"As you know," Rob began, standing at the front of the passenger end of the transport. "Going to the city is dangerous. If it weren't, we'd be going a hell of a lot more often and we'd be wasting a lot less of our time at the firing range. And yeh, some people have died. But they died, because they didn't follow the rules. You follow the rules, you'll be fine.

"Firstly, do what the officers tell you to do. They've been here before. They know what they're doing. If they say you need to take off your shirt and wear it as pants while balancing a spoon on your nose, you don't ask why, you ask politely for a goddamn spoon.

"Secondly, don't wander off. Stay with the group. That should go without saying.

"Thirdly, stay quiet. No shooting off your mouth or your gun. No matter how empty an area looks, you yell across a room, that sound will carry and the area will not be empty for long.

"Forth, don't complain. It sucks ass sleeping in the transport. The food tastes so bad, it gives you wet dreams of the food from the Mess Hall. Trust me; Everybody knows, everybody feels the same, and it's just really annoying to listen to.

"So we good? We're good. It'll take most of the day to get there. We're going to a building that used to be a hospital, we passed it when returning at an alternate route through the city last time we were there. Looking out for equipment, medicine, bedding, mattresses, that sort of thing. Anything salvageable. We'll arrive just before nightfall, scavenge all night into the morning and be back on the road, heading home before noon tomorrow." He gave a light smile, "Back in Delta by tomorrow evening. So count yourself lucky, since we normally don't have a specific location to deal with, and city trips can sometimes last weeks at a time.

"If you have questions, you can ask me, or Lieutenant Weaver, just there." He pointed out Weaver, sitting near the front, and then took his own seat, near the back. It was protocol - an officer at each of the entrance/exit points.

Alex, who was in the driver seat, started up the transport with a whine and a shudder, and they were off, clearing the gate and speeding toward the city.

---

At the mention of his name, Weaver gave Rob a nod and looked back at everyone, so they could see his face. He avoided eye contact with the pretty native girl, wondering briefly if she was currently attached. He turned back into his seat, annoyed with himself for letting her become a distraction.

He resolved to ask Rob if he could do the speech next time- he knew Rob hated doing it, and he could use the experience. One day, I'll get out of here, and I'll run Alpha. The thought made him smile.

---

Westlake paused on his way toward the Mess Hall, watching the transport exit the gates. He bumped Felix's arm, and pointed. "And they're off," he muttered, adding a quieter, "Stay safe."

Abby smiled at the girl and shook her head as the boy she knew as Manny winked at her.

She sat quietly in the corner while Major Rob spoke. Most of what he asked wouldn't be a problem for her, she didn't eat much, take up much room, she always did as she was told and she wouldn't make a sound. But the wondering off part, that could be an issue.
She was so small and quiet that it was easy to forget she was there and leave her behind, and there where so many places she could get that others couldn't, which meant it was easy to get separated.

"What if we get separated?" she asked quietly

Emmanuel tried his hardest to pay attention to the rules, particularly when Major Oliver mentioned that people had died by disobeying them, but he only managed to catch about half of them. There was just something about the way he talked when he addressed them. It reminded him of when the major had welcomed the newbies yesterday. This strict and stern facet was incredibly hot and unfortunately distracting. When Major Oliver smiled, his eyes were drawn immediately to the cut, and he absently touched his own. His attention refocused when the other officer, Lieutenant Weaver, was pointed out. He checked out the guy, mentally approving him on his to-do list, but too spaced out for any flirtations.

The transport lurched into motion, and it was all he could do not to panic and scream to be let off, he changed his mind, oh wait he never asked to go to the goddamn city in the first place.

Gene blurted out an automatic "Oh hi!" as Emmanuel sat down next to him. He grinned awkwardly at him; or more accurately, past him; for a while, feeling bad about giving such a dismissive greeting. There's no point in it, though, so he sank his face back into the seat in front of him with a thud.

He barely paid attention to the major's speech; there's a similar debriefing before every, mostly about following orders and whatnot. But his words are floating in the air and there's no point in ignoring them. "It's kinda true actually," Gene mumbled into the seat after he finished, half hoping that Emmanuel would take interest. "They do know what they're doing. Things will play out just as planned if we follow our roles. Everything is predictable in the end. If you predict hard enough. No, if you think logically. If everything fits together from all different angles."

Alexy walked back towards the compound and Looked around, It was then that it dawned on him, Without patrol, he had nothing to do...
We could always go on patrol anyways...
Psssh, And ruin our day off?
Well what have we got to do otherwise?
Eat? Sleep? Masturbate? Iunno.
*sigh*
He shook his head at the last thought.

Alexy eventually decided on walking back to the male barracks and grabbing a towel before heading over to the showers to give himself a Well deserved cleaning, Mentlaly and Phisically.

Emmanuel was unsure if Gene was being mopey or if he was tired, but he patted his back anyway. He leaned forward and pressed his cheek against the seat in front of them as well to come face to face with him.

"That's pretty meta of you," he commented. "And optimistic. It doesn't look like a lot fits together so neatly." Like the different parts of Rob, or me being in the army. He gave Gene a once over and decided that at the very least, they might fit. He smiled.

