Welcome to The United Literates, or TUL! We hope you enjoy your visit!

We're one of the largest all-genre, all-literate forums on the Zathyrus Networks, and we'd love to have you join! Our roleplays range from the fun to the mature, and are all member-run and created, extending from Fictional roleplays set in the past and future, to Real-Life and Fan-Fiction categories. In addition to roleplays, TUL also has a vibrant community of artists and writers, featured in The Cafe section of the website, who also love to do things out of character through our Lounge area.

Right now, you're viewing the forum as a guest, which means you only have limited access to the board and it's features. To join TUL and start roleplaying with us, all you have to do is click the link below, register, and pass through our applications process. So what are you waiting for?

Often, when one is not used to using a forum service like Zetaboards, some of the basics can be a little bit more confusing than others for the new user. So we, the staff of TUL, are providing you with an updated version of our original Handy Tips Guide, to help you become accustomed to some of the more aesthetic parts of TUL. If you require ANY further assistance or explanation, PM any online staff member (they have differently shaded names), and they'll be happy to assist you. Welcome to TUL, and enjoy your stay!

I. BBCode

For those of you used to Neopets or other roleplaying forums, Zetaboards - the service that TUL uses - allows it's users to edit their posts with different fonts and sizes, colors, effects, and even add links or images to posts. This system, called Bulletin Board Code (BBCode for short), is a simple, easy way to edit your posts, signatures, and member titles - so go crazy and have fun! I'll list the most common ones used on TUL, along with their effects.

II. The PM System

Often - especially during a roleplay or to discuss something personal - you might find the public viewing of the forum a bit too...well, public. For this reason, TUL has a Personal Message system that you can use to discuss topics in a private, email-like format. Please note that, as it is a part of our forum and the TUL experience, all rules that apply to forum posts also apply to Personal Messages.

So how do you use the PM System? First, check out the upper right hand corner of any page on TUL. You'll notice a clickable link marked 'Inbox' - this will take you to the PM homepage, your personal inbox for messages. We'll discuss the options in a moment, but for now we'll talk about the messages themselves.

All PMs are exactly like forum posts - you can use BBCode, for one - and are listed on your inbox in 'topics', where the original message and all replies are contained. Messages are sorted by date: that is, the most recent replied message will be first. Clicking the message name will bring you to the full list of replies.

Now for the links. First up is Compose Message, where you can send a PM to any member on the board, and they will receive it as soon as they are online (if not already). First, you have to select a member to send it to - either by choosing from your address book or entering the name manually. Then, you have to enter a message subject. And finally, you can type and send your message. An optional feature of the PM system is the ability to track messages - clicking that box before you hit send will allow you to delete any sent messages as long as they are not read.

The next is the Address Book link, where you can both enter members for easy contact and block members from sending you messages - just enter the name and indicate whether or not they are allowed to send you messages, and voila! No more irritating spam!

Our last important link are the PM Settings, where you can shut down the PM system entirely, making you unable to messages from anyone, cause every message to be tracked by default, or display an alert on the page when you receive a message. Also included in the links are the Message Tracking system, the ability to download PMs to your personal computer, and manage message tags, which allow you to classify PMs in certain categories.

Last but not least, if you find yourself in the middle of a topic and need to PM someone, every member post has a Online/Offline icon in the bottom left corner of their post, below their stats. Clicking this icon will bring you to a filled-out Compose Message screen, where all you have to do is type the message and hit Send. This is also an option on every member's profile, provided they have not turned off their system.

If you are experiencing any difficulties with the PM system, or are being harassed or spammed by another member, please contact an Administrator with a name and copy of the reported PM.

Hurr, we are helpful links.

III. The Rest of It All, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Roleplay

When it comes to TUL, there are a lot of questions you may have, especially besides those listed above. All said - don't worry. You can post in the Comment Box forum, as well as in the Shoutbox, to ask for help and support from the community and those around you - but most importantly, TUL is a collective of writers and roleplayers, a community that will accept you, if you try to work with the rest of the group.

Frustrated that you can't jump into a roleplay? A lot of them actually began through discussion, on our Roleplay Promotions forum, where you can simply list up what you're currently into and want to RP in a topic. People WILL respond, so don't worry - there's a fit here for every possible roleplayer.

If you're having any more trouble or concerns, especially if you find yourself having a problem with another member, PM a staffer and let them know, and they'll be glad to take care of it for you.

Your loyal insane leader,
Locke
