Dani had been in the stables for the better part of the morning, spending the majority of her time fawning over Brightwind, brushing out his tail and mane and just enjoying the company. Part of her was always going to prefer him to any person in the world. That was just the way things went. She had twined her braids up around her head in what probably should have been an elegant and extravagant sort of style on anyone who took time with it, but made Dani look a little bit like she had just been through a tornado. There were wisps of hair escaping from every which way, and she had managed to get hay and dirt in it as well. Brightwind had also been having fun nudging against it in an attempt to knock it down mostly because he knew it annoyed Dani as she had shared that feeling with him at least a dozen times over the past couple of hours.

"We're not going riding if you don't start behaving yourself," she muttered to him as she ducked away from another attempt at a nuzzle. The statement was accompanied with a raised index finger, an almost universal warning gesture as far as Dani was concerned. Even if they were being used on a horse. A horse who should know better.

Brightwind pawed at the ground and made a noise that Dani knew was meant to be placating but wasn't sure that he entirely meant it. "Nope. I don't accept that apology. Not yet." Putting both her hands on her head, Dani used one hand to push the hair back where it was supposed to be while using the other to seek out and redo the pins. "Now I'm taking care of the rest of the horses before I focus on you again."

Once her hair was back where it should be, which didn't make it any less of a wreck, Dani wiped her hands on her jeans, adjusted her belt a little and then started out of his stall to head to the next one. Turning around to look at her horse, she continued walking backwards. "Don't you dare be a baby about it, either."

When she turned around, she was just barely able to stop herself before running into Sam Guthrie. Before she even said a word to him, Dani instinctively put more space between them. It wasn't meant to convey anything other than the fact that she wanted a slightly larger bubble. "Morning. Looks like I beat you out here today." Dani might have started keeping a running tally of who managed to get to the stable the earliest each morning shortly after she came to the school, the existence of which was never uttered and the results never released.

Summary: Dani's just a little bit competitive.

Sam Guthrie had already had a long day and it had barely even started.

First, some girl that came in a few days early apparently had the opposite power of Shadowcat and limited control, and had massed up and put a foot through a floorboard. So Sammy had been working on that for an hour or so. He'd then thought about flying, and the bottom of the sky seemed to drop out as the heavens decided to pour a lot of water on him.

Thinking it was a sign, Sam had angled close to the Stables as he had to land, and got inside quickly. His jeans, t-shirt, and flannel overshirt were soaked, as was his blonde hair. Yet despite his somewhat disheveled appearance, Sam was smiling.

After all, work, flight and messing around wasn't a bad thing despite how some tended to gripe about work.

Sam was a bit shocked as he was distracted by thinking when he wandered in. As such, he almost ran over Dani before slamming on the breaks. Blue eyes widened as Sam was pretty sure they were about to run right into each other, but that was followed by a sigh of relief as Dani's reflexes were as sharp as ever. Rubbing the back of his neck with one hand as he looked at the ground sheepishly, Sam said "Dang it! Sorry about that Dani." Shaking his head, Sam said "Guess I was thinkin' to much and not lookin'."

A slight smile appeared on Sam's face as Dani mentioned beating him. "Got a little sidetracked by working on stuff," Sam explained. "Figure have to earn my keep sometimes, and repairing things helps with that." For his part, Sam was just breathing in the aromas of sawdust, hay, and other less pleasant odors any barn had. While Sam's family might have been more farmers, Sammy still knew about horses. So it was something that kind of reminded him of home a bit.

"So did you leave me anythin' to do out here, or did I make a trip for nothin'?" Sam teased Dani. He really wasn't sure if Mirage would be competitive enough to have done everything, but he could see it. Course he could also see her leaving ample for him to do as well. As he asked that, Sam looked around the place to see if there was anything to do, just ready to do anything that he thought needed doing.

Apologetic and willing to take the blame as ever. Well that was Sam Guthrie for you. "Not all your fault. I was being distracted by the world's most obnoxious horse and not watching where I was going either." From inside his stall, Brightwind let out a disgruntled huff of air. "In short, I'm also sorry for not paying attention. You should apologize less for things that aren't completely your fault." Dani doubted the words would stick this time anymore than they had previously.

