Hold on to your butts, 'cause I'm firing this tiemskip up. *puts on sunglasses* Mara is going to go derping in the woods. I'm going to leave the exact timing of this vague and unstated so we can wiggle it into the overarching timeline later. The most I'll do is pin down a time of day and what the weather is currently like, but LSL is weird and doesn't like to obey the laws of climate physics or whatever. This thread will be in Public Lives, so if your characters want to derp in the woods, go for it. Eventually (like the Monday after ESM), Ronne Werden will be back in the office doing lawyer things. I'm not sure where this thread should go, so the other lawyers should chime in here. Also, if anyone should want to speak with and/or retain a lawyer (or find work at the firm), we should discuss this thing. Will Hayes has no idea what do after A Spot of Catnip Tea, so we're gonna have to wrap that up before I solidify any plans with him. I'm still up for contemplating stuff and things people might want to do with him, though. |

So I've been eyeing this game for a bit now, and I admit I would totally love to join in. I have a couple of character ideas, but must aren't fleshed out just yet, although I'll tweak this post once they finish forming in my head. In the meantime, however, I would like to bring in the one that IS ready, if it's okay. Conrad Wallace is the charming owner of a chain of nightclubs called The Windy Night, which specialise in Chicago Blues and world-class BBQ. The clubs cater equally to both human and sentient non-human life under strict rules of Sanctuary, and most even feature an all-ages area so teens can have a safe place to hang out (and learn what REAL music sounds like). He will, publicly, have come to town to open up his latest location and personally oversee it's operation. Privately, he is still searching for somewhere he can find joy and psychological peace. Conrad is also missing his right arm. And has Dissociative Identity Disorder. And he's a Vampire. The goals in game for this character would be (nominally) to develop local trust, and build his brand, as well as to (to a much greater extent) find a place where he can call home. |

(*looks up at time stamp* ...Second.) We're totally up for discussing any and all ideas that you may have! :D For the current concept, it's worth noting that there are established vampires in the area, but Conrad is unlikely to know them (or even about them) prior to relocation. But if you would like to have pre-existing vampiric contacts in the area, that's totally doable; we'll just have to talk about who and how. The timing might also be kind of weird; it might be a good idea to have a post or thread about scouting out the area before you actually move in and set up the club. That way, you can familiarize yourself with the setting and have him meet established characters that might not otherwise be interested in patronizing the club (or who might even be outright hostile to it). [abbr=yes, they are back. deal with it.]Fun facts[/abbr]: I may have difficulty taking a vampire named Conrad seriously. I'm cool with doing a scouting run. I hadn't planned for him to know anyone there yet, as the whole idea is that he is heading somewhere completely new and different for him. He keeps the structure of his clubs fairly consistent, with just a few alterations unique to each town's demographics. Besides, it will be interesting to encounter the various major players in uncertain territory, especially the more hostile ones. |

Hey guys!! Suddenly there is a Jason!!! Name: Jason Age: 16' Height: 5'11" Weight: 150 Eyes: Steel Grey Hair: Black Build: Just shy of jock boy muscular Personality: Jason would honestly rather be out to a movie, albeit a horrible b-horror movie but a movie all the same. Not a huge fan of people but begrudging aware of his ridiculously handsome jawline Jason is apt to keep conversations short, but cordial. |

