I discovered this cool game. You are given a word with four possible synonyms, all you have to do is click on which one is correct.
For each word you get right 20 grains of rice is donated to starving people through the UN World Hunger Program.
The money for the rice comes from an advertisement at the bottom of each page.
I think it's a fabulous idea.
It's really addictive, and the word's get progressively harder so it should, in theory, even help you with your writing.

"Will the rice I donate make a difference?

The rice you donate makes a huge difference to the person who receives it. According to the United Nations, about 25,000 people die each day from hunger or hunger-related causes, most of them children. To a mother or father watching a loved child die in their arms from hunger, the rice you donate is more precious than anything in the world."

Give it a go.

I'd actually already heard of this. I haven't done much- I only have around 4300 grains donated.

My new favorite words thanks to FreeRice:
Choleric= Hot Tempered
Temerity= Boldness
Sordid= Vile
Veridescent= Greenish

I haven't been on there in a while. Thanks for reminding me!

I think we need to make this a pinned post. I remember saying something about it last year or earlier this year... (I am going to guess last year, because it's been a while since I've last been online.) but, well, y'know, old posts get deleted. But this one should not be!

But anyway, somebody, pin this post please! And be all, "Free Rice: Save lives, boost your vocabulary! DO IT NOW."

Honestly, we should be paying more attention to the people in our own towns who are freezing to death in the winter. Or the mental state of those in large cities.

This is a neat idea, and it wasn't posted all that long ago. A few months or so.

Oh, sorry. I didn't realise it had been posted before. Oh well it can be a reminder.

I agree that more attention could be payed to those closer to home that need help. But I, personally, find the people you help with free rice are in a worse situation, for a variety of reasons. One of them being that in our societies we're talking about a minority, where as over there we're talking about a majority. That alone makes a huge difference to me. I don't want to get into a disagreement with anyone over who is more important and why, so I'm going to be quiet now before I start ranting. :)

I don't think it should be either or. I think that you should look at different situations seperately. This game is quick and easy and I don't see what anyone can loose by playing it, if anything they gain an improved vocabulary.

Does anyone remember the name of that search engine that was designed as an alternative to google where the profit from the advertisements for each search went to a charity of your choice?

It was goodsearch. C:
at night they'd go walking,
till the break of the day.
the morning's for sleeping
through the dark streets they go searching,
to see god in their own way.
save the night time for your weeping
your weeping.

I play that game too, because my library's website has it. I was more attracted to the food part rather than the building-your-vocabulary part.

Just wanted to let everyone know that FreeRice now has multiple subjects going. In addition to 60 levels of English vocabulary, they have added English grammar, as well as German, French, Italian and Spanish vocabulary; famous paintings; scientific symbols; and multiplication. In case you'd gotten bored with endless English (I know I had), now you can boost your knowledge of other languages or refresh your simple mathematics.

The site's monthly totals have been declining slightly, probably because people have been forgetting about it. Don't! It's better than ever.

I love free rice. I can just have it in another window and do it while other things are loading. I've done like 50000 grains in one sitting once. But after a while you start getting the same words. Especially in the foreign language subjects where there aren't as many levels.

Ever try the elemental symbols? That one gets me, 'cause I keep thinking I know them well and then I fail. xD;

I stick to what I know I know. xD Which means pretty much all of the foreign languages because you really only have to know one romance language to get them all at least when it's a multiple choice definition question. I probably couldn't actually speak those languages without some teaching.

It's a random thought, but Shadowed and I have remembered this site yet again. It's now on version 2.0, and they now have accounts and groups, so you can not only track your permanent totals, but band together to compete in rice-making with other groups! Kind of fun. I'm curious whether anyone on TUL is still using FreeRice, and whether we could perhaps make a FreeRice TUL group?