It took longer than she would have liked to admit--mostly due in part to the aforementioned obnoxious horse--but Dani finally noticed that Sam was dripping wet. Soaked to the skin was the first expression that popped into her mind followed quickly by that song lyric about corn being as high as an elephant's eye. Dani wasn't quite sure how high that was, but it had to be close to catching up with him considering how he loomed over her. And, yeah, that wasn't much of a feat. After all there were several fourteen year old students who also loomed over her, but they still weren't quite Sam tall. "What were you fixing? The mansion's plumbing or the bottom of the lake? If it's the latter, I'm pretty sure we don't need to do that. And if we do surely there's someone with a power better inclined for it," she teased even though she had heard the rain. This way was more fun.

As he asked her whether there was anything left to do, Dani grabbed a clean saddle cloth and tossed it at him. "Heads up, Guthrie. Dry yourself off a bit and then I might just have a few things you can give me a hand doing. Said obnoxious horse," a neigh of protest followed her words, "also kept me from getting around to completing everything before you came dripping in." Maybe a few did mean most of them, but she didn't need to go ahead and admit to that. The win was still hers for getting out there faster anyway.

Summary: Dani proves herself capable of quipping.

Sam disagreed with Dani saying he shouldn't apologize. Way he saw it, was partially his fault, so he needed to apologize for his part of it. "Ain't sayin' it was all my fault," Sam drawled. "And God help me if Paige hears of me bein' rude and tells mom." Shaking his head, Sam smiled ruefully and said "Think I'd be better off tackling Magneto if it comes down to that or mom gettin' on to me."

Smirking at Dani as she teased if he'd been working at the bottom of the lake. "Nothing that fancy," Sam said. Grinning as he teased back, Sam said in a false serious voice "See, they had this report of the sky leaking and they sent me to fix it. While up there, figured the only way I'd fix it was if I beat you here." Shaking his head slightly, Sam acted mournful as he said "So it obviously ain't getting fixed today."

His acting resulted in him being slow on the draw in catching the towel. Feeling it hitting his face, Sam caught it before it hit the ground and started drying himself a little. Looking at Brightwind, Guthrie said "Brightwind? Obnoxious? Must be talking about another horse." Following Dani, Sam noticed that some of the chores like cleaning stalls and putting out hay hadn't been done yet. Sam was tempted to point it out, but had the feeling that it would just start a fight of some sort. Probably not a good idea to mention that, Sam thought. Slipping on a pair of work gloves, Sam said "So what do we have up first boss?" Sam wasn't that worried, as it would give him something to do while waiting the storm out.

Summary: Sammy has some common sense at times.

"Since I'd hate for your sister to bring your mother anything other than glowing reports, I accept your apology for the small part you had to play in our almost collision that didn't even happen." Dani liked the Guthries, but there were some areas where they tended to sort of overdo things. Politeness was one of those. It was endearing, but it could also get a little tedious. Especially when it came to getting yourself out of the loop of apologies although she had mostly figured out how to duck it. "But I'm still leaving my previous observation out there as a salient point. Take it or leave it." Dani had always been a fan of having the last word on any given subject.

Her grin got wider as he got into the game. Nodding along with his story, she managed a mock frown at his statement about it not getting fixed that day. "Well, I'm sorry I ruined your mission. I could give you a hand with it, though. Patching up the sky can't be that hard, right? Especially not for the two of us. Let me a hammer, an umbrella and maybe some duct tape since that seems to fix everything. Then you can just fly us up there," she put her hand out and up as she said it to emphasis her point, "and we'll go right to it. Alternatively, I guess you could just wait and see if you have better luck tomorrow." Ha. Right. As if there was any way she'd let him beat her out tomorrow if they had already established the game, but she had to at least throw it out there.

Brightwind made an appreciative noise at Sam's remarks, and Dani turned toward her horse, arching an eyebrow at him. "Have you got him wrapped around your hoof, too?" Then she focused her attention back to poor, wet, semi-distracting Sam. Who was still being sweet considering how he hadn't uttered a word about all the things she hadn't gotten to yet. If it had been the other way round, she would have been checking off the list as they walked. Some people's children had been raised to be nicer apparently.

"Oh, I thought maybe I'd let you make the calls. At least a few. Since you're all wet for one, and it's my fault that you didn't get the sky fixed because I was already here." Plus she had already been there for hours and not gotten nearly anything she was supposed to done, and he'd been quiet about it. Dani could give an inch in that case. "But if you slip up, Guthrie," she warned, pulling on her own set of gloves, "I'll be sure to take over."