So, hey, since stuff is happening, Imma butter up some poast and share it with everyone. Mmm, buttered poast. First things first, there is finally a character profile thread. The thread is intended for active characters, which means "characters you are currently playing and posting for." If you're posting regularly with a character, then it is active. Characters might fade in and out of being active, but I'm sure we'll figure out a way to note that in the profiles before we get there. Or we won't and everyone will flail until something works. As for what should go in the profiles, a basic rundown should be just fine. There is no template or anything to follow (but templates are welcome if people want to make and use them), so it's casual and free-form. For the most part, we're looking for name, age, occupation, and a bit about their appearance and backstory. Species and power set (if any) is optional. I'm personally including a section for "tells"--subtle signs that mark someone as supernatural/non-human--because I like using them. More lengthy profiles should be filed to the SLC Wiki (yes, we have one). If you don't have an account or it won't let you get one, let me know so we can work something out. And now, for other things. Anne-Marie is very much excited about having a nightclub in town. She's up for roleplaying pretty much anything in that regard. She is also quite possibly shacking up at a motel for a while, and could easily be found around town if anyone wants to populate a scene somewhere. My other characters are all currently occupied in threads, though Mara is the only one I feel is available enough to play with immediately. Technically, Hayes and Werden are not occupied during our new Summer Break, Take Two period, but they are in threads that could have significant impact on their weekday plans, so I'm considering them unavailable for threads. They are, however, totally available for plotting future scenes or just bouncing ideas around. |

Maybe pinning the topics for active characters? If there get to be too many, we can always just pin the ones that are active on Public Lives. A couple notes about my upcoming profiles: They may contain deliberate omissions. For example, if a character is older (or younger) than they appear, I'm going to treat their apparent age as their real age. If someone in-universe does the proper detective work to uncover their true date of birth, I will reveal that information in-thread. I will have a section for gender, since gender presentation is readily apparent. However, I do not intend to have sections for sexual orientation or biological sex, since you can't always tell what's in someone's pants or whether you'd ever be welcome there just by looking at them. (Once again, you can find that out in-thread.) |

So I have a few more ideas for characters I'd like to bring in, as well as a request regarding the one I've mentioned previously. In regards to Conrad Wallace, I still don't plan on him knowing anyone in town prior to arrival, however I was hoping folks would be amiable to his company being preexisting corporate clients of Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe. This would serve the dual purposes of facilitating real estate purchase and providing reason for picking this particular town rather than a myriad of others (ready access to legal representation being a highly beneficial asset). As for the additional characters: First: Valia DeMortis Age - 27 Birthday - November 1 Hair - Black Eyes - Red Skin Color - Porcelain White Height - 6'0" Weight - 145 lbs. Gender - Cis-gender Female Orientation - Homosexual (Lesbian) Personality: Always friendly and congenial, Valia is the kind of person folks are drawn toward instinctively. She displays an incredible level of kindness and nurturing to all who cross her path. She does however have a deeply hidden vicious streak Profession: (in this incarnation) The new Health teacher at Salt-Smith High. She possesses a near encyclopedic knowledge of the human body and its components. There are hints at her true nature found within her suspicious level of enthusiasm over the topic however. While she is a Registered Nurse Practitioner and volunteers at the Hospital Clinic in her free time, she took the position as Health Teacher out of a desire to improve a curriculum she believes to be criminally misaligned (particularly in regards to sex, gender, and orientation).
