Welcome to The United Literates, or TUL! We hope you enjoy your visit!

We're one of the largest all-genre, all-literate forums on the Zathyrus Networks, and we'd love to have you join! Our roleplays range from the fun to the mature, and are all member-run and created, extending from Fictional roleplays set in the past and future, to Real-Life and Fan-Fiction categories. In addition to roleplays, TUL also has a vibrant community of artists and writers, featured in The Cafe section of the website, who also love to do things out of character through our Lounge area.

Right now, you're viewing the forum as a guest, which means you only have limited access to the board and it's features. To join TUL and start roleplaying with us, all you have to do is click the link below, register, and pass through our applications process. So what are you waiting for?

Cafe Posting Rules
For Authors and Artists

Welcome to the Cafe, a place where you can show off all of your skills in writing and art - including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, lyrics, photography, painting, digital art, and more! Primarily, the Cafe is a place where you can show off your work and, if you like, get it reviewed by members and our professional review team.

1) Unlike other areas of the site, all types and genres of work are allow here, including posts that might be rated an 'R' or 'NC-17'. However, if you do chose to post one of these more mature pieces, we ask that you post a disclaimer about the content of the piece.

2) Please, as always, refrain from stealing others' works. We tend to get angry when you do, and, as far as it goes, the consequence can range from a suspension to a permanent ban based on how an administrator is feeling at the time.

3) Do not post 'sections' of a work. Post the whole thing, or prepare to get your work locked.

4) Please, please, please run your post through a word processor with spell-check before you put it up here. A few grammar and spelling mistakes are forgivable at any level, but any more than one or two every thousand words is a bit much.

5) If you'd like to have your work reviewed, we ask that you use the (cleverly-devised) system below, posting one of the following ratings in your Topic Description.

Quote:

Category 0: Tropical Storm
At this level, you can commonly expect simple critique; nothing too harsh or damaging, just simple fixes and basic advice for better pieces. Most of the comments at this level will be little more than the compliments of a non-reviewed piece - essentially, if you don't have anything good to say about the piece, don't say anything at all.

Category 1: Minor Hurricane
When entering the actual numbered categories, you'll start to find that the compliments have become words of gentle criticism. Use this level if you want people to tell you what parts were good, and what parts were bad. Nothing too horrible, just simple reviews.

Category 2: Moderate Hurricane
Further on than the earlier levels, this level of criticism is for those artists that want more than just the 'beginners' critique. It contains more than just what's good and what's bad - rather, it contains points on how to improve one's skills and technique. Still nothing too damaging.

Category 3: Intense Hurricane
As an artist moves up in levels, they'll find themselves at Cat. 3, where their art is beginning to get recognition and is beginning to be treated with more respect by their peers - and with this increasing respect comes an increasing amount of criticism. Critiques given at this level are roughly where a newbie to roleplaying - and the art world in general - should stop. Here, reviews detail not just what is good and bad, but WHY these items are good and bad.

Category 4: Severe Hurricane
As in weather, there comes a time when a progressing artist desires major criticism. At this level, the gloves come off, so expect pretty rough critique of every part of your piece, top to bottom. When entering these upper levels, use caution: it is recommended you should not move up into this level unless you've had several positive reviews in the lower categories - a newbie is asked only to start at this level only if they are ABSOLUTELY sure their work makes the cut of a Cat. 3. Writing at this level is expected to be high-quality and close to flawless in terms of syntax, and art is expected to be extremely well-developed and ready for public viewing - anything less will be harshly revoked.

Category 5: Extreme Hurricane
At this level, the pads are removed and the reviewers who are playing this game are twice as big as you and weigh three times as much. Reviewers certified for this level (and you have to be CERTIFIED to review F5 works) are extremely picky, and are absolutely ready to tear you apart. The sign that hangs above this door reads "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here". To put it plainly, you cannot get a review at this level unless you have performed many times in the lower levels - it is absolutely required that you have at least three (3) Cat. 3+ reviews before moving up to this level.

Category 6: Inconceivable Hurricane
This is the sort of situation invented only for those who are prepared to take their work to a major publisher or distributor - an emergency control button for those who need their egos stabbed several times over and shot for good measure. Any piece eligible for Category 6 has to have gone under at least one (1) Cat. 5 review and even then must have undergone significant restructuring and improvement. To give one example of severity of this category, we expect only 3-4 of these a year. Expect college-length theses written on how absolutely terrible your piece is - positive statements are forbidden at this level.

Be reminded that even though the act of not following these rules (except for our plagiarism rule) does not have any particularly
bad consequences, as always, your actions here can deeply affect your Karma.

Thank you,