Summary: Dani's still convinced that Sam is suffering from terminal nice guy. Actual nice guy, though. Not the fedora sort.

Grinning broadly at Dani's remarks about him not being able to fix it that day and to try again tomorrow to see if he had better luck, Sam drawled easily "Reckon luck ain't ever bad in such a mess. Sometimes it even beats skill at times." Sam had seen it plenty of times in his life, especially among mutants capable of manipulating probability with the same effort it'd take him to change his shoes. And in reality, he reckoned that luck played a big role with mutants. He'd been lucky to have his powers or he'd been dead many times over, mainly as he'd have died as a kid in the mines without them. So Sam didn't mind the role of luck in his life.

Though he did have to admit, there weren't many around capable of getting up as early as him consistently. Dani was one of the few that was stubborn enough to try. Guess with this game, we get to see if she can run the distance as well. Guthrie thought to himself with a smile. He knew that Mirage might be willing to get up due to competitiveness to whip him at least some days. Now if she could every day was another story that Sam wasn't sure about. In any case, he figured that win or lose it'd be fun to see and try.

Sam acted as if he was seriously considering flying Dani up to help fix the sky, frown furrowing and brow lowering in thought. "Might need more than an umbrella," Sam teased. "Maybe a wetsuit or something. And some staples to pin the thing together and maybe glue." Nodding in fake solemnity, Sam said "Complicated fix obviously."

Hearing Dani ask if Brightwind had him wrapped around a hoof, Cannonball chuckled and said "Makes it sound like the horse wins people over by kickin' the tar out of them and balling them up around a foot." Stepping nearer the horse and lightly rubbing Brightwind's nose after letting the horse smell it, Sam said "Figure most horses just like food, brushin' and excercisin'. Do that enough and most get to where they like a fella tossin' out feed to them."

Looking around and noticing that the hay hadn't quite been done yet and that the stalls still needed cleaning, Sam weighted the chores in his mind. Moving hay and tossing it in mangers was physically more demanding than cleaning the eventual aftermath of horses eating from the stall. But on the other hand, handling a wheel barrel full of horse feces might be less physically demanding, but was less fun of a job.

Besides, he was pretty sure Dani would want to kick his ass if he gave her the physically easy job. Plus bad smells beats gettin' a lot of hay stuck in my shirt since it is wet and all, Sam thought. "Reckon I'll handle the stall muckin' if you want to tackle the hay," Cannonball said. Grabbing the cart and a sifting pitchfork, he headed to the nearest stall and got ready to work.

Summary: Just cleaning stalls and stuff beside one of the few that gets up earlier than Sammy.

Dani wasn't as willing to leave things up to luck as some other people might be even if she had seen how it worked out for some mutants. For one thing, luck had not been on her side most of her life. No, Dani had learned that most of time you needed to be able to roll with the punches that luck threw you. Preparation for the worst was what that normally meant and being a part of the X-Men was perfect for that mindset.

Having a history of not sleeping very well sort of gave her an advantage when it came to getting up early. It was a good night when Dani didn't wake up from a nightmare that left her too alert to drift back to sleep even if she had only slept for maybe three hours. Years of that meant that Dani preferred power naps to actually sleeping for long periods of time. It didn't prevent the bad dreams from coming, but it at least made her feel more in control.

"Wetsuits, huh?" she asked, quirking an eyebrow at him. "Battle uniforms not tight enough for you? And here I thought they left remarkably little to the imagination." It was not nice or really even fair to tease Sam so, but she just couldn't make herself leave it out there either. She was always leaving it just veiled enough that it could be taken innocently. "Maybe some caulk too."

Brightwind took right to Sam's attentions, making a big show of being affectionate with him, which made Dani roll her eyes. "Don't give him any ideas." Then she tapped a finger against her temple. "You're underestimating him. Trust me. I know. He's a devious beast." Maybe it was because he was hers, but Brightwind was stubborn and liked to have his own way. Of course then he would prove her wrong by acting sweet with other people.

Dani would have happily kicked Sam's ass if he gave her the easy job so when he suggested the chore dispersal, she nodded in approval. She was fine getting covered in hay, but then she wasn't quite as wet as he was. "Done. Are we racing?" she asked, a gleam in her eyes even as she moved to get started.

Summary: Most things are a contest when Dani is concerned.