Valia is, in secret, a Human/Undead hybrid of an unspecified nature who is exceptionally skilled in spellcraft with a marked aptitude and strong preference for Necromancy. She is also a master Alchemist, having been trained from the age of 12.
Second: Hastur DeSoto Age - "27" Birthday - February 29 Hair - Black Eyes - Yellow Skin Color - Olive (Mediterranean Caucasian) Height - 5'9" Weight - 125 lbs. Gender - Transgender Female Orientation - Homosexual (Lesbian) Personality: Quiet and congenial, Hastur generally prefers books to people the vast majority of the time, although she is quite the nurturer to those who demonstrate a similar disposition. She likes to think of herself as a shepherd for burgeoning young minds, and goes out of her way to encourage knowledge seekers regardless of what direction their lines of inquiry may be leading them. Profession: Hastur is the new School Librarian at Salt-Smith High. She was delighted to learn there was a suitable position for her to take up at the same school where her fiance Valia had just gained employment. In addition to any resources available in the school's collection, Hastur has a private collection encompassing almost every subject imaginable, with a special emphasis on the occult. She is not above loaning some of these volumes out to particularly promising students, though they must prove their dedication to the pursuit of said knowledge before she makes it available.
Hastur is actually a demonic shapeshifter who was summoned by a teenaged Valia to serve as a familiar/research assistant. The relationship that bloomed forth was a pleasant surprise to both. In addition, Hastur is biologically male, but has never identified as such, and upon the discovery of her shapeshifting powers, adopted her current form as default and gone to extreme lengths to never take a male shape again.
Finally: Jackson DeSoto Age - 16 Birthday - July 10 Hair - Blue Eyes - Yellow Skin Color - Olive (Mediterranean Caucasian) Height - 6'0" Weight - 200 lbs. Gender - Cis-gender Male Orientation - Questioning Personality: Jackson is generally a gregarious person, however, being a teenager, he is prone to bouts of angst, as well as sass and snark. He enjoys sports, particularly soccer and baseball, but deep down has the soul of an artist. When alone, he frequently fills his time by either painting surreal portraits (acrylic being his preferred medium) or reading and reciting his favorite plays. He is not alone often, however, as his friendly, outgoing nature leads him to make friends easily and spend as much time socializing as possible. Background Elements: Jackson is a Hastur DeSoto's nephew. Hastur and Valia became Jackson's legal guardians after his parents were killed in a car accident 7 years ago. He generally refers to them as "Auntie", adding their name if distinction is necessary. The three of them share a tight-knit bond, though he does get embarrassed if they dote on him too much in public settings.
Jackson is a half-demon on his mother's side. He knows he and his family are not normal humans and is no stranger to magic, however he is still unaware of the full nature of his bloodline. He has a access to some of his demonic powers, however he is unaware of their source or their full extent. He is also a neophyte alchemist, receiving training in such matters from Valia twice per week. The true nature of his parent's death is also unknown to him. In truth they were killed by Hunters and then subjected to the automotive collision and subsequent fire posthumously in order to hide the truth of the event from prying eyes (primarily because the Hunters were unaware that his father was a mundane human and needed to cover their mistake).
Let me know what you think. If these are acceptable, I'll relocate the descriptions to the Character Profile section and start up some introductory posts. |

