at his response, because gloating was an awful idea. Burgers had never actually been a part of the plan, but she was just fine with swapping them in. Maybe once he was all fed and she was bleeding less, he’d be in a better mood. Then, she’d bring up the idea of some other kind of compensation.

Domino let Logan lead the way down to the garage, watching him as he walked ahead of her. There was a good chance that it was entirely the painkillers’ fault, but she had never realized until just then how amusing his hair was from behind, especially when he was walking. She frowned as they passed his motorcycle, which was absolutely disgusting. She'd seen it dirty, but she wasn't sure she'd ever seen it that dirty. Before she could really comment on it, though, he was stopping and staring at a car that definitely wasn't his or hers. Shaking her head, she dug her car key out of a pocket and tossed it at him.

Logan, of course, chose the most direct route. Coincidentally, it was also the one most likely to end up bending her car's frame, and she sighed dramatically as she carefully opened the passenger side door and slipped in. "If you so much as dent my car, I'll shoot you in the face. Multiple times. But you're welcome.”

“The guy we’re going to see lives in Brooklyn,” she informed Logan, leaning forward to turn on the radio, settling on a top 40 station and not really giving a shit about whether or not Logan really wanted to listen to today’s hits. She sat back, reclining her seat slightly as they headed out. "No smoking those cigars in here, by the way. The stench is going to ruin my leather. Also, it stunts your growth."

Summary: Dom thinks Logan's hair is funny, and hopes he drives safely, because she doesn't really want to have to shoot him.

For a moment, Logan considered that jovial yet stern threat that Neena offered in the event of him denting or smoking in her car. Knowing full well that she would have no qualms about riddling his head with any number of holes. In this eventuality, everything would be nothing more than a brief inconvenience to Wolverine’s healing factor. However knowing that the markswoman was now on campus, the last thing he needed was the inevitable, numerous complaints and the copious amounts of therapy that a class of pupils would need after seeing their teacher's metallic skull exposed through various holes in his head.

“Ha ha ha….”

Allowing his false laughter to die away, Logan’s boot thumped on the gas, sending Domino's car forward at an incredible rate as they set off down the Institute's driveway. The same driveway he had only just returned on. Air wisped through their ears, slightly dulling the sound of the radio as the gates opened and the pair made their way towards Brooklyn.

A little while later....

As the adamantium badger and his 'lucky' companion found themselves on the outskirts of Brooklyn, Logan saw an opportunity to turn off the tedious sounds of teen pop, sharply stabbing at the off button. Wolverine was not known for his love of music, often finding it a distraction and on some occasions a hindrance to his animalistic senses. Plus he was more a fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

“Who's this healer guy? Another one of ur' contacts? Ex-boyfriend?"

"If you just screwed up my pre-set radio stations, I'm going to end you." Domino rolled her head to narrow her eyes at Logan, not even bothering to downplay the fact that the pain killers were working at full strength, making her speech ever so slurred and her eyelids incredibly heavy. Her threat, too, wasn't nearly as forceful as it normally would have been, and she looked down at her shirt, frowning. She'd forgotten to slap a new piece of gauze on during the ride, and the blood had soaked through.

"Ugh, no." Domino frowned at the idea of the kid being someone who could even think to consider himself an ex-anything of hers. "He wishes. He's just some kid." She shifted in her seat and reached for the bag of medical supplies. Might as well try to plug it up so she didn't stain anything else. "I don't even think I know his name. I always just call him kid. He hates it when you call him kid."

"Make sure you talk over him when he tries to tell you his codename." She grinned as she peeled the old gauze off, tossing it out the window. "He gave himself a codename. He feels very strongly about it." She put the new gauze on and tried to sop up the blood in her shirt with another piece, leaning in to punch in the address on her GPS before she forgot that she was supposed to be giving him directions. It got a little bit trickier once they were actually in the city, and she wasn't very likely to remember all of the turns. "There. Go there."

Summary: Dom sort of remembers where to go, and she's still bleeding.
