Just a personal comment:

I remember a time when the C-Box was used plenty for people trying to hook up roleplays. It was an easy, really fast way to develop a concept with someone else who was on TUL at that very moment, and to get going on the roleplay within a day of wanting it.

Maybe its current purpose has evolved. I don't know. Back then, the roleplay ad section worked differently, too. All I know is that I've always thought it a boon to have a place where anyone can talk about anything (reasonable) without having to get each other's contact information first. As the 'anyone' and 'everything', it is fully capable of maintaining multiple threads of conversation simultaneously.
The unfortunate part of the cbox is that this one is not the same as the old, paid for one. While it is fully capable of maintaining multiple threads of conversation, it's evolved to the point of just being the roleplay ad section - where anyone who ISN'T taking about roleplays is getting cut out, because that's all anyone on it is talking about. That, and the attitude of the people on the cbox, are the two main factors towards the alienation of members.

It also has a great deal to do with how it's done. The cbox is no longer used just for 'hey, want to roleplay?' comments and brief beginnings. It's used to completely plan out roleplays now, which is what blocks out everyone else who wants to use it.
Locke, being one of the blabbermouths on the cbox, I want to say that's not true. I'm not trying to call you out or say you're a liar, I'm just saying that I've pretty much got no life and I'm on here for hours at a shot. It depends on how many people are on. Like, at this moment, 10:15 eastern standard time, I see one RP discussion (to the side) and for ever RP-esque chatline, there is eight lines of conversation about our newbies, about each other, and about random stuff.

When just two people are on and they are rping with each other, it should be okay to discuss what may happen next with one or two quick lines than having to go through and PM. Instead of changing pages at least four times, you don't even have to refresh. Dial-up people like me are very happy for this. I also don't have AIM or YIM or any other IM, and I'm grateful for the box to ask certain things quickly in the midst of a reply, or whatever.

I won't say certain people get cut out, though. I won't deny you there. Sometimes, people get wrapped up and don't notice, or some people ignore. But changing the cbox over a few instances? Its function at the moment is massively important, especially with the newbies(Thank you Tears for advertising for us!) and I think messing with it at all isn't needed.

That being said; I love you Locke and we're trying our best to make the newbies feel adjusted <333333333

I'll watch the night turn light blue
But it's not the same without you
Because it takes two to whisper quietly
The silence isn't so bad
Till I look at my hands and feel sad
Because the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly

Yeah, you better, or I'll PUNCH YOU ALL IN THE FACE.

As is, just joking. When it's all said and done, though, we're going to change a lot of things - and one of them, unfortunately, is going to be implementing rules for the cbox. Right now, you're right, things are fine, but that's because there are immense activities going on here that far outrun most of the roleplays running. New people, new changes, new boards - it's exciting and different, and people will talk about it, which is what they're doing. What I'm worried about is a regression to what it used to be, as well as making sure we don't get spammed through it.

Hurr, we are helpful links.

Advertising is the key thing. Advertising and retention, both of which we've been lacking in lately.

I can only do advertising for a little while, it's not something I can do on a regular basis. But I can go at it often when I get into it.

And as for the Cbox, I agree, it's really good as an easy way to get a role play started. But the endless and hard-to-get-into conversation about a certain role play that the two people are involved in is really really difficult. If that's what you want to do, there are PM's. BUT for starting a role play, or setting it up, or saying 'I posted' is fine, and it's awfully annoying when you're not allowed to do that at all. xD

Sometimes when advertising I promise I'll role play with the person once they're accepted and in. It's a pretty good way to get people to join and stay there. In theory, anyways.

So, continuing from our older, previous topic (I'm not linking it because, seriously, it's the ONLY OTHER TOPIC in this section of the forum), it's time to take a look at the things up and coming for TUL. We're moving into the full-on reset, which will occur (most likely) on Saturday, November 21, at 8:00 PM EST and could take 1-2 hours, not withstanding any interruptions or delays on our end. That said, we'd like you to take a look at what's upcoming for TUL in it's new form.

First of the major changes is that we're moving to a 'winter' themed skin, which will also replace the summer skin. It's a nice skin, and a slightly modified version of the Zetaboards Support winter theme developed by Nicola of the same board last year. The old and current skin, however, will always be on the site, and - using the Theme Selector at the bottom of the board - will continue to be available until a new, suitable default skin is found.

Another change comes to the functional layout of the board. There's going to be a shuffle of the forums, such as the Official Information Desk becoming the Bulletin Board, and moving The Application Center out on to the main index, to make it more readily available to guests and validating members. The Reviews, Battle Arena, and TULU are removed (for now), with expectations that both Reviews and TULU will come along not soon after the upcoming change. The Gallery will also be removed, except to be replaced with a new forum that helps incorporate member-to-member reviews rather than a professional team.

Three of the biggest rule changes, however, focus on the roleplays themselves. Continuing on a path that's been moving for a while, the //, Mature, and onexone forums will be incorporated completely into the rest of the board, with roleplays moved to their appropriate category. Anyone wishing to roleplay //, Mature, or have a onexone, however, fear not - you simply have to say so in the topic description.

The next change to roleplays is the new cut-off date, where old, dusty roleplays are moved to the archive two months after the last reply. This will help keep the main roleplay area clean, as well as ensure that the only roleplays visible in the roleplays section are those that are active, alive, and new.

And this, of course, leads us to the new outlines of both the cbox and the Roleplay Promotions and Planning board. Due to many complaints from members across the board, super-long discussions about what to happen next for a roleplay need to STAY OFF the cbox - and into the RPP board. This board will also have some new guidelines in it (or, actually, relatively less), which are still being worked out prior to the maintenance update.

A final, new addition is that of the 'Karma' system. In this system, you can rate someone according to the actions they take - such as a good roleplayer, add Karma; always responds late, subtract a Karma point. This is, as it goes, a TEMPORARY system, to judge how it works. More information and rules will be available after the update.

Alright, well, looking over it, I believe that's it. There's a lot of work to be done, and we'll keep the board posted on it as we move forward. If you have comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns, as always, this is the place to put them!

Cheers,
Locke