I'm perfectly okay with Conrad having an account at DC&H before he moves. We have three nametagged lawyers to choose from, though I can really only speak for Ronne since I'm playing him. You'll need to ask Constance about Sophie and Emily about Renee. Of the three, Renee and Ronne are the ones that are staying at DC&H, and Sophie is going to go work for the prosecutor's office (if I remember everything correctly). As for the new characters, they look fine to me. Besides, we need more active women-folk in this game. Little Salt Lake's turning into a real sausagefest, yo. |

Character discussion time! I like what I'm seeing (as Brie said, the game's a sausagefest right now; nine active male characters, no active female characters), but there are still a couple things you should know or should consider before finalizing the choices. Conrad and DC&H: As Brie mentioned, Sophie would probably be a poor choice for a legal representative, as she's already handed in her two weeks notice and is in the process of transferring her accounts to other lawyers within the firm. She's still available for a scene, but it would probably be a one-time consultation to identify what Conrad requires in a legal representative and pair him with the most-appropriate choice. Valia's profession, part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpCvnBrjAhQ I must admit that you've got some competition for the health teacher position, competition from me. I have two characters who have previously expressed interest in the job: Edgar Carlton (from Caught in the Rain) and Michael Strix (no active thread yet, but he may appear in Into the Woods). In terms of their approach to the curriculum, they'd both represent significant reform (as I've kind of been assuming that the school has my school's "senile old man tells you that condoms don't prevent STDs and then eats mealworms and crickets in front of the class" approach to sex ed), since they are varying degrees of subversive. Not that the school would know that, since until certain details go public, the only mark on Carlton's record is a messy divorce in the '90s (maybe. the family history still needs to be reviewed and finalized, since it was kind of a bullshitted excuse for twins to have different accents from one another), and there is absolutely nothing suspicious about Strix's. Nothing at all... In terms of teaching personae, the two are almost polar opposites. Carlton is an energetic, animated teacher with a tendency to ramble on about things that, while often interesting and arguably relevant, aren't directly related to the coursework. Strix, however, is focused and and emotionally inexpressive (verging on blunted affect), but he maintains enough variation in tone to give lectures a pleasing, non-monotonous sound and makes frequent (subtle) jokes. This being SLC, both are (over-)qualified for the job and would be able to fill the previously unfilled 'handsome male teacher' role. I'd be fine with Valia taking the job instead, but I'd like to get one or both of these characters jobs (preferably one at the school and the other outside the school). Valia's profession, part 2: For clarification, do you mean "Nurse Practitioner" or "Registered Nurse"? They're two different jobs, so I'd like to make sure I'm not mistaking which one you mean. When most people think of a nurse, they think of either an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or an RN (Registered Nurse). The two do similar jobs, but the RN has more education than and outranks the LPN. A Nurse Practioner is completely different; an NP's job is actually more similar to that of a doctor, though they still work with a "collaborating physician" who reviews their work. No matter which type of nurse she is, she's going to be busy. The area has been hit with a recent Hastur: Aw yiss, new librarian! Up until now, the library's kind of been a place where people sneak off to nap or talk about being werewolves. There was a library spirit (not Gregory) that was there for a while, but as its arc was unceremoniously dropped before his player left, the only character it ever interacted with seemed to forget his existence after that, and it could easily be waved away with the "all just a dream" excuse, I'd say you're free to retcon it out or re-characterize it for your purposes. I'll provide the complete, unedited interaction below, so you can make an informed decision there (but if you decide that you don't want to read it, I will completely understand). So, yes, as far as I'm concerned, the library is yours now. Do with it what you will.
Deep within the shelves of books something stirs. IT is not animal or human, but rather it is a presence. An old, no, an ancient presence. It moves slowly, carefully, through the tomes of knowledge it guards and cares for. It comes across a sleeping figure, a young boy, and it takes interest. It leans over the sleeping figure, and rasps “Why have you fallen asleep on knowledge, young one?” Drake's eyes opened slowly, and blinked away sleep. There is not anyone in the library besides Drake. However the voice persists "Read or leave little one. I tolerate no laziness in my library." Drake glared, gray eyes darkening. "Who the fuck are you?" He growled. The presence in the library seems to give off an aura of satisfaction. "Ahh, questioning mind eh? Excellent, excellent. Well, to answer your question, little one, i am the Librarian. I take care of the library." "Screw you." Drake responded to the disembodied voice. The Librarian seems disappointed Drakes rudeness. "So sad to see your quest for knowledge stopped so quickly. And by your own bravado no less. Tragic." The air seems heavy with contemplation. "Perhaps... a bit of... involuntary instruction would suit the young one best... yes, this is best." Drakes arms and legs seem rooted to the ground, his head is turned toward the ceiling, and his eyes refuse to shut. "Now then," Says the Librarian "Let us begin." The Librarian seemed to move away from Drake's captive form, and had begun muttering to itself. "This is a violent young one, better to appeal to that sensibility. Some bloody battle perhaps? Custer's last stand, Agin court, no no. Ah, hear we go. Roarke's drift." A small book floated off the shelves in the history section. It carrened in the air towards Drake stopping just short of his eyes. The book retreats from drakes head slightly. "Now young one," droned the librarian "Learn." The book rushed toward Drakes head and the world turns black. Drake starts awake in the library, any thoughts of sleep far from his mind. The only thing he is thinking is that he needs to leave the library. Now. "Fuck." Drake growled. Sweat shown on his pale face. The headache from the hangover was back, only now caused by something other than alcohol. Pain spiked though his head each time blood pulsed through his brain. What had just happened to him? That disembodied voice, the books? He stood shakily and glared at the book. He didn't want to have to deal with this. Not at school. Drake walked out of the library and sat on a bench. He hid his face, he didn't want people recognize him like this.
|