Rob was a tad nervous. He shifted in his seat, thoughts floating toward Manny. He liked the guy, really liked him. And having him along on this mission... he hoped he didn't get distracted. Because Manny was very, very distracting. And fuck, his mind was less than eloquent right then. His mind lingered on their kiss in the office, and Manny seemed to be at a little less upset about having to go.

But that wasn't his point. His nervousness didn't stem from being in the city, he'd been there before, hundreds of times. It was for when they got back. It wasn't like he'd never, he had, several times, in several different places and positions. But he was nervous about the morning after. Because Manny seemed a tad on the promiscuous side, and very sex-minded, and Rob frowned, dropping his head against the window to watch the scenary roll pass.

Will he still like me afterwards? Or will it be, a cocky smile and a kiss goodbye?

He supposed it was for the best. Give him what he wants, and then see what happens. If he's going to break your heart, better sooner than later. Before I get too attached, and do something stupid like fall in love with him.

"Ah, it does if you look at it on another level," Gene turned to Emmanuel with a grin, almost excited. "Everything is interconnected. That's how they can interact with one another. How they're part of the same reality. I think."

Alexy had his top off by the time he got to the showers rolling his shoulders and his neck stripping down and standing under a showerhead turnimg both taps simultainiously, shuddering and sighing under the warm water of the showers, he stood there with the water running over his face lettimg it run down his body, feeling it get caught in his deepest scars and being reminded of how he got each one.

Neena listened to the man as closly as she could, nodding her head here and there at things he was saying. Of course she really wouldn't fall into not following directions, but she wasn't going to if she was asked to do something as stupid as the example the major gave. That would just be idiot to even to what they would say if it wasn't a part of what they needed to do. She would most rather punch someone in the face than do something stupid.

As soon as the Lieutenant was mentioned, she turned her head to look at him once more. She gave a slight sigh, and as soon as the major was done talking she turned her attention to the window. How.. boring it seemed out there, nothing but sand and presumably dead plant life. It was droll, so very hard to even look at, but that was how it was out here.. and she hated it.

----------------------------------------

Felix felt the light bump on his arm and looked over where Westlake had, only to see the transport vehicle take off beyond the gate. "Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be fine," he said with a soft smile, giving him a light pat upon the back, "lets.. go get breakfast." Oh how he dreaded saying that.

"Right, yes," Wes nodded. He cast another look toward the transport, half-lost in a cloud of kicked up sand, and he grinned just slightly as an odd thought came to mind.

They entered the Mess Hall. It was busy, it always was in the mornings, and Westlake took up two trays- one for food, one for defense. The food itself seemed like some sort of hash, and slices of what may have been ham sometime in the past. It wasn't as gross as the usual, since the kitchen staff tended to be kinder on days where people left for the city. It could be there last meal.

"So I was thinking," West muttered, taking a smaller table near the back and out of firing range of the more vicious offenders. "There's an awful lot of sand around here. We should build a sand castle. Maybe talk to Rob about doing like, a sand castle building competition or something?"

Felix looked around in the packed mess hall, the smell of the food almost making him want to vomit. Then again, he really didn't want to give the cooks the satisfaction of such an even.. horrible chefs they were. He followed Westlake, though only grabbing one tray as he didn't need a shield. He got what they were serving, only to cringed at the mere sight of it. How did anyone eat this slop? Perhaps it would kill him after the first bite, that was unlikely. "Nasty shit," he frowned, only to get a nice glare from one of the cooks. He gave them a forced smile before running off towards Westlake.

The tray of food was sat down first, then his own ass onto the seat. "Thinking?" he looked over to him, only to smiled a bit at his idea, "you know, even though that might take a lot of water, it sounds like a pretty fun idea."

Abby waited for the Major to reply, but noticed a spaced out look in his eye.
"Major?" She said a little louder. "What if we get separated?" She questioned, returning to her quiet voice, worried that everyone would look at her for speaking.
Abigail took a quick glance out the window, noticing a rusted shell of what used to be a car. The type of thing no one else could see a use for, but she could.

"Yeh, I guess. It didn't occur to me that it'd use water, but it would, wouldn't it? It doesn't have to be clean water, or anything, it's not people would be drinking it. Or we could use the juice from the Mess Hall, people shouldn't be drinking that anyways."

West spotted Carver, closer than he'd like. They made eye contact, just briefly, and Wes sunk down in his chair, trying to focus all of his attention on Felix. Carver usually left him alone if he was with someone else.

"Thank you, for coming with me," he said, giving a little smile as he nipped at a slice of ham, which surprisingly managed to have a hamlike flavour. "I know Rob would never let us go to the city, but I bet he'd let us go to town. I'll buy a store of food, we can keep in the infirmary. And then neither of us will have to go to the Mess Hall ever again."

---

Rob looked over to Abby. He hadn't heard her the first time. He gave her a small smile, "You won't get separated. Generally, we keep all the recruits together, with at least one officer. So you are never going to be alone. On the very small off-chance that you do get separated, go back to the last place the group was. We'll notice very quickly if someone is missing, and we'll come back for you."