Well, for Conrad and DC&H, I'll drift him over to their offices once he's wandered around town a bit. Once he get's there, we'll see who's available. For Valia: thanks for pointing out my mix-up, I meant she is a Nurse Practitioner. As far as the Health Teacher position goes, I rather enjoy the idea of Edgar Carlton getting the job. I think that of the three up for the position he would be the most entertaining from what limited knowledge I have. I can use my back-up plan for Valia and have her open up an Herbal Apothecary shop (probably partitioned from her home), which she would run when not on duty at the hospital. It could also provide part-time work for Jackson. I also really like the idea of the Library Ghost, and with a little minor re-characterization it could be a lot of fun to have around for Hastur and any students or faculty who wander into the library to play off of. If folks are okay with me picking it up and tweaking it a little, I think it could be pretty interesting. |

Hastur: Just to let you know, the library may or may not smell of spiced rum and strong cigars. And by "may" I mean "it totally does," at least long enough for people to notice it. The length of time the smell remains is entirely based on lolz: if it is funny for the rum-and-smoke stink to be there, it's there. (Long story short: Baron Samedi showed up in the library. Short story long: Read through "Dem Bones.") Valia: If Valia winds up with any connection to the local hospital, I'd like to get a meet-up arranged between her and Dr Hayes (he works in the ER and was working during the "gas explosion"). He is still likely to visit her since he makes use of herbs for more than just tea. Conrad: Regarding his latest post, I am going to officially set Anne-Marie up in the motel for the time being. Since Conrad seems to be a night owl, shuffling ahead to the post-sunset hours looks like the way to go. Would you like to go ahead and modify that in to your post? Do you mind if I reply there? Jer has a character there too; wanna try and poke him to see if his angsty werewolf wants to play outside the motel, too? |

I've tweaked the post to fast forward to post-sunset, and sure, posting there works. If Jer wants to join in too, the more the merrier...or angstier...or whatever the case may be :) As for Valia, once she gets set up, I'll send her over to the hospital to join in on the relief effort. The meet-up with Dr. Hayes can get worked in then. Ooooohhh! Rum! |

So, I really like all the occupation options you've suggested for Valia. This is a pretty great problem to have. It may, in fact, be the opposite of a problem. I may try to get Strix in a thread to show off his, uh, eccentricities before we make a final decision on occupations, but Into the Woods just isn't drawing his attention yet. If you're the type to find Carlton entertaining (not everyone does), then he'd probably be entertaining in just about any teaching role. If we didn't already have a Biology teacher, I'd probably assign him there. (And sadly, phobias probably prevent him from taking over Chemistry.) One possibility for getting your new characters involved more quickly would be if the library opens before classes resume. That could also provide a potential meeting spot for teenage characters who are having trouble finding places to socialize with others (without resorting to wandering around in dangerous areas like the woods). |

Well, it appears that In The Woods has stalled. I'd like to send Mara somewhere else since he has a terrible time of getting to be on-screen. I'll still effectively keep him in the woods (time is fuzzy, it'll work; trust me). His apparent inability to get in a handful or so of posts per thread wasn't a problem... until I decided he needed character development. In the form of a near-death experience. Anyone interested in helping one shamanistic janitor-type get integrated into the setting before he has a brush with certain doom? (And, hey, if anyone has ideas on what that near-death might be, I'm all ears.) To help get this process going along, I'd like to start this off in a Public Lives thread. One thing I do have Mara planning to do is visit the library. He has janitor duties even during the break, so he's going to wind up in the school eventually, and he might as well get some screen-time out of it. I figure this will also give new characters a convenient spot to make an entrance if they want to. Mara is flexible (and so am I), so any thoughts, suggestions, or comments are totally welcome. |
